Pride and Prejudice
Classic and loose adaptions from 1940, 1967, 1980, 1995, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019
The second of Jane Austen’s novels, first published in 1813, is the most often adapted, inspiring various different takes on it. The ones pictures above are detailed below:
Pride and Prejudice (1940 Film)
This black and white film departs from the original novel in some (or should I say many?) points
Written by Aldous Huxley and Jane Murfin, adapted from the stage adaptation by Helen Jerome; directed by Robert Z. Leonard
Starring Greer Garson as Elizabeth Bennet, Laurence Olivier as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Edward Ashley Cooper as George Wickham, Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane Bennet, Bruce Lester as Mr. Charles Bingley, Ann Rutherford as Lydia Bennet, Melville Cooper as Mr. William Collins, among others.
Pride and Prejudice (1967 Miniseries)
6 episodes x 24min. Black and White footage Written by Nemone Lethbridge, directed by Joan Craft
Starring Celia Bannerman as Elizabeth Bennet, Lewis Fiander as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Richard Hampton as George Wickham, Polly Adams as Jane Bennet, David Savile as Mr. Charles Bingley, Lucy Fleming as Lydia Bennet, Julian Curry as Mr. William Collins, among others.

Pride and Prejudice (2005 Film)
Written by Deborah Moggach, directed by Joe Wright
Starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet, Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rupert Friend as George Wickham, Rosamund Pike as Jane Bennet, Simon Woods as Mr. Charles Bingley, Jena Malone as Lydia Bennet, Claudie Blakley as Charlotte Lucas, Tom Hollander as Mr. Collins, Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennet, Judi Dench as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, among others.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012–13 Webseries)

Created by Hank Green and Bernie Su, from Pemberley Digital
Starring Ashley Clements as Elizabeth Bennet, Daniel Vincent Gordh as William Darcy, Wes Aderhold as George Wickham, Laura Spencer as Jane Bennet, Christopher Sean as Bing Lee, Mary Kate Wiles as Lydia Bennet, Julia Cho as Charlotte Lu, Maxwell Glick as Ricky Collins, among others.
Lizzie’s videos amount to 100 episodes + 10 Q&A, but shorter series enrich the story by offering other characters’ perspectives, most notably Lydia’s (and also Georgiana’s). A playlist at Pemberley Digital’s Youtube channel features them all in order.
The series has also been adapted into a book, The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet (2014), and spawned a sequel novel, The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet (2015).
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016 Film)
Loose adaption inspired by the 2009 novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, which adds zombies to Austen’s original story. The movie makes alterations from the zombie book as well.
Written and directed by Burr Steers
Starring Lily James as Elizabeth Bennet, Sam Riley as Colonel Fitzwilliam Darcy, Jack Huston as George Wickham, Bella Heathcote as Jane Bennet, Douglas Booth as Mr. Charles Bingley, Ellie Bamber as Lydia Bennet, Matt Smith as Parson William Collins, among others.
Orgulho e Paixão (Pride and Passion) (2018 Telenovela)
Brazilian telenovela in Brazilian-Portuguese

The story takes inspiration from all 6 of Austen’s major novels (plus Lady Susan), but mostly from Pride and Prejudice. Others stars include Chandelly Braz as Mariana Benedito (Marianne Dashwood) and Anajú Dorigon as Cecília Benedito (Catherine Morland).
Features 100 episodes in the International cut. The telenovela has been broadcast in other countries and languages (such as Spanish) but as far as I know, not in English.
Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta (2019 TV Film)
Loose adaption set in modern Atlanta, USA. All-black cast. Written by Tracy McMillan, directed by Rhonda Baraka
Starring Tiffany Hines as Elizabeth Bennet, Juan Antonio as Will Darcy, Raney Branch as Jane Bennet, Brad James as Charles Bingley, Reginae Carter as Lydia Bennet, Carl Anthony Payne as Rev. Collins, among others.
*****
Personal favorites: 2005, then 1995. But also: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Orgulho e Paixão
I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while it’s been a while since I’ve seen Bride and Prejudice, it’s got Indian musical numbers so c’mon, one gotta watch it.
Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.
In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe that’s cause I’m a sucker for P&P.

