I made this hat:
The patterns I used were Binh BuiThiVan’s Summer Hat and Natalia Kononova’s Spiral Cord Bag Strap (both on Ravelry.)
I didn’t want to use raffia like in the original pattern because of the possibility of it getting wet, so I got the least soft cotton yarn I could find (Sugar n Cream + Loops and Threads EcoCotton).
The stem is crocheted around a wire, which is what the chandelier pendant is dangling from. The little beads were sewn on with fishing line.
I got the pin at Lightbox Expo, but I can’t remember the artist’s name and the exhibitor list is gone. I think they are quite well known though because there was quite a crowd around their booth.

I've been trying to buy a raffia yarn to crochet a sun hat for a few weeks now, and I've put in two orders from two different etsy shops which have confired my order, waited over a week, then cancelled my order because they don't ship to my area. Both were from sponsored stores. Like why are they being promoted to me if they can't even sell to me? So frustrating.

i've been stuck with my sunhat project for a little while now.
the transition from the sides to the brim was nerve-wracking. the raffia got ripped up a bunch and i couldn't even get the hook through until i redid it way looser. now i'm worried it won't be able to handle the weight of the brim... but maybe i can reinforce it? i have some ideas for sort of sowing the angle more closed, or maybe just glue some ribbon there. i'll just have to be careful to not make it too tight.
turns out i've emptied all of the convenient shops of the black raffia i've been using, and i will need like. triple of what i thought i'd need to get a wide enough brim. but! since it's a silly lumpy summer hat anyway, i've decided to just do rings of saturn kind of stripes. made myself buy a bit more yarn than i need so that i won't get stuck in the future and can just. get on with it. if there's extra, i'll make some cute lil baskets!
i also figured out that i have more than enough fabric for my summer wizard robe. found instructions for how to make a patternless cardigan, too. i'll just have to figure out the measurements for the squares and which type of sleeves i want to make, and then i should be able to use my friend's serger to make it super easy for me!
though i might actually first focus on my gym bag project. currently procrastinating going to the gym. i hate the tote i currently use to transport my shit. i hate that it's time for the high volume workout this time, but i love that it's the last one before i can start raising the weights! still going to go ridiculously slow with them (because i need to regain my mobility and the strength of the small supporting muscles first dgdfgsdg) but always feels good when STR Number Go Up!

i had to frog that hat so many times lol working with raffia really takes some getting used to. my tension already tends to lean too tight and with such stiff yarn it was even more difficult than usual to loosen up my stitches. the bottom of the bucket is slightly warped as a result but you can't tell if i wrap a scarf around that part heehee<3

National Handbag Day
National Handbag Day is an annual celebration observed on October 10th of every year. Handbags are indeed a vital thing for any women. Their love for handbags is neither accurate nor approximate. It is perhaps innumerable. Why not a day for this fashion accessory? Celebrate every handbag on the National Handbag Day.
“To me, accessorizing is the most fun part of an outfit. While I don’t think you can’t rely on accessories to make a dress that isn’t working work, I do love jewelry and handbags more than anything.” – Anna Kendrick
History of National Handbag Day
The National Handbag Day was first celebrated in the year 2013. It was created by Purseblog, a handbag industry with a blog that follows the fashion and handbag. Handbag Day acknowledges the importance of handbags in daily life and the fashion. A handbag is a purse or pouch often used by women to hold personal items. It is a handled medium-to-large bag that is often fashionably designed in many shapes and sizes. The celebration of the day recognizes that a handbag as an essential item of an individual’s closet. A handbag is a larger accessory to holds objects beyond currency, like personal items. The purse is a term that originally refers a small bag for holding coins. It is used even now to refer to a small coin bag in British English. They were made of soft fabric or leather. It was worn by men as often as ladies.
American English typically uses both purse and handbag interchangeably. A handbag is a term that begins appearing in the early 1900s. It was most often used in referring to men’s hand-luggage initially. During this period women’s bags grew larger and more complex, and the term was attached to the accessory. The Industrial Revolution of England brought the usage of the modern-day purse, clutch, pouch or handbag. The rationing of textiles for World War II during the 1940s led to the manufacturing of handbags made of raffia or crocheted from yarn materials. The oldest known purse dates back to more than 5000 years.
How to Celebrate National Handbag Day
Celebrating the National Handbag Day is very simple. Buy the high-end handbag of your favorite brand on this day. Celebrate the designers who make fashionable handbags of your choice. Do you have a large collection of handbags from vintage style to modern? Then it is a perfect day to show the world.

