Okay - here's a Riley request! Is he still emetophobic? I know he's been trying to overcome it, at least with respect to being able to take care of Madix, and I'd love to see Madix motion sick or something similar where the illness is temporary and not contagious, and Riley deciding that he really wants to sit with him through the entire episode, taking care of him. And he's just holding it together and holding down his anxiety until the end, and he's both proud of himself but also emotionally drained from keeping his emotions in check for so long. So hopefully this works with where they are right now - thank you!
Thank you Lis! This was totally inspiring! It did take me a long time to get the motivation to post it though lol. I wrote this like a day after you sent the idea!
--------------------
“Do you think we’ll see a real polar bear on this trip?” Riley asked excitedly as he boarded the train with a misleading name. Madix chuckled and followed along behind his giddy boyfriend, shaking his head.
The Polar Bear Express—though unlikely to show passengers a glimpse of the white-furred animal—was still a wonder to experience especially during Christmas time. The evergreens sparkled with frost and the sky wore the colours of crystals. Unfortunately, Christmas was also the busiest time, meaning their tickets placed them in one of the last train cars. In hindsight, Riley should have known that the train ride through Northern Ontario held the risk of upsetting his boyfriend’s delicate constitution when it came to travel.
Madix had successfully gotten sick from cars, planes, and boats; why not add a fourth mode of transportation. Neither he nor Riley thought to consider the consequences. They heard about a romantic Christmas train ride and jumped on board.
Riley squeezed past other passengers to get to their seats. “I call the window seat!” He planted himself happily in the blue velvet-lined chair. The interior of the car was simple and spacious. It dared not distract from the beauty of nature. “Maybe we can switch on the way back.”
The train began with a lurch, reminding the boys of the coffee they drank to wake themselves up that morning. Beginning at 8am, the ride took them past mountains and frozen waterfalls, ending where they began at 8pm that night.
“We’ll probably see moose,” Madix remarked, taking the pamphlet from the pocket of the seat in front of him. There was plenty of leg room, though he still chose to press his knee against Riley’s thigh. All morning, Riley had not let go of his hand. They were stuck together like packing snow.
The boys shrugged off their jackets and settled in. For the first two hours, they were content to look out the large window. The landscape was crisp and sharp, that was until everything began to blur together. The icy blues melted into a monotone white as the locomotive sped by.
Their bodies swayed lightly from the movement. Riley found the train relaxing. He liked its gentle hum, the faint clicking sounds of the wheels on the track, and the soft rocking as they traversed the snowy area. They still hadn’t seen a moose, but he kept his eyes locked on the outdoors.
Madix could not say he felt the same. The train’s friendly interior lulled him into a false sense of safety. But soon he had no trouble remembering that he was inside a giant, chugging, metal box. Perhaps a moose or a beaver did in fact wave to them, but he would never know. Everything became a blur. His eyes could not keep up with the speeding sights. He swallowed a bout of nausea and closed his eyes.
Riley perked up when they came upon a flowing river. The water looked frigid, but pleasant enough apparently for the black bear that stood with all four paws in the stream. It wasn’t white, but it was still a freakin bear! He tapped Madix’s arm. “Babe, look, look! A bear! Did you see it?” He looked back at Madix with a massive smile.
Madix jumped out of his queasy daze. He peeled his eyes open, squinting from the light that bounced off the snow. “Mmh?” he mumbled. He was startled just fast enough to see a micro expression of disappointment on Riley’s face.
“A bear…it’s gone now.” Riley pouted. “Were you sleeping?”
Madix sat up straighter and blinked hard. “No, I just had to close my eyes for a second.” The lump in his throat told him that he wasn’t going to be able to hide this. His palms were clammy, and his head ached. The breakfast he’d eaten hours ago churned in his belly. “I’m feeling a bit nauseous.”
“Oh.” Riley took his hand off his boyfriend’s arm and pressed himself up against the window.
Madix swallowed thickly. “I’m sorry, honey.”
“N—No, no don’t be,” Riley stuttered. He brushed a strand of Madix’s hair behind his ear. “You’re pale. What can I do?”
“Nothing. I’ll probably go find an empty chair and wait it out.”
Riley hated that answer. Nothing. There was nothing he could do? And Madix’s plan was to weather out the nausea alone? He couldn’t let this happen again. After all he had done for Madix in his time of need, this was easy, right?
He grabbed Madix’s hand before he could leave their seats. “No, stay. Please. It’ll be okay. I want to help.”
