aira called me and was like "listen listen! there's this rabui~ cake shop we need to eat at together! i'll be waiting for you!" and i kind of wanted to cry

you know how sheltered LyriLily girls are right? to the point they know almost NOTHING about modern technology. anyway, my theory is that Aira used to get everything he wanted cus he's the "heir" of the family (if we're talking of prestigious Asian families, the first male child is always the heir. in my hc here Kurumi is a year older than Aira cus she's a second year rn while Aira is still first year).

meanwhile, the Shiratori family thought they must raise Kurumi like a "proper lady to be married to a prestigious family in future." so Arisugawa and being sheltered from EVERYTHING. so my hypothesis is that earlier Aira and Kurumi didn't really get along well. it was more like two strangers living in the same house.

however, once LyriLily came into place and D4FES happened, Aira became a HUGE LyriLily fan. the biggest fan of LyriLily and the biggest fan of Kurumi Shiratori, his older sister. After D4FES, Aira and Kurumi became very good friends. they were finally allowed to mingle more due to Kurumi's DJ activites.

Aira isn't really a fan of DJ music in general, but he loves LyriLily!!! because their music is so "rabui~". he went CRAZY when the Hololive collab happened!! HIS SISTER COLLABORATED WITH HOLOLIVE VTUBERS!!! CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW BIG THAT IS??? Kurumi doesn't get Aira's hype but she's SO glad she finally has someone in family to share all of this.

still, somewhere down, Aira can't help but feel sad that while his sister made it big, he's still staying at his home doing nothing but fangirling over his idols all day.....

but when Aira becomes a part of ES? HE'S SO NOT NORMAL. HE FINALLY GETS TO BECOME WHAT HE HAS IDOLISED FOR SO LONG.

now, due to the hectic schedule of being an idol/being in a DJ unit, they sadly don't get much time to spend together. but! as i mentioned Aira abuses idol powers! alongside visiting ES, they often go around the town together. and Aira is flabbergasted by how little Kurumi knows of the city. "how did we grow up in the same house" is what he thinks. well, rich prestigious Asian households bias ig Aira </3

anyway, i like to imagine that sometimes Kurumi sneaks off from her servants unwatched and. unknowingly stumbles upon HiiKohaAi on a date together in a cafe. and when Aira spots her he SCREAMS. now i like to imagine Kurumi doesn't really know the difference between platonic love and romantic love (not hcing her as aro, more like she just doesn't label or categorise love). so she doesn't really get why the scream. like to her they are friends (romantic) hanging out together. even if KohaAi are holding hands and Hiiro kissed Aira on the cheek the moment Aira noticed Kurumi's existence. and Aira dies of embarassment while Hiiro agrees with her and Kohaku simply. chooses to ignore the conversation.

Aira talks of something about city/idol culture and both Hiiro and Kurumi go "huh what's that" and Aira goes (flabbergasted but affectionately) "how come both of you are so clueless about this? also Neechan we grew up in the same house how sheltered were you that you don't know this." Aira simply cannot come to terms with how different they grew up. (also, Kurumi was originally Onee-sama to him. because of their family. after D4FES Aira took to calling her Neechan when they were alone or amongst friends)

Mayoi is SCARED AS FUCK of Kurumi, no matter how much Aira reassures him that she doesn't mean harm. he does NOT like being pranked and probably hides in vents whenever he hears ANYTHING indicating Kurumi's presence. Tatsumi ADORES Kurumi and the rest of the LyriLily girls. they have Bible studies together (though Kurumi and Miiko don't really pay attention HAHA). also, their pranks, to their dismay, don't faze Tatsumi. who laughs at them and sees them as nothing but "youthful innocence".

Miiko is INTRIGUED by Mayoi. The Phantom. Whenever she visits ES courtesy of Kurumi she's on the lookout to catch Mayoi. she probably knows a third of ES's hiding spots by now by sheer force. The horrors don't scare her, they attract her. Mayoi's hiding spots are dwindling. he is terrified.

