Enkidu becomes ill and curses the great door he fashioned for the temple of Enlil. He also curses the trapper and Shamhat for removing him from the wild. The sun God Shamash reminds Enkidu of how Shamhat fed and clothed him and introduced him to Gilgamesh and that Gilgamesh will bestow great honours on Enkidu at his funeral before wandering into the wild consumed by grief. Regretting his curses Enkidu blesses Shamhat lamenting that he will not die a heroic death and passes away. Gilgamesh performs a great funeral service for Enkidu with great honors and expenses and feasts and prayers to appease the Gods of the netherworld. Gilgamesh then climbs the twin peaks of Mashu of the rising and setting sun and demands entrance to the underworld from its Girtablilu (scorpion-human archers) guardians because he seeks to know why all men must die, they refuse him entrance and after much traveling he meets the Goddess Siduri who tells him of an immortal being that survived the great flood. Gilgamesh meets with a ferryman who agrees to take him to the isleof the Gods to meet the immortal, however Gilgamesh breaks the mast of the boat and is forced to act as mast in order to make the journey. On the sacred isle Gilgamesh meets Atrahasis who is immortal and questions him about death, Atrahasis tells him that all things must pass and hands him a herb that restores youth. Gilgamesh returns to land and bathes in a pool leaving the herb on the side of the water where a snake steals it shedding its skin in rejuvination on its way. Upset Gilgamesh returns to Uruk to live out the rest of his life, he is said to have ruled for 126 years and was buried under a riverbed alongside Enkidu.

Saman-ana: A legendary hero slain by the warrior God Ninurta.

Shamhat: Shamhat was a hierodule (sacred temple prostitute) who was instrumental in taming and civilising Enkidu. Shamhat also plays a part in the slaying of Humbaba in some versions of the story and helps ease Enkidu into acceptance of his own death.
