The drider flipped another tab open on his phone. Toys for your human. After he’d taken you to the pet shop, he’d realized he hadn’t really prepared to adopt you. He’d found you sleeping in the forest separated from your tribe and you were just so cute, he’d picked you up and taken you home without a thought. 

You were hanging in a cocoon of silk, napping as he rocked you with his foot. 

At the pet shop they’d had clothes, leashes, packets of human treats, and a whole lot of other supplies. He had no idea what he really needed, so he’d scrambled home to research before he bought anything. 

What do humans eat? He typed into the browser. He’d seen a bunch of bags of human food at the store, but it all looked dry and brown. He was sure that couldn't be good for you. A bunch of links popped up. Mostly advertisements for human kibble. He had to adjust his search to What do humans eat in the wild? 

That turned up more promising results. Fruit, cooked meat, nuts, cooked tubers…it turned out you had a pretty varied diet. His food mostly consisted of raw meat he bought at the market. Most driders didn’t cook their food so he worried over what he should do. 

According to the article humans should have lots of protein to be healthy. He couldn’t feed you fruit alone as he had been. He’d only assumed that’s what you ate because of your flat teeth and you hadn’t spat it out. He needed to learn how to cook if he was going to care for you properly. 

Of course, since driders didn’t cook there weren’t a lot of articles on the subject on the web. The most recipes they had were chopped raw meat seasoned with herbs on festival days. All he knew about cooking was that he needed fire and seasonings. 

He surmised you would need some sort of container to hold the food in, since it would be hot, so he ordered a metal bowl with a wooden handle. Then he picked out a gas flame used for chemistry, and some rods and tongues from the same scientific supplier. 

According to his research cooking was achieved by bringing the meat or starch to a certain temperature to kill bacteria and parasites the delicate human stomach couldn’t fight. That sounded simple enough, so he added a thermometer to his order. 

Then the food could be further flavored with herbs. He frowned. The only herbs he had were for the festival and those were kind of sacred. He wasn’t hyper religious but he followed traditions. Researching some herbs that were human safe as we went, he strapped you to his back to go find them in the forest. 

You woke up bouncing in a sling over his shoulders a little confused and tapped him to get his attention. 

“Are you awake, Dumpling?” he asked, pulling your sling to his front so he could look at you, “we’re hunting for herbs. Do you know what herbs humans like look like?” 

You wracked your brain, but you’d never been a cook in your tribe. You were a trapper and that’s all you knew about. Shaking your head you looked at him with a frown. 

He pinched your cheek.

“That’s okay,” he assured you, “we’ll find something good. I’ve got an app to identify them.” 

You all poked around for a while until Vass found some kind of red fruit. He plucked one and examined it, checking it on his phone. 

“I think this is called a tomato,” he said, handing it to you, “do you want to try it? The web says it's good for humans.” 

You nodded and took a big bite, chewing enthusiastically. 

Only it was not a tomato! Your mouth exploded with heat and you coughed violently, drooling from the spicy pepper. Vass watched in horror as his precious human appeared to be dying from some kind of horrible poisoning. Your face was red, you were frothing at the mouth, and wracking. 

“What’s wrong?!” he shrieked louder than you’ve ever heard him speak, grabbing your cheeks and examining you, looking for some way to fix it. 

He shook you as you tried to slow your coughing. 

“Speak Dumpling! Speak! What’s wrong?! How do I fix it?” he rattled, panicked. 

You looked up at him with tears running down your face and uttered one word. 

“Hot,” you gasped before dissolving back into a coughing fit. 

He pulled you to him, your face clamped between his palms, and pressed his mouth to yours, shoving his tongue between your lips. You were dazed by the pepper and confused by his kiss. It took you a moment to realize your mouth was cooling down as Vass spread a tiny amount of the numbing agent he used to kill his prey mixed with his saliva over the burning flesh. 

Your coughing slowed and you panted against his lips. He finally pulled away and rubbed your back, breathing deeply as if he had been the one under siege by spice. 

