THIRD PLACE ROUND - Jiang Cheng vs Wen Kexing
Tumblr media
The battle for third place is between Jiang Cheng (shixiong: Wei Wuxian) from Mo Dao Zu Shi and Wen Kexing (shixiong: Zhou Zishu) from Word of Honor
Propaganda under the cut
Wen Kexing:
(okay so the canon part is confusing. cause wenzhou are officially canon in Faraway Wanderers and are censored bromance in Word of Honor. but they're only shixiong/shidi in Word of Honor and not in Faraway Wanderers. so idk what you want to do in regards to the canonicity of their relationship)
I mean Wen Kexing is all over Zhou Zishu from day 1, though he has very complicated emotions surrounding the whole shixiong/shidi element to their relationship, he does eventually declare himself as the second disciple of Shiji Manor and publicly acknowledges Zhou Zishu as his shixiong. anyways if you know anything about Wen Kexing you know how desperately he wants Zhou Zishu, even the censorship couldn't hide the fact that Wen Kexing wants to rail Zhou Zishu to kingdom come
the utter simp that is WKX for his ZZS? No contest. None. None at all.
#WKX now actually fucked his shixiong like pls the entire book/show is about him wanting to get with him
#WKX hands down wanna fck or get fcked by his “Ah-Xu~” from day 1
#y'all have the audacity. as if Wen Kexing did baby trap is shixiong with TWO kids
Jiang Cheng:
Clinged to WWX constantly for 7+ years, wanted to have WWX as his right hand man forever after becoming sect leader, cried after WWX left, cried when he discovered what WWX sacrificed for him, was TORN APART when it got explained to him that if they were more outwardly close knit, WWX might not have died
PROPAGANDA!! to start, i'm still very bitter about how fairy lost the sentient animal poll and i want to win this badly. very very badly. current stats are 50.6 in favour of jc but that's too less of a gap for me. jc should be winning this by a landslide, y'all hear me? anyways. starting with a class act, like the clown i am->

a few links ( because i'm chengxian trash, as always and i'd love if poll-guy could copy paste them on the og post): one, two, three, four (gif), five, six, seven (gif), eight (thoughts on different wavelengths), the absolute circles of them saving each other, the fucking golden core reveal scene. golden scene reveal part 2, jiang cheng will always forgive wei wuxian
to start with. jiang cheng is literally the picture of "i knew from the moment i met you that i'd spend a lifetime forgiving you".
the earliest dynamic of jiang cheng and wei wuxian is jiang cheng giving away his dogs (the only gift his father has ever given him, btw) because wei wuxian is scared of the dogs. tis only the start of it.
his father very obviously prefers his shixiong over him, his mother berates him for not being as good as wei wuxian and tells him his inheritance is in danger, and his sister (in my opinion) has more care for him (visibly. maybe jiang yanli doesn't show it because jc is an emotionally complicated purple grape, maybe because jc doesn't need it, or wei wuxian is traumatised but that's my opinion). but still. still. Jiang Cheng loves Wei Wuxian. so much. jealousy is like. the most tame response i can think of. and jiang cheng is proud of wei wuxian, okay? he'd believe his big brother if he'd said anything. want proof? well, here you go-> link
to paraphrase the link:
Jiang Cheng had just lost his family, his home, and his very golden core, and his older brother - his brilliant older brother who could fix anything, who could sneak wine into Cloud Recesses and defeat an ancient turtle nearly-god and make Jiang Cheng share a smile when Jiang Cheng’s mother was disappointed and furious at both of them - His big brother smiled and said, “I can fix this.”And Jiang Cheng believed him then, and believed him three months later when Wei Wuxian crawled out of the Burial Mounds (just the second miracle in three months), and believed him every day of the next seventeen(?) years until the pieces were shoved into place for him to see.
also. the circle these two go in protecting each other. (gif set by @sandushengshou), the 'if one of us is to die, then, i beg, let it be me' that they both do for one another in a seemingly neverending loop of sacrifice. via this post a la my lovely @backtoyunmeng

64.media.tumblr.com
64.media.tumblr.com
jiang cheng is a cannonically ruined woman archetype, justified via the countless posts you'll get in the top posts of jiang cheng tag. he keeps chenqing, wwx's flute in perfect condition even when he hates wei wuxian, even when wwx, if only indirectly, has a part in jiang yanli's murder and oof okay someone pointed out to him that he's known to have killed wei wuxian and he almost cries. he absolutely believes, with his whole heart, that wei wuxian lives even when the world is sure he doesnt. and it always read to me like, i'd know if he was dead. he's a part of my soul, so i'd know if he was dead. he can't be dead.
this is getting too long, so, to sum up, some absolute poetry by @jiangchengsjawline

