Italian Adventures Part II: Bologna

Finally, the time has come - welcome to Italian Adventures Part II: Bologna!

Boyfriend introduced me to the gorgeous city of Bologna not long after we got together, and I can’t help but wonder if that’s why it holds such a special place in my heart. On our first trip there, I fell head-over-heels for the city & ever more smitten with Boyfriend. We’ve been back a handful of times since that first visit, & every time - without fail - we dream of uprooting everything we have here in Dublin & running off to the Emilia-Romagna capital. It’s romantic, it’s quaint & peaceful, it miraculously remains somewhat untainted by tourism, and it’s the birthplace of one of our favourite meals: the mighty ragu.

Bologna is known as ‘La Grassa’ in Italian - which translates to ‘the fat’ in English - & it isn’t hard to see why: you will be extremely hard pressed to have a bad meal in the city. Although I’ve included a list of our favourite restaurants below, use that more as a guideline to get out & find the places that work for you; we’ve eaten at a hell of a lot more restaurants than are listed here, but these are our old faves. Wherever you find yourself, please don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy two dishes - tagliatelle al ragu & gramigna alla salsiccia - both of which are specialties of the city. You can thank us when you get home.

As with our Italian Adventures Part I: Florence guide, there is a huge amount of recommendations in this post. To make life easier, I’ve streamlined everything into six sections: Stay / Coffee / Eat / Drink / Museums + Attractions / Places to See + Things to Do. The difference between the last two sections is an entry fee; Museums + Attractions are all paid entrance, while the Places to See + Things to Do are free.

S T A Y

Airbnb // we stayed in the most fantastic apartment on our last visit. The flat - Silent Bright Apartment - is located a stone’s throw from Strada Maggiore & was honestly the best Airbnb experience we’ve ever had. It was spacious and clean, it had a balcony, it overlooked the blazing rooftops of the city, the kitchen was extremely well equipped for cooking, the bed was amazing, and there was a bathtub in the bedroom. The location was about an eight minute walk to the main square in the city. Basically: it. was. perfection. Added bonus: there was a totally adorable turtle roaming free in the courtyard below! We named him Sporo and had a really hard time leaving him behind.

Albergo delle Drapperie // if you’re looking for something more central, you can’t really find anything better than this boutique hotel. It’s quite small, and it literally overlooks the bustling market stalls of the old town. If I remember correctly: the hotel is across the road from a beautiful flower shop (feast for your eyes), around the corner from Tamborini (feast for your belly), and a further few minutes walk from Osteria del Sole (feast for your Italian soul), which is kind of exactly where you want to be.

C O F F E E

Caffe Zanarini // for us, this is the Gilli of Bologna. The coffee is fantastic, the pastries are even better, and the space has that super Italian feel to it that just warms my heart. We normally nab a spot along the bar & enjoy our breakfast the true Italian way, but once in a while we treat ourselves to the somewhat extortionate prices for a table outside on the square. Let me tell you, it is always worth it, if even just for the people watching. (And pigeons.) A must-visit.

E A T

Trattoria Serghei // three words: gramigna alla salsiccia. After ragu (duh), this is the dish of Bologna, and Serghei do it extremely well. It’s a small, traditionally run family joint that we find ourselves returning to time and time again. The food is always exceptional. We normally go for the ragu & the salsiccia pasta dishes to start, and then share a big hunk of meat as a main - the last time, it was an insanely tender pork shank that was about the same size as Boyfriend’s head. Amen to that! A must-visit.

Osteria de Coltelli Da Biagio // a tiny bit further than some might be willing to venture, but the food is worth it. The dishes are on the larger, heartier side of things, and the meal as a whole was outstanding value for money! ... that said, we did notice the staff favoring the locals over tourists like us, but the quality of the food was high enough for us to let this slide.

La Capriata // wandering along a covered archway off Strada Maggiore one day, we stumbled across LC & decided to stop in for a lazy lunch. We ate in the most beautiful sun-drenched courtyard, surrounded by lemon trees. The food was outstanding. It was super fresh - we had an amazing caprese salad that was beyond delicious - and perfectly traditional; I had an unforgettable ragu with homemade pasta served in a Parmesan bowl. A bowl made of Parmesan = the stuff of dreams!

