‘It’s time to panic’: Bilawal vows to defeat PTI in its stronghold K-P
Tumblr media
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday fired a broadside at Prime Minister Imran Khan, saying that his party will defeat the ruling PTI in its political stronghold of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) in next general elections.
“PPP jiyalas [workers] will foil your [PM Imran] conspiracies… they will hold ‘selected and puppet’ accountable,” said the scion of Bhutto family while addressing a rally in Nowshera district of K-P.
In his fiery speech, Bilawal warned PM Imran, saying, “The time to panic has started… PPP will hold a power show in Peshawar to mark its foundation day”.
He said the party will send the incumbent government packing and restore the rule of genuine public representatives.
Bilawal said PM Imran-led government was not any making effort to reduce inflation in the country instead it was only “conspiring to rig” the next general elections.
The PPP chairman while referring to Wednesday’s joint session of parliament said the government did not pass a single bill to provide relief to the masses. “70-year-old player can no longer fool youngsters,” he added.
Bilawal said PM Imran’s policies have only brought “destruction” to the country and added that ruling party has miserably failed to fulfil its promises of bringing a “change” in the country.
“Today everyone is in pain… country is facing unprecedented inflation... unemployment and poverty have hit historic highs,” he remarked.
Bilawal said only PPP can resolve the issues of masses by implementing its people-friendly manifesto.
“When they [rulers] are being selected... they will only server their [selectors] not the people,” he added.

Govt expresses displeasure over ECP's reply to PM Imran Khan Federal Ministers talking to media in Islamabad after the ECP’s press release. ISLAMABAD: The federal ministers on Friday expressed their disapproval of the way the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) released a press release to respond to Prime Minister Imran Khan, adding that the government is “unhappy” with the way the commission dealt with the matter. According to an article by Geo.tv,   the Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry,  along with Federal Information Minister Shibli Faraz and Senator-elect Barrister Ali Zafar, was speaking to the media after the ECP fired back on PM Imran’s allegation of corruption in Senate elections. The science and technology minister clarified that the prime minister and the PTI respect the Election Commission and all the institutions of Pakistan. “There is no [truth] to the rumour that PTI will be protesting in front of the ECP tomorrow. ECP is revered by us and will remain so,” said Chaudhry. The minister, however, stated that the institutions show their “independence through their actions and not through press releases”. “It is irresponsible to issue a press release on Prime Minister’s stance,” said the minister. The lawmaker from Jhelum clarified that PM Imran Khan, in his statement, said that the responsibility to make elections free and fair was not fulfilled in the Senate elections held on Wednesday. “This is not a thing to be upset about, but measures need to be taken.” He stated that PM Imran meant that the government and the ECP should work together to “develop a mechanism that will stop rigging” and ensure free and fair elections. “I want to assure the chief election commissioner (CEC) and members that we want to see you strong,” said Chaudhry. ‘Shocked’ over ECP asking PTI for evidence The minister said he is “shocked” over the ECP which said that the PTI should come forward with “evidence.” He said that the evidence was there in the form of “videos of vote-buying, Sindh Information Minister Nasir Shah’s audio, and Maryam Nawaz’s speech.” The minister hoped that the ECP will “reviews its stance and not rely on press releases”. He added that he rather expected the ECP to “prove its independence through its actions”. “From Daska elections till Senate elections you have to realise that there have been shortcomings and it cannot be said that all that has happened is correct,” said Chaudhry, adding that if the ECP requires the government’s help, then it is “available 24/7”. Vote of confidence against PM The federal minister also spoke about the vote of confidence sought by PM Imran Khan on Saturday’s session. “As far as a vote of confidence is concerned, our 177 members have arrived in Islamabad,” said Chaudhry, adding that the parliamentary party meeting held today will be attended by the members as well. He repeated that this was not the “first challenge for PM Imran Khan”. “He has been taking Pakistan out of challenges all his life, be it sports, health or politics. Tomorrow, PTI and its allies will give a vote of confidence to PM Imran Khan,” said Chaudhry. Before Fawad Chaudhry, Information Minister Shibli Faraz stated that the PM spoke about the “most important issue” facing the country in his speech which was “free and fair elections”. “Elections are the foundation of democracy. And when the foundation is correct, then the building will also be fine,” said Faraz. He also spoke about the Opposition, alleging that it introduced the money culture and eroded the moral fabric of the country. He blamed the main Opposition parties, the PPP and PML-N, for it. https://timespakistan.com/govt-expresses-displeasure-over-ecps-reply-to-pm-imran-khan/12667/

Pak considers registering treason case against PML-N leader over remarks on release of Abhinandan
Tumblr media
