Delicious eats from Kanpai Yakiniku @kanpaiyakinikuperth in Victoria Park. Ordered the following: - Uni Wagyu Aburi Ngiri $30 - Ishiyaki Stone Rice $25 - Wagyu Harami Skirt $34 - Pork Jowl $19 - Gyu Tan Finger cut $26 - Wagyu rib finger $34 - M9 Karubi Plate $34 - Tebasaki Wings $16 - Shishamo Fish $16 - Japanese imported rice $5 - Karuizawa beer (350ml) x 2 $15 each - Suntory Premium Malts (350ml) $12 Favourites were the bbq meats, uni wagyu aburi ngiri, stone rice and tebasaki wings. Shishamo fish is a deep-fried snack with fish roe that goes well with beer but too fishy for my liking as I’m not used to it. Let me know if you’ve tried it and like it. 😆 #KanpaiYakiniku #Japanese #JapanesebbQ #PerthJapanese #VicPark #Uni #Wagyu #Japanesefood #PerthFood #PFR_Japanese #PFR_KanpaiYakiniku (at Kanpai Yakiniku) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co06A2jvIFj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

HINATA CAFE // Last Sunday’s brunch from @hinatacafe - first time visiting this place and glad to have finally tried it. Menu on @perthfoodmenu or click #PFR_HinataCafe We had the following: - Hinata Brunch Set: Changed monthly, this one-plate set is a 'homestyle everyday meal' that includes veggie miso soup, brown rice, 2 protein dishes and 3 veggies. $28 - Onigiri Set: Onigiri (rice ball) with an assortment of side dishes, pickles and a summer-only tofu & veg cold miso soup $17 - Iced Dirty Matcha Latte $8.50 - Strawberry Mochi $4.50 Cute and quirky cafe located at the @fibonacci_au with street parking available. The cold miso soup with rice noodles was refreshing for a hot day. Pork gyozas were delicious and loved the strawberry Mochi with fresh strawberries and mung bean filling inside. The iced dirty matcha latte which was 1/2 matcha and 1/2 coffee was yummy too. #HinataCafe #Fremantle #Japanese #Breakfast #PerthJapanese #Mochi #JapaneseFood #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Japanese #PFR_HinataCafe (at HINATA CAFE) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp9L48yvb7F/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Dinner at one of my favourites Kou Sushi @kousushi_au in Rivervale. So delicious as always! ❤️😋 Finally tried the unagi Don (aud29) and tempura prawns (aud17) here on the third visit. Love the soft eel and fluffy eggs on the bed of rice. Tempura prawns and miso eggplant were deliciously crispy. One of my favourite new restaurants in 2022. 👌🏻💯 - Miso Eggplant $12 - Tempura prawn $17 - Aburi mix $24.00 - Unagi Don $29 - Grilled Wagyu roll $22 #KouSushi #Rivervale #Japanese #PerthJapanese #Perth #PFR_Japanese #PFR_KouSushi (at Kou sushi) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClVyP6LPRED/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

KOU SUSHI 🇯🇵 // Delicious dishes ordered across two visits (last pic was another table’s advanced order of assorted sashimi) from Kou Sushi, @kousushi_au Rivervale. “Kou” is a Japanese word for “long experience” - and the Korean chef / owner here has worked in a Japanese restaurant for many years before opening this place of her own. Menu on @perthfoodmenu or click #PFR_KouSushi Somewhere I’ve been meaning to try for ages and so glad to finally do so for the first time two weeks ago with @inexology and @perthtobkk - returned back in less than two weeks later! Ordered the following (across two visits): - Aburi Don: Grilled fish (salmon, tuna, prawn, scallop), avocado, lemon, omelet, fish roe, spring onion, onion, snow pea, seaweed $24 - KOU SIGNATURE FUTOMAKI: Tempura prawn, cabbage, omelet, salmon, avocado, cucumber $20 - CHICKEN KATSU DON: Rice with chicken katsu, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, bean, sauce $15 - GRILLED WAGYU ROLL: Crab salad roll and topped with grilled wagyu, fish roe, onion $22 - PRAWN CREAM CURRY DON: Fried Prawn, rice, curry sauce, cream, fried onion, lotus root, spring onion $17 - ABURI MIX: Grilled salmon 4pcs, grilled prawn 2pcs, grilled scallop 2pcs $24 - PLAIN UDON: Udon soup with noodle, spring onion, fried tofu, shitake mushroom $13 - MISO EGGPLANT: Fried eggplant, sweet miso, spring onion $10 - Miso soup $2.50 each The food here was fresh and delicious - especially love the wagyu roll, scallop nigiri, miso eggplant and prawn cream curry Don. Chicken katsu was very crispy but the colour of the batter was a bit too dark for my liking. The pastes and sauces are made in-house and proudly written on their board - love that this is relayed to the customers as it is indeed something to be proud of. Bookings recommended to avoid disappointment. Thanks for the complimentary miso soups on our second visit due to the wait. 🙏❤️ #KouSushi #Rivervale #Japanese #PerthJapanese #JapaneseFood #Sashimi #Aburi #Sushi #Katsu #PerthFood #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Japanese (at Kou sushi) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChPMz1YP5nD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

