(NOTE if you haven’t read We Were Liars, this playlist contains spoilers.)
https://open.spotify.com/user/daniellek86/playlist/2CcTasmZ6qyN6RmwvIp9IN
- Secret by The Pierces - “Got a secret/ Can you keep it/ Well this one I’ll save/ Better lock it/ In your pocket/ Taking this one to the grave...” - Cadence and her friends have got some secrets...  Also We Were Pretty Little Liars #mashup.
- Island in the Sun by Weezer - “On an island in the sun/ we'll be playing and having fun/ and it makes me feel so fine/ I can't control my brain” - BECAUSE SHE SEES GHOSTS
- White Lies by Milo Greene - “It seems wrong to give up on/ What we’ve done/ You’ve wasted/ What could have been/ Things will never change ” - From the other liars to Cadence
- We Didn’t Start the Fire by Billy Joel - “We didn’t start the fire” - the Liars trying to get out of the blame of the house fire
- Love the Way You Lie by Eminem and Rihanna - “Just gonna stand there and watch me burn” - RIP Liars

The Winner's Curse playlist: FYALAWest & CLTFYA
Spotify link: https://open.spotify.com/user/1215945652/playlist/1zn8Ck8lvF12G0llDMIr7k
Faint - Linkin Park
The Herroni rebellion would not be ignored. -EAO
Stolen Dance - Milky Dance
Kestrel & Arin would have liked a stolen dance, but they couldn't talk about it. -EAO
Hero - Regina Spektor
Kestrel’s independent spirit and desire to live on her own terms and not submit to the confining standards set by her family is perfectly expressed by this song. You can see this when Spektor sings, “I’m the hero of this story. Don’t need to be saved.” This is perfectly followed by the melancholy ending of the song, much like the melancholy ending of the book - repeatedly singing to herself over and over, “It’s alright, it’s alright.” Between the lyrics and the piano, this song screams Kestrel in Winner’s Curse. - MS
We Float - PJ Harvey
This PJ Harvey song is both a rebel song and a love song, doomed and hopeful at the same time. So it's very appropriate for our main characters in their slow orbit of each other in Winner's Curse. You don’t get the sense in book one whether or not Kestrel and Arin will ever get together, they sadly may end up floating around each other forever if they can’t break free of all the rules. - MS
Stay - Rhianna
This song seems to fit the less than ideal romance between Arin & Kestrel. -EAO
The Arabian Dance “Coffee” - The Nutcracker Suite - Tchaikovsky
I imagine that while Kestrel is coming up with the battle plans, something with a gentle march quality would fit well. This also displays the grace of her plans and not the brutality with which they will be carried out. - MC
Skull and Crossbones - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl soundtrack
I imagine Kestrel and Irex having a large orchestral number behind their duel. - MC
Walk the Plank - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl soundtrack
As Kestrel is going to the fight, it is very much like walking the plank to her demise. The chaos of the music reminds me of the fact that she is walking into an inhospitable area where people are gossiping about her. - MC
I Don’t Need a Man - Pussycat Dolls
Kestrel makes it clear that she is independent and does not need to be married and taken care of. - MC
I’m a Slave for You - Britney Spears
Kestrel and Arin meet at a slave market. He works hard in his position, but in the end, is she a slave to her feelings? - MC

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl Playlist
from FYAVANWA and COMOFYA
This playlist is inspired by Greg and Earl’s films
Earl, the Wrath of God II – Die Eier von Satan, Tool The lyrics are a recipe for hash cookies, in German; like Earl and Greg’s movie, sounds great in German, but not a lot of meaning.
Ran II – The Emperor’s New Clothes, Elton John Earl and Greg’s movie is a plot-heavy tale of emperors.
Apocalypse Later – Countdown’s Begun, Ozzy Osbourne When is the apocalypse? According to Ozzy, the countdown’s begun.
Star Peaces – Back in Time, Huey Lewis and the News The description of Earl and Greg’s movie reminded me a little of Back to the Future, hence the Huey Lewis track
Hello, Good-Die – Nobody Does it Better, Carly Simon A classic Bond song.
Cat-ablanca – Ballad of Daykitty, Lou Barlow ”The thing is, cats can’t act.”