Material Research
I considered several natural weaving materials and their ecological impact for this project. Ultimately each of the options below had its pros and cons, and could be used depending on the texture we decided would work best for the sculptures.
Raffia (What is Raffia? What is the difference with jute, rattan, or straw? – TANORA)
1.2m to 1.5m length
Naturally waxed and water resistant, meaning long lifespan but organic degradation
Easy to work with for project (soft, thin, weave-able, can be woven with gaps to allow for plants to grow through)
Incredibly water efficient growth
Watch out for synthetic replicas (polypropylene)
Most ethically sourced from Madagascar (trees only grow in specific conditions, preserves cultural heritage)
Low carbon footprint
Hemp Yarn (Carbon footprint and oxygen footprint assessment of hemp yarn | International Journal of Global Warming (inderscienceonline.com))
Longer lengths
Long durability
Sourced from many locations around world
Low growth maintenance and water requirements
Potentially breaks down faster than raffia, as it is not water resistant
May be stiffer and more difficult to weave at times
Does have some carbon emissions in the yarn spinning phase but is otherwise low impact
Hemp Rope (Hemp as a potential raw material toward a sustainable world: A review - ScienceDirect)
Similar to yarn but thicker, coarser and more durable
May be suitable depending on desired design
Twisted Paper Rope (Benefits Of Using Twisted Paper Rope Handle Than Other Material | by Aaron Henry | Medium)
Shorter durability outdoors
Easily sourced and cheap
Biodegradeable, recyclable and renewable if ethically sourced
Thinner, softer rope alternative
Low carbon footprint, but not as low as hemp

FAS3003 - Artist research - Pi Williams
I have decided to look at the artwork Australian textile artist Pi Williams. She has a background in Fine Arts, mainly working with watercolour, printmaking and acrylics. Currently she prefers to create pieces using yarn & wool with pairing fabrics such as tulle, leather & raffia. This artist intends to research the boundaries of these techniques through joining textured wools with vivid thread, negative space and mixed media materials to produce suggestive & noticeable sculptural pieces.
What interests me with Williams' work is that she creates these macro details within her motifs on a larger scale. This will link to my narrative and samples as there are lots of embellishment on a carnival costume such as jewels, diamantes and sequins that includes colour, shape and textures; this will be a good starting point to draw motifs for prints or produce a weave from the inspired shapes.

In response to this artist, I would like to try two different samples to experiment this style:
First sample - this would consist of zooming in on my chosen objects and painting or drawing the macro details to create patterns or motifs for screen printing or digital prints.
Second sample - making a circular weave and adding in the macro details on top to include more texture.

Coiling Basics
Coiling is a basketry technique that involves wrapping and stitching lengths of material around a central core material to create variety of complex forms starting from a circle or oval base.
Refer to the coiling zine about the coiling process as you are exploring this process. This handout was created from selections from the book “Contemporary Basketry” by Sharon Robinson.

The paper core typically used to make coiled baskets. This is just one of many different materials that you can use to make a coiled basket. What else could you use to coil a basket? How could a meaningful choice of material enhance the concept of your work?
a few basic diagrams of the coiling process, showing how to get started and the basic figure 8 stitch (Figure Q-Figure S).
Heres a youtube video that shows the coiling process with yarn. We will be using raffia in class, but yarn or many other contemporary materials could also work to wrap and sew around your core material.
Here is another link that demonstrates the coiling process with step by step pictures. If you find a particular video or webpage helpful to learning this process, why not collect the resource for yourself by posting to your own blog? That way if you want to revisit the process in the future, you can pick up where you left off quickly and easily, a great use of the blog structure for your future benefit.