NASA Advances Six Innovative Tech Concepts to New Phase, Including a Lunar Railway System
See on Scoop.it - Design, Science and Technology
NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts program (NIAC) has selected six visionary concept studies for additional funding and development. Each study has already completed the initial NIAC phase, showing their futuristic ideas – like a lunar railway system and fluid-based telescopes – may provide fresh perspectives and approaches as NASA explores the unknown in space.
The NIAC Phase II conceptual studies will receive up to $600,000 to continue working over the next two years to address key remaining technical and budget hurdles and pave their development path forward. When Phase II is complete, these studies could advance to the final NIAC phase, earning additional funding and development consideration toward becoming a future aerospace mission.
“These diverse, science fiction-like concepts represent a fantastic class of Phase II studies,” said John Nelson, NIAC program executive at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Our NIAC fellows never cease to amaze and inspire, and this class definitely gives NASA a lot to think about in terms of what’s possible in the future.”
The six concepts chosen for 2024 NIAC Phase II awards are:
Fluidic Telescope (FLUTE): Enabling the Next Generation of Large Space Observatories would create a large optical observatory in space using fluidic shaping of ionic liquids. These in-space observatories could potentially help investigate NASA’s highest priority astrophysics targets, including Earth-like exoplanets, first-generation stars, and young galaxies. The FLUTE study is led by Edward Balaban from NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley.
Pulsed Plasma Rocket: Shielded, Fast Transits for Humans to Mars is an innovative propulsion system that relies on using fission-generated packets of plasma for thrust. This innovative system could significantly reduce travel times between Earth and any destination in the solar system.  This study is led by Brianna Clements with Howe Industries in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Great Observatory for Long Wavelengths (GO-LoW) could change the way NASA conducts astronomy. This mega constellation low-frequency radio telescope uses thousands of autonomous SmallSats capable of measuring the magnetic fields emitted from exoplanets and the cosmic dark ages. GO-LoW is led by Mary Knapp with MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Radioisotope Thermoradiative Cell Power Generator is investigating new in-space power sources, potentially operating at higher efficiencies than NASA legacy power generators. This technology could enable small exploration and science spacecraft in the future that are unable to carry bulky solar or nuclear power systems. This power generation concept study is from Stephen Polly at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.
FLOAT: Flexible Levitation on a Track would be a lunar railway system, providing reliable, autonomous, and efficient payload transport on the Moon. This rail system could support daily operations of a sustainable lunar base as soon as the 2030s. Ethan Schaler leads FLOAT at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.
ScienceCraft for Outer Planet Exploration distributes Quantum Dot-based sensors throughout the surface of a solar sail, enabling it to become an innovative imager. Quantum physics would allow NASA to take scientific measurements through studying how the dots absorb light. By leveraging the solar sail’s area, it allows lighter, more cost-effective spacecraft to carry imagers across the solar system. ScienceCraft is led by NASA’s Mahmooda Sultana at the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate funds the NIAC program, as it is responsible for developing the agency’s new cross-cutting technologies and capabilities to achieve its current and future missions.