LAHORE: The Pakistan government is mulling over registering a treason case against a senior Opposition leader for his controversial statement that the country handed over captured Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan Varthaman to India under pressure, a top minister has said. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Wednesday said that “legs were shaking and forehead perspiring” at a meeting of Pakistan’s top leaders, including Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, wherein Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi pleaded to release Wing Commander Abhinandan, saying if he was not released, India would attack Pakistan. “Legs were shaking and forehead perspiring, and the foreign minister (Qureshi) told us, ‘For God’s sake, let him (Varthaman) go back now because India is attacking Pakistan at 9 PM in the night’,” Sadiq said, recalling the meeting which was also attended by parliamentary leaders, including those from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and PML-N, and added that “India was not planning to attack…They just wanted to kneel before India and send back Abhinandan.” Responding to Sadiq’s remarks, Pakistan Interior Minister Ejaz Shah told reporters that the government was pondering over registering a treason case against Sadiq as police have received a number of complaints against him. He said those toeing the line of India should better go to Amritsar. Posters of Sadiq have also appeared in Lahore, dubbing him a “traitor”. A number of posters and banners with pictures of Wing Commander Abhinandan and Sadiq were displayed in the constituency of the former National Assembly Speaker. Portraying Sadiq in Abhinandan’s getup, the posters read: “Mir Sadiq, Mir Jaffar… Ayaz Sadiq.” The PML-N has strongly reacted to the move blaming the PTI government for ‘awarding traitor certificates’ to its political opponents. PML-N Punjab information secretary lawmaker Azma Bokhari said the one who put up “traitor” posters of Sadiq must be having a criminal record like in the past cases registered against the PML-N leadership. The 37-year-old Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot was captured by the Pakistani Army on February 27 after his MiG-21 Bison jet was shot down in a dogfight with Pakistani jets during aerial combat. In the early hours of February 26, 2019, the IAF jets bombed the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terror camps in Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan and avenged the Pulwama terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 40 CRPF personnel. Before his jet was hit, Abhinandan downed an F-16 fighter of Pakistan. He was released on the night of March 1 by Pakistan. In a speech in the National Assembly, Sadiq said that Prime Minister Imran Khan skipped the high-level meeting, which was attended by top leadership, including Army chief Gen Bajwa and Foreign Minister Qureshi.

With CAA, Article 370 volleys, PM Modi takes aim at Opposition - caa 2019
Tumblr media
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Opposition, blaming the Congress and the Left parties for hiding behind the Constitution to encourage those who were violating it, reading out quotes from three former Jammu & Kashmir chief ministers to justify their preventive detentions, terming the anti-CAA protests as anarchic, and staunchly defending the changed citizenship law by highlighting the plight of minorities in Pakistan. The Prime Minister, at the same time, called for the ongoing Parliament session to be “dedicated” to the economy while saying that its fundamentals – from fiscal deficit targets to manageable inflation to macroeconomic stability – were strong. Modi also spoke in the Rajya Sabha later -- the first time he addressed both houses of Parliament in the same day -- focussing more deeply on the economy and bringing in the National Population Register (NPR) into the discussion by asking Opposition leaders not to “mislead” people by “lying” about what he called a “regulation administrative process”. In a fiery Lok Sabha speech often interrupted by objections and interjections from the Opposition benches, Modi, in his reply to the Motion of Thanks by President Ram Nath Kovind, said: “The people who are trying to lecture us to save the Constitution, need to repeat their own words to themselves. These are the same people who imposed the Emergency, tried to take judicial rights away from the Supreme Court, tried to end the right to life, made the most changes in the Constitution, dismissed state governments dozens of times, tore Cabinet decisions in press conferences, and put up a remote control above the prime minister and the PMO.” Linking that with ongoing agitations in several parts of the country against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, or CAA, Modi said that it was these same people who were standing next to those who wanted to divide the country (“tukde-tukde”), and were encouraging people through lies and speeches to undermine democratic decisions. “Can the path of anarchy run the nation?” Modi asked. The speech was broken into eight distinct parts: Modi first addressed questions raised by members about the hurry with which the government was bringing in major legislations in this term; he then spoke about integrating the North-east and held the recent Bodo peace accord as an example; spoke on measures to boost the farm sector; called for a constructive debate on the economy, which, he said, was ploughed and ready to seed; criticised “disruptive and violent” protests while citing the Constitution; castigated those who slammed the nullification of special provisions for J&K; offered a treatise on why CAA was necessary, including quotes from Jawaharlal Nehru and past Hindu legislators in the Pakistan parliament; and finally called on fellow parliamentarians to come together to work for development rather than division. “Instead of this, come, let’s sit together and run the country. Let’s take India on the path to becoming a $5 trillion economy, let’s resolve to give clean drinking water to the 15 crore families who don’t have it, let’s work together to give every poor person a home, and every farmer, fisherman, cattle raiser a better income. Let’s make it possible for every panchayat to have broadband connectivity and to make ‘One India, Leading India’. Come, let us sit together to take India forward,” he said. The Congress rejected Modi’s contentions, with its former president Rahul Gandhi calling the PM’s speech an attempt at distracting the people. “His style is of distracting the