#hello?? the answer is Jiang cheng pls#he's the shixiongfucker or all shixiong fucker you wish you could be as pathetically in love with your shixiong as he is#chengxian
#i do not go here (chengxian) but the propaganda is incredibly correct they are insane abt each other#also sorry jiang cheng ik you're suffering but they are so funny to me#neway VOTE JIANG CHENG FOR CLEAR SKIN
#look I rarely go here#(here being chengxian)#but by GOD their lvoe compels me#they’re tragic and doomed and they love each other without knowing how to say it in words the other would understand#or in words at all because communication??? we don’t know her???

is this not convincing->

#had to vote jc though i have more feelings about chengxian#i think jc should have a huge gege kink
#like. jiang cheng should win the entire tournament hands down period
#jiang cheng#is the only correct answer in my gay little brain#i’m sure everyone else’s shixiong fuckers are great too#but jiang cheng is MY favorite#tumblr polls#mdzs#if chengxian fucked in canon it would make everything about their situation at least 65% less complicated you can’t change my mind

2023 "To Read" List [updating]
This is less of a "to read" list that I'm try to work through and more of a compilation of recommendations that I find interesting. Definitely something that would likely be longer rather shorter by end of the year.
My current plan is to add and rearrange new titles as needed, but new additions will be annotated [NEW]. If I finish a title in 2023 , I can cross it off (yay dopamine!) and keep it on the list, because recording that once in my reading log list just isn't enough.
Titles in each category are roughly arranged for "priority," like, very roughly.
Historical & Wuxia
Probably my favorite genre, dating back to my childhood watching period dramas growing up in China. Sometimes I want to wrack my brains figuring out all the details in intricate political plots. Sometimes I want to escape to a fantastical adventures with swords and long-flowing robes. I love everything here.
杀破狼 priest -- Sha Po Lang -- Part of me is like trying to "save" this fic for when I feel like I invest sufficient attention and emotion in it, since it's like one of the most recommended titles in my favorite genre.
无双 梦溪石 -- Peerless
乱世为王 顾雪柔 --To Rule in a Turbulent World -- [finished about 2/5 and paused]
一剑霜寒 语笑阑珊 -- A Sword of Frost -- this title is one of the first overwhelming recommendations I got when I started reading danmei, but somehow I still haven't read anything by this author
暴君[重生] 漫漫何其多
江湖遍地是奇葩 语笑阑珊 -- Everywhere in Jianghu is Wonderful
督主有病 杨溯 -- Governor’s Illness
帝王攻略 语笑阑珊 -- The Emperor's Stratagem
山有木兮 非天夜翔 -- Shan You Mu Xi -- Can't help but be curious after Joyful Reunion
鹰奴 非天夜翔 -- Yingnu
江东双璧 非天夜翔 -- Twin Jades of Jiangdong
逐王 水千丞 -- The Blood Crown
Xianxia & Historical Fantasy
I think of Xianxia as my "home" in danmei, since I started in the genre with mxtx books, but since you need to keep track of the fantasy world building components as well as the historical ones, most of these are not easy reads you can sneak in for a quick break during busy days.
六爻 priest
余污 肉包不吃肉 -- I have been told this is not a bad way to get a sense of Meatbun's style without committing to the monstrosity (wordcount-wise) that is 2Ha
魔尊也想知道 青色羽翼 -- Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know -- [1/10 progress, paused]
天宝伏妖录 非天夜翔 -- Tianbao Fuyao Lu
定海浮生录 非天夜翔 -- Dinghai Fusheng Records
Actors/Celebrities
I find this genre very easy to read because they share many of the same world-building elements, and I enjoy themes of balancing public vs private identities, which all of us do to some extent in our daily lives.
台风眼 潭石
营业悖论 稚楚
2401 功夫包子
明日星程 金刚圈
内娱第一花瓶 三三娘
空降热搜 颜凉雨
设之王 娜可露
Modern (General)
Includes genres like mystery, E-sports, romance, etc. I may have the highest expectation of this genres because it's too easy for it to feel "not real enough"
AWM[绝地求生] 漫漫何其多-- AWM[PUBG] -- [In progress 1/10] The most recommended E-sports novel, to the extent I feel bad I didn't start with this one.
火焰戎装 水千丞 -- Blazing Armor
燎原 不问三九-- [In progress 3/5] "Mature men in love," fans say.
纸飞机 潭石
过门 Priest
皮囊 潭石
附加遗产 水千丞 -- supposedly one of the best 188 novels in terms of quality,
犯罪心理 长洱 -- fun fact: I found out that for a long time before 2017, this was by far the most popular danmei on JJWXC, and it's still one of the Big Three Mystery Novels along with Modu and Poyun.
沉舟 楚寒衣青 -- in progress 1/5. I'm fascinated by what appears to be the only well-know story (or just the only one left?) that focuses on elite Chinese politics, which of course, has gotten a lot less fun and safe and speculate about since then.
你的距离 公子优
年花 静水边
大哥 Priest
荣光[电竞] 龙柒 -- wait this has one million + words?
邪门的爱情出现了 丧心病狂的瓜皮 (ABO)
Urban Fantasy, Infinity Flow & Quick Transmigration
The "Modern but with magic" or "Modern but multiple stories in one story" genre.
不要在垃圾桶里捡男朋友 骑鲸南去
薄雾[无限] 微风几许
烈火浇愁 Priest
判官 木苏里
纸片恋人 楚寒衣青
病案本 肉包不吃肉
BE狂魔求生系统 稚楚
我五行缺你 西子绪
步天纲 梦溪石
全球高考 木苏里
Science Fiction
"More in the future than Modern" or "Apocalypse".
小蘑菇 一十四洲
残次品 Priest
一级律师[星际] 木苏里
不死者 淮上
日落大道 卡比丘
寒武再临 水千丞
2013 非天夜翔
High School & Campus Romance
This is the genre I'm least likely to read, but since these titles come up in so many recommendations ....
某某 木苏里
好运时间 卡比丘
可爱过敏原 稚楚
我喜欢你的信息素 引路星
信息素说我们不可能 毛球球
撒野 巫哲
轻狂 巫哲
Non-Danmei
三体 刘慈欣
重生之将门毒后 千山茶客
北城天街 非天夜翔* -- I'm unsure if this should be thought of as danmei or a "serious" novel, but I've been told to brace for tears
Notes/Remarks
Science Fiction is the only genre on my list (in the beginning) that includes the original "Big Four of JJWXC": Feitian Yexiang, Shui Qian Cheng, Priest, Huai Shang, unless I also merge the two historical genres.

