I think in nuwho there's actually quite a few companions that try to essentially Become the doctor in one way or another but I personally think Donna was the most successful at it not because she was trying to but because they were already fundamentally similar enough that Ten looked at her and was like "please for the love of god take the reigns" and she was like "I gotchu"
