the loona situation

there are some things that i think need to be said in the wake of the dispatch chuu article, and that i haven't seen anyone else directly address.

tldr for those who didnt see: loona had a system with blockberry where they shared costs equally, but revenue 70-30 in bbc's favor. this means that if the cost was $100, and the revenue was $100, loona and bbc each paid $50, but bbc earned $70 and loona earned $30, so loona went $20 more in debt to bbc despite the project recouping all of its expenses. these numbers only get worse the higher the cost/revenue ratio is. loona even pays bbc if there is zero revenue, because they get loona's portion of the cost.

functionally, this means that loona stays in debt. forever. according to bbc's numbers, the loona members - even after all of loona's successes and the fact that it makes a net gain now - are all still around $150,000 in debt to the company after 5 years. this is in addition to the other abuses standard to the idol industry, like starvation and mental abuse.

what i want to talk about is this: a series of facts.

1. many of the girls' families were concerned about the promises bbc made to their trainees and thought loona was a scam at best and a trafficking scheme at worst.

2. yves was promised debut within weeks of joining bbc. olivia hye trained for one day. loona 1/3 was flown all over the world for teeny tiny teaser videos. all of this was pre-debut. many of them talk about it seeming too good to be true.

3. go won and olivia hye have admitted they were already starstruck by older members of loona like heejin before even considering joining bbc. they saw their ads at the bus stop on the way to school. they wanted badly to be friends with them.

4. all contracts are individual. any revenue from one girl was given solely to her and applied solely to her own debt.

4a. chuu is the only member who's escaped her trainee debt. her revenue was not applied to anyone else's debts.

6. when a member is in debt to the company at the end of her contract, she can be compelled to renew to pay it back.

7. loona had the most expensive predebut in kpop history.

8. of the 12 members, only haseul, vivi, jinsoul, and yves were over south korea's age of majority — 19 in international age — when they debuted.

8a. of these 4, only vivi, jinsoul, and yves were 20. haseul had turned 19 less than four months ago. 9. kim lip was 18 when she debuted with 'eclipse.' chuu was 18 when she debuted with 'heart attack.' choerry was 17 when she debuted with 'love cherry motion.' go won was 17 when she debuted with 'one and only.' hyunjin was 16 when she debuted with 'around you.' olivia hye was 16 when she debuted with 'egoist.' heejin was 15 when she debuted with 'vivid.'

9a. yeojin was 14 years old when she debuted with 'kiss later'.

hanadoll is a multimedia idol music project that im absolutely obsessed w forever. basically its abt this group of idols who are implanted with "flower seeds" that they are supposed to make bloom in order to debut !! theres currently three seasons, s1 focusinf on the main group (anthos) during their predebut stage, s2 introduces a former group (louloudi) and anthos' debut, and s3 is currebtly ongoing w the two !!!!

this is dumb but do you also sometimes feel like Yves is trying to (maybe subconsciously?) visually emulate Sulli? like some of the pictures she posts are way too sulli-esque lol

I think that's definitely possible. Sulli was a trendsetter, and her impact is long lasting - at the same time, Sulli is also not the only one who does these 'Sulli-esque' photos; many of both Yves' and Sulli's photos hark back to the Cyworld style of selfies and aesthetic, which I suppose could be analagous to the early days tumblr aesthetic of pre 2013, or even myspace (notably, Cyworld predates myspace).

Alongside Yves and Sulli, you might notice that Hyuna also, from time to time, posts photos in a similar vein to this aesthetic (though also has her unique style) - and a lot of older generation idols will often have predebut or simply older pictures in this style too. But I think there's something that is common between them, whether intentional by Yves or not.

i wish i was a predebut stan 😭 i listened to chuu's heart attack in 2018 which i was OBSESSED with and it was my first loona solo and first song i heard from all of them but i didn't get fully into them until 2019 when they came out with butterfly :') then i became a bigger fan when so what and why not came out. my favorite solo always changes but rn it's let me in by haseul (my bias), vivid by heejin, and eclipse by kim lip

i hope all 12 of them are able to reunite, whether as a group again or just as friends 🫂

lissie: omg yeah! good for you for having chuu as your first solo. mine was kim lip's when i heard that the song is included in nasa's eclipse playlist. butterfly is such a good song to get into loona, especially the juxtaposition between it and hi high + i was there when they release the XnX teasers and my heart drops because of how great it is (i remember butterfly is my early bday present cause it was released d-1 from it)

No one wants to wake up to the news I woke up to this morning. No one. I was preparing my coffee, turning on wi-fi and the first thing I read is: “BlockBerry Creative kicks Chuu out of LOONA”. I blinked my eyes countless times and I went on Facebook just to see more and more posts about it. I couldn’t believe it. My LOONA dream was over and there I was at 8AM sitting in my kitchen looking at the screen of my iPhone.

I know this may sound a bit too much but… Yes. Tears started falling from my eyes and they wouldn’t stop. I don’t consider this to be an over dramatic reaction like many of you could easily consider. I look at it as unconditional love, dedication and passion. Something unexplainable, no one can translate love into words or even admiration. Some people get your attention and you don’t know why. And while I am fully aware that LOONA are probably not over, they’re just down to eleven, I also am aware that it’s never going to be the same. It doesn’t matter if it is Kim Lip or Vivi or Yves or Heejin or Jinsoul. It doesn’t. I saw this girlgroup being born when they were just twelve predebut girls. A few years later they turned into strong and confident women and extremely inspirational. They brought the term “lore” back in the music industry and scored several of the biggest flops of this new decade. I was obsessed and extremely proud of it.

I’ve always been aware that girlgroups are not meant to last and that’s why I flew to New York just to see them live this year. I knew this was a fast career and that’s why I spent over 800€ on this girlgroup (I’ve watched their stages, I saw them graduate from nugupromoter, I bought their music, I took a trip just to see them, paid hotel… You make the counts!). I wanted to live it as much as I could and looking back I am so proud of every single thing I did for them. They brought back my fan vein in a way I’ve never experienced before. Girls Generation, IU… They’re both established artists and it’s another story on how their careers are handled.

Every orbit was aware that Chuu was not happy. Ever since “Chuu Can Do It” became a smash, something went wrong and the relationship between Chuu and the company has always been weird. There’s indifference and I don’t know what to think. Nonetheless, I am no one to judge that. All I want to make clear is: LOONA are never going to be LOONA again and that’s why I feel like my dream has been crashed. My LOONA dream has ended. It hurts so bad when you’re not prepared… After all they lost Queendom 2 to WJSN just this year.

And no. I am not turning my back on Chuu. This was a rough decision but I know what it's like to be in a place where you don't belong or feel included and sometimes... It's better to just go for it.

Yet, I always like to see things from the bright side and I am going to always support LOONA as a group just like any of the twelve girls as individual acts. They’ve had an amazing and beautiful impact in my life.