2002 – Shine on You Crazy Diamond, Pink Floyd ”2001 taught us that a film doesn’t even need a plot in the first place, and a lot of its scenes can just be weird colors.” Any psychedelic film needs a good 20 minute Pink Floyd song.
Manchurian Cat-idate – Stray Cat Strut, Stray Cats “Not only can cats not act, they also hate wearing clothes.”
Walk Lola Walk – Walking After Midnight, Patsy Cline Walking.
Rachel the Film – We Didn’t Start the Fire, Billy Joel A huge mess of a song that tries to cram everything in it, much like Rachel the Film.

I’ll Give You a Playlist
Based on I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
Here Comes the Sun - Beatles
Great overall theme song for the book, as it has “sun” in the title and it’s about moving on after a hardship. I think this line in particular applies to Jude’s transition throughout the book “The smiles returning to the faces/ Little darling/ It seems like years since it's been here”.
   2. It Don’t Have to Change - John Legend
For Jude and Noah, about family love persevering through life changes. “Oh do you remember/ when the family was everything?/ oh do you remember?/ It was so long ago and so much has changed/ I wanna go back/ wanna go back to those simple days/ I wanna go back/ but now we’ve grown and gone our separate ways/ Times is hard/ And things are a changin'/ I pray to God/ That we can remain the same/ All I'm trying to say is our love don't have to change”
  3. Hey Jude - the Beatles
Too obvious? : )
  4.  The Feeling- Alabama Shakes
For Noah who is struggling to come to terms with his feelings and accepting his actions towards Jude. Jude’s gradual acceptance of the past also applies to this song.  “See, I’ve been having a real hard time/ but it feels so nice to know I’m gonna be alright”
  5. Superstition- Stevie Wonder
A reference to Jude’s devotion to Grandma Sweetwine’s “bible”.
  6.  Brave - Sara Barelles
Jude and Noah are both struggling to find and be true to themselves after their mother’s death. This song is about being okay with who you are and facing the critics.  “You can be an outcast/ or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love/ or you can start speaking up”
 7. We Are Family- Sister Sledge
This book is full of family. Jude and Noah dealing with their sibling rivalry. Noah and his Dad discovering their relationship. All three of them discovering what it means to be a family again without their Mom in the picture.
8. The Middle- Jimmy Eat World
Both Jude and Noah feel out of place during the course of the book. This song fits in perfectly with their struggle with self acceptance.  “It just takes some time/ little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride/ everything, everything will be just fine/ everything everything will be alright.”
9. Vincent (Starry Starry Night)- Don McLean
This is the perfect love song to describe the love affair between Guillermo Garcia and Jude and Noah’s mother. “But now I understand why you tried to say to me, and how you suffered for your sanity” also described how both Jude and Noah feel after their mother dies.
10. Who Loves the Sun- Velvet Underground
Before their split, and their mother’s death, the twins both swapped pieces of the Earth. But after their mother dies, niether one of them cares who has the sun. “Who loves the sun, Who cares that it makes the plants grow, Who cares what it does, Since you broke my heart.” Both Jude and Noah have their heart broken in so many ways this song is perfect.

Say Hello to Your Friends: An 80s/90′s mix inspired by The Baby Sitters Club and presented through a glorious union between ATLFYA and PGHFYA.  Enjoy!
