The Great Ocean Road was constructed by returned servicemen between 1919 and 1932 as a memorial to their fallen comrades who gave the ultimate sacrifice in WWI. This opened up the coastline which previously was only accessible by sea or rough bush track, giving Streeton the opportunity to paint this work.

THE GREAT OCEAN WALK: A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE

One of Victoria’s greatest walking tracks is the Great Ocean Walk. As it wraps around the coastline of the Southern Ocean, it gives those walking along it the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in this monumental location’s landscape, wildlife, and history. From sweeping ocean views to hidden rainforests, there is something for everyone.

For local and international visitors planning to travel along the Great Ocean Walk, many things are worth knowing before you set off. We have compiled a guide that will give you an insight into the location, what you can expect throughout your journey, and the important considerations to make as you plan.

The walk begins in Apollo Bay, a town in southwestern Victoria. Apollo Bay is a stop on the Great Ocean Road that winds along the coast, passing through the Great Otway National Park. Behind Apollo Bay are the mountains of Otway Ranges, partly forested and cleared for grazing and dairying. When you reach Apollo Bay, keep your eyes peeled for Apollo Bay Visitor Centre, as this will serve as the starting point for your journey.

Arrange your transportation from the end of your walk, Port Campbell, back to Apollo Bay (or where you have chosen to park your car). Shuttle services and public transport are available; we suggest organising your preferred transportation option before setting off.

The Great Ocean Walk is often travelled across eight days, allowing travellers to slow down and appreciate the sounds and sights at a gentle pace. There are also daily and multi-day trip options for covering the entire distance in a shorter timeframe.

Camping and lodge accommodations are available for those covering the distance over several days. Seven camping sites have been designed to be reached at the end of a daily hike, approximately ten to sixteen kilometres apart. To secure a camping spot or lodge, check availability ahead of time and book your accommodation.

The majestic locations available as you traverse the Great Ocean Walk can be separated into eight sections:

One: Apollo Bay to Elliot Ridge

Two: Elliot Ridge to Blanket Bay

Three: Blanket Bay to Cape Otway

Four: Cape Otway to Aire River

Five: Aire River to Johanna Beach

Six: Johanna Beach to Ryan’s Den

Seven: Ryan’s Den to Devils Kitchen

Eight: Devils Kitchen to Twelve Apostles

The Great Ocean Walk’s sections are classified as a ‘Grade 3’ hike. This classification was given as it is ‘suitable for most ages and fitness levels’ though some experience in bushwalking is recommended. Some steep staircases and gradients are presented throughout the walk—challenging terrain and areas that require a distance to be covered along the beach. Hikers should remain vigilant of the path as it can be wet and slippery in different areas or due to changing weather conditions.

One of the best ways to ensure a smooth and engaging experience on the Great Ocean Walk is by completing the trail with a licenced tour guide. When partnering with a tour company, of which there are over twenty locally, you have access to several services depending on your expected duration and personal needs. From transportation, guided tours, camping and safety equipment hire, supplying food, and more.

If you are walking the Great Ocean Road Walk, whether in a group or independently, we recommend that you take some safety precautions:

There is limited phone reception along the walk, so ensure you mark the last location with reception to walk back to if you need to make an emergency call. We also advise being familiar with the emergency contact numbers 000 and 112.

Consider bringing a personal locator beacon or satellite radio to keep those waiting for you updated on your location or for emergencies.

It is essential to pack a First Aid kit or, where possible, travel with someone who is First Aid certified.

Be vigilant of snakes, especially in the warmer months. Keep your distance and make a wide berth if you come across one. Precautions include keeping your tent and belongings off the ground and secure, checking the area before sitting down, wearing hiking boots, gators, and pants, and more. Bushfires are a serious risk, and the Great Ocean Walk is a high-risk area, especially during the summer. We recommend checking the fire rating for the days you intend to be walking and being familiar with bushfire safety, which you can read more about through the Visit Victoria website.

Many beaches along the trail experience rogue waves and tide changes. Wreck Beach, in particular, is a high-risk area. Keep a minimum ten-metre distance from the water. We also recommend checking the tide timetable. Only travel down to the beach if it is low tide and safe, and remain aware of quickly changing conditions.

We’re all familiar with the Great Wall of China. And some of you may have heard of the Great Hedge in India, used by the British to control the salt trade. Well, now another type of barrier – in Arizona – may go down in the history books. Decrying an “invasion” from Mexico, outgoing Governor Doug Ducey has tried to contain it with – well – containers.

Using 9’ by 40’, 8800-pound shipping containers owned by the state, Ducey has been plugging holes in Donald Trump’s notorious border wall.

The containers are topped with razor wire and currently stretch for some 3 miles. Ducey had started around Yuma, but now has plans to spend $95 million adding another 10 miles – likely a complete waste of money, considering that incoming governor Katie Hobbs has promised to remove the ad hoc barrier.

Ducey is also almost certainly trespassing on federal land.

