NOAH’S ARK on BROADWAY in 1896

You are not likely to find anything about Noah's Ark on New York City's famous Broadway today … but, at one time, it was the "toast of the town".

Noah's Ark, and the great world-wide flood as recorded in Genesis, is perhaps one of the most easily identifiable events in all of the Bible. The most interesting aspect of this episode is not the illusion itself, but the fact that it attracted so many people from New York City's secular population: from every-day working families, to the City's upper crust … all were thrilled with the experience.

A few points of note:

Technical details of the illusion were featured in Scientific American magazine

The Olympia was the premiere entertainment showplace of the world

Biblical themes were very popular, with all NYC audiences at the Olympia

It was founded and built by famous Oscar Hammerstein

It was reported that audiences were left spellbound after each Noah’s Ark performance

It was so popular and well-received, that the highly respected science publication, Scientific American, devoted an entire page to this Biblically-themed entertainment attraction -- complete with stunning illustrations.

Let’s take a step-by-step look at the Noah’s Ark illusion. I will inter-space the steps throughout today’s presentation.

STEP ONE

Hammerstein's Olympia Theater and Music Hall was once celebrated as the foremost entertainment venue in the entire world.

Located at 44th and Broadway in New York City, it was only two blocks from what is known today as Times Square. The main theater held 2,800-seats. And the building took up an entire city block.

STEP TWO

The rooftop was just as famous as the theater and music hall. It had a 65-foot tall glass roof, and was illuminated with over 3,000 light bulbs. To provide electricity, there were four dynamos that generated 3,200 amps of power. These dynamos also powered a complete air circulation system, and pump, that brought refrigerated water from the basement to the rooftop area -- providing what was a very early version of air conditioning ... in 1896!

Not to be outdone by any other venue, the rooftop also had trees, rocks, and even a stream that eventually led to a 40-foot lake. There were swans, ducks, and even South American monkeys.

And, while you were enjoying all of this, you could walk around the perimeter of the roof, and take in views of Central Park and neighboring New Jersey.

At the time, the cost of admission for everything, including entertainment, was only 50-cents! However, keep in mind, with the rate of inflation from 1896 to 2025, that same fifty cent admission price would be equivalent to roughly $15 to $20 today.

STEP FOUR

The Scientific American publication was founded by inventor and publisher Rufus Porter in 1845. Contributors of note include Thomas Edison, Robert Goddard, Jonas Salk, Albert Einstein, and Linus Pauling -- just to name a few.

STEP FIVE: The SOLUTION

The answer to the filling of the Ark with water is a simple one … the water funnel on the top of the Ark is attached to a hose that runs down through the support beams, then empties under the stage. The water never fills the Ark in the first place.

Other than taking creative license with a few details (for instance, the real ark was never filled with water), it was a wonderful opportunity for audience members to experience one of the great Biblical events on the grand Broadway stage.

Perhaps one day we'll see a revival of the Noah's Ark Illusion, or a variation on the theme. In the meantime, I'm glad to have been able to bring it to you with this Celebrate the Bible 250 podcast.

HTTP Proxy

All browsers (Chrome, Firefox, IE, Opera, Safari and others) support the proxy option. When we configure a proxy in the browser, the proxy will fetch the web pages to our browser. The sites consider the IP of the proxy as if it were our IP so that it is not possible to trace our real IP. Thus, the prosecutor helps us to change the IP address.

How to use the HTTP proxy in the browser? We can manually adjust the proxy option. The Elite Proxy Switcher is a good tool that allows us to configure the proxy to our browser. In this case, the free version is more than enough.

But where to get an HTTP Proxy We can get some free proxies, for example, through this list . There are paid and updated lists per hour, but the previous list is more than enough for the vast majority of users.

Cons: Public Proxies are not always stable, with a short "life" period. HTTP Proxies are suitable for users who need a large amount of IP addresses but only for a few hours.

2) Because of strong encryption, the VPN is much slower than the direct connectio

Web ProxyWeb Proxy is, without a doubt, the easiest way to change IP. The Web Proxy is basically a website with a URL bar. Just enter the URL of the blocked website in this bar and click on the "Surf" button. The Web Proxy will search the web page thus unlocking any possible blockage that we have encountered in.In this case, the problem is that Web Proxy does not support all sites. It uses a plugin to support Youtube. But on the other hand, it can not support Hulu or Pinterest. Another problem is security. If we use Web Proxy to visit secure sites (eg your online bank or paypal), our information may be intercepted.