1. Hot for Teacher by Van Halen Remember those three minutes when Stacey was in love with Wesley Ellenburg the sexy student substitute?  The "Hot For Teacher" cassette single would have been a perfect soundtrack for writing her poorly-conceived poems to him (Stacey is incredibly sophisticated beyond her years and therefore would have known about things like Van Halen). ~ATLFYA
2. Take On Me by A-Ha Mrs. Barrett's plea for Dawn to please watch her three children as she shies away from her own responsibilities as a parent. Dawn, take ooooonnnn meeeee. (Book #5: Dawn and the Impossible Three). ~PGHFYA
3. Stay (I Missed You) by Lisa Loeb  Mary Anne broke up with Logan 4 books ago (which in Babysitters World is about half an hour), but she misses him SO BADLY guys.  This would be her jam while sobbing in her room and stroking the mustard-seed necklace that reminds her of him. (Book #46: Mary Ann Misses Logan).  We also imagine she would be so enchanted with Loeb that she would consider buying a pair of tortoiseshell cat eye glasses during her next mall trip, but the BSC would forbid her from wearing them because they are assholes sometimes (see Book #60: Mary Anne's Makeover). ~ATLFYA
4. If I Could Turn Back Time by Cher   Claudia thinks she caused Mimi's stroke, if only she could take back the words that hurt Mimi and cue an angsty 80s music video montage. (Book #7: Claudia and Mean Janine). ~PGHFYA
5. Playing With the Boys by Kenny Loggins  Kristy would use this Top Gun volleyball anthem to get pumped for a day of bossing everyone around and to get ready for Kristy Krusher's games. Although she won't sing along, she'll shout out the "girls play too" lyric each time she hears it, letting everyone know her stance on co-ed sports.  And while she doesn't understand the descriptions of "bodies working overtime," she'll recognize that the song reminds her of Bart, for some reason.  (Book #20: Kristy and the Walking Disaster). ~ATLFYA
6. C’est La Vie by B*witched   Mallory would use this number to get through an afternoon babysitting the Arnold twins to channel that c’est la vie attitude. Maybe she’ll randomly start Irish step dancing like B*witched (Book #21: Mallory and the Trouble with Twins). ~PGHFYA
7. Sabotage by the Beastie Boys  We can see Kristy screaming along to this while plotting her revenge on Betsy Sobak, the 8-year-old child who accidentally broke Claudia's leg in a prank gone wrong.  Kristy's rage-induced scheme ultimately results in the total humiliation of Betsy in front of her peers and classmates.  Only the Beasties could inspire retribution this cruel (Book #19: Claudia and the Big Joke). ~ATLFYA
8. 'Tell That Girl to Shut Up' by Holly and the Italians   “It’s complicated” doesn’t begin to describe Laine’s visit to Stoneybrook. I’m sure most of SMS wants to sing this at her by the end of the book.(Book #51: Stacey's Ex-Best Friend). ~PGHFYA
9. We Are the World by USA for Africa  Dawn must have owned this one - the proceeds went to charity, so she would have been the first in line to buy the single.  And repeated listenings of its positive, slightly self-righteous message would have given Dawn the motivation she needed to amp up her environmental game, even if it also meant annoying and alienating her friends (Book #57: Dawn Saves the Planet). ~ATLFYA
10. Canned Heat by Jamiroquai  Being new (and a one of the few minorities in town) is tough, and when times are tough for Jessi there’s nothing left for her to do but dance and start her own Center Stage plot line (Book 16: Jessi’s Secret Language). ~PGHFYA

Rebel Belle Playlist
Spotify link here.
1. Rebel Girl - Bikini Kill This song gets in my head every time I think of REBEL BELLE. I definitely want to be Harper’s best friend, and I would definitely want to try on her clothes! - MA DFWFYA
2. I’m Not Your Hero - Tegan And Sara Harper kept trying to tell everyone that she wouldn’t be their hero, but it was inevitable. -EAO CLTFYA
3. Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd it’s the quintessential song about Alabama, where the book takes place! - RR DFWFYA
4. Bad Blood - Bastille There used to be major bad blood between Harper & David. -EAO CLTFYA
5. Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day To me, this song always fits the prom/cotillion/young person cross road theme. - SP DFWFYA
6. Smack My Bitch Up - Prodigy For all the gory crazy fight scenes in Rebel Belle. If you can kill someone with a shoe like Harper, you definitely need some good techno action music in your playlist. - MJS CLTFYA
7. Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) - Kelly Clarkson What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger? Yeah, that’s Harper in a nutshell! - MA FYADFW
8. I Feel Pretty - West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein I always associate this song with trying on dresses and trying to be as girly as one can manage. Seems debutante ball-appropriate, so I like it for Harper at the early stages of the book. She wants to be the popular, successful, pretty debutante belle of the ball, but she ends up being so much more. - MJS CLTFYA
9. Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes An aggressive song for sure - I like to think of Harper listening to this to psych herself up for the big fight at the cotillion. “I’m gonna fight ‘em off/A seven nation army couldn’t hold me back” - hell yeah, Harper! - MA FYADFW
10. The Great Pumpkin Waltz - Vince Guaraldi Trio Every cotillion needs a good waltz, and since Pine Grove’s cotillion takes place in November, this one seems appropriate. -EAO CLTFYA

The Lunar Chronicles Promposal Playlist
We couldn’t choose just one book from this great series!