“There’s just no question that this is federal property,” Dinah Bear, formerly with the White House Council on Environmental Quality, told The Guardian. “There’s no legal difference between the land they’re putting the shipping containers on and Grand Canyon national park.”

Ducey filed a lawsuit in October disputing this fact, which is now before Judge David Campbell. The U.S. Forest Service is looking for a court order to avoid any conflict with local authorities.

In addition to the U.S. government, the Cocopah Indian Tribe has also spoken out against Ducey’s wall, saying that some of it encroaches upon their reservation.

And there’s been criticism from scientists as well: the Center for Biological Diversity has noted that the containers hurt certain migratory species that typically cross over the area.

Of course, keeping out migrating animals and keeping out humans are two entirely different balls of wax. Generally, such obstacles don’t pose much of a challenge to human crossers, especially since they can be extraordinarily difficult to guard.

Also worth noting is the fact that – despite Republican claims to the contrary – the overwhelming majority of illegal drugs that come over the border – more than 90% – come through legal points of entry and through the mail.

Fentanyl isn’t being carried by undocumented workers trying to sneak into the country; it’s going through the ports of California and being delivered by the USPS.

Ducey is probably just trying to stand out in a field of Republican hardliners (some might say “assholes” is a more apt description).

There’s Greg Abbott of Texas, who has been shipping out migrants by bus. And Ron DeSantis, who is so intent on being an asshole that he literally goes to other states to find undocumented workers to abuse.

Douchey (whoops! – meant Ducey) is competing against them and perhaps trying to distinguish himself, even if it means wasting tens of millions of dollars of taxpayer money on an eyesore that won’t do anything to change the situation.

ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR CAMBELL BAY

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an archipelago located in the Bay of Bengal, are an enchanting part of India's territory. Among these islands lies the relatively lesser-known gem—Campbell Bay. study abroad diaries 〜メルボルン編〜

みなさん、はじめまして！/こんにちは！/久しぶり！ WIC66期の飯田祐月です。

WICでは、内務/広報/スピコンのサブを務めていました！（懐かしい）今回のブログでは、自分の留学先であるオーストラリア・メルボルンについて紹介しています！「66期なんていつの時代だよ」と思われるかもしれませんが、頑張って書いたので、ぜひ最後まで読んでいって下さい！それではどうぞ〜~

まずは基本情報から。メルボルンは、シドニーに次ぐ第二の大都市です。日本で例えると、シドニー＝東京、メルボルン＝大阪、みたいな感じ（らしい）。メルボルンの *CBDエリア (Central Business District) には、多くのオフィスビルが建っていて、普段からとても活気が感じられます。その一方で、ビクトリア州立図書館や *フリンダース駅といった由緒ある建物も少なからずあり、まさに歴史ある大都市です。

ところで、みなさんは『オーストラリア』と言われた時に、どのような『人』のイメージが浮かぶでしょうか。「ブロンドヘアで、目が青くて、背が高くて…etc」もちろん、そのイメージは間違っていません！ですが、オーストラリアという国は、移民政策に積極的であったり、留学先として人気であるということから、そうではない人もたくさんいます！中国、韓国、インドネシア、ベトナム、タイ、マレーシア、シンガポール、インド、スリランカ、イラン、ケニア、ブラジル、チリ、フランス、ドイツなど、世界中から多くの人が集まっています。また、オーストラリアで生まれ育ったアジア系・アフリカ系の人も少なくはなく、上のようなバイアスをもたないで生活することがとても大事になります！特に、先ほど触れたメルボルンCBDにはとても多くのアジア人が暮らしています。

続いては、「メルボルンの朝/昼/夜」というテーマに沿って、さらに詳しくメルボルンを紹介していきます！

メルボルンの朝といえば、「カフェ」です。メルボルンには独自のカフェ文化が浸透しています。日本と違って、ローカルなカフェが大多数を占めているため、みなさんが愛してやまない、緑色のロゴで有名なあのカフェはとても少ないです。僕は、（朝起きることが出来て、時間があったら）コーヒーを飲むので、おしゃれなカフェの多いメルボルンでの生活がとても好きです。ここに、個人的におすすめなカフェの写真を貼っておきます！

もうひとつメルボルンのカフェ文化について好きなポイントがあります。それは、オーダーする時に自分の名前を伝え、自分のドリンクが完成すると、店員さんが自分の名前を呼び知らせてくれるというところです。（テイクアウェイする時）これは、アメリカなどの国でも同じだと思いますが、日本ではあまり馴染みのないことだったので、個人的には新鮮で、またフレンドリーさを感じることができるのでとても気に入っています。実際、自分が名前を伝えた際に、日本人だと気づいてくれ、そこから会話が弾んだことが何度もあります。ただ、自分の名前「Yuzuki」は聞き取りづらい＆馴染みのない名前であるた「Yusuki/Suzuki/Yusuke…」など、惜しい名前で呼ばれることも多いです笑

