The Oscar de la Renta Fall 2015 Ad Campaign:  A Little Bit 50s, a Little Bit 80s, a Little Bit 90s = Post Modern Fashion

I spent time this morning writing a post on this subject and thought I saved it as a draft.  I thought wrong, and it has disappeared into the ethers.  Argh.  Here goes my recreation:

The Fall 2015 Oscar de la Renta ad campaign has appeared, and it is the first under designer Peter Copping’s stewardship of the house.  I LOVE seeing 90s-era models still working, and Carolyn Murphy’s classic beauty is a perfect fit for a house that specializes in classic, elegant, “uptown” clothes.   David Sims photographed the campaign and he, like Carolyn Murphy, is strongly associated with 1990s fashion.  

The first thing I though when I saw the images from the campaign was “Charles James, Cecil Beaton.”  The pinks, blues, and greens, opera gloves, and silk taffeta skirt all telegraph those inspirations to me, and not so subtly.  Considering the Charles James show as at the Met only a few months ago, I’m sure  these images are fresh in the minds of many fashion enthusiasts.

While the references here are clear to me, the creative team kept things modern.  David Sims’ saturated backdrops have a grittier feel than the prim pastels we see in the Beaton photos.  Alex White’s styling, and Guido Palau’s hair have a much more ‘undone’ feeling than the 1950s or even the 1980s would.  1980s? ...

This cocktail dress immediately makes me think Emmanuel Ungaro or even Dior late 1970s / early 1980s.  (The pouty skirted bustier dresses so associated with the 80s actually began appearing in the late 1970s.  Fashion doesn’t operate on a strict clock that coincides neatly with the beginning and end of each decade.  For example, what we think of as an obvious representation of 1960s fashion doesn’t begin to appear until the middle of that decade.)  1980s fashion actually took a lot of inspiration from the 1950s, so this is not a surprise to me.  

The mixing of references from disparate fashion eras is in this campaign is a great example of how post modern fashion works generally:  increasingly, it operates in a self-referential vacuum.  What I’d like to know is what people looking at these images will think 100 years from now?  What will seem uniquely 2015?  Will it be obvious that there’s 1950s, 1980s, and 1990s at work here?  Or will this broad reaching “pulling from the canon, putting it together in our own way,” seem uniquely early 2000s fashion?  

Whatever the answer, I think the campaign succeeds in imparting its intended message.  These clothes are for a modern woman who appreciates sophisticated, elegant, classic fashion.  Today’s ODLR woman takes up the mantle of the mid-century American beauty.
