But what this gay pirate show called "Our Flag Means Death" does just as well with its exploration of queerness, is use Taika Waititi’s Blackbeard -- through his relationship with the main character Stede Bonnet -- to tell an allegorical story about how close-knit toxic masculinity is to internalized homophobia leading up to the kiss scene, and how one’s journey of emancipation can be more difficult than it seems.