Pizza Regina // sometimes, you just need a pizza and you need it to be reliable. We opted for the less traditional take-out option and brought our meal with us to Osteria del Sole so we could have it with a beer. We ordered a custom made pizza - n’duja + mozzarella - & devoured it within five minutes of sitting down. It was amazing!

Lindt // I’m kind of a bit sorry/not sorry for including this in my list. Listen, just hear me out: we had delicious chocolate gelato in the most amazing chocolate hazelnut dipped cones and it was worth every single penny. I regret nothing.

La Sorbetteria Castiglione // for a more authentic gelato experience, we always trek a little bit out of our way and it never disappoints. Our faves are the pistacchio and nocciola!

D R I N K

Osteria del Sole // definitely one of our favourite places in all of Bologna. According to my notes, it’s the oldest osteria in the region - 1465 apparently! - and it is so bloody brilliant in it’s simplicity. You make your way through the market streets, buy some antipasti goods in the nearby market, bring it into Osteria del Sole, buy a drink to go with it, and have your lunch picnic style alongside locals at one of the long communal tables. It is fantastic. An experience not to be missed: a must-visit.

Osteria I’Infedele // a recent find. Similar in style to Osteria del Sole in that it was small, filled with locals, cheap & relaxed, but it had a more youthful vibe to it and a wider drinks selection of cocktails etc.

RosaRose // located on Via Clavature, this is a fantastic spot for people watching. Boyfriend & I sat outside for hours one evening, listening to a nearby street musician, soaking up the atmosphere, enjoying the free platter of food that came with our spritzs, watching the sky change from blue to pink to dusk. Perfection. To experience the true Bologna vibe, this is a must-visit.

Enoteca Italiana // a beautiful wine shop that has a small amount of barrels & stools for dining on. We enjoyed some wine with a delicious meat & cheese platter on one of our first visits, and have since returned for breakfast & coffee.

Bar Senza Nome // a fantastically vibrant bar, located on a buzzy street lined with heaps of similar places. However! This one, apparently, is the only bar in Italy that is run & managed by deaf people. It’s amazing! You go in & the walls are lined with how-to sign language photos for ordering your drink! If you aren’t brave enough, the barmaids read your lips and that’s equally as amazing. Such a fantastic experience. Added bonus: you can eat your weight in free monkey nuts while drinking extremely cheap spritzs! Probably our favourite bar in the world. A must-visit.

Birreria Popolare // a hipster craft beer place that was located conveniently near to our apartment. We were drawn in by the beer emoji sign out front, and we sampled some nice Italian beer. Added bonus: if you’re lucky enough to visit at the right time (we were), you get a free platter of food with your drinks!

Le Stanze // I kind of liked the thought of this bar more than I actually enjoyed our experience there. It’s located inside an old chapel from the 16th century, and there are original frescoes still lining the walls & the ceilings. It was cool to see the artwork, but there was nothing distinctly Italian about the place. It was overpriced, and too touristy for our tastes.

M U S E U M S + A T T R A C T I O N S

Palazzo dell’Archiginnasio // one of the most magical, dreamlike buildings I’ve ever visited - somewhat reminiscent of Hogwarts. Boyfriend & I spent ages wandering back and forth along the arched passageways, but the real draw (and the part you have to pay into) is the wooden Teatro Anatomico from the 17th century, where they used to hold anatomy lessons. Worth the €3!

Santa Maria della Vita // the lure of this church, although pretty beautiful in its own right, is actually a fantastic group of wooden sculptures hidden in the back. They charge a measly €4 to see the group, but it’s certainly worth it: the scene depicted is the moment that Jesus dies, and honestly they are some of the most expressive pieces of art we’ve seen.

La Due Torri // yes, it’s very steep, and yes, it’s claustrophobic.. but it’s worth it for the breathtaking views over the terracotta rooftops of Bologna. Added bonus: it’s super cheap! A must-visit.

Palazzo Fava // a renaissance palace & art gallery space. The very first time we went to Bologna together, we saw an amazing Edward Hopper exhibition here, so it’s definitely worth checking upcoming shows just in case!

Museo Civico Archeologico // fantastic archaeology museum to wander around if you find yourself looking for something to do. Particular highlights for us were the beautiful building itself, and the Egyptian exhibition.