“Are you sure?” Madix scanned Riley’s expression, looking for cracks. “Because that was bullshit about waiting it out.” He exhaled shakily. “I really think I’m gonna be sick.”
As if to test Riley’s resolve, Madix burped into his hand. He let out a groan and folded in on himself. He swore he could feel the wind rocking the train car, threatening to push it off the tracks. He squeezed his eyes shut and didn’t even open them when he felt Riley’s hand on his back.
“I’m staying right here.”
Madix hiccupped, causing his shoulders to jolt. “Ugh…you don’t have to, love.”
“Hush now,” Riley said firmly. He reached into the seat pocket to grab a bag. “Look, they even provided a barf bag for just such an occasion.”
Madix chuckled and took the bag from his boyfriend. He opened it, making the loudest crinkling noises that let all the other passengers know he was sick. “This is not the scenic trip you were hoping to have.”
“Maybe not, but at least I’m by your side.”
“Is your plan to be so cheesy that I throw up immediately and get this over with?”
“Is it working?” Riley regretted his reply when Madix belched wetly into the bag. Strings of saliva dripped from his open mouth. “Shit, baby.”
“I’m okay.” Madix did not look up from the depths of the hellish barf bag. “Just keep talking. I think it’ll help us both.”
Riley’s heart chugged in his chest, like a train struggling up a mountain side. “Oh gosh, Mads. I don’t know what to say,” he whispered. “This is like when you ask me to talk dirty and I say something stupid about underwear.”
Madix would have laughed at the specific memory that Riley was referring to, but his tongue was flooded with bile. He gagged and filled the bag with stringy ropes of vomit. The train car spun in his peripheral vision, but Riley’s voice remained constant and strong.
“Oh dear, babe.” Riley rubbed his boyfriend’s back, unaware of the bite force he exerted on his teeth or the bouncing of his leg. “Deer! I hope we see some of those on this trip. Once you stop puking, of course. I can’t believe you missed the fucking bear. Isn’t your family from the east coast? You’re supposed to have fishermen blood in your veins. What is this motion sickness nonsense? I think you’re faking it.”
A gush of sour vomit surged past Madix’s lips. This wasn’t so bad, he thought. Riley could be a comedian. He could almost enjoy the senseless drabble if it wasn’t for the gut churning sensation in his belly.
“Speaking of underwear!” Riley said, still in his hushed whisper. This wasn’t so bad, he thought. Madix was looking better with every heave. “I wore the ones with otters on them today. Seemed like the closest thing to polar bears. Except, they’re wearing astronaut suits because, you know, otter space.”
Finally, Madix could give him a real laugh. The vomiting tapered off. He sniffled and chuckled at the same time, forcing him to clear his throat and wipe the tears from his eyes. “God, Ry. I needed that.”
“Yeah, that was a lot of puke. Good job.”
“No, I mean you.” Madix crumpled the top of the bag in his hands to keep the contents inside. “Thanks for making me feel better. You did a good job as well.”
One of the train workers came by with a garbage bin for Madix to toss the used bag. They gave him water and tissues. His eyes were teary from vomiting, but he looked much better than before.
Riley was only just coming down from the adrenaline rush. His hands were shaking, and a cold sweat was drying beneath his shirt. He slumped back in the chair and let out a wavering exhale. “I think it’s my turn to close my eyes for a second.”
“Yes, honey, rest,” Madix said softly. “You did good.”
They fell asleep with their bodies falling onto one another. Madix’s head found the spot between Riley’s ear and collar bone, and Riley’s head came to rest on top.

CW: The end of this fic touches on emeto as a kink. There's nothing NSFW about this fic other than Micah and Alexi discussing it. If you'd rather avoid any talk of kink, then stop at the ellipsis (• • •)
---------------------
It was 11pm on December 31st when Micah accepted the fact that he was probably going to start the new year off by vomiting in a red solo cup.
His cup didn’t contain any alcohol. It was only water because that’s all his stomach could handle. When they first got to the party, the guy handing out drinks asked Alexi and Micah which one of them was the DD. Alexi had driven them here, so he was going to be the one to drive them home. Micah thought it was a waste; he’d already decided that he didn’t want to drink, not with the way his stomach was swirling. But Alexi insisted, telling Micah that he deserved a night to let loose.
He tried to enjoy himself. He really did. His stomach had only felt a little weird while the two of them got ready for the party.