#FBF FLASHBACK FRIDAY – NEWS FROM YESTERYEAR
November 4, 1871 – #150YEARS AGO
Excerpt from Rockland County Journal
WOMEN’S ANECTODES OF WASHINGTON AND ANDRÉ
A WRITER IN Lippincott’s Magazine says:
Many years ago I made my first visit to Washington's headquarters at old Tappantown about half a mile from the “Seventy-Six House.” The ancient edifice was more than a hundred and twenty years old, and although built of stone seemed almost tottering to its fall. It had had four roofs, one on top of the other and from the first lower layer of cedar shingles, I selected powdering specimens, which pulled out easily and have them now among my revolutionary relics.
I entered with my friend, whose guest I was at the time, and who was a resident of the immediate neighborhood. We were courteously welcomed by its then occupants, two elderly ladies who were born in the house.
Nothing could be in more perfect keeping with the mansion than these two venerable women, their name was Ver Bruyck; and I was the more interested in them because I had recently become acquainted in New York with a relative of theirs of the same name, a promising young painter, who was fast increasing his reputation as a very natural artist, and a keen observer of the picturesque. One of his most admired sketches I soon saw was a most lifelike picture of this same old house.
One of the two ladies was over eighty years old, and her sister was seventy-five. They were very lively for persons so aged and were obligingly communicative.
“Did you ever see General Washington?” I inquired of the oldest old lady.
“Oh, yes ---many and many a time,” she answered, “in this very room. He often used to hold me in his lap. I remember it just as well as if it was but yesterday. He was a lovely man, General Washington was. And here,” she continued, going to, and opening a wide cupboard, “he used to keep his ‘things.’ These blue-and-white cheney cups and saucers he used to drink out of; and here's of the very bowl he used to make his wine sangaree into; and they used to pass it around from one officer to another, when they'd come to see him, and they'd help themselves. He seen a good deal of company, General Washington did.”
“Did you ever see Major André?” I asked.
“Oh, yes, more’n fifty times. He was a beautiful man. He kissed me twice. I was a little girl then. I seen him the very morning they took him in onto the top of the hill to hang him. The day before in the morning, I took him up some handsome ripe peaches. He thanked me so kind, and broke one of them open and put it to his mouth and tasted of it. But somehow or another, he didn't seem to have no appetite.”
I asked how General Washington seemed to feel on the occasion.
“Oh, he must have felt dreadful! He walked back’ards and for’ards all the morning in this very room; and I've heard Pop Blauvelt say that he never seen him feel so bad afore. He kept looking at his watch every now and then and was on oneeasy [sic] until the time had come, and Major André was hung. I seen the major myself when he was a-swinging in the air; and I seen him when he was dug up and took away. So did you Polly, too, didn't you?”

Tysm for the list! I was wondering, would you mind doing the same for Frances? :)
Thank YOU for sending me asks. It feels like I have more of a purpose than just randomly posting when I’m actually helping people. I’ve found out quite a bit about Frances lately so hopefully I can help you.
Her name was Frances Eleanor Laurens. Eleanor comes from her paternal grandmother Eleanor Delamere Ball Laurens. There’s no one called Frances in either the Laurens or Manning families. It does mean ‘free one’ though.
She was often called Fanny as a nickname
She was born in January 1777 to Martha Manning Laurens and John Laurens
She was born with a swollen thigh and hip which her grandfather said was due to the carelessness of the nurse who delivered her.
She lived with her mother Martha in Chelsea, London at the beginning of her life
Baptised at Saint Andrew Undershaft, London on St Mary Axe.
On the 28th January 1777 John Baker visited Martha and Frances.
On the 29th November 1780 Martha took Frances to meet her grandfather Henry Laurens in the Tower of London
27th August 1782: Her father John Laurens died leaving her orphaned age 5.
Between when Martha (her mother) died and when she was adopted by Martha Laurens (her aunt) I’m not sure who looked after her. It could’ve been her grandfather William Manning.
Around 1784, when she was 7, she lived in Bath with Martha Laurens (her aunt), her 14 year old aunt Polly (aka Mary) and her great aunt Mary.
Also around this time is when Henry Laurens began a long process to get Frances the money that John had earned from being a soldier.
11th May 1785: Laurens women arrive in Charleston
Martha (aunt) acts as Frances’s mother and educates her using Benjamin Rush’s Thoughts Upon Female Education.
1792: Henry Laurens died. Left his plantation at Long Canes in Ninety-Six District to a 15 year old Frances.
1795: 18 year old Frances marries Francis Henderson at St Clement Danes Church in London, England which is really close to Chancery Lane and Middle Temple.
According to familyseach.org Francis Henderson Jr was baptised in 1797 so he would have to have been born then but according to Greg Massey and this source ‘Reminiscences of Abbeville’ in the Abbeville Press and Banner, 19 April 1876 he was born in 1800.
Francis Henderson Jr (John Laurens’s grandson) was baptised at St Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone Road, London, England
1801: Frances and Francis Sr separated. Francis Sr got custody of their son.
Francis Sr went to America, Francis Jr was sent to Scotland and believed that his mother had died. Francis Sr seemed to only really care about getting the money that was owed to Frances and their heirs of John Laurens.
The Hendersons (not Frances) kept petitioning to Congress to release the money. But Frances wasn’t there so Congress refused.
In 1832 after many unsuccessful attempts the Hendersons and Frances managed to get the money that was owed to John Laurens.
14th July 1832: John Laurens’s heirs received $7335.86.
1847: Francis Jr died
10 Jun 1853: Married James Cunnington when she was 76 at  Saint Botolph Without Aldersgate
Described as: ‘ the beautiful, accomplished and wealthy Miss Laurens, of Charleston, S.C ‘