country. Talk about the main issue Prime Minister ji. Tell the youth what you are doing about jobs...His style is to distract the country. He had said two crore jobs will be given to youngsters, but five and a half years have passed. Last year, one crore youth lost jobs, he is unable to say a word,” he said outside Parliament. The Congress also said the PM’s comments on India’s former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru -- Modi said the country was partitioned so that “one particular person could become the PM” -- were unacceptable. “It is extremely unfortunate and deeply regrettable that the prime minister’s comments oscillated between stand-up comedy, half truths and rank communalism. It is regrettable that the Prime Minister of India should quote one of his illustrious predecessors Jawaharlal Nehru completely out of context,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari, calling on Modi to apologise for it. While the PM’s speech was peppered with strong jibes and sarcastic attacks on the Opposition, particularly the Congress and its former president Rahul Gandhi, the most combative points of his speech were when he was talking about the CAA protests and Kashmir. On Kashmir, particularly, he quoted comments by the former CMs made in August – at the time when Parliament cleared the nullification of Articles 370 and 35A, and the reorganisation of the region into two Union Territories – to suggest that they were not in sync with the spirit of the Indian Constitution. Saying that former CM Mehbooba Mufti of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called the move a “betrayal”, Omar Abdullah of the National Conference (NC) warned of an “earthquake” in the aftermath of the decision, and Farooq Abdullah said people would stop waving the Indian flag in the region, Modi asked if any “true Indian” would “advocate the cause of such people”. Mehbooba and the Abdullahs have been in preventive custody for the past six months – a move that has been criticised by opposition parties, civil society members, and raised in international forums. Representatives from the NC and the PDP rejected Modi’s claims. “What former CMs had said in context of the Article 370 was that it is a right and guarantee given to them under Indian Constitution,’’ said PDP spokesperson and youth leader Tahir Sayeed. NC spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar said the government must answer what development had taken place since the Article 370 move for the region’s development since that was one of the reasons given for it. In what was his first speech in Parliament on the anti-CAA protests, the Prime Minister repeated the government’s assurance that the law would not impact any Indian citizen. “From this House today, I would like to make it clear that the CAA law will not affect any Indian citizens, whether they are Muslim, Hindu, Sikh or from any religion,” he said. CAA, passed by Parliament on December 11, identifies people from religious minorities from some neighbouring Muslim-majority countries as those eligible for Indian citizenship if they have faced persecution. Just as he brought up Nehru in the Lok Sabha, Modi quoted Lal Bahadur Shastri, Ram Manohar Lohia, and a Congress Working Committee resolution of 1947 to contend that CAA was an idea that had endorsement in the past from the same parties that now opposed it. In the same vein, he brought up NPR in the Rajya Sabha speech, saying it was the previous regime’s idea but was now being used to stir up a frenzy by “provoking” people with “false information”. “The NPR is a normal administrative process. You brought it in 2010, now you are misleading people? These are procedural issues, don’t spread rumours,” he said. With the Delhi elections just two days to go, the national capital made only fleeting appearances in the speeches – briefly while talking about anti-CAA protests; during a reference to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway as an example of the government’s pace of work; when he mentioned a scheme for regularising 1,700 unauthorised colonies; and once towards the end when he said that people accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi had been made chief ministers by the Congress. (The reference was to Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath, who was named in connection with the riots but has not been formally accused and denies any link). Modi said that the difference between his government and opposition governments was its ability to deliver, and its intention to take everyone along (“sabka saath”). “Where the Congress saw Muslims, we see Indians,” he said, naming Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, Ashfaqullah Khan, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Abdul Hamid and former president APJ Abdul Kalam as a few examples of Muslims who are forever linked with India’s values and identity. If we had done work like the Congress, it would have taken us 50 years to get the enemy property law, 35 years to get next generation fighter aircraft and, even after 28 years, we wouldn’t have had a benami property law. Modi also addressed specific members of the Opposition – including Gandhi, Congress’s floor leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Shashi Tharoor – for specific remarks made by them inside and outside the House in the past few days. To Gandhi, who said in a rally in Old Delhi on Wednesday that the youth of the country would “lathi-charge Modi” over unemployment, the Prime Minister said he was happy with the forewarning and would prepare to make his back ready for the lathis by doing more ‘surya namaskara’. When Gandhi first got up to object to Modi’s comment, the PM, without naming him, said: “I have been speaking for 30-40 minutes, but the current has finally reached only now.” Read the full article

After three days of ruckus, Shahbaz Sharif delivers speech in NA uninterrupted
Tumblr media
Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday finally delivered his speech in the Lower House after three days of rowdy behaviour by lawmakers.
