French born Gardel, who spent his childhood in the BA barrio of Balvanera and got his start as a singer there, was the most famous tango singer of his era and many think the best of all time. He was wildly popular in the US, and in addition to sold-out concerts on his his tours he starred in several Hollywood movies. He died in a plane crash returning from engagements in the US. He is one of the two most influential people associated with tango who had strong US ties. Astor Piazzolla, the most famous composer and tanguista was born in Argentina but spent much of his childhood and young adulthood in New York. Indeed he was contacted by Gardel in New York to play the bandoneon on the fateful tour, but Piazzolla's father said he was too young.

For me 1984 was a bit of a wonder year, including spending much of the summer in Europe, mainly France. We rented a borie near the town of Saint-Jean-du-Gard in the Cevennes, about 60 km from Nîmes, and took advantage of the summer to attend various cultural events nearby including the opera staged in the Roman era arena. "Aïda" was perfect for the staging, complete to the use of camels and other animals. The opera had been written to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal, and it was intended for outdoor performance.

Sold as "local crafts" and perhaps made nearby, these textiles are in generic designs, many of them available from New Mexico south to Chile and Argentina. Some rather fancier shops in Cusco sell locally designed and woven fabrics much more expensive than those sold at sidewalk stands and near tourist attractions.

A patron of lost causes amongst other things, San Expédito is widely venerated in Argentina. This shrine in the pueblo of Bermejo in the desert of San Juan province is a popular pilgrimage destination.
