During the 14th-18th centuries, symbols of mortality or “memento mori” often adorned the headstones of final resting places as a reminder that death is a part of life. Mortality rates were higher during this time, so the death denial we see in society today was not as prominent, and people would prepare and live their lives fully and admirably so they could have “a good death.” Symbols such as skulls were eventually used less over time, and we began seeing gentler imagery such as a weeping willow representing mourning and grief, which was another thing people during this time worked into their daily lives wearing mourning jewelry and clothing. Mourning jewelry was often made of the deceased’s hair and woven into beautiful imagery such as flowers. These are practices we don’t see much of today. We deny our inevitable, natural end and are conditioned to have our grief almost be a shameful secret we don’t bring into our daily lives. The lighthouse at Eagle Bluff was a challenge to me. My first trip yielded lackluster shots, and the second trip looked to do the same with far too many clouds to see the sunset.