1. Queen of (K)nots - Math Nathanson
FYAON - A song shoutout for Queen Levana from Prince Kai! She tries to take everyone in with her mind control, and if she succeeds in being queen of Lunar AND Earth, she will take down everyone and everything in her path.
2. He’s a Tramp - Peggy Lee
FYAON - Thorne’s theme song (before he meets Cress). He’s a loveable cad!
3. Hungry Like the Wolf - Duran Duran
FYAON - What’s a playlist without some ‘80s hits? This song is in honor of Wolf, at war with himself against his evil training to be the good guy Scarlet knows he can be.
4. The Whole of the Moon - Mandy Moore
FYAON - Cress lives almost her entire life in a tiny little spaceship, watching others live out what she can only imagine doing. She has a lot of daydreams, and this song has that whimsical element that I associate with her.
5. A Sky Full of Stars - Coldplay
FYAON - Cress asks if Wolf is in love with Scarlet and he says she is his Alpha, which Cress likens to the Alpha constellation, as in she is the brightest star in his sky. Wolf replies, “Exactly like that.” and we all awww’d.
6. Speak Now - Taylor Swift
FYAON - I am not ashamed to admit I love me some Taylor Swift, and I could totally picture Cinder, Cress, Iko, and the fellas running around trying to stop Queen Levana and Prince Kai’s wedding from happening with this playing overhead. Yes, it’s a serious matter, but has anyone ever done SO much to sneak into a wedding? And you know Queen Levana yelled at a bridesmaid at some point during the day.
7. I’m Just a Girl - No Doubt
LEXFYA - Cress is just a girl… living in captivity. But SHE’S HAD IT UP TO HERE. Cress is ready to break out and rebel against what has been expected of her all her life. And she’ll do it to the tune of No Doubt.
8. Mr. Roboto - Styx
LEXFYA - Cinder's customers probably always jokingly say "Domo Arigato" to her after a repair well done, so of course the song would be stuck in her head all the time. The more she thinks about it, though, the more it fits her life to a T.
9. The Future Soon - Jonathan Coulton
LEXFYA - Cinder just loves the lines "Well it's gonna be the future soon and I won't always be this way, when the things that make me weak and strange get engineered away."
10. Fly Me to the Moon - Frank Sinatra
LEXFYA - Of course, most people of Earth would NOT want to go to the moon at all, UNTIL Queen Levana hits them with her glamour and they fall in love with her; they would follow her anywhere.

Artifact Hunt: Promposal Playlist with SEAFYA - Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler
Spotify Playlist
1. Yesterday by The Beatles (as the Beatles are not on Spotify, we’ve used a cover band) - Melancholy song about how things were once good and when Min tries to remember the good. ST @ seafya 2. Someone Like You by Adele - Leaving Min with some hope that it does get better ST @ seafya
3. Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac - Signifies Min’s wish to move on, and push Ed and his stuff away. It’s an f-you without being soooo obvious. ST @ seafya
4. You Oughta Know by Alanis Morrisette - Because break ups are angry in a mash of emotions. ST @ seafya
5. Roar by Katy Perry - The empowerment song! You can do this, you deserve better than him. Say goodbye to being a victim and hello to the next great you. ST @ seafya
6. Look What We’ve Become by Grace Potter - The beginning of the end of the relationship. It’s definitely all about what their friends and family are saying and Min trying to push back and be like “We showed them!” But then there’s also a hint of “it’s over”. -PW @ PGH
7. I Don’t Feel It Anymore feat Brooke Fraser - William Fitzsimmons -This is good for when Min is giving Ed the what for at the end and calling him a bastard. But it’s mostly a facade and she’s hiding her sorrow. -PW @ PGH
8. Your Ex-Lover is Dead by Stars -This works for when Min is trying to avoid Ed in the halls. “This scar is a fleck on my porcelain skin” - yeah, you hurt me, douchebag, but the rest of me is amazing and I will heal. (Or so Min should say.) -PW @ PGH
9. Eventually by Tame Impala -This is perfect for Min who needs to know that eventually she will be happy again but she’s allowed to be sad and have feelings now. -PW @ PGH
