Sanzo's got that kind of face that just looks way better with an annoyed expression—which is really good, because that seems like the only expression he's capable of making.

In fairness to him, Mark's been trying his patience on purpose since the moment they met. As someone who's met a lot of people that get annoyed really easily and arbitrarily, he's never met anyone who's nearly as easy to get a reaction out of as Genjo Sanzo, the 31st of China.

If Mark weren't technically in training to be a Sanzo himself, he'd make fun of the pretentiousness of the title compared to the person who has it. But he's not really one to talk, on that respect.

"Aww. Come on! It could be fun. You could have a good time. And if you don't have a good time, you could always—" he cuts himself off abruptly, eyes flicking down to the place Sanzo keeps his gun. Then he looks back up and winks— "Well, y'know. You could if you had the guts."

That sort of thing always riles Sanzo up the most. Mark knows he'll wear out the novelty if he keeps pulling the 'shoot-me-now' card, but it's just too good not to. He doesn't really have a death wish, but it's not like he expects Sanzo to shoot him, either.

Filling the pause between sentences with a delighted snicker, Mark swivels around on his feet to face Sanzo. "But seriously, who wouldn't wanna take in the sights? I mean, some random-ass village—what a novelty! It only looks exactly the same as every other village around here; you might never get this chance again!"

He pauses, then crosses the room to lean on his hands against the table Sanzo's made himself comfortable at. A couple beats of silence pass before Mark reaches over, shifting his weight all to one hand, and flicks the top of the newspaper Sanzo has barely looked up from since everyone else left.

"Anyway, I know you're on a cross-continental road trip or whatever," he remarks, "but you've really gotta get out more."

"Mean to me!" Mark whines, though there's a wide smile on his face all the while.

Of course Sanzo is being mean—this wouldn't be half as fun if that wasn't the usual response. It's easy to get that sort of brusque response out of him, because he's the sort of person who can't sit around and pretend not to be annoyed if there's something annoying him.

Naturally, that sort of person is Mark's very favorite. It's easy to forget about someone you knew for a little while who was generally nice and unobtrusive, but it's hard to forget about someone who always bothered you to your very core. That's all based on personal experience, but it's worked for him so far, and he's betting Sanzo isn't any sort of exception to the rule, for all that he pretends he's quick to move on from just about everything.

"For the record, I was alone out here by my own choice. I'm a willing hermit. I've got tons of friends back at the monastery. They're almost as mean to me as you, actually!" Feeling it an appropriate moment to do so, he delivers a cheeky wink and sticks his tongue out at his favorite temporary travelling companion. Sanzo will probably hate that, too. "And, uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you literally just call those guys your servants, like, the last time we were in town? So they're on the same level as friends now that you've gotta get me back? Wow. You're about as fair-weather as they come, Genjo."

He chuckles, a light and airy sound.

Really, Sanzo's not actually that difficult to see through. Mark gets the sense that he's just being stubborn, or that he's in ardent denial because of how stubborn he is—really, he'd kill to matter to anyone as much as Sanzo does to Gojyo, Hakkai, and Goku. His isolation has always been his largest and most obvious sore spot, and travelling with them has only served to highlight that hollow void in his very existence.

It's easiest to fill it with making a nuisance out of himself. At least Mark is in control of his own position, then; he makes himself an accomplice to the mischief the other three cause, and he makes himself a bother to Sanzo. They're not really the best things he could be, but he got to choose them.

"I think I've actually got one up on you, from where I'm standing. I'm starting to make pretty good friends with your loyal servants who definitely aren't actually your friends but conveniently count as basically friends for the sake of this one argument."

Sanzo draws in a slow, deep breath, half-hissed through gritted teeth. He fills his lungs with smoke and— hopefully— some small wisp of ever-illusive patience along with it. The unwelcome tag-along that is Mark Langhorne is clearly detemined to test it every chance he gets, and it only worsens the bloody monk’s already foul mood when he senses the other man’s delight at its inevitable snap.

It’s better for both of them for Sanzo to remain silent. Mark enjoys pushing his buttons, sure, but enjoying something doesn’t make it good for you— it can’t be, in this case. Right? As for Sanzo…well, according to Hakkai’s estiimation, it’s going to be a long few nights out on the road. Until they reach the next inn, there’s no way for Sanzo to square away any space for himself— no reprieve from the company of his companions or this…new addition. At least if he refuses to dignify Mark’s pestering with a response now, there’s a chance he’ll get bored enough to go bother someone else for the time being, and he’ll have saved himself a night’s headache.

Although they’re all generally more receptive to this man’s behavior— a fact which apparently doesn’t satisfy whatever inane itch that drives Mark to dig himself under Sanzo’s skin— there are three other bastards in this group for him to pull his amusement from.

But the spiteful creature in Sanzo’s blood would always rather choose the worse option, so long as it’s worse for them both.

Taking the smoldering cigarette from between his lips, he exhales the breath he’s been holding into a cloud of resentful gray, floating up towards the sunset-bathed sky. Like most excuses he gives Sanzo for his wayward behavior, it's not something he expects Sanzo to push beyond maybe a passing comment that his excuses are terrible—though whether Sanzo actually believes that sort of thing when he says it or if he's insulting for the sake of being insulting, Hakkai can't always tell.

He wrenches his eyes away from Sanzo, forcing them outwards into the woods, where he can still hear the faint sound of Gojyo and Goku arguing with eachother.

Now that he's looked away, the severity of his wild impulse makes itself known. It proves extremely difficult not to look back at Sanzo, such that Hakkai picks a low-hanging branch on a nearby tree and challenges himself to look at it for as long as possible. He used to use that sort of technique on his students, when they were feeling particularly restless. It serves him well, now.

"… Thankfully, it looks like this will be our last night in a row spent outside," Hakkai reflects aloud. He doesn't expect an answer from Sanzo, though the pause between statement and hypothetical response is so great that he feels his eyes slide over slightly in that direction, and he speaks again to fill the void and curb the urge to look.