Note
Hihi! I've noticed some CQL fic recently about class conflict / revolution of the working class against an elite class of cultivators. This idea is intriguing and I think I've seen it executed well, but I also know that cultivator's practices are tied deeply to religion + Daoism so it seems like cultivators are generally pretty well respected in society. Class definitely comes forward as a theme in CQL though, and non-cultivators (e.g. Dafan Wens) clearly do suffer from the war in CQL. 1/2
2/2 I guess I'm wondering to what extent the idea of non-cultivators leading a class revolution feels like a more modern take vs smth that might conceivably happen in a historical Chinese setting. (Based on what happens with Xie Lian in the TGCF novel I feel like a class revolt might happen in MXTX's xianxia worlds at least). I know this is complex but I'd love to hear your thoughts if you're interested in this topic and care to share them. Thanks for your wonderful blog! sorry this is so longgg
hooooooo okay, okay where to begin with this
so first of all, I’m going to link you to @pumpkinpaix’s most excellent meta on class dynamics in MDZS, because she carries this fandom on her goddamn back and holds the brain cell that I certainly do not have
secondly, I’m going to re-link this post on the ahistoricity of cql, because it is, in fact, very important to me that people do not try to read CQL as a historical text in any way, shape, or form
thirdly, so, okay. before we talk about class or class conflict or the revolution of the proletariat or whatever, I want to point out that this story is 架空 jiakong -- it’s built on thin air. I make jokes about the inconsistency of the worldbuilding all the time, but I’m also a Cosmere fan with unrealistic standards for worldbuilding and at the end of the day they’re jokes. But to try and read class conflict into CQL is premised on the assumption that there’s like, a system in place that is premised on the oppression of the working class and a functional economy that keeps this society running. What is this economy? Who is this working class? Hell if I know! They pay each other with rocks spray-painted a shiny gold and we don’t question it.
oh, we can theorize all day about feudal systems of taxation and protection, or guess at the going price of evil-warding talismans, but at the end of the day, neither the author nor the showrunners felt the need to build an extensively detailed class system into this world. and why should they? that’s not the focus of the story; just the general strokes of a nebulously-familiar setting will suffice.
this isn’t to say class isn’t a major theme in CQL, since it’s literally like, the crux of Jin Guangyao’s character (again, please read that meta by @pumpkinpaix, it’s so good), but like. to talk about class conflict and revolution? feels like we need to get much further in the weeds about, like, economic structural inequality built into the fabric of this society. and to me, that feels like fumbling around in the dark, because there isn’t?? really??? a historical??? analog???? to cultivators????
look, this is xianxia. this is a fundamentally fantastic text. cultivators as a class (hah) of people amalgamate this strange chimera of Daoist priest and warrior-mercenary and landed gentry and wandering scholar that is very much a staple of the wuxia / xianxia genres, but not particularly applicable to history. so the idea of a “working class rebelling against an elite class of cultivators” simply does not have a handy historical analogue to point at because cultivators--in the form of this structured, organized, jianghu sect hierarchy--did not exist???
(honestly, the closest counterpart I can think of is--hilariously--season 1 of The Legend of Korra, which attempts to deal with the societal inequality of benders and non-benders. but like. does Korra handle that well? anyway)
and before anyone tries to make the argument that the cultivational sects map onto the imperial government--they do not. They simply Do Not. If you think so, then you have not confronted the Bureaucratic Majesty/Nightmare of imperial Chinese government.
here’s the thing about most wuxia / xianxia / Chinese period dramas as a whole--they’re never actually about the “common people.” Your main character is always going to be the member of some elite class, or marry into the elite class, or have Magical Powers Conferred Upon Them and thereby become elite. The genre is simply uninterested in the dynamics of class beyond its effects on a character’s backstory. The reality of it is simply that working class life in ancient China rarely gets made into 50-episode dramas. At the very least, I’ve never seen one.
if we want to look at peasant rebellions in Chinese history, they are often about changing the people in positions of power rather than the systems that impose said power. The dynastic system lasted for millennia because every time there was a successful uprising, the people who led that revolution proceeded to put themselves in the positions of power in that very same system, and the one time the revolution led to a systemic change in governance--
I will never be paid enough to talk about 20th century Chinese history, but if you’re looking for historical analogues of class revolution, you’re welcome to confront the bloody wasteland that is 20th century China
class in ancient China is complicated; class in dynastic China is complicated; class in 20th century China is (hoo buddy) complicated; class in 21st century China is (yells) complicated. Which is a roundabout way of getting to your question of:
I guess I'm wondering to what extent the idea of non-cultivators leading a class revolution feels like a more modern take vs smth that might conceivably happen in a historical Chinese setting.
Not only does this feel like a modern take, this feels like a very Western take; I don’t think Western concepts of class awareness and conflict map easily across national and cultural borders, but I don’t have the requisite knowledge to give you a more nuanced understanding of how or why exactly. That... would be the subject of a dissertation, not a tumblr post.
You did bring up TGCF, and I do want to point out that the fall of Xianle is also... not a product of class conflict, necessarily speaking. It’s the product of 1) a refugee crisis, 2) multiple natural disasters, 3) the literal hand of fate. I think MXTX incorporates themes of class into her works, but her books tend to be much more focused on the development of an individual character in the face of hardship and opposition, rather than the role of an individual in society and the individual’s obligation to contribute to said society. I could write several hundred words on Xie Lian and his relationship to “the greater good,” but that belongs in a wholly different meta and a complete separate blog. I think it’s quite important that, again and again, we see that the ‘happy ending’ MXTX bestows upon her main characters is not “and then they get into politics and reform society to bring the greatest good to all!” but rather “and then they live in a house with the love of their life in quiet, domestic bliss, away from the politics that caused them so much pain and suffering.” To me, that indicates the author’s interest in personal and emotional development of characters rather than commenting on class conflict/class revolution in ahistorical fantasy China as a whole.
Again! I’m not trying to be prescriptive. I’m not saying that people can’t flesh out the worldbuilding and create incredible works of transformative fanwork that speculate on the nature of class conflict and revolution in a fantasy society. If that’s your speed, all the power to you! That sounds like a truly terrifying amount of thought and research, godspeed.

