I just read the news about Creatures Inc and now I’m dying to see if Nintendo and GameFreak brings the hammer down on them.

For those who haven’t heard: Creatures Inc, the company who makes the 3D models for Pokemon, is no longer listed as a main client for the Pokemon Company. All traces of Creatures seem to have disappeared from the site.

It’s unsure right now if it was a mistake or if it’s somehow tied to the plethora of pre-release leaks or the model re-use controversy.

Character Strengths: Kaisa can create any inanimate object.

Character Weaknesses: The more she eats, the more material she has to work with, so she needs considerable food ingestion for her Quirk to be effective. However, it takes her a longer period of time and more skin exposed to create large objects, to the point where she forces large objects through her costume leaving it shredded, though she claims she can just repair it. If she create too much without replacing her calories, she'll grow weak and anemic.

Pokémon Build & Battle Cube - Part 1

So if any of you have been following me for a while, either here or on Twitter, you know I love to draft Magic the Gathering. You probably also know my fondness of other card games, like Force of Will. But today, I want to talk about the game not built to draft, Pokémon. Pokémon is built for sealed or constructed, and I should just accept that, right? WRONG.

Pokémon can be drafted. Mark my words. It can even be cubed.

So, if you're not familiar with MtG or FoW, what is a draft? What is a cube? Allow me to explain.

A draft is a limited format, similar to sealed. You are given a number of packs (typically three or four) and sit with anywhere from four to twelve other players.

First, open your first pack. Look at all the cards. Feel them. Smell them. If this game has a guaranteed slot, take that out (like a land in MtG or an Energy in Pokemon). Then pick the card you want to keep from the pack. Pass the pack to your left. Then take the pack from the player to your right when they have made a selection. You now pick a card from their remainder. These packs will circle the table until the packs run out. Then open the next pack and go the other direction. Continue until all the packs are used up, and you have a nice stack of cards, most of which will be in one or two attributes.

Now we run into our first problem. Magic has five main colors to pick from. That means if you're aiming at being in two colors, you have ten combos to pick from. If Colorless or Snow are here, typically one pair will be meant to hang out with them, like the extra kid in a group project.

FoW is the same way - it has five attributes to pick from. These being Fire, Water, Wind, Darkness and Light. Time and Moon are like Colorless and Snow above, they just show up and hang out with another pair.

Pokemon has 9.

Of course, Colorless energy in Pokémon is like Generic is Magic or Void in FoW, in that it plays with all of them, and Dragon is always a combo. So we have 9.

9 energies means you don't have 10 combos. You have 36. That's a lot to keep track of in a draft. How can you pick between 36 things? Even if you're like "Oh, I'm totally playing Psychic" that's still only dropping you to 8 options. Meanwhile, if I was in Magic and said "I'm totally playing Blue" I'm down to 4. It's literally twice as hard to draft Pokemon without help.

Enter the Build and Battle format.

This was a format introduced in 2019, if I recall, but from what I could find, they only made four premade packs.

The idea is simple - you have three types of packs. Theme Packs are all one Energy, and you get two of these. This tells you what to take in a draft. Each theme is 9 cards, 7 Pokemon and 2 Trainers or Items.

Trainer Packs have four cards from a pool of four, but you might have duplicates. So either 2-2 or 2-1-1 or 1-1-1-1 of four generally useful trainer cards.

Draft Packs are your standard 10 card Pokemon booster. You get four of these.

So let's duplicate that for a cube! But what's a cube? A cube is a curated set of cards so you and your friends can draft repeatedly. Think of it as turning a TCG into a Deck-Building Game with friends!

So what if we made our own themes packs and card pool and trainer pool, and made a way for us to play Build & Battle with our friends repeatedly?

That's a project I already started. And here's what we're looking at.

So what do you do in the world’s most awkward summer? (between high school and college)

It’s been over two weeks since graduation so I feel semi-qualified to answer this question.

It’s the summer between being a high school senior and a college freshman, where I don’t really know what to call myself anymore? It’s kinda sad realizing that I won’t be there in the fall to shepherd my chosen underclassmen through their crises but from afar. And overall setting up myself to live somewhere else long-term. It’s finally sinking in that through all the myths and legends you get to read about, I’m going to be an everyday student at MIT. I don’t know anymore where to hype it up or down, especially since I spent the last six months with a fervor equivalent to any fandom phase (which sure doesn’t help with the whole Avengers binge I was just on, damn you Tony Stark for being inspirational).

I keep in “weekly correspondence” with a friend I met at ISEF, a freshman in Pennsylvania who was part of my delegation. (sidenote: my week in Phoenix for ISEF was the longest time I’d ever been far from home alone. And I’m going to see Spider-Man Far From Home this Tuesday so that’s all convenient and tangential.) I tried once to keep a diary with the belief that habit is a decent motivator. When I started logging build updates for my projects I was more motivated to wake up and log some kind of work done. 

