Spirit of Haida Gwaii, Bill Reid, Courtyard, Canadian Embassy, Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC, 2023.
The late Bill Reid (1920–1998) was a British Columbia artist, and his sculptures are some of the finest works of the 20th century. This cast bronze is easily accessible on Pennsylvania Avenue across from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC and should be on the itinerary of every visitor to that part of the Capital. It is unfortunate that Reid is not given prominence in major art museums outside Canada, museums where 20th century sculpture is usually represented by a collection of welded steel bric-a-brac or seemingly randomly piled assortments of detritus.

Menu Monday: On February 22, 1871, Lewis Dewart from Princeton's Class of 1872 attended the Carnival Banquet in Washington, part of a three-day celebration of the paving of Pennsylvania Avenue. The banquet was the final event, hosting press and other prominent visitors among the throngs of at least 10,000 people who had flocked to the city.

Early in their two-month occupation of Washington, D.C., the Bonus Army marches on Pennsylvania Avenue on their way to the U.S. Capitol June 6, 1932 to demand early payment of a promised World War I bonus.
The sign reads “millions for ….., not one cent for hungry veterans.”
They had earlier circled government buildings in the city before making their way to the Capitol where they picketed for 30 minutes before returning to their camps.

...in certi miei momenti forse oziosi
mi chiedo dove sei e che cosa fai
e come passi i tuoi giorni noiosi,
io che non ti risposi
in questa casa mia che sai e non sai...

Navy Memorial Fountain, National Archives Building Beyond, Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC, 2006.
If Trump is finally prosecuted, and one hopes convicted, of Federal Crimes, the staff of the National Archives will be owed a share of the thanks. Adhering to their duty of maintaining the public record, employees of the Archives have been diligent in tracing the lost and destroyed documents which, by law, should have been maintained and kept under appropriate levels of security, almost without exception on federal government property. The very act of removing documents from federal control is itself a serious crime, a felony.