Haruna, to put it simply, not a fan of Alkaloid except Tatsumi. she respects him as a proper gentleman. until one day her personal driver fails to pick her up due to illness and Tatsumi volunteers to drive her home. she doesn't come near Tatsumi for the next three weeks.

but Miyu and Miiko LOVE Tatsumi's driving? ESPECIALLY MIYU?? in general, Miyu is fond of ALL of Alkaloid. they're completely different from the people she's usually around. in fact the entire world of ES is so fascinating and new to her. everytime she visits ES it's like a child visiting an amusement park for the first time. also, she loves Alkaloid and their history. it's so inspiring to her. she cannot get enough of this world so different from the Arisugawa atmosphere....

anyway this turned out too long. i think I'm done for now. i literally made up an entire world where Kurumi and Aira are siblings and LyriLily and Alkaloid are friends LMFAOAOA. but hope you enjoyed it! if you've read this far anyway lol

Keito: It's delicious, no doubt about it. Yuzuru has always been competent, but I didn't realise that even your cooking skills are perfect.

Yuzuru: I am grateful to hear that. However, I only became able to make dishes like these quite recently… After I became part of “Niki’s Kitchen”.

Until that point, I used to diligently make lunches for Bocchama… But they were considered dull and were not well-liked.

And that was because I prioritised ingredients with higher nutritional values, which, to be fairly honest, I do not regret.

If I had to choose between taste and nutritional intake, then I would always pick the latter for Bocchama’s sake.

However, by becoming a part of “Niki’s Kitchen”, I came to understand that it is not necessary to make a choice between the two. I realised that with enough scheming, you can make delicious dishes filled with ample nutrients.

Thanks to the guidance of Shiina-sama, Bocchama has started breaking into smiles during mealtimes.

And that’s not all. Like this, I have also become able to make dishes that pleases others besides Bocchama.

I shall take care not to get too pretentious and continue to devote myself here on forth as well.

Aira: Nom nom… But this is super tasty, so I think it’s fine even if you get a little pretentious?

I mean, I definitely would. I’d put plenty of hashtags and post all over SNS.

Yuzuru: To be honest, when I first heard your request, I was quite taken aback. I’m honoured that I can please you.

How is everyone else's? I hope they are to your liking…

Keito: No complaints here, this is wonderful. You’re a competent cook, Fushimi, so of course the food is perfect too.

Yuzuru: You are too kind. I have not always been able to make these sorts of dishes. Only recently, when I joined Niki’s Kitchen was I able to do so.

Until then, I only made bentos for Bocchama. If it was flavourless, he would dislike it.

Though it had to be as nutritional value was of the highest priority so it is not something I regret.

If you take into account both nutritional intake and flavour, Bocchama prefers the latter.

But, once I joined Niki’s Kitchen, I discovered that it was unnecessary to balance them. If you repeatedly plan out your ideas, you can make recipes that are full of nutrition and are also tasty.

Thanks to Shiina-sama’s guidance, I can see Bocchama eat a meal with a smile on his face.

But that is not all. In this way, I am able to create dishes that people other than Bocchama will enjoy.

To not be conceited and focus my energy, I can also continue to devote myself.

Aira: Munch munch… I think it’s alright to be conceited because this tastes really good, right?

There are over 2.3 million people in prison as of 2017. Over 400 thousand of those are for drug offenses and most of the federal level, around half, is filled with people who have committed drug offenses. This should feel normal until the fact that 400 thousand of those people are behind bars without having been convicted yet, they are just waiting behind bars for their trial to start, and around a quarter of those people are waiting on a trial for a non-violent drug offense (Wagner and Rabuy, 2017). This raises the question of whether or not it is worth it to arrest people for some of the most basic offenses someone can commit that most citizens are starting to say should not be a crime. As of 2015, it costs around seventy-five dollars per person per day from taxes. Multiply that out by the 2.3 million people and that’s over 172.5 million dollars a day from taxes, around 6.2 billion per year from the taxes that every other citizen has to pay (Prisons Bureau, 2016). When taken into account that in 2015 America made about 3.3 trillion dollars in taxes this might not seem like too much but it is still spending that could be spent somewhere more needed as that is still a very large sum of money (Chantrill, 2015).