10. Love Myself by Hailee Steinfeld -Because Hailee was going to play Min in the movie, this seems incredibly prescient. It’s also about a girl getting on with her life. Min doesn’t need a man! (but she can have one if she wants) -PW @ PGH

CEH @ fyadc Jane: a song by the fake band The Maybe Dead Cats. *not on the spotify, but relevant to the playlist* CEH @ fyadc Maura/Will 2: Alanis Morisette "You Oughta Know". Moira was not a great friend to Will 2 and she was not happy about being cut out of his life. Promposal Playlist with FYADFW
My True Love Gave to Me edited by Stephanie Perkins
I’ll Make Love to You - Boyz II Men Acknowledgments Stephanie Perkins’ love of Hallmark Movies can only be expressed through one of the greatest love songs of all time that was marketed to a totally inappropriate age group. AVLFYA
Say - John Mayer Chapter 1: Midnights Three New Year’s Eves of Mags’ unrequited love for Noel could have been easily solved if she would just “Say” what she feels! It takes causing a near death experience for her to understand “it’s better to say too much.” AVLFYA
Chains of Love - Erasure Chapter 2: The Lady and the Fox “How can I explain when there are few words I can choose?” - Fenny is unable to express exactly what he is and why he keeps disappearing. Oh, and because Miranda literally chains herself to Fenny before they triumph over the Lady. FYADFW
I’ll Be Home For Christmas-Josh Groban Chapter 3: Angel in the Snow What’s more depressing than being alone at Christmas time? Cat sitting in the middle of a blizzard, starving with no food in the fridge or cupboards, and being away from home, alone, at Christmas. And what’s more depressing than this song? Not much. Poor Shy…thank goodness for a cowardly neighbor. AVLFYA
Last Christmas - Wham! Chapter 4: Polaris is Where You’ll Find Me I mean, Jenny Han straight up tells us that Santa’s favorite song is “Last Christmas.” And this year, instead of giving her heart to Flynn, Natty’s gonna go find her someone special, Lars. FYADFW
Christmas Time Is Here-the Peanuts Gang Chapter 5: It’s a Yultide Miracle, Charlie Brown How could the main song from the Peanuts Christmas Special not be included? Marigold even asks for the Peanuts special at the tree lot and North is more than willing to provide the extra customer service. On a side note, this is one of my favorite stories in the book since it takes place in Asheville! AVLFYA
Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Neil Diamond Chapter 6: Your Temporary Santa So this is maybe a cop out, but David Levithan wrote about a Jewish boy dressing up as Santa, so I chose a great song about Santa (referenced in the story!) sung by my mom’s favorite singer, Neil Diamond… who is Jewish. I got sidetracked reading about all of the Christmas songs written by Jews - fascinating stuff. FYADFW
Running With the Devil-Van Halen Chapter 7: Krampuslauf Hanna even says that Santa and Satan are just a letter scramble away from being the same person! So, she’s running with the devil at her New Year’s Eve bash. Van Halen fits in with the “louder, madder, midnight stuff” on the party playlist. AVLFYA
You Can’t Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones Chapter 8: What the Hell Have You Done, Sophie Roth? Why do I keep getting the ones with a song referenced in the story? It’s like cheating. I loved this story so much, though, and this song is perfect for it. FYADFW
Leroy the Redneck Reindeer-Joe Diffie Chapter 9: Beer Buckets and Baby Jesus Never heard this song? Do yourself a favor and watch the video–the awesomeness of mullets and line dancing can’t be beat. It’s a perfect fit for Vaughn’s disaster of a Christmas pageant at The Rebel Yell. AFLFYA
I’ll Be Home for Christmas - Sufjan Stevens Chapter 10 - Welcome to Christmas, CA Maria finds out exactly what “home” is in this cute tale, and I think Sufjan’s weirdo version of this would fit in really well with the citizens of Christmas, California. FYADFW
Running Away-Jesse McCartney Chapter 11: Star of Bethlehem A cheesy pop star needs a cheesy pop song to run away to. If I could find a romance novel cover guy in Oklahoma, I’d go there too! AFLFYA
“Svefn-g-englar” - Sigur Ros Chapter 12: The Girl Who Woke the Dreamer So this song is in Icelandic. Yeah, sorry. But it’s beautiful, and the title translates roughly to “sleepwalkers” or “sleeping angels”… which seems appropriate for this story. Some have said that the song is about being born, and I think the waking of the Dreamer is a sort of rebirth. FYADFW