oh jun wu, what’s the matter with you?
I’m still falling asleep thinking about TGCF. It’s REALLY rare that a work does this to me. I’m forgetting details, but I can’t read it again because I did not make good life decisions while in the midst of reading it the first time. But one thing that I think about a lot, that I think is part of what makes TGCF so interesting for me is Jun Wu. I am definitely bringing a western perspective, and I read a translation and not the original. I bring this up with Jun Wu because I think the villain is especially interesting commentary on what people do wrong in their lives. I think without Jun Wu, TGCF is an AMAZING romance, but wouldn’t have been quite so epic and breath-taking.
You don’t get to really understand what MXTX is building with Jun Wu until Book 4 and Book 5, so I’m adding a cut.
I gotta say straight out, that I love when a villain architects their own defeat and I love MXTX because Jun Wu did it twice. He did it the first time by not letting or asking for help saving his people. By being determined on only 1 path forward and no others. By doubling down when things weren’t going how he had planned with the bridge. I, in my very different cultural background from the original author, think that the novel says Jun Wu potentially could have saved the day for his people if, 1 he’d told them what he was trying to do and why he thought this would work and how long it was going to take, 2 he’d worked with his 4 priests instead of against them, 3 if he’d gotten over his damn self and planned for a worst case scenario. (the novel might not suggest point 3 really, it might just be my own experience talking)
But definitely Jun Wu created Xie Lian, but not in the way he’d hoped. If it hadn’t been for Jun Wu’s own priest becoming Xie Lian’s head priest because Xie Lian reminded the priest (whose name is (did we even learn his name) is escaping me) of Jun Wu, Xie Lian wouldn’t have been able to bring him down. If it hadn’t been for Jun Wu noticing Xie Lian, Xie Lian wouldn’t have become immortal. Xie Lian wouldn’t have had Rouye. Xie Lian wouldn’t have had the 100 fatal stabs by people he was trying to save and thus gotten his straw hat. Xie Lian wouldn’t have hit rock bottom and lost the last vestiges of his false pride and sense of self and spent 800 years being the scrap immortal. If it wasn’t for Jun Wu, would would Hua Cheng have been *that* desperate for Xie Lian when they finally ended up together? Would Hua Cheng’s belief and devotion been nearly so fervent and fanatical?
If if not for ALL of that, Xie Lian and Hua Cheng and the scooby gang would never have defeated Jun Wu.
I believe Hua Cheng would have loved Xie Lian for sure. There’s a lot about who they both are that comes across that makes that believable all on its own. But some of the scars Hua Cheng and Xie Lian both bear are absolutely from Jun Wu’s own making.
So yeah, I love that, to me, it seems obvious that MXTX is basically shaking her head going “omg Jun Wu, what the fuck. why you gotta do this to yourself over and over?” He’s a villain because he can’t fucking get over himself. I even love that his defeat is basically him being like... maybe I was wrong. Maybe all of this was wrong. And he doesn’t even really die. He’s just kinda put in the immortal version of serious time-out.
And this. This is where I think Xie Lian becomes my second favorite character ever (second only to Hua Cheng). Book 4 is so fucking painful because it’s about a character realizing that if the choice is between his own belief in himself and other people’s suffering, he’s gonna realize that it takes more than him and that he can be a massive fuck up. He finally gets to the point where he’s BEGGING for other people to show him the good in humanity and he doesn’t wait for some huge gesture. He gets the little moments, both shitty and good, and is like, fuck it. Yep. This is enough. This is what I want out of life. I want millions and millions of little moments and helping people with them. This is what I know I can do. He learns almost the opposite of what Jun Wu is trying to push him towards.
Granted, Xie Lian watches Hua Cheng, even if he doesn’t know it’s Hua Cheng, sacrifice himself to save Xie Lian and all the people from Xie Lian’s mistake, but I think that was part of the lesson.
This is a very incoherent post, but life has kept me from posting this for much longer than I wanted so I’m going to beg forgiveness to anyone that bothers to read it.
At some point I kind wish someone would contrast what happens to Jun Wu vs what happens to Shi Wudu/Lord Water Master. I don’t feel capable. I’m not sure there’s MEANT to be a contrast, but I think it’s fascinating. At some point I’m going to write more about Hua Cheng and Xie Lian though. Because I’m a massive romance reader and their romance is epic on so many levels.

