The following chart shows the results in numbers below:
Before Airing
Based on the results collected, it is clear that overall viewers are were pleased with the show prior to the airing of the finale. Many of them were excited about the drama of the show, the actions of the characters, or what they believed the characters would do next based on what had occurred in the previous episode.
The tweets showed the reason why the show was so highly anticipated was because of the one week that was skipped before airing the finale. This was a smart move based on the fact that Raina, Ghost’s daughter, was killed in the previous episode. Many viewers tweeted about what they thought would happen next based on that character’s death, and they expressed excitement about the drama that would occur because of it.
Raina’s death signified a huge turning point in the plot because out of all of the characters she was the most innocent. Viewers even created a fake funeral for Raina, as well starting a petition to bring her back to life. Also, Raina’s death means that Ghost will resort to participating in illegal activity to avenge his daughter.
The negative tweets, ironically, were mostly about the week that was skipped before the finale airing. Viewers did not want to have to wait so long to see what would happen next. There were also complaints about spoilers being leaked. Overall, viewers were generally excited about the finale, and were highly anticipating the airing.
On August 2nd to the 3rd when the finale aired, 212 tweets were monitored over the course of 24 hours and placed in the following categories:
Type 1 (Green): Generally excited/positive responses about the finale
Type 2 (Orange): Generally negative/disappointed tweets about the finale
Type 3 (Yellow): Generally excited/positive about the next season
The following chart shows the results in numbers below:
After Airing
The results showed that viewers truly enjoyed the finale airing. The drama, the avenging of Raina’s death, and other big surprises that occurred within the episode impressed the viewers. Many viewers expressed that they didn’t know if they could wait one year to see what happens next within the series. Although the positive tweets outweighed the negative, some of the negative tweets can present opportunities for Starz network and the producers.
Many of the tweets showed that viewers would like for the number of episodes in the next season to be extended to at least 13, versus the 10 that this season offered. The viewers also expressed that the season finale should have lasted more than the standard time, and should have been extended to 2 hours instead of 1 like many other finales are.
A number of tweets also expressed frustration with the Starz app. The app can be used to watch the series on the go. Many people tweeted the app would not play the episode within the first few hours that it became available, which may have been due to the volume of users on the app at once. Lastly, viewers complained about the writing within the episode and how they believed characters should have reacted, or how scenes were shot. Many expressed that Ghost and his wife’s reaction to Raina’s death was disappointing because they weren’t as upset as they expected. Viewers also expressed that the scene were Raina’s killer is shot should have been shown. The scene was shot in a way that viewers didn’t know who shot who, because the scene cut to reactions of other characters outside of the scene of the actual shooting.
It is clear that viewers are emotionally invested in the show, and have become very involved with the characters of the story. The series has done its part in keeping the viewers on the edge of their seats waiting for more. There are opportunities to give the viewers more of what they want by considering extending the length of future finale episodes, or adding more episodes to the next season.
However, that would require more money from the network. Also, the glitch within the app could become a bigger problem as the audience size continues to grow each season. Mobile streaming is become a big trend over the years, and can work in the favor of the network’s favor if it can minimize further problems for season to come.
