Baroness Sybille Marguerite of Vincke née Princess of Hesse-Kassel, first cousin to Empress Maria Feodorovna, 1900s.
The youngest daughter of Landgrave Frederick William II of Hesse, she was only seven years old when her father died. Two years earlier, her ten-year-old sister Princess Marie- Polyxene (born April 29, 1872) died of bone marrow inflammation. A far-reaching argument ensued when Sybille got engaged to Lieutenant Friedrich Freiherr von Vincke in 1896. Contrary to the house law and the princely tradition, Landgravine Anna supported the love of the underage daughter.
The family council, now chaired by the second oldest son Landgrave Alexander Frederick, threatened to break off relations. The engagement was broken. Two years later, in September 1898, after reaching the age of majority, the wedding ceremony took place in the Weißfrauenkirche in Frankfurt. Landgravine Anna guaranteed her youngest daughter financial support, a dowry appropriate to her status and a pension in her marriage contract. In 1903 she financed the purchase of the Rettershof estate near Königstein im Taunus. The family lived here with their sons Eitel-Jobst (1899–1973) and Afram-Dietrich (1903–1966). In 1927 the estate was sold and Princess Sibylle, who had taken her maiden name again after the divorce, moved to Bern.