“No more spice hunting today,” he wheezed, “I’ll just use the festival spices until I can order something else.”

A few days later you sat happily in a swing Vass had made for you while you waited to sample his first attempt at cooked food. It smelled good, so you were optimistic. You’d watched him craft it with precision, carefully slicing the cut of meat into chunks to be small enough for your mouth and marinating it in something he kept calling festival spices and fruit juice.

Then he’d put it in a metal bowl and heated it until it smelled good, poking it with a little prod until he was happy with the reading on the small screen attached to it. 

You held out your hands greedily, eager to try it. You hadn’t had cooked food since before Vass had kidnapped you from your tribe. 

“Ah, ah, ah,” he said, swatting your hands away, “it has to cool back down to at least 90 degrees.” 

You pouted until he finally speared a piece on his claw and fed you. You chewed, considering the flavor. The festival spices were actually some kind of curry, though you had no idea what curry was. Giving him an approving smile, you opened your mouth ready for more. It was delicious! 

He fed you peacefully for a while, looking at you thoughtfully. 

“You know, you got me curious, Dumpling,” he said, “I almost heard it a little bit, but…what does your voice sound like?” 

You stopped mid chew, embarrassed. You hadn’t spoken in a long time it seemed and you weren't really sure it was allowed.

“Go ahead,” he said, waving a claw at you and withholding your next bite, “say something…quietly.” 

You swallowed and wondered what you should say. 

“Hi,” you murmured softly and he smiled. 

 “It’s pretty,” he said, then paused for a moment, “maybe…if you’re quiet...you can talk to me sometimes.” 

“Okay,” you said just as softly and decided that was enough conversation for the night, opening your mouth again for food. 

Vass chuckled and fed you until you were full and sleepy, curling you up on his chest to go to bed like he usually did. 

“Goodnight Dumpling,” he whispered to the darkness. 

“Goodnight, Vass,” you whispered back.

You had a bad feeling all week, something thing has been watching you. Everyone's knows it. Even Spooky knows. They aren't going more than a mile away from you in any direction.

Wild has set up the cooking pot to make dinner while the others all go over suppliers or handle mild injuries.

You and Wind are told to go to town and get more bombs, arrows, and some extra fabric. Which is fine.

Spooky follows you, because why wouldn't they? You're their person, the really like wind, and also the group is more protected than just you and Wind.

Their tail lashes side to side as they walk between you and the tree line. Eyes scanning as they move.

Besides, having Spooky with you makes merchants give you a better price. You and Legend think it's because they're scared that you'll have them attacked otherwise.

Wind flits from stall to stall, occasionally swiping paperclips when he can, something about causing as much chaos without damage as he can.

You're just glad it's paper clips this time instead of the fiasco that he caused last time. You can't handle him swiping that many cucoos ever again. Fifty is too many to hide inside an inn room.

When he isn't swiping paperclips, Wind is petting Spooky and cooing sweet things at the overly large cat.

You stop at the general store, knowing they'll probably have most of what you want.

You gather what you came for, paying a very reasonable price before you pat Spooky's head as thanks for helping.

Wind leads you all back to camp, flitting from side to side of the road as he tries to get a better look at the birds in the trees.

The walk is long but not the worst.

Dinner is ready when you get home, and Wild immediately slips Spooky a good chunk of raw deer.

"Hey, Spooks. Did you have fun?" Wild asks as he pets behind their ears.

Spooky just leans their entire weight into the attention, acting like an oversized housecat more than anything.

"Yeah? Did you keep Wind and (Y/n) outta trouble?"

Spooky gives a yawn at the question.

You move away from the champion and settle onto a log, bowl of stew in hand as the others talk around you.

Spooky comes to lay by your feet, falling asleep quickly. The panther snores like a housecat- just at a deeper pitch.

"Hey, (Y/n)," Time says as he sits opposite of you, "Did you get everything?"

"We did. Wind caused the typical trouble."

Time shakes his head with a soft upturn to his lips. He never really dissuades Wind, usually helping him silently from the sidelines.