Moments before Shahbaz's speech, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak had announced that the government and Opposition had reached an agreement to run the National Assembly "in an orderly manner".
The announcement followed days of ruckus and general disorder in the lower house of Parliament as the Treasury and Opposition benches sparred over the federal budget for the 2022 fiscal year.
Speaking on the floor of the NA today, the Opposition leader said all of the lawmakers present in the assembly were elected by 220 million Pakistanis and they were responsible for changing the nation's future for the better.
There was complete silence in the house during Shehbaz Sharif’s speech, who lashed out at the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan for “ruining lives of Pakistanis”.
'Fake budget'
Shahbaz, referring to the 21 government bills that were passed on June 10, said the lawmaking done a few days ago has flaws in it.
The Opposition leader slammed the government, saying the budget was "fake", as the pockets of the poor people were "empty" and they were not able to feed their families.
"In three years, 20 million people have been pushed below the poverty line, while the growth rate has come down drastically in the last year," he said.
The wages of labourers have fallen by 18% in the last three years as people keep asking where are the promised 10 million jobs and 5 million houses, the Opposition leader said.
"The unemployment rate stands at 15% [...] Food prices have shot up by 30% in the last three years," he said.
"There are unprecedented differences between the provinces [...] If the government only develops Punjab and leaves out rest of the provinces, then this is not development," the Opposition leader said.
Shahbaz, further slamming the government, said it had devoted its energy to revenge instead of accountability. "The Opposition has been subjected to the worst kind of revenge."
PPP's Khurshid Shah, his son, and PML-N's Khawaja Asif remain behind bars till date, Shahbaz lamented.
He said when coronavirus had hit the country, the Opposition had sat down with the government to discuss a plan of action, but Prime Minister Imran Khan left the meeting.
"You had pushed us against the wall even when we tried to help you during the stressful times of coronavirus," he said.
Casting aspersions on the government's spendings, he asked that why were billions of rupees not spent on coronavirus vaccines?
"If this budget will not reduce poverty, then we condemn it, and we will not allow this house to pass it," Shahbaz said. "No nation prospers if the government destroys the agricultural and industrial sector," Shahbaz said.
The Opposition leader said Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin claims the country's economy is boosting, but despite that, wheat prices went up from Rs35 to Rs70.
Shahbaz said 1.1 million tonnes of sugar were exported with the prime minister's approval, and a subsidy worth billions of rupees was given on it.
"First sugar and wheat were exported, then they were imported — it incurred a loss of billions of rupees on the national exchequer," Shahbaz said.
'PM's seat remains empty'
Shahbaz said during the PML-N's government the International Monetary Fund's programme had been completed, but now, the progress has reversed during PTI's three years.
"The government should inform the Opposition about the conditions of the IMF," he said, as the government keeps reiterating that the international money lender had imposed harsh conditions.
The Opposition leader slammed the prime minister for not taking the house in confidence.
Shahbaz, pointing towards the prime minister's seat, said: "This seat remains empty when there is a discussion on Afghanistan; this seat remains empty when there is a discussion on Palestine and Kashmir, this seat remains empty when there is a discussion on inflation and unemployment; this seat remains empty when there is a discussion on coronavirus."
Taking a jibe at PM Imran Khan again, Shahbaz said that before his election, he stood upon a container and made tall claims about ending corruption from the country, but failed to do so.
"Today, the practice of giving and taking bribes has become rampant in Punjab [under the PTI government's rule]," he said.
Shahbaz also talked about the efforts the previous PML-N government employed to make Pakistan better and said that it was Nawaz Sharif who eliminated several problems of the country, including terrorism, electricity load shedding, and patwari culture because he had all the provinces on the same page.
What happened in NA?