Inertia: a body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an equal and opposite force.

So my inertia is a lot of sleep and productivity in neglected hours. High school quite honestly burned me out, creatively and socially. I got the most done towards the end with self-imposed deadlines and freedom.

I graduated on June 13th, an early date this year, and spent a week being lazy and “recovering” so to speak. Technically, I spent the night before graduation panicking and assembling my graduation cap, which used one of those LED matrix panels to play gifs. I thought I fried the microcontroller by putting too much voltage through it (5V instead of 3V, but never again for that Teensy) but it was just that my code was bad. I will put up a video eventually on what it does and how I, an absolute novice, read through a lot of documentation and simplified things with some dumb understanding of where to plug in stuff. Future electrical/mechanical/whatever engineer in the making, folks! Always with the flashy end goal in sight, building the plane as I fly it.

I obviously wasn’t valedictorian or salutatorian or anything because I believed that a perfect GPA wasn’t as important as doing something beyond the classroom too. Yay for side projects. I balanced and made it out with only a few final B+’s (and some from junior year, but that was fine) and did something good and fun and novel. 

And then, one crazy night later, I spent a week sleeping until 4pm every day. Ah, the luxury. 

Figuring that this summer is my summer to catch up on all the movies and pop culture I missed during all these years I was busy studying, it’s now...

SUMMER OF NOSTALGIA

in which I decide to catch up on everything I missed, Captain America style.

First was getting a Nintendo Switch as a “sorry your friends abandoned you at the eleventh hours because they were jealous of you outdoing them in science competitions and college stuff” graduation gift. And Let’s Go Pikachu. I dumped a lot of hours into catching them all and I’m glad to have finally experienced a Pokemon game instead of just Pokemon Go on my phone.

Continuing on the Avengers thread, I rented movies from the library and watched all 22 movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the Endgame re-release just last Friday. So here’s my current rating: Link

Naturally, in my Tony Stark admiration I 3D printed an arc reactor nightlight the night before the Endgame rerelease, where I saw it for the first time. And shoved said arc reactor down my shirt for photos. I’m thinking it’s going to be neat dorm lighting and a last-minute Halloween costume. #ProofThatTonyStarkHasAHeart

love you 3000. ☆ aka 3D printing an arc reactor nightlight before going to the endgame rerelease to cry over iron man for three hours. I think we should all keep a little Tony Stark desire to innovate in ourselves.

On the less fun side of things, I’ve also been taking edX courses online to prepare for MIT’s Advanced Standing Exams (ASEs) to see if I can get some credit out of intro-level programming (6.0001) and biology (7.01x) classes after taking these exams during orientation. Still a good time sink and refresher of some things I haven’t seen since freshman year bio/sophomore year AP CompSci.

And now, it’s the night before I’m going to see Far From Home. Sure, I still need to clean up my room and pack for college and prep for being a space ambassador at the Apollo 50th celebrations in a few weeks (that’s a whole other explainer post), but for now I’m just being and enjoying. And that’s enough.

How am I going to change the world? Well, I’m just going to wait and see what hits me. For now, we chill, free of expectations.

MISCELLANEOUS VOLTORB HEADCANONS TIME!

* I’m not sure what I like better, the idea that voltorbs do have a mouth or the idea that they just absorb nutrients through their skin somehow? Like... maybe they have a very small mouth too small for humans to see, so they take little pinprick sized nibbles out of stuff! or maybe the seam between the red and white sections actually is their jaw, so they pop open on a hinge like a pokeball to eat stuff! And maybe electrode does that too and their humanoid mouth is actually just a camoflage pattern on their skin that they can move around like an LED projection!

* Oh, or maybe they’re like the opposite of some butterflies that lose their mouth when they come out of the cocoon and never eat anything cos they only live for a week or so in their adult stage. So maybe voltorbs never eat, and they can die if they don’t evolve before the end of a set time limit, unless humans intervene and put them on an intraveneous drip. (Which is a quite difficult and expensive operation cos you have to pierce this magical steel hide to get to the circulatory system) Or maybe its just that voltorbs only absorb electricity and dont require actual food until they grow to a certain size? And that means that voltorbs naturally evolve much earlier in the wild, because electricity is harder to find unless you live with humans. As soon as their body becomes impossible to sustain on voltage alone, they undergo the metamorphosis to grow a face and stomach and become a biological engine! So human-trained electrodes kinda have the advantage of starting off stronger cos they waited until they were already mature before evolving. But wild electrodes have the advantage of accessing their evolved power earlier, even if they’re lil bitesize euivelants. Plus sometimes just remaining voltorb-sized can be more practical for getting around certain environments, the massive human-trained electrodes are adapted for a comfortable life where they won’t need to do much hiding from predators.