The United States Prison System: A Billion Dollar Industry

The United States incarcerates more people than any other country in the world.  In 2019, there were 2.3 million people under control of the American criminal justice system from probation to federal prisons, for example, and through other forms.  The War on Drugs, a campaign run by the United States federal government to reduce the illegal drug trade in the country, began in the early 1970’s which many people argue is the starting point of the era of mass incarceration (Rabuy & Wagner, 2017).  With the push to get drugs off the streets of America and more people getting locked up for being involved in this illegal activity, it resulted in a rapid increase of incarceration rates.  The focus on this drug problem should have been a focus on trying to reduce drugs and reform our society but it turned into a focus on arresting and incarcerating more and more people.  From the start of the War on Drugs, the use of discrimination in the criminal justice system and incarceration rates in the United States only continued to quickly grow.  The negative impacts of this campaign still affects our society today.  Mass incarceration in the United States is important because of how much it costs, the racism in our criminal justice system, and how it negatively affects communities in our society.

Prisons in the United States cost a great deal of funding.  In an article about money relating to increases in prison population, Spelman (2009) writes:

As we fill prisons beyond capacity or farm prisoners out to other states or institutions, we incur both higher financial costs (increased transportation costs, profit, an inconvenience premium) and higher inchoate political and administrative costs (these prisoners remain our responsibility, but we cannot control and take care of them directly).  Thus, the marginal cost of each offender—the cost of the next prison bed—should be increasing with the number of prisoners. (p. 3)

As the United States, criminal justice system continues to arrest and incarcerate people, more money is spent keeping them in prisons.  All their necessities are paid for from the government’s budget which partly comes from the taxpayers.  Private prisons are another story and they have their own system and budgeting arrangements.  As the number of prisoners goes up so does the price of taking care of them.  Whatever type of prison it is, there is still a need for money to keep the prisoners alive while they serve their time and keep the prison itself running as smoothly as possible.  The United States spends billions of dollars on prisons every year (Rabuy & Wagner, 2017).  If there was not such an influx in inmates across the country maybe this budget could be reduced and spent on other needed programs like education that often gets ignored (Campbell & Partelow, 2019).  In their book about privatization, Leighton and Selman (2010) write about cost of prisons:

When private prisons pay executives substantially more than their government counterparts and pay guards less, contracting with a private prison directly contributes to income inequality. Further, examining the level of executive pay and the process by which it is set raises questions about the efficiency of private prisons. It might also provide useful context for reading the research findings that private prisons provide little or no cost savings. (p. 117)

The way private prisons handle their finances is different in some respects from the way public prisons handle theirs.  Private prisons do not rely on the government for expenses so they sometimes have more freedom to spend money the way they want to.  Paying guards less than prisons run by the government do may result in a negative work environment if those guards feel they are not being compensated for their hard work.  Prisons who are responsible for housing a lot of inmates need to make sure their operations run smoothly and they are spending their money on necessities to keep the prisons efficient.  Prisons are expensive.  Inmates should be taken care of accordingly and have suitable living conditions.  To handle this large increase in prisoners, prisons need to be structured and organized financially (Leighton & Selman).  In her book, Alexander (2010) discusses the expansion of the War on Drugs:

Once elected, Clinton endorsed the idea of a federal “three strikes and you’re out” law, which he advocated in his 1994 State of the Union address to enthusiastic applause on both sides of the aisle. The $30 billion crime bill sent to President Clinton in August 1994 was hailed as a victory for the Democrats, who “were able to wrest the crime issue from the Republicans and make it their own.”  The bill created dozens of new federal capital crimes, mandated life sentences for some three-time offenders, and authorized more than $16 billion for state prison grants and expansion of state and local police forces. (p. 55)

It is not just prisons that makes mass incarceration expensive.  Programs and bills that cost billions of dollars with the goal to arrest more people and increase the number of inmates serving life sentences expands the government’s budget relating to the criminal justice system.  Spending this much money on one bill based on deterrence may be a waste of money to some people.  I think this money should be going towards programs to help people stay out of trouble with the law and those who are released from prison or jail to get help with employment or anything they may need after serving their time.  Although this bill is from 25 years ago, the United States is still spending billions of dollars a year on mass incarceration (Rabuy & Wagner, 2017).