"Of course. "

"We got really good deals today, Spooky was super helpful." You say, a little petty and loving to take every opportunity to point out how awesome Spooky is.

Becuase certain people were against bringing Spooky along. Those people have shut up. Becuase Spooky is a good kitty who hunts for you all.

Your eyes land back on the sleeping panther pinning you in place with their arms and head.

"That's good." Time says with a smile, entirely too fond of you and Wind and Spooky going to be a chaotic trio.

"We should probably get to bed early, the last week has been draining for all of us." You say, "I'll take first watch."

"You for have to -" Time tries to argue, ever the adult.

"Spooky is on my feet. I can't get up. Please just let me take the first watch."

"Okay." Time says while trying not to laugh at you.

It's comical really, letting the creature use your feet as a pillow. The way their head almost completely rests on both your feet.

Wind comes and sits down next to you, slipping Spooky a hunk of meat in greeting. You tried telling him and Wild both that they don't have to slip treats to Spooky all the time.

The two had only given offended looks and held eye contact while doing it again.

The others talk for a while as you zone out, letting your brain rest before you take watch. You probability need to grab a scratching post or something for Spooky...

Do giant cats like scratching posts?

You watch the fire as sleep creeps up on you.

The fireflies light up around you as you try to stay awake.

The panther purring on your feet does not help. Becuase everyone knows that a purring cat is a tranquilizer for most people.

Spooky wakes you with a yowl as they launch at a large figure. Their teeth truly terrifying as they bite the enemy's arm.

"Oh son of a -" your curse is cut off by Spooky's snarl as they dig in harder with their teeth.

You rush to grab your sword and watch as the enemy throws Spooky into a tree.

A truly unforgivable choice.

"Hey! That's my cat, you asshole!" You call loudly, as you charge with a sword.

You get knocked aside without effort as they block you.

You land next to Warriors with a thump and a groan, smacking his nose with your sprawling arm.

"What's going on?" Warriors demands as he starts to reach for his sword.

"Blademaster!" You shriek as you push up onto a damaged ankle.

Spooky launches at the enemy again just to get knocked aside.

You watch enraged as the others start waking up and grabbing weapons. This bastard hurt your cat and woke up the boys!

Wind charges forward as he is blinded bh rages, "That's my friend, you ass hat!"

The blade master throws Wind aside, too. And the groan the young teen lets out is more than concerning. Causing Warriors to rush to the boy.

Hyruld follows the captain's lead, hands already giving off blue light.

You charge at the figure only to be knocked to the ground by Spooky using your back as a place to vault off of.

Spooky jumps off your back and towards the blademasger, mauling him so viciously and quickly he can’t even fight.

He dies with a gurgle as Spooky rips his throat out before dropping it with nothing but disdain at your feet.

You smile softly, kneeling on an upset leg to praise and pet your cat.

"Good job baby." You coo, scratching their ear, "You're so good!"

You feel so loved, Spooky saved you!

Becuase everyone knows murdering enemies is the best love language.

Super Bowl Sunday and the Host Club

The party takes place at the Hitachiin residence. They have amazing TV’s, comfy couches, Hikaru and Kaoru’s parents are chill in this regard, and they love that the boys are having friends come over. Besides between Kyoya’s asshole dad, Tamaki’s asshole grandmother, and the twins begging for Haruhi to come over, it was the most obvious choice. 

Kaoru: Plays host to a degree. He especially dotes on Haruhi to make sure she’s enjoying herself. It’s her first time over to the Hitachiin house, and he’s a nervous boy. Everyone else has been over (whether invited [Kyoya, Honey, Mori] or not [Tamaki]), so they instantly make themselves right at home. He is trying to be more contentious about making sure Haruhi is okay, to the point that even a few other members who are less invested in the game raise an eyebrow. Is a neutral amount of invested. Can walk out of the room during regular plays, and is glued for the more intense parts.