* Oh and... yeah. Predators! I feel like maybe they’re vampirized by other electric types, since they’re pretty much like a sentient battery just sitting there up for grabs. Maybe particularly big stuff like Electavire could even crunch an entire voltorb in its jaws, and thats why it evolved to have more steel-ish elements to it, so it could pull this off? but for most electric mons they arent able to break voltorb’s hard shell, so they can just drain its power but not kill it. But if a voltorb is stuck unable to move its basically a slow death anyway... Possibly their most common enemy is Pikachu, cos they’re speedy while voltorbs are slow. And thats why they mimic pokeballs, cos pikachus dont like to be inside their ball. (Well, in anime canon at least)

* Maybe they have such a hyperactive self-destruct reflex because they’re so commonly eaten, then? Even when you capture a voltorb its still a very anxious critter who doesnt really realize its gonna be safe, and that pokemon battles arent life or death. So its heartwarming that fully-grown electrodes are known for their more chilled and happy demeanor! (Maybe the wild variant of the breed would keep voltorb’s angry face?) So they’re like real life exotic pets like snakes and scorpions, their easily-frightened nature is mistaken for deliberate malice by humans.

* Perhaps there are variants whose patterns reflect the different pokeball types, depending on which is more popular in different regions? Normal pokeballs are obviously the most common discarded ones in the majority of the world, but like in victory road you would find mostly ultra ball voltorbs.

* oh and I totally headcanon that voltorbs really ARE pokeballs that come to life! I think maybe they ‘breed’ asexually by nursing a nest of regular pokeballs that will hatch into new voltorbs. Basically they go around nuzzling broken pokeballs as if they’re poor injured children, and through the power of love they actually become that.  Like somehow they can pass fragments of their ‘life energy’ into new hosts? Theyre more like sentient electricity monsters that just wear the pokeballs as a shell to protect them. Maybe them and Rotom diverged from a single ancestor in the ancient past...? So the more rare pokeball variants dont occur in the wild, they’re selectrively bred by humans. Usually an electrode will make a nest from the same pokeball that it was born from as a voltorb, unless they cant find any. But deliberately depriving them of pokeballs and forcing them to imprint on a luxury ball or whatever is considered cruel, the parent gets incredibly stressed from the ordeal and may have trouble bonding with their newborn 'torbs. Personality: Outgoing and a bit mischievous, but overall a friendly person. Due to her past however, she has about given up on trying to make friends and typically would rather spend her free-time playing her handhelds than trying to engage with the other campers. She has a very hard time putting any deep amount of trust in people and even upon doing so will almost never consider them anything more than an ally. If confronted about her reliance on fictional persons for companionship, she’ll become very defensive and try to avoid the subject. If the issue is pressed further she occasionally will become quite angry, retorting that while the characters in her games may not be real, she knows that they’ll never reject her, more than she can say for real people. Still, these incidents are few and far between, leading the majority of people to think of her merely as a relaxed, if somewhat odd, person. She puts a large amount of effort into her psychic development and when not off on her own can often be found training with the counselors (and later on Cruller, after she accidentally discovered his sanctuary.)

Powers: While Mar can use several different normal powers (levitation and psychokinesis for example), she does possess two specific to herself: Electrokinesis and Telepathy. Her Electrokinesis, as the name implies, allows her to manifest and control electricity. Being the first power she had manifest, this is the one she has the most control over and is capable of several feats, including forming the electricity into intricate shapes and controlling it’s intensity and voltage at will. She’s also able to draw electricity out of the environment around her to power herself up and is able to create storms if enough energy is amassed. Her Telepathy is a bit less controlled. Currently she is only able to activate it in moments of intense emotion and must have skin to skin contact with the target for it to work. When in use though she is able to easily read any part of the targets mind, bypassing any form of mental barriers they may have in place including the effects of hypnosis and memory vaults. Unfortunately, as powerful as the ability is, she’s rarely able to control it and most of her times using it have been accidental. (Most notably being her accidentally delving into Bobby’s memories when she grabbed onto him in a panic during an attempt not to fall off a ledge in the forest.) Despite the large range of powers she’s able to use, certain abilities elude her, especially hydrokinesis. Most likely stemming from her subconscious aversion to water (due to her tendency to have electronics with her most of the time), she is unable to manipulate anything larger than a small ball of liquid, something that frustrates her to no end. Overuse of her powers (which she does like 90% of the time) can cause her eyes to become photosensitive, hence her small sunglasses.

Mental World: As expected with someone obsessed with video games, Mar’s mental world, known as the Gamerscape, is a sprawling labyrinth of rooms and hallways, all eventually leading to an outdoor plateau where Mar’s astral projection can typically be found.