Market shopping // wandering along the tiny streets around Via Drapperie and Via Pescherie Vecchie, you get a real feel for the Bologna lifestyle. The flower shops, the fish stalls, the butchers, the cheese-mongers, we love it all. Our favourite places to stop into for some goodies are Tamburini & Simoni, both of which are reliably great. Definitely a must-visit.

Sometimes I refer to myself as a ‘hopeless girl’ as I STILL haven’t mastered the art of nail varnish OR walking in heels and my hair is pretty much always just straight or in a pony tail (I’ve now added curly to my repertoire!) That said, I still often get described as girly. I love make-up and wearing pretty clothes and I have way more shoes than anyone needs – albeit nothing with more than a 2.5 inch heel! I’ve made the mistake of backpacking before with ONLY practical clothes and spent the whole time wishing I’d packed some mascara and a pair of nice sandals. Seriously NO ONE can rock the trekker sandals and whilst they certainly have a place in your backpack, I don’t recommend wearing them every day or suffer the tan marks! I swear I still had a faint brown square on my feet the following summer! (It seems the only part of me ever to tan is my feet!) So with that in mind, I am certainly no beauty expert but I have picked up some tips along the way which I’d love to share with you!

Let’s talk Make-up!

I’m certainly not one of those girls who can’t nip to the corner shop without a full face of make-up but I don’t think I could go a few months without any at all so I compromise and take the essentials when I travel. I would recommend taking neutral colours that go with all your outfits and also avoid anything in powder form – it probably won’t last past the first flight and you will regret it when your backpack is covered in bronzer! Always look for make-up with SPF in it – 2 birds 1 stone! But most importantly you want make-up that stays put even in the most humid of conditions! I have spent the last 15 years or so searching for make-up with staying power and I’m happy to say I’ve had some break throughs recently and so I’ll let you in on these secrets now!

Foundation – AT LAST I’ve found a foundation which actually lasts all day. I’ve even fallen asleep in it before (beauty sin 101) and woke up looking like I’d just done my make-up! Thanks to my lovely friend Lisa who gave me my first Estee Lauder Double wear foundation for my birthday! It’s not cheap at £32 but it’s worth every penny and though it’s a small bottle, I was impressed it lasted almost 4 months! It’s also probably the best colour match I’ve ever had which is no mean feat given how pasty I am! I really cannot rave about this enough! The only downside that I can see is that it’s only SPF 10.

Mascara – I absolutely LOVE Clinique’s High impact curling mascara. It does exactly what it says on the tin but also for travelling, you will need a reliably waterproof mascara. This isn’t branded as waterproof but trust me it is definately is! I was lucky to inherit long eyelashes but this is both a blessing and a curse. In the past I always found that pretty much any mascara left me with panda eyes at the end of the day but not this one!

Eyebrow pencil – Being a blonde, I’ve got fair eyebrows that you can barely see and so I’ve always been on the search for a solution which looks natural and not drawn on. My solution is Benefit’s ‘Gimme Brow.” It tames your existing eyebrow hairs whilst adding subtle microfibres giving you a fuller more defined look – I’m a massive fan!

Lippy – There has been a huge improvement in the staying power of lippies and lip glosses recently but I’m a big fan of Rimmel’s Provocalpse which is marketed as lasting 16 hours. I actually think it’s longer and sometimes I actually struggle to get it off without an oil based make-up remover! My best travel shade is ‘make your move‘ as it’s a good every-day shade.

SPF. I’ve made the mistake of using normal sun cream on my face and the result was so many spots – I looked like I had chicken pox! So now I always use an oil free SPF for face only. I personally like No7 Protect & perfect intense advanced facial suncream with SPF 30. It’s also a bargain! Available from Boots only.

Perfume – no one likes a smelly backpacker! But you don’t want to be weighed down with a heavy perfume bottle! I nipped into Boots and asked for some samples. They are free and the perfect size to fit in your bag without weighing you down! You might have to be less fussy about which type you take but on the plus side you may discover a new perfume to love!

Realistically you’re not going to be able to stick to your full beauty regime so you will probably have to leave your toner’s, exfoliaters and face masks at home! I used to ditch most of this stuff when I travelled but your 30’s are not as kind to your skin as your 20’s so now I travel with a good moisturiser. I’ve just invested in the Number 7 protect and perfect travel kit which has moisturiser and serum in the perfect sized travel bottles which I will be taking to South America.