Alexi and he had shared the bathroom, and Micah never once thought that his stomach-ache would get worse. While Alexi treated his marvelous curls with mousse, Micah had been brushing his teeth to rid his mouth of the taste of the dinner he just had. It had been a late meal of spicy ramen. Sure, his belly had been a little full and gurgly, but he chalked it up to indigestion.
Alexi had turned around after admiring his hair in the mirror and poked Micah in the tummy. “Are you still hungry?”
Micah burped and let out along exhale. “Not at all. At least I know I won’t fill up on pizza and chips at the party.”
“Remind me again whose house we’re going to.”
“Some of Riley’s grad friends. He promised it wasn’t going to be a wild rave.”
“Aw” Alexi said with a fake pout, “but we’re such savage party animals. What do the kids say? Turnt?” He decided to let some of that French-Canadian accent slip into the word for fun.
Micah let out a groan. “You’re so embarrassing.”
“So are you.” Alexi poked at Micah’s noisy abdomen one more time. “Tell your stomach to be cool.”
Not once since arriving at the party did Micah’s stomach decide to be cool. It ached and bubbled from the moment they arrive to just now when he was waiting in line for the bathroom. The house was huge, but Micah had trouble finding even one bathroom. The one he did find had people milling around the door.
He waited by the door, hoping that the crowd in the hallway would disappear before it was his turn. All the while, the nausea rose steadily in his throat. The case of simple indigestion was turning into something much worse. He couldn’t tell if his face was hot because of a fever or because he was nervous about throwing up in front of a bunch of strangers. He started to wish that the nausea had hit him before they left their house because he would have opted for staying home.
When the bathroom was his, he could still hear people outside. It didn’t matter much in the end because his stomach chose to be stubborn. Despite the nausea that made his head spin, nothing happened. He didn’t throw up; he just stared into the toilet while the food in his belly was tossed about. A few wet burps later, and he was exhausted of waiting. He was exhausted of being in public and he just wanted to go home.
He checked himself in the mirror, discovering that he looked just as bad as he felt. Sweat gathered around his hairline, making his brown hair stick to his face. His lips were cracked and dry, and his skin was the colour of a miserable rainy sky. The dark circles under his eyes threatened storms.
Micah left the bathroom, feeling sluggish and gross. He wished he had thrown up. At least then he might have felt lighter. His tired body carried him to a circle of people who had gathered in the living space. He heard the excitable and animated voice of his boyfriend, and suddenly everything was a little bit better....just a smidge.
Thankfully he knew most of the people in this circle. Madix and Riley were there, and so were Mateo and Shawn. Micah liked the latter. He hadn’t had many chances to talk to Mateo and Shawn, but the interactions that he did have were positive. Sadly, his next interaction wasn’t going to be a positive.
Most importantly, Alexi was there. Micah walked up to the group and subtly held onto Alexi’s arm. He leaned into his boyfriend, waiting for a moment when he could whisk him away. Alexi acknowledged his presence by kissing him quickly on the head.
“Oh Micah, we were just talking about you,” Mateo said, drunkenly.
“Oh?” That was all he felt like saying for the time being.
Mateo seemed to lag for a second while he tried to remember what they were just talking about. Shawn shook his head with a chuckled and picked up the conversation. “Alexi was telling us that your novel is being published this year.”
Micah gave a small nod. God, he really was a savage party animal.
By this point, Alexi clued into the fact that his boyfriend was being very clingy and quiet. As the conversation drifted to new topics, away from Micah, Alexi leaned in closer. “How’s it going? You don’t look very loose, yet I swear I specifically requested it.”
Micah let out a moan and shoved his face into Alexi’s bicep. Before he could answer, a wet burp bubbled up from his belly. It tasted sour and caused his stomach to do a flip. “I don’t feel good,” he mumbled.
Concerned, Alexi shifted to get a better look at his boyfriend but before he could say anything, another burp burst from Micah’s mouth. This was much louder and got the attention of the others in the circle. His cheeks turned pink as all of his friends turned to look at him.
“Excuse me,” he muttered, not wanting to look up.
“Micah, you okay, man?” Shawn asked with his head slightly cocked to the side. “You don’t look so hot.”
Micah felt like he was overheating in his skin. Normally he wouldn’t be so embarrassed about being sick in front of his friends, but now he just felt like the center of attention. He stood there, stuttering.
