It's a One-Way Road so Enjoy the Trip

Today I got my hands on the Pursuit of Cobra Spirit Iron-Knife action figure I bought two nights ago over the internet. Minor greviances aside, it's an amazing figure, like pretty much 90% of the PoC line, and it's also a glorious Predator homage so I'm a happy camper. Plus, when I rang the seller's bell, about the last thing I expected was for him to be a podiatrist who asked me to wait 'till he was done with a customer to hand over the figure. Really should've taken the time to ask him how this figure ended up with him, but I was a bit too excited to get home and crack it open.

Counting Spirit, I now have a little over 30 GI Joe figures alone. I also have about eight other miscellaneous figures and about six Transformers. So it's probably time to talk about it.

I guess that the number is not really that impressive, especially compared to some of the collections I've seen around the web, but after putting them all together in my bookshelf (different shelves for Cobras and Joes, naturally) I realized I have a rather awful lot of the bastards. And while I do regret at least one of them, that goddamn 25th Anniversary Flint with the terrible Duke Arms, I'm pretty satisfied so far. Some I bought online, some I had shipped from the US, one I picked from a peg at the Times Square TRU, and the rest I found at a handful of local comic book shops or toy stores. And of course, there's the first two I bought at a convention. Where it all started.

By then I had read the comics, seen the movie, followed the cartoon, and overall done pretty much everything that's required of a GI Joe fan except buy the figures. I had some ancient ones hidden away in boxes from my halcyon days of youth, but as with many things in life, it's not real unless you're spending your own money on it. And spend my money I did, probably more than I should've, but thanks to exchange rates and such I have to pay upwards of 150 of our bucks for each figure. Still, worth it.

It wasn't just the intricate detail on such a small scale, or the veritable arsenal of (mostly) real-life guns these figures came with. It wasn't just being reunited with the childlike joy of playing with toys again, now mixed seamlessly with an adult appreciation at the sheer level of craftsmanship these figures have. It wasn't just finally having figures of characters I loved from the comics and cartoons and everything else. It was all that and something else. Something that didn't hit me until much later, when I bought my third figure. And my fourth. And the rest. It was the realization that nothing happened.

Nothing happened. I didn't lose my job, or my house, or my clothes. I didn't get my adult card taken away by the adult police. I wasn't disowned by my family or shunned by society. At worst I got a couple of weird looks from my brother, until he too saw just how realistic these figures were. In the end, once the dust settled I was still a grown man, using disposable, non-vital income acquired through honest means and hard work to purchase something that brought me joy. Whatever lingering feelings of shame or awkwardness I had left vanished into thin air when I made that pivotal realization, and what could've grown into a guilty pleasure blossomed into a legit, actual pleasure.

It also happened to set me off on a downwards spiral that I haven't been able to break free from, but honestly, I don't feel like doing it just yet. After all, they are putting out a Blind Master figure from the new Retaliation movie, and I sure could use a 3 3/4 inches RZA with a flying guillotine accessory. And besides, as I'm fond of jokingly telling anyone who stares in silent awe at my assembled collection, "at least it's not crack."