Face wipes These will be your best friend especially on long dusty journeys! Why not get some exfoliating face wipes (another 2 birds, 1 stone!)

Leave your favourite jewellery at home! You will be able to pick up some great bargain jewellery at markets all around the world and it’s a great momento to take home without taking up much space in your backpack!

Argh the bane of my life! I definitely have a love-hate relationship with my hair! I’ve got long fine hair but lots of it and so me and scarves/hats do NOT get on! I tend to end up with a big matt at the back of my neck! Sexy! Not helped by years of bleaching my hair blonde and my hairdresser despairs every time I tell her how often I go swimming in chlorine! I lust after the sort of hair which dries smooth and without frizz falling into silky waves. I have the waves but I also have frizz and LOTS of it! But I can’t be carrying around my hairdryer or straighteners in my backpack so I’m always looking for a better travel hair solution! In the past I’ve embraced the curl, cut my hair short with lots of layers and just used a bit of frizz ease. It wasn’t great but better than the Hermione-look (otherwise known as the lampshade) when my hair is longer! This time around, determined to keep my long hair, I’m trying something different and I’ll let you know how I get on! I’m giving the Brazilian blow dry a go (not what it sounds!!) It was on offer on Groupon and I’m a sucker for a bargain! Usually about £200 it’s well out of my price range! But on groupon I found a deal for £50 which is less than I pay for a cut and colour so I figured why not?! They infuse keratin into your hair (keratin is what makes straight hair straight) which has the effect of de-frizzing and taming your curls. It’s actually designed to improve the condition of your hair unlike chemical straightening which damages it and whilst it won’t promise you poker straight hair, it is supposed to make hair much more manageable and lasts up to about 3 months. Sounds great to me! Watch this space, I will report back soon!

I always try to take a combination of uber practical but not-so-sexy ‘travel clothes’ and a few nicer outfits. But most importantly you need to keep the amount you take to a miminum. Trust me, you don’t want to have to carry that kitchen sink with you every day! So here you need to master the ‘capsule wardrobe.‘ Basically everything you take should match with everything else. I love patterns and colours so I stick to neutral plain shorts/skirts/trousers/cardi’s and then add a few pretty tops and dresses to jazz things up a bit. Make sure your shoes are incredibly comfy. Wear them in a LOT before you travel with them. Also don’t forget to think about things like the grip on the soles! Have you ever been wearing a pair of lovely flip-flops when suddenly the weather turns and you are slipping and sliding everywhere trying to get to the nearest shelter! Rubber soles or ones with grips are best! I have just bought a pair of UGG sandals. They are incredibly soft and cushioned but have great grip. They did cost a fortune compared to most sandals (£70 gulp) but they are an investment and I’m sure after hours walking around cities in all weathers, I will be super glad I made the splurge! Periods. The bane of our lives – seriously men have it so much easier don’t they?!! As a doctor, I get several consultations a day from women worrying about getting their periods when they are travelling! Especially if they are camping, swimming lots or staying somewhere remote or hiking! So I thought I’d draw upon my experience as a GP and share a few ideas with you. I suggest discussing these options with your own GP if you think your ‘lady time’ might come at a BAD time!

Progestogen only pill ‘The POP.’ This contraceptive pill MIGHT just stop your period altogether! This is not an absolute given so I suggest trying it out for a few months before you go away! I would say about 70-80% of women find their periods disappear altogether though a small minority will find they get erratic periods instead. The downside to this pill when travelling, is you have to take it the same time every day (tricky when you’re crossing time zones) You have a 12 hour window with the newer versions (like Cerelle) and 3 hours with the older generation POPs. Go beyond this window and you’ll be at risk of ‘spotting’ and pregnancy if you are using it as contraception.

The Combined contraceptive pill ‘The COCP.’ This contraceptive pill is a great option. You still have a period albeit usually shorter, lighter and less painful but you will know when it’s going to be as it occurs a few days after you start your 7 day pill-break. You can choose to skip your period altogether by back-to-backing your pill packets (i.e missing your 7 day break.) This makes it a great option for shorter trips of a couple of months or less. The down sides are that it can’t be taken by any one who suffers migraines with aura (sensory disturbance) as it increases the risk of strokes. It also slightly increases your risk of DVT’s so make sure to walk about lots on flights! On the plus side, this pill has a 48 hour window so if you miss one pill but remember at the right time the next day, you will still be covered for contraception. Go beyond 48 hours and you will need extra precautions for a week!