My True Love Gave to Me: Promposal Playlist from FYADFW & AVLFYA
1. I’ll Make Love to You - Boyz II Men
Acknowledgments Stephanie Perkins’ love of Hallmark Movies can only be expressed through one of the greatest love songs of all time that was marketed to a totally inappropriate age group.  AVLFYA
2. Say - John Mayer
Chapter 1: Midnights Three New Year’s Eves of Mags’ unrequited love for Noel could have been easily solved if she would just “Say” what she feels! It takes causing a near death experience for her to understand “it’s better to say too much.” AVLFYA
3. Chains of Love - Erasure
Chapter 2: The Lady and the Fox “How can I explain when there are few words I can choose?” - Fenny is unable to express exactly what he is and why he keeps disappearing. Oh, and because Miranda literally chains herself to Fenny before they triumph over the Lady. FYADFW
4. I’ll Be Home For Christmas - Josh Groban
Chapter 3: Angel in the Snow What’s more depressing than being alone at Christmas time?  Cat sitting in the middle of a blizzard, starving with no food in the fridge or cupboards, and being away from home, alone, at Christmas.  And what’s more depressing than this song?  Not much.  Poor Shy...thank goodness for a cowardly neighbor.  AVLFYA
5. Last Christmas - Wham!
Chapter 4: Polaris is Where You’ll Find Me I mean, Jenny Han straight up tells us that Santa’s favorite song is “Last Christmas.” And this year, instead of giving her heart to Flynn, Natty’s gonna go find her someone special: Lars. FYADFW
6. Christmas Time Is Here-the Peanuts Gang
Chapter 5: It’s a Yuletide Miracle, Charlie Brown How could the main song from the Peanuts Christmas Special not be included? Marigold even asks for the Peanuts special at the tree lot and North is more than willing to provide the extra customer service. On a side note, this is one of my favorite stories in the book since it takes place in Asheville! AVLFYA
7. Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Neil Diamond
Chapter 6: Your Temporary Santa So this is maybe a cop out, but David Levithan wrote about a Jewish boy dressing up as Santa, so I chose a great song about Santa (referenced in the story!) sung by my mom’s favorite singer, Neil Diamond… who is Jewish. I got sidetracked reading about all of the Christmas songs written by Jews - fascinating stuff. FYADFW
8. Running With the Devil - Van Halen
Chapter 7: Krampuslauf Hanna even says that Santa and Satan are just a letter scramble away from being the same person! So, she’s running with the devil at her New Year’s Eve bash. Van Halen fits in with the “louder, madder, midnight stuff” on the party playlist. AVLFYA
9. You Can’t Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones
Chapter 8: What the Hell Have You Done, Sophie Roth? Why do I keep getting the ones with a song referenced in the story? It’s basically like cheating. I loved this story so much, though, and this song is perfect for it. FYADFW
10. Leroy the Redneck Reindeer - Joe Diffie
Chapter 9: Beer Buckets and Baby Jesus Never heard this song? Do yourself a favor and watch the video--the awesomeness of mullets and line dancing can’t be beat. It’s a perfect fit for Vaughn’s disaster of a Christmas pageant at The Rebel Yell.  AVLFYA
11. I’ll Be Home for Christmas - Sufjan Stevens
Chapter 10 - Welcome to Christmas, CA Maria finds out exactly what “home” is in this cute tale, and I think Sufjan’s weirdo version of this would fit in really well with the citizens of Christmas, California. FYADFW
12. Running Away - Jesse McCartney
Chapter 11: Star of Bethlehem A cheesy pop star needs a cheesy pop song to run away to.  If I could find a romance novel cover guy in Oklahoma, I’d go there too! AVLFYA
"Svefn-g-englar" - Sigur Ros
Chapter 12: The Girl Who Woke the Dreamer So this song is in Icelandic. Yeah, sorry. But it’s beautiful, and the title translates roughly to “sleepwalkers” or “sleeping angels”... which seems appropriate for this story. Daughter of Smoke and Bone Promposal Playlist
This book was rife with emotion! There was plenty of songs to choose from. Get ready for some intense feelings!
