@maneaterwithtail If I added my response your post would be like three miles long so I’m making a new one.
ANYWAY, the thing that I like about FangBill is that they just complete each other. It’s very much “martial love,” as Joseph Campbell would say--he defines martial love/soul mates as “your soul recognizing another” (paraphrasing because I can’t be bothered to go find my copy of The Power of Myth right now, but if you get your hands on a copy I’d recommend giving it a chance), and that’s what FangBill feels like. (If that doesn’t make sense, try the song “Little Person” and cry, like I am right now.)
It’s very clear by the end of the series that they really think of themselves more as a unit, and while that’s not inherently romantic obviously, it’s certainly applicable to that kind of love.
I know I’ve mentioned this before in our DMs, but the show also eggs shippers on. There’s the bromance comments in the pilot; FangBill showing lots of physical affection; the fact that there’s an entire episode pointing out that “battle brothers” is not referring to seeing someone as your brother (fun fact: in John Boswell’s Same-Sex Unions In Premodern Europe, he points out that some Slavic ceremonies were literally translated as “becoming brothers,” but which obviously had homoerotic overtones); the fact that they went a whole episode of having Cid and Fangbone fight over Bill without once giving a solid hint Bill is developing a crush on Cid. And then there’s more esoteric stuff like Fred Bone’s Ganymede club comment, or the fact that Bill likes an obvious He-Man parody when lots of LGBT+ people interpret He-Man as gay (the latter would be innocuous on its own, the former is certainly not).
I try not to call queer-baiting/coding on things, because I feel like shippers have watered them down to “ohmygod they looked at each other for two seconds, they’re so gay-coded!!!”, but...
Overall, it’s just a really homoaffectional show (which means a deeply emotional same-sex relationship which may or may not include a sexual component). Honestly, they’re one of those pairings where I’m fine with platonic or romantic material, so long as that strong homoaffectionalism remains. (Also worth noting: the guy who coined the term, Paul D Hardman, pointed out that it’s often very hard to tell from the outside whether something’s a romantic or just deeply platonic relationship, if there’s not an obvious sexual component.)
That, and a lot of my other ships (see YinxYuck, Yang/Roger Jr. or even newer stuff like EddTord) are angsty as hell, so FangBill is a nice reprieve from that. They’re just such a healthy ship all around. (Also Bill Goodwin Is My Son And I Would Take a Bullet For Him, so I want him to be with Fangbone in any capacity because they clearly belong in each other’s lives.)