GRAND FINAL - Fei Du vs Quan Yizhen
Tumblr media
The final match to determine the Ultimate Shixiongfucker is between Fei Du (shixiong: Luo Wenzhou) from Mo Du vs Quan Yizhen (shixiong: Yin Yu) from Heaven Official's Blessing
Propaganda under the cut
Fei Du:
Fei Du: evidence? The entirety of Mo Du. His shixiong is is Luo Wenzhou, a dude with an eight-pack and parents who love him and love fei du as well, and a dude whom fei du is willing to not die/consider the future with, and consider himself not a monster to be with. Fei Du says shixiong to Luo Wenzhou so flirtatiously that they both stop and stare. Luo Wenzhou gets him birthday cake, a video game when he was small and a promise. (Also, they are cat parents)
Tumblr media
If, like me, you go feral over ships where one of them is like this, then vote Fei Du!
#vote for fei du#the man who actually did fuck his shixiong despite all his best efforts to push him away
#vote fei du!!#who actually did fuck his shixiong#fei du died saving lwz
#anyway yeah vote fei du. for the suffering luo wenzhou had to go through when a slutty rich twink began to call him 'shixiong~'
How could I see these tags and not post a greatest hits compilation of Fei Du's "shixiong~~" moments!
Fei Du paused; then some mood caused him to add, “Shixiong.”  Luo Wenzhou: “…”  How could he use such an ordinary tone of voice to speak such an ordinary form of address and yet make it sound so sexual? It was really incomprehensible.
In this small place, where every breath and bowel movement could be heard, Mr. Fei, who was so close to him, didn’t open his mouth when he had something to say; he had to use the office’s WiFi to send him a WeChat message: “Shixiong, can I take you out tonight?”  Luo Wenzhou looked up at him. Fei Du seemed to be focused on the screen of his laptop; if not for the suspicious trace of a smile at the corners of his lips, he would have looked absolutely upright and proper.  The “upright and proper” Mr. Fei moved his fingers, and another WeChat message appeared in front of Luo Wenzhou’s eyes.  He said: “I like your abs.”
Fei Du sighed gently. “Shixiong, I’m going to love you until you can’t escape.”
Seeing that, after going inside with the box of cured meat in one hand and the clanking bicycle under the other arm, Luo Wenzhou still showed no signs of ceasing hostilities, Fei Du, without any warning, suddenly hugged him, kissing him like a surprise attack, this time saying the proper lines. “Shixiong, I was wrong.”  “…” Luo Wenzhou kept his face as stern as possible, but his voice relaxed uncontrollably. “Don’t give me that.”  Fei Du lowered his head slightly, burying his face against his neck. He thought about it, then said, “Can I make it up to you with my body?”
Fei Du laughed quietly, pecking at the most sensitive place at the base of his ear, his other hand untucking Luo Wenzhou’s shirt. “I just got a scare. Shouldn’t you make it up to me, shixiong? My technique really is very good. Just try it, I guarantee…”
He was so angry he was incoherent, forgetting how to speak.  Fei Du, stunned, blinked his eyes, then took Luo Wenzhou’s hand with the veins standing out on it in both of his hands, brought his palms together, and curved his peach blossom eyes in a roguish manner. “Shixiong, I love you.”  Luo Wenzhou: “…”
Tumblr media
additional fei du propaganda: (almost) every time he calls luo wenzhou shixiong
Quan Yizhen:
Obsessed with his shixiong, much to said shixiong's chagrin. Someone who's a proper quanyin shipper can write better propaganda, but I just know he belongs here
Someone who's a proper quanyin shipper can write better propaganda
Well, okay. So Quan Yizhen was originally a street kid that was taken in as a disciple by the sect master at Yin Yu's (the shixiong in question) request because he was impressed by Yizhen's potential. But all the other disciples hated Quan Yizhen's guts due to a mix of his utter inability to read social cues and envy towards his raw talent, only Yin Yu was nice to him which is why Quan Yizhen's obsession with his shixiong took off. Yin Yu is the only person Quan Yizhen cares for.
Eventually his cultivation led Yin Yu to ascend to godhood and he took Quan Yizhen to heaven with him as a deputy god because he knew he couldn't leave him alone. Quan Yizhen doesn't care about prestige, he only cares about martial arts and shixiong, so he asks Yin Yu if they can't go back and if ascension is really that great to which Yin Yu replies to give it a try: Quan Yizhen does and actually ascends as a proper god.
However because Quan Yizhen is so naturally talented he quickly came to eclipse Yin Yu, which he didn't even realize because, again, he has zero social skills. This festered resentment in Yin Yu who eventually exploded and told Quan Yizhen to go kill himself... while Yizhen was wearing a robe that made him follow all fo Yin Yu's commands, so he almost does kill himself. He was stopped and Yin Yu was thrown out of heaven.
But!!! Quan Yizhen doesn't care about any of that! He still wants to meet his shixiong and is sure it was all a misunderstanding. Quan Yizhen actually beats up his own devotees if they trash talk his shixiong, nevermind that as a god his existance is dependant on said devotees. But he doesn't care about that! He only became a god because of shixiong.
When he finally meets his shixiong again, he recognizes him by Yin Yu's mannerism despite Yin Yu wearing a mask. Yin Yu hits him on the head with a shovel and he still doesn't care!! Quan Yizhen still follows his shixiong like a loyal puppy. When later Yin Yu dies trying to protect him Quan Yizhen cries and apologizes for not being able to protect him despite only being good for fighting. Quan Yizhen carries his shixiong's corpse all the way while heaven if falling apart. The last chapter implies Quan Yizhen is trying to nurture Yin Yu's soul to get him back and in the post-canon extras Yin Yu makes a cameo. So Quan Yizhen was succesful!! Death can't take him from his shixiong!
give it to quan yizhen!!!! his whole THING is unconditional love for his shixiong. No matter what Yin Yu does, qyz will love him forever!!
#i will not have my boy who literally calls out SHIXIONG any time he sees yin yu#and desperately chases after him even after everything#lose like this
#yall better give this to quan yizhen#if there's ever a shixiong fucker IT'S HIM
#yes!!!!!!!!#quanyin#he loves him so much!! it’s unconditional!!#vote qyz#tgcf#svsss
#quan yizhen is a real deal shixiongfucker#admit that every time you see his name you're screaming “shixiong!!!!!” reflexively in your head#polls
#qyz propaganda: wdym this guy was ready to kill and be killed for his shixiong#qyz is the most precious#he fights his worshippers if they talk shit about his shixiong#never minds the fact that said shixiong nearly got him killed#THE SUN AND MOON PAIRING#he's the epitome of head empty only shixiong

