World-renowned virtuoso Ray Chen has once again transcended the boundaries of music through his practice sessions at Tonic, as he works toward the goal of creating a 'premium sound.'

A Different Tone from the Start, and the First Movement Flowing Like a Fairy Tale

In the practice sessions held yesterday and today at Tonic, world-renowned virtuoso Ray Chen unveiled a sound that is on a different level.

In the first movement, his violin began with a mysterious, dark tone, as if on the verge of tears, slowly unfolding like the beginning of a fairy tale with the words "Once upon a time..." The warm and comforting tone wrapped the listeners in a sense of security and peace.

The Clear Difference Between Brahms and Tchaikovsky

Ray Chen made a clear distinction between the sounds of Brahms and Tchaikovsky.

He explained that Brahms should evoke feelings of longing and sorrow, while Tchaikovsky should be youthful, intense, and sensually captivating. He emphasized the role of repetition in Tchaikovsky's music, describing it as something that provides a "reward"—a sensation of gratification.

“Lift” and the Lively Jump

He sought to express the technique of "lift" in a chic and lively manner.

This technique involves hitting the note slightly early, jumping lightly upwards, and then landing softly, creating a sense of movement. It adds depth to the piece and plays a key role in distinguishing the rhythms of Brahms and Tchaikovsky.

The Aesthetics of Collaboration and Interaction with the Piano

Ray Chen regarded collaboration with the piano as a critical element in concertos.

He pointed out that if the collaboration fails, the balance of tension and fluidity breaks, ultimately affecting the quality of the entire sound.

Pulse, Waltz Rhythm and Articulation

From a technical standpoint, he emphasized clear articulation and the control of "pulse."

In particular, Tchaikovsky's waltz rhythm isn't just about keeping time—it must be expressed with a slight pull, as though the rhythm is being drawn in.

This feeling was finely tuned in rehearsal with the orchestra.

The Second Movement Twirls Like a Dancer

The second movement had the elegance of a dancer's rotation, with refined and graceful rhythms.

In the solo sections, a Brahms-like "lift" was added, along with more delicate expression, creating the sensation of dancing lines filling the stage.

A Detailed Approach to Premium Sound

In his premium sound practice, he fine-tuned everything from bow speed to direction and pressure, creating even more dramatic tones. He explained that a premium sound can be heavy, and without a strong foundation, it becomes difficult to achieve.

 A strong foundation requires countless hours of practice and this year, his focus on developing and perfecting premium sound has been central to his practicing.

When compared to his previous sound, the texture and resonance were on another level, and those listening in the Tonic practice room were overwhelmingly impressed by his premium sound.

High Notes and Emotional Explosion in the Perfect Third Movement

In today's session, he focused on practicing the third movement of the Tchaikovsky concerto, perfecting long bows, pressure control, and even the "choking" tone.

After the cadenza, the climax was reached, where emotion and technique peaked, and his performance overwhelmed the stage.

Quiet Yet Full of Emotion

In the emotional sections of the first and second movements, it felt as though a luxurious and graceful tea party was being held in a royal garden, with Ray Chen himself imagined as the one serving the finger foods, expanding the emotional range. In the quiet section of the third movement, he described it as "feeling like dancing at a bar," releasing his inner energy.

The premium sound was present even here, as it allowed a delicate yet vibrant feeling to emerge.

Genuine Communication, Encouragement, and the Spread of Inspiration

Through the Tonic platform, Ray Chen communicated with musicians around the world and provided encouragement, motivation, and inspiration to Tonic users.

He refined the parts he had played the previous day, delivering them with greater sophistication and clarity. His cadenza once again showcased the lasting prestige of a Queen Elizabeth Competition winner.

At 5:00 PM today (Thailand time), he once again opened the Tonic practice room, presenting a more refined sound in rehearsal with the orchestra.

Even in collaboration with the conductor, he paid close attention to every note, maintaining a solid artistic direction and focus.

His sound was like a masterpiece sculpted by Michelangelo or painted by Leonardo da Vinci—meticulously crafted.

Yesterday and today's practice sessions were a testament to why Ray Chen is considered a world-class virtuoso. Beyond his exceptional abilities, his delicate and warm personality makes him a pioneer in fostering the beautiful connection between music and people.

he has no idea what's happening. one moment he's busy checking some stock inventory ( he's least favourite part of working as a florist ), and the next he's being bombarded by questions from a customer he doesn't recognize. it doesn't help that wenjun's korean is far from well... amazing. and in fear that he'd seem too unapproachable, he finds himself only staring at the said customer with wide eyes, brows slightly furrowed in confusion.

"sorry... but you said you wanted a rose...?" he repeats, only for the boy in front of him to laugh and give him a sleazy smile. yes and you're the rose i'm looking for is what the man replies with, which only makes wenjun only more confused. "huh?" it's then when it hits him rather belatedly that he's probably being hit on, and wenjun's never been very good at turning people down.

as though some sort of higher power could hear the gears in his head turning as he attempted to think of an excuse to give this man, sujin appears. and in what feels to wenjun like a line from a movie, sujin manages to get the man to scurry off. sujin is taller than wenjun, and the younger boy has to lift his head slightly to meet sujin's gaze.

"oh hyung, thank you!" he says, bowing, he genuinely is thankful for sujin's help – had the older boy showed up any later, wenjun probably would've pulled the i don't speak korean card in an attempt to get the guy to go away. he doesn't have any time to explain to sujin that he was simply confused for the most part though, because before he can even blink, the older boy is leaning against the table and asking wenjun to practice.

practice? wenjun furrows his brows again. "but i think i could tell you to uh... eff off," he says, a little careful to not swear in front of his boss' son. it wasn't as though wenjun was a saint, but even he knew better than to throw vulgarities at the child of his boss. "i don't know... you're nothing like the guy from earlier though, hyung. i don't think i have it in me to do that to you," he confesses.

There was a bit of a wait at the pick up. No line, just one awful human being deciding his time was more important than everybody else's. To add to Sujin's irritation, the idiot wasn't even there for flowers, he was trying to pick up the guy arranging them.

"He's taken." Sujin joined the two at the counter. "Get lost." Or die. The chill in his eyes made it clear that there was no third option.

The man wisely chose to live. Well done.

"Wenjun," Sujin sighed. "You are too nice. Don't give these people any of your time." His mom's employees weren't his responsibility, but he had time to kill today since one should never rush to attend a funeral. Might as well offer some advice. "Here, let's practice." He leaned over the counter the way the other guy did when he walked in. "Pretend I am the asshole from earlier, aggressively hitting on you and being a pest. Tell me to fuck off."