That’s when Alexi stepped forward, wrapping his arm around his boyfriend. “Uh guys I think we’re going to leave. Micah doesn’t seem to be feeling well.”
Micah finally found his voice once Alexi’s arm came around his shoulder. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to kill the buzz.”
“It’s fine,” Riley said, noticing how sick his cousin looked. “Really, it’s fine. But you do look like you’re about to keel over.”
Micah didn’t say anything. He thought that he was in more danger of vomiting than fainting, but he didn’t announce that to Riley. He turned to Alexi. “I would like to leave, if that’s okay.”
“Of course.”
Shawn nodded his head towards Alexi, “You good to drive or do you guys need a ride?” He shot a glance at his own boyfriend who was rather sloshed. “Teo might be the next one looking green if we stay much longer.”
“Thanks for the offer, Shawn, but I can drive,” Alexi assured him, now supporting most of Micah’s weight. “I don’t want to make you miss the countdown.”
“Alright. Feel better Micah.” The rest of their friends echoed this as they left the house.
“Thanks for getting me out of there,” Micah said to Alexi once they were away from the party. They walked along the street, looking for their car. The December air bit at their cheeks.
“What happened?”
“I don’t know.” Micah dragged his hands down his face, hating the nausea that never dulled. The sick feeling in his belly never seemed to ebb, only flow. “My stomach started hurting really bad. I’m so nauseous, Lexi.”
“Alright,” Alexi said calmy, trying to sooth his anxious boyfriend. “I’m gonna get you home.”
Once at the car, he opened the door for Micah and hopped in on the driver’s side after grabbing a plastic bag from the back. He handed it to his boyfriend with a sympathetic look. Micah’s throat kept moving up and down with the nausea that so clearly overtook his body. Micah let out a sick burp and covered his mouth. Alexi frown at the misery displayed on his face. “Aw honey, you really don’t look good.”
‘I feel awful,” he replied, spitting a string of thick saliva in the bag.
“I wonder what got your stomach feeling so upset.”
Micah shrugged; he wasn’t in the mood for theorizing. He just wanted the nausea to disappear. Every time he thought the nausea was reaching its peak, he was always disappointed when nothing but gags came up. The churning sensations kept building up, yet he never got the relief of throwing up.
The plastic bag filled only with saliva.
“Still nothing?” Alexi looked over when they stopped at a red light. “Sure, sounds like you’re about to throw up.”
Micah threw his head back with a frustrated sigh. “I feel so sick. Why won’t it happen?”
Alexi gave Micah’s leg a squeeze. “You just have to be patient. Your body will tell you when.”
When? When! Micah continued to fidget and moan the entire drive home. The time on the dashboard told him that it was almost 11:30. He started to think that maybe he wasn’t going to start the new year off by vomiting, maybe it was never going to happen, and he’d be cursed with irremediable nausea for the next year.
By the time they got home, Micah’s stomach was just as full and just as sloshy. “Do you want to take anti-nausea meds before going to bed?” Alexi asked as he led the boy into the house.
“I guess.” Micah sulked on his way to the bedroom. Maybe he could trick his stomach into vomiting with reverse psychology? He didn’t know what he was thinking, but he took the pills that Alexi gave him anyway.
The two of them shrugged off their clothes in favour of pajamas.
“There’s a bucket on the floor,” Alexi said, sighing as he tucked a shivering Micah under the blankets. He kissed him on the forehead before getting in next to him. Micah was glad when his boyfriend joined him in the bed.
Th bedroom was quiet for all of two minutes, then Micah started tossing and turning, just like his stomach. He curled on his side to wrap his arms around his torso like a child crying in their bed. The sounds coming from him were pretty darn close to crying. He couldn’t help but let out moans of discomfort.
And of course, Alexi heard this all. He was having just as hard time falling asleep. How could he have believed that sleep was an option when his boyfriend was suffering right next to him? “Do you want me to rub your stomach?”
“Yes please,” Micah shifted around in the blankets so that he was lying on his back. He felt Alexi’s warm hand slide over his bloated middle. The very first touch made him wince, but he relaxed as Alexi slowly moved his hand up and down his belly. Miraculously Micah’s breathing grew deeper, less pained.
He closed his eyes to focus on the gentle rhythm and circles that Alexi drew on his body. The noises continued and the nausea never went away, but Micah allowed himself to believe that everything was fine. He was cozy and loved—and oh fuck his belly was trying to kill him. He suddenly felt like he was drowning as saliva pooled in the back of his mouth.