お昼は、大学にもっとも人が集まる時間帯ですよね。続いては、メルボルンでの大学生活について紹介していきます。僕は、現在モナシュ大学という大学に留学しています。この大学は、メルボルンに４つのキャンパスを持つ他、マレーシア・イタリア・南アフリカなどオーストラリア外にもキャンパスをもつ、とても大規模な総合大学です。留学生比率も約40％と、他の大学にも比べ高くなっています。メインのキャンパスは、メルボルンCBDから電車とバスで約1時間離れたクレイトンという街に位置しています。広大なキャンパスには、*特徴的な建物が数多くあり、何度見ても飽きません笑

モナシュ大学では、２セメスター制がとられており、セメスター１は2月から6月まで、セメスター２は7月から11月までとなっており、セメスター１と２の間には中〜長期の休みがあります。この休みの間に、母国へ帰国をしたり、シドニー・ゴールドコースト・アデレード・タスマニアといったオーストラリア国内の他の都市へ旅行にいく留学生がとても多いです。セメスター期間は、多くの学生が４つの授業をとっており、それぞれの授業についてLectureとTutorialがあります。(週８コマのイメージ。) Lectureは大きな教室で教授が50人↑の学生に対して授業を行うというもので、Tutorialは、20人↓の学生に対してTutorが1人つき、Lectureへの理解を深めるために行われます。ちなみに僕は、Introductory Econometrics, Corporate Finance, Introduction to data analysis, Commercial banking and finance という授業を履修しています。

夜になりました。ここでは、“メルボルン×ナイトライフ×満喫する方法”という切り口で話を進めていきたいと思います。メルボルンのナイトライフを満喫する上でおすすめなのが「ナイトクラブ」です。（*あくまで個人の意見です）ナイトクラブと聞くと身構えてしまう人が多いかもしれませんが、自分自身、危険な経験をしたことは一切なく、むしろ、ナイトクラブを通じてたくさんの友達が出来ました笑

メルボルンのクラブについて少し説明をさせて下さい。メルボルンには、いくつかのタイプのクラブがあります。アジアンクラブ、ホワイトクラブやゲイクラブなどで、タイプによって客層が変わります。入場料は大体$30AUD-$40AUD(￥2700-¥3600)で、「ゲストリスト」を持っているとそこから、$5-10割引されます。「ゲストリスト」とは、「プロモーター」と呼ばれる、各クラブのプロモーションをSNS上で行う人がもつ、特別割引のようなものです。（クラブの入り口で、プロモーターの名前を口頭で伝えると、割引を受けることができます）また、プロモーターには、集客1人につき$5-10の報酬が支払われます。つまり、プロモーターと来場者には互恵関係があります。流れている音楽はクラブやその日のDJによって異なりますが、人気の洋楽、K-popやEDMが流れていることが多いように感じます。DJが毎週のように変わるクラブもあり、人気のDJがやってくる日にはとても混雑します。

これ以上ナイトクラブについて書くと、「メルボルン＝ナイトクラブの街」といった誤ったイメージや「メルボルン留学について知りたかったのに、ナイトクラブの情報しかない」といった感想をもらいかねないので、この辺にしておきます。長々と失礼しました。気になる方は直接聞いてください笑

メルボルンへ留学に来たら、「メルボルン内で旅行をしてみたい！」という方も多いと思います。そこで、最後に、自分が実際に行った場所を紹介して、このブログを終わりにしたいと思います。ちなみに、オーストラリアは右ハンドル右側通行なので、国際免許があれば普通に運転できます。（交通ルールは少し違うので注意！）

１. モーニントン半島

大学の友人たちと車3台で行きました。 モーニントン半島は、メルボルンCBDから南の方角へ車で約１時間３０分ほどのところに位置しています。Mornington Peninsula Hot Spring という屋外温泉施設があります。僕は、真冬にいったのですが、気温の割に水温が低く、とても寒かったです笑　また、施設内にいくつかある温泉が離れており、凍えながら移動した記憶があります。やはり、温泉に関しては、日本が一番ですね〜

２. グレートオーシャンロード

メルボルンのCBDからへ時間運転すると、グレートオーシャンロードと呼ばれる、海沿いのとても長い道路にたどり着きます。車内から見る景色は圧巻です。グレートオーシャンロードの近くには*Great Ocean Road Wildlife Park や *Port Campbell National Parkがあり、前者ではカンガルーと触れ合うことができ、後者では圧巻の眺めを楽しむことが出来ます！

３. ヤラバレー

母と母の友人がメルボルンに来た際に行きました。素敵なエアビに泊まることができ、さらに優しい現地の方のおかげで、50匹以上のカンガルーを見ることができました！（カンガルーを見すぎると普通に飽きます。）

周辺にはたくさんの ワイナリーがあり、ワインのテイスティングをすることが出来ます。ちなみに、僕は運転をする必要があったため、ワイナリーで、アイスラテやコーラを飲みました。（親孝行は、こういうもの。）

テイスティングをしたい人は、バスツアーを申し込むのが良いと思います笑
