Rohan Adukia arrested in gold smuggling case

Businessman Rakesh Adukia’s son Rohan Adukia has been arrested in connection with the recent gold smuggling case.

According to a source, the Department of Immigration (DoI) arrested Adukia from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu upon his return from India on Friday.

The DoI had blacklisted Adukia on the request of the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI).

The source said that the DoI is preparing to hand him over to the DRI.

Police had raided Rakesh Adukia’s house some days ago.

Also on Friday, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police arrested two Chinese nationals -- Li Jialin and Liu Fuyan -- from the TIA at 8 AM. The two were scheduled to fly to China by a Himalaya Air flight at 9 AM.

The CIB of Nepal Police had earlier written to the Department of Immigration to blacklist them.

The CIB arrested them from the airport after receiving information that they were about to fly to China. Their role in the gold smuggling case has not been disclosed yet.

With Adukia’s arrest, the number of people arrested in the case has now reached 21. Among them, customs agent Rukmina Subba has been released on guarantee as she suffers from cancer and needs to undergo treatment.

The DRI had arrested Suresh Tamang, known as Naresh, on July 26 and Belgian national Dawa Tsering on July 30.

Three staffers of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Customs Office – Santosh Chand, Kumar Dhakal, and Saroj Shrestha – have also been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the scam. The Department of Customs had already suspended them citing negligence before the DRI arrested them.

Customs agents Yadav Shankar Parajuli and Sudarshan Gautam, Global Pvt Ltd promoter Pushkar Raj Bhatta, Krishna Shrestha, Rajan Shrestha, taxi driver Ashok Lama, customs agent Rajendra Rai, Ready Trade Pvt Ltd promoter Dilip Bhujel and his maternal uncle Ram Kumar Bhujel, Harka Raj Rai, Indian national Thapten Tsering and Chinese national Lin Zeqiang have also been arrested in the case.

The DRI was investigating them under the Revenue Leakage (Investigation and Control) Act. It has handed over the case to the CIB.

A DRI team had confiscated a huge quantity of gold during a cargo inspection on July 18 after it had passed undetected through the airport customs.

The gold, whose total weight is estimated to be nearly 100 kilograms, was brought hidden inside brake shoes for scooters on a Cathay Pacific Airways flight from Hong Kong. The brake shoes were imported by Ready Trade Pvt Ltd.

The seized goods have been sent to the Mint Division of Nepal Rastra Bank to determine the actual weight of the gold. But the gold has yet to be weighed.

Rohan Adukia, two Chinese nationals arrested in gold smuggling case released

Businessman Rohan Adukia and two Chinese nationals who were arrested on Friday in connection with the recent gold smuggling case have been released from custody.

According to Deputy Inspector General Kuber Kadayat, central spokesperson for Nepal Police, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) released Chinese nationals Li Jialin and Liu Fuyan on Saturday.

The Department of Immigration (DoI) had arrested the two from the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu on Friday morning and handed them over to the CIB. They were scheduled to fly to China on a Himalaya Air flight at 9 AM. The Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI) had earlier requested the DoI to blacklist them.

They were released after they were not found to be involved in the gold smuggling case.

Businessman Adukia was also released on Saturday. The DoI had arrested him at the DRI’s request soon after his arrival from India on an Air Indigo flight on Friday afternoon. But he was freed after the DRI and the CIB refused to take him into custody.

Police said that there was no need to keep him in custody.

He has been released on the condition that he will appear before immigration authorities whenever summoned.

Rohan is the son of the absconding businessman Rakesh Adukia, who is one of the prime suspects in the gold smuggling case.

There are currently 17 people in CIB’s custody over their alleged involvement in the gold smuggling case. Customs agent was released on guarantee a few days ago as she is suffering from throat cancer and needs to undergo treatment.

NEET-UG 2024 Verdict: Supreme Court to Announce Detailed Judgment on Exam Cancellation Plea Today

Supreme Court of India is set to release its detailed judgment on Friday, explaining its decision not to cancel the NEET-UG 2024 examination.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India will release its detailed judgment on Friday, explaining its decision not to cancel the NEET-UG 2024 examination. This follows the court's rejection of a plea for a re-test on July 23. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud emphasized the significant repercussions of conducting a fresh exam, noting that it would impact over 24 lakh students who had already taken the test. He highlighted that such a move would disrupt the admission schedule and cause cascading effects on the medical entrance exam and its subsequent counselling process.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has intensified its probe into alleged irregularities surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 examination. On Thursday, the CBI filed its first chargesheet, charging 13 individuals under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant), 380 (theft in dwelling house), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property), 420 (cheating), and 109 (abetment).

Names Of NEET Paper Leak Accused The chargesheet names the following accused: Nitish Kumar, Amit Anand, Sikander Yadvendu, Ashutosh Kumar-1, Roshan Kumar, Manish Prakash, Ashutosh Kumar-2, Akhilesh Kumar, Avdesh Kumar, Anurag Yadav, Abhishek Kumar, Shivnandan Kumar, and Ayush Raj. The case was initially registered at Shastri Nagar Police Station in Patna and later transferred to the CBI on June 23. To date, the CBI has arrested 40 individuals, including 15 apprehended by Bihar Police, and conducted searches at 58 locations.

Last week, the CBI revealed in an official statement that the NEET-UG 2024 question paper was illicitly accessed from the Oasis School in Hazaribagh on the morning of May 5. The key figure behind this act was identified as Pankaj Kumar, also known as Aditya or Sahil, one of the masterminds in the case. The theft was reportedly carried out with the connivance of the Hazaribagh NTA City Coordinator cum Principal of Oasis School and the Centre Superintendent cum Vice Principal of the same institution.

The investigation is ongoing, with several other suspects already in police or judicial custody. The CBI has stated that supplementary chargesheets will be filed as further investigation into these suspects and other aspects of the case progresses.

29 cops suspended on extortion charges in UPs Mirzapur

Uttar Pradesh Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhinandan took action against 29 police officers, who had been exploiting their positions in various police stations for years, by relieving them from duty. This action came two days after 18 people, including 16 touts and two UP Police constables, were arrested for their alleged involvement in extortion of money from truck drivers on the UP-Bihar border. The Mirzapur SP initiated this action after receiving complaints of illegal extortion and other misconduct involving these officers. SP Abhinandan stated that there were consistent complaints regarding illegal extortion and mistreatment of complainants in police stations against the suspended officers. In response to these complaints, a total of 29 officers have been suspended from duty.
