Inspiration

Following the prompt of using a single sound source to create a track, I wanted to explore the extent of an iPhone creatively and musically. Particularly, I wanted to test the limits of what sounds an iPhone can create, and how the sounds could be created. 

I was inspired by Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver License”. Although minimal, her track begins with the sound of a car turning on, where it is used as an introductory transition into her melody. I was inspired by her use of car noises to fit the narrative of her song, where the notion of a driver’s license reflects the falling out of a relationship. I wanted to subvert the process, and write a narrative to fit the phone sounds that I have collected instead. Therefore, “Lockscreen” was written using a phone as a display of a failed relationship. 

Similarly, I was inspired by RnB tracks such as Ariana Grande’s “r.e.m” and “successful”, where the song favours the rhythmic elements, along with the main vocal and backing harmonies, whilst the instrumental accompaniments were less prominent. I decided that I could make more rhythmic than melodic elements out of the samples I collected, and thus I wanted to follow a more RnB approach.