Hikaru: Big football (and also soccer tbh) fan. Just sports in general. HIGHLY invested in the game. Is very disappointed when no one else showed up in face paint. Not even the king??? He is a “no talking allowed” kind of viewer, and at the most extreme plays runs to the next room that has another TV to watch in peace and quiet.  

Kyoya: Surprisingly very invested. Towards halftime and the end of the game, his phone is a blaaazing with notifications. This man made hella bets, and somehow won every one. 

Tamaki: Tries to out perform Rihanna at her own damn half time show. Gets tackled by multiple members (Hikaru and Honey) because they want to see the queen perform. 

Haruhi: Actually said yes right away when invited. Haruhi is there for the snacks and the commercials only. Tries to ask what’s going on a few times, but eventually gives up because again... she’s just there for the snacks and the  commercials. 

Mori: Munches on all the snacks, is fairly interested in the game, but then one of those devastating animal commercials comes on about pets that need adopted, and he’s a mess. On orders from Mori’s parents, Kyoya has already hidden Mori’s phone so he can’t call and immediately adopt *every* adoptable pet within a 100 mile radius.

Honey: One of the main snack suppliers. Pretty chatty with Haruhi and Kaoru. Very into the halftime show, and is immediately quiet. If you’ve read the manga, you know he’s into strong, slightly intimidating/scary women who could step on him. Honey as a Rihanna fan? yes.

The one with the cat

Haven’t had time to write lately, so here’s an old Ros snippet from Chapter 2. The Abernathy Farm is one of the Minutemen’s oldest and best suppliers of food in the Commonwealth. Unfortunately, not every member of the Abernathy family feels the same way about this arrangement.

In other words, you ever had that one awkward dinner where your friend starts arguing with their parents? Yeah.

“I want to join the Minutemen,” Lucy said. “Mom, I want to keep people safe.”

“And what about yourself, huh?” Connie demanded. “What are we going to do when the General comes knocking on the door with your body in a sack? We repay the Minutemen plenty. We give them our food, we keep their damn supply lines running, we let them build on our land, but they do not get to take you too.”

“Sweetheart,” Blake told Lucy, “we talked about this. We need you here.”

Connie rounded on him. “When exactly did you talk about this? Where was I for this conversation?”

“You have triple the workers since then,” Lucy said, irate. “You don’t need me. You just want to keep me here, like some sort of prisoner.”

“Don’t be overdramatic,” Connie said.

Lucy raised her voice. “I would rather get shot out there than die on this damn farm.”

“Lucy!” Blake scolded.

Ros had shrunk back in her chair, unsure what to do. Her adrenaline had kicked up again, turning her breath shallow and her hands unsteady. She didn’t like yelling she was unprepared for, whether or not it was directed at her. She kept her head ducked and her shoulders hunched, not looking at them.

It felt like an eternity before Blake remembered she existed. Voice low and hoarse, he said, “We have a guest.”

A thud rattled the spoons on the table. Lucy’s chair shrieked against the floor. “I’m not hungry,” she muttered, footsteps retreating. The front door slammed.

Connie’s chair shrieked too, with far less thunder. Her footsteps retreated in the opposite direction.

Blake sighed. Ros didn’t move.

After a second eternity, he said, “Not our finest moment. I’m sorry about that. A lot’s changed in a very short time. You’ll find most folks are still struggling to adjust.”

Ros shrugged. “No judgment from me.”

He nudged her bowl closer to her. “Eat. You’ll want to keep your strength up.”

She wasn’t hungry either, but she forced another bite to be polite. The meat tasted too rich, difficult to choke down.

With a “Mrrrp!” a warm weight landed in her lap. She jolted, knocking her hand against her bowl. Droplets of stew splattered the table. While Ros attempted to choke her heart down too, Maise kneaded her paws on her thighs.

“Lucy,” Blake muttered. “Let the cat in again.”

Adrenaline fading, Ros ran her fingers through the cat’s fur. Maisie rocked her haunches, settling into a loaf in her lap with a purr. “I can carry her out,” Ros offered half-heartedly.