The finished All Faiths Chapel: Top floor is living space for Pastor Clements (I don’t know where bethesda had him actually living), ground floor is the chapel and a small kitchen area with a fold down table that can be closed off by a curtain. Backyard has a small garden. I headcanon that he is an avid gardener, makes soap and sometimes candles with the herbs that he grows, and is friends with his neighbor, Polly.

Dear somebody,
Paris, 2019.10.06
When are you reading this? Who are you?
I’m a lonely person in the most beautiful city of the world. The history of Paris spans centuries, though it only became this big and urban in the 20th century. Paris is a collection of villages that were frankensteined into an haussmanian marvel of paved streets and dainty, low rooftops. It’s like the baby reached its prime. Hopefully it might last a bit more—but we know that greater civilizations crumbled to dust millenia past, and I sincerely doubt our current world will be perennial (even without the mention of climate change etc.)
My history feels comparatively short and uneventful. I was born from a French man and an immigrant woman, who made the mistake of making a baby and marrying (in that order, but it was a mistake regardless of order). Their marriage was short-lived, and only recently did I gain a fuller picture of what their life together was like. I do not have memories before my 3rd or 4th year on earth, when I spent 10 months in my mother’s home country. I remember my 5th birthday, during which I cried because I lost a game of musical chairs against 2 other kids; it was in London, I remember the (literal) icing on the cake, and the star-shaped Polly Pocket pendant I was gifted. I noted fairly quickly that I cried during every one of my birthdays, and not of joy. I haven’t entirely lost hope of having one good birthday, but I’m drawing on 30 now and people don’t celebrate your birthday at this age unless you feed them.
Paris has seen almost all my years, and despite that I know it very little. Needless to say there’s probably too much to this city to get to know in a lifetime, but I’m not even there. It’s like we brushed past each other, catching only a glimpse of the color of our apparel, a whiff of our scents—and are too soon forgotten.
I might never have the time or inclination to deepen our bond. External circumstances may bring it to its knees before my own time is up. But just the other day a friend acquiesced in understanding when I said I had reduced my world, out of necessity, for survival. Curiosity and wanderlust bring their own share of desperation, as the endless possibilities and the boundless realm of the unseen taunt the spirit, and drill into the soul the sort of void that no air or light can reach. Most of all, the sensation of not belonging is suffocating. I’ve been given beauty beyond compare, too many options for a single human being, the finest foods within arm’s reach—yet always felt a stranger to it all. And worse, I grew up not knowing where to place myself. Do I belong here? or somewhere else? Do I need to search this place? another place? within me? In what way do I matter?
It is reasonable to say that we don’t matter, but also reasonable to advocate the idea that life has meaning; otherwise nobody would function, right? The mind needs its myths, right? The myth of Reason being the cure-all for human evils is completely bogus however, and I would argue it’s dangerous. It’s another half-baked idea that entirely dismisses the hugest part of human psyche: our emotions, and our irrationality. This myth is dangerous because it tells us we have control: over our choices, our surroundings, that we only need education to see farther and better and clearer. It’s shaped our politics and the way we chide each other. It’s burdened every human under this law with the responsibility of all-encompassing knowledge. “Ignorance of the law is no excuse” is a delicious example of it, though in French it better reads “No one is supposed to be ignorant of the law” (which does introduce its casually distinct bit of nuance, if I may pedantically say so, but would only develop upon explicit request). We’re expected to know, we’re expected to understand and follow. And so we’ve prescribed our entire lives under the diktat of Reason, refused to acknowledge stupidity and ignorance as the norm, painfully struggling against the human condition... and for what?
I don’t know when you are nor where, but from where I stand I’m still one of the lucky ones. Reason was used to the profit of this side mostly, rationally creating unreasonable expectations and desires to be met by rationally-engineered unreasonable pseudo-solutions, all for the sake of our irrational drive to a more comfortable life—because our brains are wired like this and we are entirely subject to our biology. (yes I would argue that morality is only relevant once considered in the framework of subjugation to biological impulses.) And this has begun to lay ruin to our planet; and we’re not stopping; because reasons; because we’re shortsighted and biologically wired like that. I won’t be the first to experience the downfall, it’s actually already begun in less clement parts of the planet. But it will come, and hence I wonder: why try to find a place in here? Why make or build anything?
I’ll close this letter with this interrogation in suspension. Here is the world, here I am. I still enjoy the taste of fresh meat and greens, photos of fine jewellery, and the old ironwork inlaid in buildings and streets. These halcyon days will end, and hopefully I get to enjoy them—though beyond the dusk there might be something for me as well. For us.