1. Heavy In Your Arms - Florence + the Machine
FYAON - This song is intense and we feel like it perfectly encapsulates Karou’s feelings about Akiva after she gets her memories of her first life back and realizes all the wonderful and heartbreaking things they’ve been through together. She loves him! But he’s killed her family! Are you strong enough to stand / Protecting both your heart and mine? / Who is the betrayer? / Who's the killer in the crowd?
2.  Three Wishes - The Pierces
FYAON - And you want three wishes: One to fly the heavens - What better describes Karou than wishes, flying, and heaven (angels)?
3.  Bring Me To Life - Evanescence
FYAON - This may be a song you never really want to hear again, but we thought it captured the moment between Akiva and Karou when he helps her remember her past life. She’s been living a lie! Her spirit is sleeping inside until he finds it and leads it home! Oh, it’s all so cheesy.
4.  Angel - Sarah McLachlan
FYAON - OK, this seems very on the nose, I know, but hear me out. This is the song that made me (code name: Chandandler Bong) want to do DoSaB for our playlist choice. Listening to the lyrics, this song reminded me of Akiva and Karou and the night they spent in the Marrakesh hotel room, right before Karou knew who Akiva really was. BUT I picture this song from Akiva’s perspective, not Karou’s. Yes, they’re both taking comfort in each other, but Akiva is the one who has really been suffering the last 18 years. Karou is an ‘angel’ he never thought he’d find again, and that night spent in her arms was gold to him. I need some distraction / oh, beautiful release / memories seep from my veins / let me be empty and weightless and maybe / I'll find some peace tonight
5.  Teeth - Lady Gaga
FYAON - I mean...this doesn’t need any explanation. I picture this being sung in Brimstone’s shop, surrounded by piles of molars. *shivers*
6. Your Ghost - Greg Laswell
KCFYA - I see this song from Akiva’s perspective. He’s been haunted by Madrigal since her perceived death. Even when he see’s Karou, he’s not really sure it’s her and having to relieve all these past feelings and atone for his actions. He also has to make the decision to really put Madrigal behind forever because she’s never coming back and the only part left of her is in Karou.
7.  Ways to Go - Grouplove
KCFYA - Karou and Akiva are in this constant imbalance in their relationship during Smoke and Bone. Neither are really in a place for their relationship to flourish (that’s why there’s three books). Also if we really want to hit it on the head the line, “I didn’t know my name” really fits with poor Karou.
8.  Lost and Found - Katie Herzig
KCFYA - Karou wasn’t necessarily lost at the beginning of the novel, but she did have a part of her that was missing and chunks of her history that were left hidden from her. Akivia is symbolically both the one that left her and found her (even if she was taken from him).  They’re constantly drawn to one another across time and worlds, and they aren’t hole without the other. They save each other.
9.  Meet Me in the Woods - Lord Huron
KCFYA - Karou is on a journey in this novel, and it’s a journey of self-discovery. She’s finding things out about herself that she perhaps would rather not know. The line, “The truth is stranger than my own worst dreams” really sticks out in this song. With the truth, she has to confront the horrible reality of her past and what her future is going to look like. It’s easier to stay in the dark.
10.  Timekeeper - Lucy Schwartz
KCFYA - This song is all about fate and how it can be twisted with another. The lines” Have you forgotten all that you are Fates and fables all written in stone” are taunting Akiva. He’s reunited with Karou but because of what he’s done he knows his chances of getting her love are slim.
BONUS:  I Of the Storm - Of Monsters and Men
KCFYA - This song is all about shame and guilt and trying not to be consumed by it. It’s also about the fear of having this shame displayed for another and the fear that they won’t be accepted or loved again. Much like Akiva and the wishbone.
BONUS:  Got Love - Tove Lo
KCFYA - Karou and Akiva aren’t the only love story. This song feels very Zuzana and her boyfriend Mik. They provide a lot of the comic relief in this serious book and stay true to each other throughout the series. They’re fiercely loyal to one another and are basically the best couple ever.
