Gratitude.

Birthdays are super special for Z. He agonises for months about what theme he wants. This year he kept oscillating between wanting a Race Car theme, a Dino theme, a Spiderman theme and yes, even a Grand Theft Auto (GTA) theme. Every few days, he would ditch a theme and pick another. This had been going on since March and it did up until last Sunday, the 3rd of August which was his birthday.

As a mum, who is perhaps more excited than her bub about the birthday, I had been in research mode for a while, planning each separate party, so that if he had a change of mind in the last minute as he was prone to do, I would be ready. Some might consider this 'overdoing it' but I can't help it.

Anyways, he finally settled on the race car theme and I strongly feel that it might have been because I put my foot down and said "NO" to his requests for a GTA party. Since a race car is as close as it gets to the GTA theme, I'm pretty sure that's why he went for it.

All through the day his hyper activity was in full throttle, in complete exhibition. From non stop jumping (which is a usual) to stomping on balloons (a new found joy), from swinging on streamers to running through and mauling party props. It did not help that he was constantly sneaking and sampling the sugary treats, which only meant that his hyper activity did not dip. Not even for a second. It also did not escape the little mind that all usual disciplinary actions were on halt in celebration of the little man's big day, and he milked it for all it was worth.

There were moments through the day, I had to reign myself in and be all Zen like and concentrate on just getting through the day. Believe me, when I said he milked it, I meant to say that he milked it dry. He knew it was his birthday and an abundance of streamers, balloons and other decorations only added to his excitement, which was already on overdrive. He woke up running victoriously and excitedly through streamers and he did not stop. Not till the end of the day when the freshly turned 4 year old could no longer take pummeling of adrenalin it has been put through and he went down in a heap of snores and happy dreams while the adults finally sat down for some dinner. And that's when the magic happened. Right there, right before he fell asleep.

I was superbly exhausted by the time we got to our late dinner

Me: Z. Can you please stay still for a while?

Z: But mummy, what is that?

As usual, all requests for slowing down were completely ignored and he proceeded to point out to some obscure thing in some corner and threw half a dozen questions at me.

Me: Z, are you getting sleepy? Do you wanna lie down for a while?

Z: Yeah. I am very tired Mommy.

Me: Ok. Lie down then.

He looks up at me and suddenly gives me a big bear hug, taking me completely by surprise.

Z: Mommy, I had so much fun today. Best time ever.

Having said that he ran off to his daddy and promptly fell asleep.

And just like that, it was all worth it. Everything, including the back aches, I've had the past four years since my C-section. ALL WORTH IT!