VtM:WW(W) - The Introduction & Overview Pt. 2
“what the fuck are you talking about?” - start here. it’s my vampire campaign (vampaign)
taly potent my horrible wife dont you read any more of these after this
A quick recap:
Pierce Clements is the Tremere Prince.
Mona Iglesias is the Ventrue Primogen.
Everyone hates Ambrose.
The old coterie consisted of Humphrey Harvey Hampshire, Trevor Ygghain, and Val Diaz
VtM:WWW starts with a mass Embrace, as all good things tend to start with. The mass Embrace was also found by the Scourges, and quickly devolved into a Frenzying mass of horseshit because the Malkavian thought it would be a good idea to Dementate everyone.
There are only three survivors, brought by the Scourges to present to the Prince (and Sheriff). Typically Camarilla policy would be to have them executed, since they're practically shovelheare, but Mona has always been a bleeding heart and convinces Clements to give them a chance, provided she could find adoptive sires for them.
So she does! The three she find are:
Evelyn Caillat, the Representative (not Primogen) of Clan Lasombra. (she/her)
Valentin Aubermont, Primogen of Clan Malkavian. (he/him)
And Jesse Cowen, her childe and Scourge, name not bolded because he doesn't come up again. (they/he)
Evelyn does this because she wants to prove herself as someone who has powerful childer and what would be better than a shovelhead reformation project? Aubermont does this because he's piloted by spite. Jesse does this because. Actually they don't do it. They get mad and walk out since they have sire issues. Oops 😬
But that's fine! Clements makes a phone call to the only person he can think of, his sire. That won't end poorly.
These are the shovelheads:
Polly Marie, a City Gangrel who has already presented as such. (they/them)
Max Forrester, whose Clan has not yet manifested. (he/him)
And Mahdi Ochre, whose left eye has turned blue, but nothing else has shown up. (he/him)
Evelyn gleefully takes Max as her own. Aubermont takes one look at Mahdi's piercings and goes Oh Yes (malicious, spiteful). And Jesse sees Polly and leaves.
So the two sires and their not-childer leave and go their separate ways. At this point in time, I think the players believe Evelyn is Toreador and Aubermont is Ventrue. Aubermont gives his first speech about shit, and he talks about how appearances can always be deceiving, that everyone's a lying sunnovabitch, and that you shouldn't trust anyone in this city because they're all rotten. Evelyn is pampering Max rotten.
Polly, meanwhile, gets taken in by Clements's sire. He is a little boy named Edward Bishop, and while he is also a child, he is also six hundred years old and the childe of Karl Schrekt. Polly makes fun of him being a little boy and Bishop nearly beats their ass on the spot.
Evelyn gloats for a bit.
Mahdi is given an apartment that is cluttered and messy and horrible. There's a tin of yogurt in this fridge that's been expired for ten years. Mahdi's player is convinced that the yogurt is a clue, and she overanalyzes it and runs, like, a Perception/Occult check on the thing. It's just yogurt.
Polly is taken to the chantry and they are treated as Tremere, despite everything.
Night zero ends.
