Protea longifolia
Proteas are well known from the cut-flower trade, but few people realize how many species there are, most of them native to the southwestern part of South Africa. This one is Protea longifolia, notable for the way the center of the flower head is gathered into a furry black cone, as can be seen in the lower photo. This is a shrub that is a little awkward as a garden subject, given the way that its branches tend to flop this way and that, but it is putting on a wonderful flower display this year at the Ruth Bancroft Garden.

Protea longifolia
South Africa is famous for its multitude of amazing Protea species, and one of these is Protea longifolia, from the lower slopes of mountains east of Cape Town. It is native to fire-prone areas, but it does not come back after being burned, relying instead on its seeds for regeneration.

Protea longifolia
It is hard to beat proteas for intricately-designed extravagant flower heads. This plant was incorrectly identified as Protea magnifica alba, but we now know it to be Protea longifolia. It is native to mountains in the southwestern part of South Africa, and it has good cold-tolerance, but it requires excellent drainage, acidic conditions, and avoidance of fertilizers with high levels of phosphorus.