Norethisterone – a form of POP however this is NOT contraception! Taken 3 days before your period is due then 3 times a day until you’re happy for your lady time to arrive! Great for short holidays but not really a good option for longer trips abroad!

The Progestogen only injection ‘The depot.’ Reliable contraception, you don’t need to remember to take a tablet so great for the forgetful! However occasionally women have irregular bleeding on this so try it several months before you travel just in case! Not a good option if you have risk factors for osteoporosis or if you are planning to start a family soon – this can take several months before your fertility bounces back!

Remember none of these options are completely foolproof so make sure you have some feminine hygiene products with you just in case! You don’t want to get caught out somewhere remote!!

Hey how are ya?

Today it’s a bit overcast and dreary in Southern California.

Feels a bit like winter and we are supposed to get more rain this coming week. Boo.

The cold weather makes me miss the nice warm weather we had on our trip to Mexico.

Anyways, here is the summary of our day trip to Puebla.

I’ve wanted to go to Puebla for many years since it’s famous for mole.

It’s also famous for many other things as I learned while I was there!

Mole is one of my favorite Mexican foods. I like the complex blend of spices and flavors it provides. There’s nothing like it.

I’ve had Oaxacan mole and it was quite good, so was excited to finally try the Puebla-style mole (Poblano).

Getting to Puebla from TAPO (Terminal de Autobuses de Pasajeros de Oriente) Mexico City

Our initial plan was to wake up at 6 to get the 7am bus, but we slept in and got the 8am bus instead. (This happens a lot to us when we travel. Does it happen to you?)

It’s pretty unique in appearance. Especially when looking at it from the outside. You wouldn’t expect to see the pretty dome in the center.

Right before we got on the bus we went through the Puebla gate, that said “Que Chula es Puebla!”. Why don’t we have these little setups before getting on our planes and trains? Wouldn’t it make travel a little more fun?

Maybe it reminds me of Disneyland’s It’s a Small World, which used to be one of my favorite rides. :)

The total ride was about two hours including traffic and we got there on schedule.

Unfortunately, the bus ride felt a lot longer than two hours since I was forced to watch Terminator. I was sitting right underneath the speaker. That was the worst part of the trip!! My fault for not bringing my noise canceling headphones.

Once you get out of the station, there are several taxi stands that are located just outside.

Getting to Puebla from the CAPU (Central de Autobuses Puebla) Station

The thing to note is that these taxis have set fares depending on where you want to go. It’s all listed in the window where you get your ticket. No negotiation needed.

Basically you just buy your ticket and you redeem it at the ticket stand next to the taxi queue. Then they give you a little laminated piece of paper which has a number on it and then you give that to your taxi driver and then off you go into the city!

Note- If you do look like a foreigner, people will probably approach you and ask you if you need a taxi. I’d highly recommend you ignore them and go to the official stand. Also, they do have Uber in Puebla, but it was the same price as the taxi. We ended up taking the taxi since it was right there.

Exploring and Eating in Puebla

So, once we got into the city it reminded me a lot of the other smaller cities we had been to in Mexico (e.g. Merida, Oaxaca).

You have your main square which is generally always pretty busy with street vendors in the square and shops that surround it.

We took a few pictures, walked around a little bit, and then eventually made our way to go get some tacos at Las Ranas for lunch.

Las Ranas is famous for al pastor tacos and tacos arabes (al pastor on a pita-like bread rather than tortilla). We got three different tacos and all were very good and filling, but my favorite was the gringa which came with cheese. After we got our tacos that we did some more walking and made our way to another place that I found on seriouseats.

Cemitas del Carmen is known for their cemitas which are sandwiches with meat and shredded Oaxacan cheese. It was a good 15-minute walk away from downtown in a residential area.

It turned out to be just OK. I don’t know if I’d go there again since I didn’t think it was that special. Bummer.

On the way there and on the way back, though, we did get some ice cream and popsicles.