Ancient China’s fantastic beasts and how to call them (p1)
So I’ve been re-reading my favourite Chinese novels (mainly MXTX and other danmei) using the English translations available online in order to talk about them to non-Chinese speaking friends. First of all, I have to give lots and lots thanks to the fan translators who took out a lot of time to translate and bring these novels to others who don’t speak Chinese, especially considering Chinese is not particularly an easy language to translate to English at all. However, in regards to how certain fantasy entities are often defined in Chinese, some of the English translations that I came across didn’t feel quite right to me. Therefore, here’s a (very limited) intro post I thought I’d make.
Disclaimer/disclosure: Chinese is actually my third language, but the language and culture share tons of similarity with my mother tongue (English is my 2nd, of course), so I was raised surrounded by Chinese culture and literary works. I am, however, a STEM kid through and through, so I honestly have no formal education of Chinese linguistics, and whatever I write here is based on my experience with the words/tropes as well as colloquial uses. I’ll refer to some Western mythology later in comparison as well, and I have even less experience with that outside of reading some Homer and fantasy books. Hence, I welcome any and all criticisms.
In this post, I’ll just identify some differences between 妖魔鬼怪 - yao, mo, gui, guai, respectively. While they are often used together as a phrase to denote supernatural presence (negatively) in general, each word actually denotes a different type of beings. Do note that authors are at full creative liberty to depict these beings however they want in their novels, similar to how things like vampires, witches, and werewolves can be different in different adaptations (sometimes wildly so - Draculas vs. Edward Cullen anyone?). Below are just some common understanding of the terms, that is, what I would picture in my mind when reading the words without the authors’ explanation.
Let’s start with the easiest type to explain - 妖, yao. Yao is used to describe things or living beings that can turn into human form. Similar to how humans can cultivate natural energy around us to increase our power/lifespan (see: Mo Dao Zu Shi), there is a belief that other living and non-living beings can cultivate energy to turn themselves into human forms. (As to why they would want to be human, well, we like to think ourselves as the superior existence, heh.) These human forms then often possess supernatural powers, most likely closely linked to their natural form. For example, a non-sentient tree or rock can cultivate enough to turn into a human if they are placed in a sacred place, or have ‘listened’ to lectures by some masters of cultivation over a long period of time. A tree that can turn human, for example is called 树妖, shu (tree) yao. Probably the most popular characters in folklore stories is the fox spirit, or kitsune (Japanese), or the 狐妖, hu yao, with 狐 (hu) is a fox. Aside from the suffix -yao, these types of creatures can be described with the suffix -jing, eg. 狐狸精, 树精. The word jing means to understand, to be aware, ergo fit to describe a yao. The closest translation would probably be the were creatures, werewolf, were-lion, etc. Yao is not infectious though, and it can come from non-living things, like rocks.
Another easy class of creatures to identify is 怪, guai. In everyday, non-fantasy meaning, guai means different, strange. Unsurprisingly, it’s used to described monsters, the most straightforward term I think of. Do note that guai often means monsters that are as different from the human form as possible, aka. think Godzilla, not vampires. They are often not of human origin as well. From the works I have read, guai often don’t possess very varied magical abilities, outside of their immense physical strength and at most 1-2 quirks.
Now, 魔鬼 is a bit of a hard one, because sometimes they are used interchangeably, sometimes even together as a 2-in-1 package. Just to confirm my instinctive thoughts, I double-checked on Baidu (aka Chinese Google) to be sure. Let’s do 鬼 - gui first. Most of the time, gui is used to describe ghosts - humans who have died but not moved on or went to (Buddhist) hell or can still return to Earth. While benign ghosts are gui as well, some authors may use 灵魂 (ling hun - souls) to distinguish them from gui, which has a negative connotation. Gui often are sorted into different categories - the hungry ghosts, the violent ghosts, etc. 厉鬼 (li gui) is often the most violent ghosts who died in a horrible manner and wanted revenge against the living. Gui can possess a wide of range of abilities which is not very different from Western horror movies’ depictions. An obvious difference is gui abides by the Chinese Buddhism/Taoist beliefs of reincarnation and karma, rather than the typical Judeo-Christian thing in Western movies (aka none of that cross and holy water stuff). For example, Hua Cheng in TGCF is a 鬼王 - Gui Wang, which is the ghost king. By using the term gui, the author didn’t have to spell out that he used to be a human that died.
魔 - mo is a tricky term. It can be used to describe dead evil people, emphasis on evil. Interestingly, Baidu says the Chinese language does not have the word mo - it is rather an adaptation from the word “Mara” in the Buddhist scriptures. Strictly speaking, mo describes all negative human emotions that prevent humans from practising Buddhism / their quest for Nirvana. It describes doubts, temptations, jealousy, etc. which are the roots to “evil”. This word later evolves to describe “evil” in general. When people are corrupted with thoughts like greed, envy, they are said to develop a 心魔 - xin (heart) mo - literally evil in their hearts. In MDZS, what Nie Mingjue undergoes is called 走火入魔 - zou hua ru mo, which was translated as “qi deviation”. The word mo appears in this phrase, and its linked verb ru mo (to enter/descend to evil). Creatures that are described as mo, then, are implied to be of evil origins. In some texts, they are born from the evil of the world/humanity. In other texts, humans can corrupt themselves to the point of evil, turning themselve into mo. Maybe, mo (creatures) can be translated as demons, or at least that’s how I understand the latter term in the Judeo-Christian sense. Luo Binghe from Scum Villain is definitely a mo, having been inheriting the ‘evil’ blood from his father. Since mo are quite commonly understood as evil, that’s why Binghe has to ask Shen Qing Qiu whether he discriminates against Binghe for his blood.
Then, here comes the confusion: since gui are often evil, and mo is definitively evil, some will use them interchangeably. Which is not wrong - there are no strict rules regulating this as far as I know. However, it’s sometimes a bit difficult to know which English word to use for it - demon and ghost are quite different. Some times I don’t even know LOL. For example, in Guardian (Zhen Hun), Shen Wei is called a 鬼王 (gui wang) as well, like Hua Cheng. However, in the story (spoiler?) Shen Wei was never human - he was born from the ‘evil energy’ of the Earth. Which would make him closer to a mo wang - demon king, but when Priest (the author) uses gui wang, in Chinese it still makes sense, at least to me (and probably readers). I don’t know if I’m making sense here, but mo gui can be a bit difficult like that.
So that’s it for this post. If I’m free, maybe I’ll add on with 神仙佛圣, the good supernatural guys later.