GIFTED // Our feast at newly-opened Izakaya Sumi @izakayasumiperth in Claremont - Perth’s newest Izakaya bar! Please note the entrance is through an alleyway on Bayview Terrace and not on Stirling Highway. Favourites of the night were the eel fried rice ($17; had crusty bits - dish of the night), tender wagyu beef kushi ($15), chicken gizzard kushi ($9) and beef sukiyaki (small) ($19). Love the beautiful interiors & fitout and selection of drinks here - especially love the Takara yuzu chu-hi ($9) and Sapporo Yebisu ($9). Would be back to try the tempura! Made the booking here to check out this new restaurant with @thisisangelang and were happy to pay and support a new local business - thanks so much Jac & Fabe for taking care of the bill though. 🙏❤️ #Gifted #BrandedContent #IzakayaSumi #Claremont #Japanese #PerthJapanese #Izakaya #PerthIzakaya #EelFriedRice #PFR_Japanese #PerthFoodReview #PFR_IzakayaSumi (at Izakaya Sumi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdBTqivvZ3V/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

LIMITED TIME LUNCH @ KANPAI YAKINIKU: Fridays to Sundays only @kanpaiyakinikuperth // Tonkatsu aud26 and GYUTAN (Wagyu tongue) stew from Kanpai Yakiniku, Victoria Park. Menu on last pic. The Berkshire pork loin’s batter was crispy and flaky on the outside and the meat was juicy inside. Wagyu ox tongue was in chunky pieces - the glaze was nice and some pieces were more tender than some. Overall I preferred the tonkatsu dish. Thanks to @gwenwhoo @whooeats for being my last-minute lunch date and your sweet gifts. 🥰😘 #KanpaiYakiniku #VictoriaPark #Tonkatsu #OxTongue #Gyutan #Perth #PerthEats #PerthFood #PerthJapanese #PerthTonkatsu #PerthFoodReview #PFR_KanpaiYakiniku (at Kanpai Yakiniku) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb4zdsgvRnI/?utm_medium=tumblr

MARUMO // the rest of our aud80pp seven courses Omakase menu and a photo of Chef Moe Oo in the kitchen. - Starter: Marinated octopus - Akoya oyster, egg & roe (earlier post) - Paradise Prawn & Edamame Rice - Ocean Trout & Matsutake Mushroom - Chef’s Selection of Sashimi / Pork Gyoza (cooked option) - Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi (earlier post) - Palate Cleanser: Yuzu Sorbet - Dorper Lamb Tenderloin - Plum & Miso Caramel The highlights were the akoya oyster and lamb tenderloin. The sous-vide lamb was very tender and had no gamey smell at all. Delicious paired with the sweet carrot purée and broccoli stalk purée (containing Togarashi flakes which gave it a bit of spicy kick). The prawn heads were deep-fried to a golden crisp which could be eaten and not wasted. Pork gyoza was very crispy and was my substitute for the sashimi. Ocean trout was our least liked dish as the trout was mashed with something and the broth was very starchy. Dessert was salted plum (Umeboshi) mousse with miso caramel and plum purée - this dessert was texturally interesting and a light finish to our meal. Overall it was a good meal but not mind-glowingly impressive. Very lucky to get a chance to visit again - massive thanks to @lalithaanantha , @thisisangelang and @gwenwhoo . ❤️ Outstanding service by the team here (our teas were always filled up without having to ask) and thank you to Chef Moe Oo for obliging us with photos. #Marumo #MarumoNedlands #Japanese #PerthJapanese #FineDining #PerthFineDining #Lamb #sousVide #PorkGyoza #ParadisePrawn #MisoCaramel #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Marumo (at Marumo) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cae3-dbvvV7/?utm_medium=tumblr