He smiled. “Naw, I don’t see any harm in letting her stay a little while. I won’t tell Connie if you don’t.”

Good, because the cat didn’t seem to be going anywhere. Ever. Ros was stuck in this chair now.

And, stuck in place with the heated weight in her lap, she took another bite of stew. Then a couple more. Maybe she was a little hungry after all.

She didn’t register Blake watching her until he asked, “Ros, how old are you?”

She shifted all her focus to petting the cat, feeling a frown creep across her face. Her age wasn’t something she usually gave out to strange men.

“Sorry,” he said. “Add that to my list of faux pas tonight. Didn’t mean anything by it. I just…I can’t get over how much you remind me of her—Mary, my eldest. She was twenty-one. Would be twenty-three now.” He didn’t need to clarify. Ros had seen the grave while scouting out the property.

Ros said, “I’ll give the clothes back in the morning.”

“No. No, keep them. They’ll just sit in a box otherwise, go to waste. Better they live on.”

In other words, he was seeing ghosts. It would bug her, wearing a dead girl’s clothes, if everything she owned hadn’t been scavenged or passed down from the dead. Their whole world was the inheritance of a fatal mistake. There were ghosts everywhere, in every piece of clothing, every old mattress and power pylon. Even her Pip-Boy had a ghost in it.

Winnie didn’t though. The irony that Ros’s strongest tie to life was a temperamental, malfunctioning robot who was neither alive nor sentient was not lost on her.

If she was kind, she would remind him she wasn’t his daughter—that he was only seeing what he wanted to see. She doubted she even resembled her. She didn’t have Blake’s square jaw or Connie’s blond hair and blue eyes. She wasn’t a synth; she wouldn’t put on someone else’s clothes and take their place. She wasn’t anyone’s daughter either. That was an attachment, a relationship that was off the table. Permanently.

But she wasn’t particularly kind, so she didn’t say anything. She pet Maisie until her bowl was empty, and then she silently helped Blake clean up until Connie reappeared to snatch the dish cloth from her hand and send her off to bed. Ros slunk away without meeting her bloodshot gaze.

Prompt #10: “Channel” - FFXIV Write 2022

Evander should have been sourcing copper, but sourcing copper was a poor use of his time, a poorer use of his considerable creative talents, and most importantly, boring as shit. Instead, he'd been carving narrow grooves into thin panels of wood, assembling various pulleys, catapults and other small contraptions, repurposing half-finished models and clockwork devices, and meticulously measuring all sorts of dimensions around his apartment.

The first design involved dominoes, and while that was satisfying as hell, it wasn't terribly practical. What was he going to do, reset every domino every time? He just knew that within a day he'd be missing a few pieces because he had just slightly misjudged the force of some deadfall or zipline carriage, and it'd be even sooner than that when one of his pets decided to haul off a stray domino for some inscrutable purpose.

So dominoes were no good.

Mark II was intended to be all pulleys, levers, and for about 20 ill-advised minutes, a high-powered pneumatic pump.

Mark III was, for some reason, going to involve hydraulics. Evander still wasn't sure why he thought that was a good idea after the disaster that came from trying to incorporate simple (if overzealous) pneumatics.

Mark IV, though? He went back to basics and finally hit his stride. Now, thanks to yalms and yalms of carefully carved tracks and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of ball bearings from other projects, he could accomplish a startling array of household chores without leaving his desk. Send a glass marble down one channel and it would roll down the track he attached to his wall, picking up just enough velocity that it could flip a lever that would dump some scraps into the crab dish. It didn't matter much what was getting dumped, since they were both scavengers, but for now it was dried fish. Put a steel bearing on the same track and it would pick up even more speed and force, which would trip the lever to a further setting, causing a small bucket of grapes to be lowered for his ravenous lamb. You could stick another bearing into a spring-loaded tube and pull a plunger to send it sailing into a small cart that would get propelled across another track to the other side of the room, where it would trigger a small self-resetting trubuchet that would launch him a piece of whatever was in his fruit bowl. Much to his delight, most of the fruit landed safely in a soft, pillowy basket next to his desk, and only the bananas would get flung full-force at his face, and that was only on account of their awkward shape. There were nearly half a dozen other channels, tubes, grooves and the like that, when loaded with the appropriately weighted sphere, would accomplish similar pointlessly whimsical tasks.

