i was reading your tags about quentin and men and it made me think of him and penny... i haven't watched the later seasons in forever, did he and penny 23 interact differently from him and penny 40? basically i'm wondering if him and penny 40 just got off on the wrong foot leading to their later tensions, or if their personalities just do not gel no matter which incarnation

penny23 doesn’t have a lot of interactions with anyone except julia, but he and quentin don’t gel, no — for reasons, i think, that aren’t totally about quentin23 having “dragged” julia to fillory where she died: penny23 is very subdued and careful in his reactions to everything (except in 4x06, which if the show had had a brain would’ve been explored), but he still can’t resist getting some digs in at quentin’s loserdom. i think quentin really annoys penny because of how he presents in terms of manhood, but much like margo he’s also drawn to quentin’s earnestness/inability to repress how much he cares etc because that’s something in himself he has trouble expressing: the FIRST thing he does while emotion-bottled is to compliment quentin!

so like i think because of who they are they’re not going to fall into step with each other immediately, so to speak, but i do love to see a reluctant, squabbling, hard-won friendship between them.

So I'm rewatching s3 of The Magicians, and you just have to wonder.....the Alice/Cassandra casting has gotta have *some* sort of significance. I mean, Alice is really the only character who consistently makes pretty dire predictions about the future (which are largely dismissed). Furthermore, issues of destiny/fate/precognition are thematically significant throughout seasons 3 and 4: the Library & its books, Quentin23 and the time key, now Fen's visions and even Quentin's "proof of concept."

I'm also struck by Hades' remark to Penny that magic is the carrot the Gods use to keep humans in check. Coupled with the recurrent theme of magical gatekeepers (on multiple levels: Brakebills/Hedges, Librarians/Magicians, Gods/Humans), it seems like magic might be a natural resource that the Gods have seized authority of, and that the final task will be to fully wrest control of magic back from the gods; no wellspring or pipes or back door, just free magic.

Of course, free magic, as we've been continuously been reminded, means truly free, for better or for worse, so it might just happen that the disaster Alice fears will come to pass as a consequence of magic's un-damming; maybe the Monster is just a preview of what to come.

Anyway I'm just spitballing here 🤷🏻‍♀️ but Julia's arc (and Iris' jabs at her) definitely seem to indicate (or foreshadow?) that there's a need to level the playing field between Gods and mortals, and this might be how.