Micah shot up as his stomach gave a sick lurch. Seconds later, the bed was covered in vomit that gushed out of his mouth. Alexi bolted into a sitting position as well just as Micah let out a whimper.
“Ugh my body didn’t tell me when,” he choked out. He belched wetly. It was deep and thick in his throat. The burp was only the beginning of the next wave that surged up from his belly. The top blanket got once again covered in partially digested stomach contents.
Alexi rubbed Micah’s tense back. “You’re alright. That was sudden.”
“I’m really sorry,” Micah said. He was happy that it was too dark to see the mess strewn across the blankets. He could certainly feel the wetness through the covers. He sniffled and wiped his runny nose along his arm. It’s not like he was trying to stay clean. His shirt had not been spared either. “Ugh, and the bucket is literally right here.”
“It’s no biggie,” Alexi assured him. He turned on the bedside lamp and tapped his phone to light up the screen. He chuckled at the time.
“God, this is a mess,” Micah said as he saw what he’d done to the bed.
Alexi carefully got out from under the covers and helped Micah do the same. “Hey, guess what? It’s midnight. Well twelve oh one, but that’s still pretty impressive.”
“Wow,” Micah said, deadpan. “I’ll not be kissing you.”
“I appreciate that. Are you ready for a shower?”
Micah grimaced. His stomach didn’t feel much better, but he supposed that getting clean should be a priority now that he was wearing his year-old dinner...that joke got old as soon as he thought it.
Alexi, feeling a little dirty as well, got into the shower after helping Micah in. He made the water nice and warm because Micah was shaking as he stood there.
Micah was too tired and sick to clean himself—or so he said—so Alexi made sure to wash his hair and his body, slowly so that they could spend more time under the hot water.
After a while, Micah didn’t want to be in the shower anymore. The nausea was back after its brief vacation. He burped and the taste that it left in his mouth made him shiver. “Lexi, I think I’m gonna be sick again.”
Alexi paused his gentle lathering. “Okay, just let it out, baby. There’s no better time I suppose.”
Micah turned away from Alexi, happy that he could still feel his hands on his back. The muscles in his abdomen flexed as a torrent of sick rushed out of his mouth.
“That’s it. Keep going” Alexi encouraged. “You’ll feel better when it’s all out.” He trailed his hand around Micah’s torso to rub his poor belly. Micah’s stomach dipped under Alexi’s hand just before the next gush splattered at the bottom of the shower. The vomit swirled down the drain easily, which both boys were happy about. Micah was in no mood to see what had come out his body. It had been gross enough on the bed.
When Micah’s stomach was empty, they spent a few more minutes under the water, ensuring that everything was washed away.

Alexi helped his weak boyfriend to dry off. Micah’s long hair hung by his shoulders as it dried into a wavy mess. In the comfortable silence, Alexi thought about something Micah had said. Th boy had obviously been joking when he said he wouldn’t kiss Alexi to ring in the new year. But it got Alexi thinking about all the times they had kissed when one of them still had the taste of sick in their mouth.
“How are you feeling now?” Alexi asked as they put on new pajamas.
“Better.” Micah looked comfy in his plaid pajamas bottoms and cotton shirt. He certainly didn’t look as nauseous which Alexi was grateful for.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“Yeah.”
Alexi wasn’t sure how to start. “Do you…only like throwing up if it’s intentional?”
The question put a bit more life into Micah. “Oh, a kink question.” He thought about it for a second. He felt confident in the fact that he didn’t particularly like this most recent occurrence. “Yeah, I would say so. It’s no fun if I’m miserable and sick.” He looked curiously at Alexi. “And if you’re the one who’s actually sick—God, the last thing on my mind is sex.”
“Really?”
“Of course,” Micah said, matter-of-factly. “You think whenever you’re sick, I’m secretly like ‘damn, this boy hot’?”
Alexi chuckled. “So, you’re not?”
Micah shook his head. “I hate seeing you in pain. Sure, it’s fun when we plan for it, but not when it’s serious.”
“I see,” Alexi, nodding his head. He looked at the mess on their bed and back to his boyfriend. “Now, go lie on the couch while I change the sheets.”
The exhaustion took over Micah’s body then. The idea of a clean bed sounded heavenly now that his stomach might let him get some sleep. “Thanks for helping me, Lexi. I love you.”
“I know you’d do the same for me.” Alexi gave him a wink. “Love you too.”