He was proud of Mark IV.

But now that it was done, he should probably get to work on sourcing that copper.

On the other hand, if he could work out the kinks with the pistons—pneumatic or hydraulic, he didn't need to be picky—Mark V might be capable of even more.

Evander's eyes glanced from the rolodex on his desk that contained contact info for all sorts of different metal suppliers and salvage yards to the pad of hastily scrawled plans and blueprints that had led to the contraptions that lined nearly every surface of the front room of his apartment. His hand, with no sense of shame or hesitation, reached for a pen.

One Hundred Years Ago, Cincinnati's New Year Began With . . . A Fox Hunt?

Bright and early on New Year’s Day 1923, several hundred residents of Milford, Ohio, gathered on Tealtown Road for a fox hunt. The hunters were not decked out in full regalia for an English-style romp, once described by Oscar Wilde as “the unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable.” No, these were sturdy township yeomen, farmers out to protect their poultry. According to the Enquirer [28 December 1922]:

“Union Township is thickly infested with foxes and some real sport is assured. Foxes to be taken alive.”

Only the hunt captains were allowed to ride horses; the rest of the hunters marched on foot. No firearms were permitted, only clubs used to beat the bushes, and there were no dogs baying at the scent. Still, the Milford hunt netted six foxes captured alive and auctioned (for fur? pets?) at prices ranging from $9.50 to $18.75.

The remainder of Cincinnati’s residents were apparently nursing hangovers. Despite the imposition, two years previously, of Prohibition, and despite the ubiquitous presence of liquor-control agents, it is obvious that the flowing bowl ran unimpeded. The whole of Downtown was an outdoor party, according to the Cincinnati Post [1 January 1923]:

“The New Year was given a tremendous ovation, so to speak. Clanging of bells, blowing of whistles and discharging of firearms seemed louder than ever before. Automobile horns added to the din. Long before midnight those unlucky ones who had failed to make table reservations at hotels started to parade the streets. Theater crowds added to the throng.”

Police reported multiple incidents of people shooting pistols, rifles and shotguns. One of the few arrests that night was Charles Nichols, apprehended at Fifth and John streets firing a handgun loaded with blanks. Mary Daugherty, a widow living at 1715 Vine Street, suffered a mysterious wound in her right hand that police believe was caused by a falling bullet.

Adding to the din was a massive explosion on Vine Street at Fourteenth, which sent a sewer lid thirty feet into the air, returning to earth with a resounding clang. Investigators rushed to the scene and determined that fumes in the subterranean tunnels had ignited to create the blast.

With all the obviously lubricated revelry surrounding them, it is surprising that police made very few arrests for liquor violations. A twelve-year-old boy was found unconsciously inebriated in a vacant lot in the West End. Police transported him to the hospital and initiated a search for his supplier and for his mother, who was nowhere to be found. William Rockey, the village smithy of Loveland, was hauled in on charges that he was supplementing his ironmongering by distributing moonshine by the gallon. Norwood’s arrests amounted to a single tosspot, who was provided with a cell in which to sleep it off.

There was less liquor to go around on New Year’s Eve 1922 because prohibition agents had raided two 100-gallon stills, one in Mount Airy and one in Avondale. It appeared that both stills were operated by the same gang of bootleggers. In addition to the stills, agents confiscated 35 barrels of mash and 50 gallons of finished product.

The big excitement in town on New Year’s Eve was out in Price Hill, where a gang of Cleveland auto thieves raised a ruckus at the Warsaw Avenue police station. Harry Forthoffer and Harry Legoy robbed a Cleveland clubman and drove to Cincinnati to meet up with Forthoffer’s brother, John.