"Вести" составляют список сервисов, которые помогут обойти блокировку и дальше пользоваться нужным сервисом.

РАСШИРЕНИЯ ДЛЯ БРАУЗЕРОВ

Одним из самых простых популярных решений является плагин Hola для браузеров. Тут все, что потребуется от пользователя - скачать программу, установить ее (установка автоматическая) и дальше в браузере выбрать из выпадающего списка вместо украинского ip любой иностранный. Для доступа к российским ресурсам лучше всего, разумеется, выбирать российский же прокси. Для владельцев браузеров Chrome и Mozilla данный плагин станет оптимальным решением.

Владельцам браузера Opera обойти блокировку будет возможно при помощи уже встроенного "турбо-режима" Opera Turbo, впрочем, работает он не всегда, особенно в случае ограничения доступа со стороны провайдеров.

Принцип, по которому работает Hola, есть и в плагине Zenmate, но его нельзя установить для Internet Explorer и Safari, зато другие популярные бразуеры - Mozilla, Opera, Chrome - поддерживаются. Существуют как платная, так и бесплатная версии.

Расширение FriGate, которое не требует регистрации, работает только через выделенные прокси-серверы. Это минимизирует потерю скорости, так как программа открывает заблокированные сайты из собственного заранее составленного списка.

Плагин TunnelBear также без проблем откроет заблокированные сайты. Он может замедлить работу браузера и запросит адрес электронной почты для активации.

ВЕБ-САЙТЫ

Существует большое количество сайтов-анонимайзеров., где достаточно ввести адрес заблокированного ресурса или ссылку на конкретный материал, чтобы получить доступ к его содержанию. Например, русский Hideme или Ninjacloak. Также качественными сервисами считаются ProxFree, Proxyweb и Hide My Ass.

По степени удобства веб-сервисы, предлагающие открытие заблокированных сайтов через прокси-серверы, не сильно отличаются друг от друга. Чаще всего они требуют всего лишь скопировать ссылку в строку на своей главной странице ввести нужный адрес.

Правда, поростота в использовании "компенсируется" не слишком высокой скоростью. Впрочем, если вам необходимо почитать, а не включить большое видео, данного решения хватит вам с головой.

Как ни странно, но обойти блокировку в некоторых случаях поможет переводчик Google, в который достаточно вставить адрес нужного сайта и нажать "перевести". Дело в том, что запросы переводчика обрабатываются на серверах США, так что в результате вы на выходе получите  ту же страницу, только пропущенную через американский сервер.

ПРОГРАММЫ

Идеальным решением для людей с манией преследования станет браузер Tor. Легендарная программа для параноиков всего мира, распахивающая двери в огромный мир даркнета. Tor - анонимная виртуальная сеть передающая трафик в зашифрованном виде, и гарантирующая полную анонимность. К тому же в браузере большое количество дополнительных настроек для обеспечения маскимальной анонимности, вплоть до введения в заблуждения относительно размера вашего монитора.

Главным минусом Tor является низкая скорость с приветом из эпохи телефонных модемов. По крайней мере, при прослушивании музыки и просмотре видео пользоваться Тором бесполезно.

Если вы боитесь, что обход блокировки незаконный (на самом деле законный) и вас за него могут наказать (не могут), для вас существует программа Tails, которая устанавливается на флешку и которую надо при загрузке компьютера выбирать в качестве нужной операционной системы вместо Windows (делается через BIOS). Эта ОС  позволит посещать любые сайты абсолютно анонимно, а при выдергивании флеш-карты из разъема, все ваши действия в интернете бесследно исчезнут.

ДЛЯ СМАРТФОНОВ

Упомянутый выше плагин Zenmate существует и для мобильной версии ровно на такой же бесплатной основе. Самое просте решение для пользователей iPhone и iPad - браузер Onion, однако он стоит 1 доллар. Для Android есть его аналог под названием Orweb.

Обходить блокировку без использования стороннего браузера можно при помощи TunnelBear, работающий по технологии VPN, но бесплатная версия приложения предоставляет только 500 мегабайт трафика в месяц.

Также на Android пригодятся браузеры OrBot или Puffin Web Browser.

ПРИЛОЖЕНИЯ

Самое главное: если вы скачаете и установите на свой компьютер или смартфон приложения Вконтакта и Одноклассников - они будут прекрасно работать несмотря на ограничения, потому что их связь с сервисом никак не связана с доменными именами.