We got a kiwi popsicle and Chongos Zamoranos ice cream at Súper Paletería Mary Barragá. The staff were really nice and gave us a bunch of samples without us even asking.

After we got our goods, we sat at the plaza just across the street to take in the scene. The plaza was very quiet while the ice cream shop kept pretty busy.

As we made our way back to the city, we stopped to get potato chips. People were eating these things all over the city. We didn’t want to feel left out anymore and had to try them.

We got ours spicy with fresh squeezed lime. Very tasty!!

After this we got some more popsicles since we wanted something sweet again.

We seem to eat a lot of junk food when we travel don’t we. :D

After our second popsicle stop, we gradually meandered over to the arts district in the South part of the city.

The arts district is pretty nice. It’s relatively quiet and has brightly colored buildings that make you feel like you are in Mexico.

There were also quite a few art galleries with artists working inside. So if you have a lot of time, you can stop by and have a chat or ask them about their work.

All of these galleries are concentrated within one block and right next door to this area was a shopping area, which looked to be mostly touristy stuff like souvenirs etc.

Our last stop before dinner was visiting Calle de los Dulces or sweets street.

The street is famous because there are a bunch of candy shops there. To my surprise, the whole street was actually was filled with candy shops!

I thought there would only be a handful, but the whole street on both sides had only candy shops.

We got a sugar cookie at one of them and then at another we got a small box of camotes (flavored sweet potato bars) to take home.

After visiting the candy shops, we made our way back to the square to hang out before dinner.

We had reservations for El Mural de los Poblanos which seemed to be the most promising restaurant for dinner based on the reviews.

In the end, I thought it was all right. I don’t think I would go there again. Especially since it was kind of expensive for what we got.

Service was good and the clientele was a good mix of Mexican families and foreigners.

After dinner, we just grabbed an Uber to the bus station.

Mayordomo

When we arrived earlier, I spied a Mayodomo in the station.

Mayordomo is a great place to get a Mexican hot chocolate and mole to take home, if you are interested in those kind of things.

I first found out about this place when I was in Oaxaca, where they had locations all over the city. The last time I went there I bought a bunch of different moles and a kilo of Mexican hot chocolate to take home. They blend your hot chocolate mix to your liking (cinnamon, almonds, sugar etc), which is how I got the kilo in case your were wondering.

I ate all the mole, but still have quite a lot of hot chocolate.

This trip, though, I bought some mole, but it got confiscated at airport security when we were going to Guadalajara. I didn’t get to bring any back.

The security said I can bring powdered mole, but not pastes on the plane. So keep that in mind if you aren’t checking your bags and flying domestically in Mexico. I guess it’s the same as it is here.

So that was our day trip to Puebla!

Puebla was very walkable and overall felt a lot more relaxed than Mexico City.

Next time I go back, I would definitely stay at least one night in Puebla (two full days) because there is a lot to see and eat.

We were on the fence whether or not to stay a night there since we weren’t sure if we’d like it. But we do and now we know!!

There are also small towns just outside of Puebla which you can visit too, like Cholula.

Didn’t know about that one until I looked at the map. :)

Porto is – well deserved – being named as one of the hottest cities in Europe to visit. And with good reason! This trendy city has great architecture, cool cocktail bars, lots of charm, a long history and excellent shopping. Oh yeah: and Port Wine too!

Budget airlines have made this overlooked gem very popular among weekend tourists, as it’s actually quite easy to navigate and take in the most important sites in no time. But let’s save you some valuable time. I bet you would rather use the time stretching your legs in a café sipping a PortoTonic than killing your feet walking in vain.

In the map below we have drawn up the main tourist, shopping and nightlife areas in Porto, added our favourites and plotted in the Best Photo Spots. Just to make sure, you don’t miss out on the most important sites of the city. Click on the coloured areas or Points of Interests for a swift presentation.

Let’s quickly introduce the areas:

Tourist areas

The main tourist area is the Ribeira down at the Douro river. If you’re looking for an authentic experience or an undiscovered restaurant, look elsewhere. However, the area is full of life around the clock and is one of the best places to enjoy the sun and watch to world go by.

Of course, a Cathedral is always a no-miss in a historical city such as Porto. When you add the Episcopal Palace and the Tourist Office to the equation, this result is, that this area should be one of the first you visit.