MARUMO // Winning the restaurant booking lotto on Thursday night thanks to @lalithaanantha @thisisangelang and @gwenwhoo ❤️ The last time I visited was seven years ago in 2015 - haven’t been able to get a restaurant booking since. If you’ve tried booking, you’d know it’s pretty much impossible as the restaurant website crashes at the release time and all seats are snapped up within a few minutes. Seating only 24 people and only opening on Tuesdays to Fridays, the seven course menu is now $80pp inclusive of complimentary green tea. The restaurant is BYO and $2.50pp for corkage. Glad to have a chance to re-visit again after seven years. Loving our food community in Perth where I’ve met so many incredible people through our shared love of food. You know who you are and I appreciate you guys so much. ❤️ Photo by Gwen @gwenwhoo ; dress from @hm P.S congratulations to our WA lotto winners: 250 Kalgoorlie locals won the $63 million Powerball and each took home $260k - such a heartwarming story to see the huge prize pool being shared around. #Marumo #MarumoPerth #Nedlands #Japanese #PerthJapanese #FineDining #PerthFineDining #PowerballLotto #PFR_Marumo (at Marumo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CabU5CbP3X-/?utm_medium=tumblr

INVITED // Japanese-inspired fusion brunch goals from Miso Hangry, South Perth @misohangryperth which has just launched their breakfast menu. Located within Mends Street Arcade (the Good Grocer South Perth foreshore complex); opposite from Priceline. Breakfast menu on last pic; full menu on @perthfoodmenu or click #PFR_MisoHangry We got to try the following: - Beef Yakiniku Benedict $22.90: 15 hours slow-cooked pulled beef brisket in Yakiniku sauce, caramelised onions, 2 free range eggs on sourdough toast, Hollandaise sauce and crispy lotus roots - Chicken Karaage French Toast $21.90: Japanese fried chicken served on top of golden French toast, miso maple, fried free range egg and jalapeño - Green Tea Smoked Salmon $22.90: served on toast with avocado tomato salsa, poached free range egg and micro shiso - Matcha Latte $5.50 - Mango Smoothie $6.50 - Chai Latte $5.50 Favourites were the flavoursome & tasty Beef Yakiniku Benedict and crispy Chicken Kara-age paired with fluffy French toast. Love the perfectly poached eggs! The smoked salmon is done in-house and was fresh - was yummy as a smoked salmon and avocado tomato salsa toast dish - green tea on smoked salmon was very subtle or maybe coz we’ve had the strong matcha latte which overpowers it. Dinner at Izakaya Jigoro, Perth CBD - the izakaya restaurant that’s Hifumiya by day. Menu on last few pics (visited Jan’ 21). Tried the following: - Buta Kakuni $15 (Japanese braised pork belly) - pics 1 & 2 - Kabayaki sardine conzume on fire $10 - pic 5 - Burikama (braised yellowtail) $18 - pic 4 - Takowasa Chazuke (dashi chazuke with wasabi octopus) $9 - pic 3 - Eihire Aburi (seared stingray fin with Mayo) $7 - pic 6 - Kyoho Sour (Shochu & Kyoho Sour) $11 - pic 7 Favourites were the braised pork belly and braised yellowtail. Very generous portion for the yellowtail (this took 30 minutes to arrive). The octopus was raw (I did tried a bit) and very sweet. Wasn’t expecting the seared stingray to be more like dried stingray - it was very hard and chewy and reminded me of the dried cuttlefish snack. Sardine was straight up canned sardine on fire. Tip: call ahead to make a booking to avoid disappointment. #Jigoro #Izakaya #IzakayaJigoro #PerthCBD #Japanese #PerthJapanese #ButaKakuni #PerthFoodReview #PFR_Jigoro (at Jigoro) https://www.instagram.com/p/CT16z4BBPCE/?utm_medium=tumblr