Semifinal 1: Fei Du vs Jiang Cheng
Tumblr media
Semifinal 1 is between Fei Du (shixiong: Luo Wenzhou) from Mo Du vs Jiang Cheng (shixiong: Wei Wuxian) from Mo Dao Zu Shi

(gif set by @sandushengshou), the 'if one of us is to die, then, i beg, let it be me' that they both do for one another in a seemingly neverending loop of sacrifice. via this post a la my lovely @backtoyunmeng

jiang cheng is a cannonically ruined woman archetype, justified via the countless posts you'll get in the top posts of jiang cheng tag. he keeps chenqing, wwx's flute in perfect condition even when he hates wei wuxian, even when wwx, if only indirectly, has a part in jiang yanli's murder and oof okay someone pointed out to him that he's known to have killed wei wuxian and he almost cries. he absolutely believes, with his whole heart, that wei wuxian lives even when the world is sure he doesnt. and it always read to me like, i'd know if he was dead. he's a part of my soul, so i'd know if he was dead. he can't be dead.
this is getting too long, so, to sum up, some absolute poetry by @jiangchengsjawline

Round 2, Match 8: Wen Kexing vs Liu Qingge
Tumblr media
Match 8 is between Wen Kexing (shixiong: Zhou Zishu) from Word of Honor vs Liu Qingge (shixiong: Shen Qingqiu) from The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System
I mean Wen Kexing is all over Zhou Zishu from day 1, though he has very complicated emotions surrounding the whole shixiong/shidi element to their relationship, he does eventually declare himself as the second disciple of Shiji Manor and publicly acknowledges Zhou Zishu as his shixiong. anyways if you know anything about Wen Kexing you know how desperately he wants Zhou Zishu, even the censorship couldn't hide the fact that Wen Kexing wants to rail Zhou Zishu to kingdom come
Liu Qingge:
Okay I marked this as non-canonical but that's just because Shen Yuan is completely oblivious to how down-bad everyone around him is
Liu Qingge constantly aids and takes care of Shen Qingqiu, even fighting Luo Binghe (the actual ML) for 5 years to return Shen Qingqiu's body.

Semifinal 2: Quan Yizhen vs Wen Kexing
Tumblr media
Semifinal 2 is between Quan Yizhen (shixiong: Yin Yu) from Heaven Official's Blessing vs Wen Kexing (shixiong: Zhou Zishu) from Word of Honor
Propaganda under the cut
Tumblr media
you don’t understand, i need this win with every part of my soul