Rua das Flores connects the Ribeira tourist area with the hip bar and nightlife area of Cedofeita and is filled with cafés, shops and sights. Between the Ribeira and Rua das Flores you’ll find the extraordinary Palacio Bolsa – the former Exchange – with an eclectic interior architecture. Just next to the Palacio is the Port & Douro Wines Institute – a really good place to start if you’re at all curious about wines in general and Port Wine in particular. It has a small but interactive – and free – museum, a Port Wine shop and Port Wine sampling. A great place to find out, if you want to dive deeper into the world of Port Wine on the other side of the river.

Port Wine area

Fun fact is, that the Port Wine producers are actually not located in Porto – they’re based in Vila Nova de Gaia on the other side of the Douro river. Here, you can choose a Tour of the Cellars and Port Wine tasting between a wide range of producers. Everyone have their own favourite.

We can recommend Graham’s Lodge which also has a wonderful restaurant with amazing views to the river and Porto. It’s quite a hike though, so if you’re not up to burn some calories, settle for Sandemann or one of the others at the riverside. A tour and decent tasting will cost from 20€ and up, if you want to try at least 5 different Ports. The higher the price the better the Ports. They’re not trying to rip you off – there’s a price difference whether the port has aged 10 or 40 years. You have rental costs too, yeah?

When you’ve done your tasting and found your favourite Port, you can buy it in the shop – or take a set back home and do a Port Wine Tasting with your friends!

Vila Nova de Gaia is the city on the other side of the Douro river and home to all Port producers

You don’t have to go to Vila Nova de Gaia to experience Port. The Institute of Wines of Douro and Porto has a museum, tastings and a shop!

Shopping areas

If you want to bring home with you more than a bottle of Port, you’ve come to the right place! If all my clothes and shoes were stolen or went up in smoke (I might consider that now), I would go to Porto to restock my wardrobe. They have the same High Street fashions brands as everywhere else on Rua Santa Catarina – the main pedestrianised shopping street – but there are lots of other areas, where you can make a bargain or purchase something special no-one has back home. When you’re done browsing Santa Catarina for the same stuff you probably have back home, head to Mercado do Bolhão. They have the cheapest bargains in town and sell souvenirs, vegetables, fish and everything in between.

The area around the Clerigos Tower (you can use the baroque tower as a point of orientation when strolling the streets) features a mix of more expensive brands and quirky shops, like A Vida Portuguesa where you can buy Portuguese products. And visit the unique Art Nouveau bookshop Livraria Lello, that looks like something from a Harry Potter movie (check out our Guide to Art Nouveau in Porto, if you’re into the fin-de siecle architecture).

Rua de Cedofeita is another pedestrianised shopping street, but this one is characterised by lesser-known brands and you’re more likely to find a bargain here, than at Rua Santa Catarina. The street is not that long, and from here, you can enter another shopping experience by walking into

Travessa Cedofeita and Rua de Conceicao, where you have trendy vintage stores, old comic book shops, a wooden bike store and boutique fashion shops. This is the area to visit, if you want to find some peculiar, unique or extraordinary. But hurry and check them out. They might not be there tomorrow!

In the pedestrian Rua Santa Catarina you’ll find your well-known High Street brands

Mercado do Bolhao is the cheapest place to buy souvenirs, fish, fruits – and everything in between!

Old charm meets the latest fashion in Porto

Rua de Conceicao offers trendy vintage stores, old comic book shops and boutique fashion shops

Step into A Vida Portuguesa and take a look at the industrial interior

Livraria Lello has an entrance fee, but it’s subtracted from your purchase in the bookshop

Restaurants, Bars and Nightlife

We end our guide with a recommendation to explore the area between the Clerigos tower and Aliados avenue to find cheaper and trendier restaurants than by the Ribeira. Especially around Galeria de Paris you’ll find cool cocktail bars and quirky cafés lie side by side. You’ll not get very far if you start pubcrawling in this lively area, that really comes to life after 21.00.

Try the 2,5€ brunch at Galeria de Paris with the museum-like interior, a 6€ mojito at the cool Baixa bar and a 3€ Gin and Tonic at Era uma vez en Paris, where it feels to be inside a Twin Peaks movie. In a good way!!
