ABOUT THE PRESENTOR
John M. Cachat has over 40 years of experience in the Operational Excellence and Enterprise Quality Management in manufacturing and government verticals. Cachat focused his career on reducing costs and risk with business improvements using Supply Chain Enterprise Information Systems, especially the strategy for leveraging existing investment in ERP, PLM, MES, CRM, QMS and other legacy systems.
Cachat’s expertise and knowledge started during his co-op with General Motors where he worked every hourly position in the plant before spending time in the front offices. After graduate school, Cachat managed a major United States Air Force (USAF) research project that focused on the non-financial and non-inventory related business processes, before any of these current quality management standards existed, like ISO9000, IATF16949, AS9100, ISO1348, GMP and GLP and GSP. Production Part Approval Process
In today's global economy, controlling cost and ensuring product quality are critical to any company's success. With more and more component parts being outsourced to foreign manufacturers, companies are under pressure to deliver quality products with a high level of consistency.
PPAP is one of the most common ways to ensure this compliance and efficiency in manufacturing. It was first utilized by the automotive industry but has been adopted in many other industries as a way to ensure adherence to international quality standards and expectations.
What is a PPAP?
Using the PPAP process provides documentary evidence that a supplier's production process can consistently meet customer requirements. It also helps customers to establish trust and confidence in suppliers by reducing turnbacks and revisions of products and processes.
The PPAP process is comprised of 18 elements, and the required steps depend on customer requirements and the complexity of the product being manufactured. Each element should be checked off prior to submission of a PPAP report.
Design Records
In addition to the PPAP checklist, you should also submit copies of all the technical drawings that were produced during your PPAP inspection. These should be accompanied by a copy of the purchase order and a detailed description of any changes made to the drawing.
Engineering Change Notices (ECN)
When there is a change to the CAD drawings that were used in your production run, your PPAP report should include documentation of those changes. This is a document that will need to be approved by the customer engineering department before your sample production parts can be shipped.

This is a high-visibility position that will become a leadership opportunity for someone with the right skills. As the lead Engineer in this position, you will lead the startup of a prototyping initiative and should have strong experience with developing a product from prototyping through FAI and PPAP. You will develop and write CNC milling and lathe programs using G-Code and CAD / CAM software. The Sr. Applications Engineer will review customers' technical needs and work to develop specific solutions to meet these needs. You will work cross-functionally to ensure that proposed solutions can be integrated with current systems and equipment or if new investments are necessary. If you thrive in proving out CNC programs from solid models in precision machining environments, then you will enjoy this opportunity. Job Skills and Requirements: Set up mills and lathes with existing programs. Prove out First Article part. Knowledge of Okuma mills, lathes and Kitamura horizontal mills are a plus. CMM knowledge and programming experience is a plus. Minimum of 5 years working in a precision CNC machining in a setup or a production type environment. 2 or 4 year degree in a related manufacturing field.