On Tuesday, the NA proceedings witnessed humiliating scenes when the ministers and parliamentarians were seen creating a ruckus, using filthy language, whistling, and attacking each other with budget books during the speech of the Opposition Leader in NA Shahbaz Sharif on the federal budget.
During the uproar, one of the members from the treasury benches threw a book towards Shahbaz, which fell on the dais in front of him. The members from two sides came close to a physical brawl in front of the NA Speaker’s chair, but he could do nothing except for making requests and suspending proceedings time and again.
The security staff of the NA made a protective circle around the Opposition leader and pushed back the government members, who were trying to move towards him.
Opposition members also encircled Shahbaz Sharif to prevent him from any attack.
In the meantime, one of the security staffers, Asif Kiani, was slightly injured when a book hit him close to his eye.
A video showing Ali Nawaz Awan of the PTI abusing an opponent also went viral on social media. However, the PTI member said it was Shaikh Rohail Asghar of the PMLN who used abusive language first.
7 lawmakers banned from NA for 'disorderly conduct'
Following the incident, the NA Speaker Qaiser imposed a ban on seven lawmakers, preventing them from entering the Parliament House until further notice.
The notice said these lawmakers' conduct was “grossly disorderly” during the speech of Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif.
Three members from the ruling PTI and four opposition members — three from PML-N and one from PPP — have been found to have “violated” the rules despite the “repeated direction” of the speaker.
“Therefore, I order for withdrawal of aforesaid Members from the precincts of the National Assembly immediately. These members are required not to enter into the precincts of the Parliament House till further orders,” the statement released by the Speaker stated.
The lawmakers who are barred from the assembly include Ali Gohar Khan (PML-N), Chaudhary Hamid Hameed (PML-N), Sheikh Rohale Asghar (PML-N) Faheem Khan (PTI), Abdul Majeed Khan (PTI), Ali Nawaz Awan (PTI), and Syed Agha Rafiullah (PPP).
The action was taken after a meeting of Asad Qaiser with Prime Minister Imran Khan during which the NA situation was discussed.
On Wednesday, Shahbaz once again failed to deliver his speech in the National Assembly for the third time — despite being surrounded by sergeants-at-arms — as commotion by lawmakers continued in the house.
Shahbaz made several attempts to deliver his speech on the federal budget but did not succeed as members from the treasury benches continued to disrupt him, despite NA Speaker Asad Qaiser's repeated warnings and directives to maintain order in the house.
There were three attempts made by the speaker to conduct proceedings, with the session put into recess twice, before finally being put off for a third time in the day.
The speaker, before putting off the proceedings for the first time, said that the events that had transpired on June 15 were unfortunate and that he would not continue the session until the lawmakers sorted out their differences.
"Action has been taken against lawmakers who had used indecent language in the house on June 15 [...] a parliamentary committee will be formed to probe the matter further," he said.
The committee will comprise of six members each from the treasury and Opposition benches, the speaker announced, before he delayed the session for the first time as lawmakers continued to disrupt Shahhaz's speech.
After 15 minutes, the session resumed and Shahbaz spoke for a while, slamming Prime Minister Imran Khan for "ordering lawmakers to use indecent language" in the NA.
As he delivered his address, the treasury benches started to hurl abuses at him, with the speaker repeatedly asking them to maintain decorum in the house.
Yesterday's proceedings in the NA were one of the "darkest days" in Pakistan, Shahbaz said, adding he could not repeat the words that the members from the treasury benches had uttered.
"Mr Speaker, it was your duty to maintain order and prevent such an incident from happening [...] even today they haven't stopped," he has said.
While the PML-N president leader was speaking, an Opposition member threw a "full bottle" at the treasury benches, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar said, adding that it hit and injured Akram Cheema.
The speaker asked the sergeants to show the door to the rowdy member throwing bottles and other missiles towards Shahbaz and postponed the session.
When the session resumed for a second time, the chaos did too.
As it became apparent the uproar has no signs of letting up, the speaker postponed the proceedings for the day.
"We will not resume the session today until we arrive at an understanding on how it is we wish to proceed," he said.
Earlier in the day, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak announced that the government and Opposition have reached an agreement to run the National Assembly 'in an orderly manner'.
Flanked by Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Khattak said during his press conference that NA Speaker Asad Qaiser had held a meeting with PTI, PPP and PML-N leaders to discuss the situation.
Khattak regretted that the ruckus in the assembly was not a good omen for the Constitution and democracy and condemned the unfortunate events in the house.
“It is the responsibility of both the Opposition and the government to maintain order in the House. We must respect each other."
