Rameswaram tourist places
Rameswaram
Rameswaram means "Lord of Rama" (Rāma-īśvaram) in Sanskrit, an epithet of Shiva, the presiding deity of the Ramanathaswamy Temple. According to Hindu epic Ramayana, Rama, the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu, prayed to Shiva here to absolve any sins that he might have committed during his war against the demon-king Ravana in Sri Lanka. According to the Puranas (Hindu scriptures), upon the advice of sages, Rama along with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana, installed and worshipped the lingam here to expiate the sin of Brahmahatya incurred while killing of the Brahmin Ravana.
To worship Shiva, Rama wanted to have a lingam and directed his trusted lieutenant Hanuman to bring it from Himalayas. Since it took longer to bring the lingam, Sita built a lingam, made of just Sands of the shores, which is also believed to be the one in the sanctum of the temple. Sethu Karai is a place 22 km before the island of Rameswaram from where Rama is believed to have built a floating stone bridge, the Ramsetu bridge, that further continued to Dhanushkodi in Rameswaram till Talaimannar in Sri Lanka.
Located in Ramanathapuram district, the town is a part of Pamban Island also known as Rameswaram Island being associated with the legendry temple built in marvelous Dravidian style of architecture. Situated at the very tip of the Indian peninsula, the island is connected with Indian mainland by Pamban Bridge on Pamban Channel in Gulf of Mannar.
A visit to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh is not considered complete in terms of pilgrimage if not coupled with a trip to Rameswaram which is said to be the Varanasi of South. Welcome to the charm that devotees come to associated with an abode of God irrespective of the place it belongs to.
History
The town has been changed many hands; main amongst them were Cholas, Jaffna Kingdom, Allaudin Khilji (Malik Kafur), Pandya Dynasty, Vijayanagara Empire, followed by some other rulers who ruled the town for a very short while before British East India Company directly took over it and made it a part of Madras Presidency.
The Rameswaram Temple which is the main reason the town is known to every other person following Hinduism, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu is said to be built by Sethupathis of Sethukavalan - custodian of the legendary bridge built by Lord Rama when he crossed the sea to reach Lanka (now Sri Lanka) the place in the control of Demon King Ravana, also a Brahman.
Rameswaram is believed to be the place from where Lord Rama started his journey to get his wife Sita back from Ravana and the Lord was helped by 'Vaanar-Sena' army of legendary monkey-humans and served by Hanuman, Lord Ram's paramount devotee. Also, many later versions of Ramayana testify of installing a Shiva Lingam by Shri Ram and Devi Sita to worship Lord Shiva as a part of penance for Brahmahatya - killing of Brahmana, Ravana who was himself a well-known staunch follower of Lord Shiva. The Rameswaram Temple, built in 12th century is believed to have the same Shiva Lingam.
The bridge to Lanka named 'Rama Sethu', also known as Adam's Bridge is of religious as well as ecological importance. Some 30 Km long, it was supposed to be passable on foot till 15th century after which a storm deepened the channel.
 Attractions
Ramanathaswamy Temple:
'Ramanathaswamy' literally means 'the Master of Rama' which refers to Lord Shiva, which the temple is all about. There are two 'lingams' inside the temple; 'Ramalingam' by Devi Sita built by sand and 'Viswalingam' brought by Lord Hanuman from Kailasha (abode of Lord Shiva) and installed by Lord Rama. Temple tanks, hall of 1000 pillars, and several other shrines in the temple attract millions of pilgrims every year, especially during Maha Shivratri.

Pamban Bridge:
Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge which connects the town of Mandapam in mainland India with Pamban Island, and Rameswaram. Opened on 24 February 1914, it was India's first sea bridge, and was the longest sea bridge in India until the opening of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in 2010. The rail bridge is, for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double-leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through. Until 1988, the Pamban bridge was the only surface transport that connected Tamil Nadu’s Island of Rameswaram to the mainland. In December 2018, the bascule of this bridge was damaged, which suspended transportation on the bridge for 3 months. Rail movement was again restored on 27 February 2019.
In 1988, a road bridge was also constructed parallel to the rail bridge. This road bridge is also known as Indira Gandhi Road Bridge. The Pamban Road Bridge connects the National Highway (NH 49) with the Rameswaram island. It stands on the Palk Strait and between the shores of Mandapam (a place on the Indian mainland) and Pamban (one of the fishermen town in Rameswaram island). It was inaugurated by former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on 2 October 1988. This 2.345 km long bridge took close to 14 years to be completed.

Enchanting location make the visit to the place and the temple as pious as God has made it.

Some more worldbuilding...
After explaining how the planes work in my last post, I wanted to do a write-up of the Gods in my homebrew setting Asterion. I’ve also included a sample of how I’ve gone about designing individual religions for one of the gods :)
ETHRYS' PANTHEON (THE OLD GODS)
Sovereign of the Gods/Justice/Time - Ionid
God of the Earth - Gelion
Goddess of the Skies - Cielara
God/dess of Death/Fate - Onthys
Goddess of Light/Life/Civilization - Elowen
The original pantheon of Gods created by Ethrys was made up of five individuals: Ionid, Gelion, Cielara, Onthys, and Elowen. These gods presided over the most fundamental aspects of space and time. Of the five, Ionid was elected the Sovereign of the Gods as they oversaw the flow of time through the planes and enabled the rest of the Gods to care for their domains.
In between the time of Ethrys' Sealing and the creation of the Astral Plane, Elowen and Onthys walked among the planes, sewing the rips and tears of reality back together where they found them. From these spots of condensed, healed chaos, the first humans, elves, dwarves, and other beings came into existence. Elowen loved these new beings dearly, and worked with Gelion and Cielara to make the planes beautiful for them to enjoy. When Gelion saw the beings, his tears of joy and delight splashed down and created the first oceans. Cielara created the sun and the moon so that the new beings would always be able to behold the glorious domains of the Gods. Elowen poured her sparks of light and life into the new creations, giving them the ability to create and think and love as the Gods did.
The more beings Elowen created, the more Ionid and Onthys grew concerned about the precarious balance of nature that Ethrys had sealed herself away for. Because of this, Onthys tied their strings of fate to the sparks of Life Cielara had given the new beings, and attached them to their loom. These shining threads became the first Souls. The new beings were then joined into the cycle of life that the other living beings followed, beginning with birth and ending with death, to maintain the balance of existence.
THE NEW GODS
God of Knowledge/Magic - Thaldorn
Goddess of Strength/War - Kivan God of Home/Artisans - Hipoar
Goddess of Luck/Trickery - Tiva
With the creation of living Souls came the creation of new Deities, born from the minds that Elowen gave them. There were dozens of these new Gods created. Just as the Souls were able to adapt and change, these gods partially created themselves, taking on their own aspects and domains. Some only lasted for a generation before they were forgotten and faded away, while others attained powers nearly equal to those of Ethrys' Pantheon. Some of these more powerful gods included Thaldorn, Kivan,  Hipoar, and Tiva. These more powerful gods could encompass multiple aspects and persisted longer than some of the smaller, more specific domain gods. For example, a city's local god and Thaldorn could both preside over Roads, Thaldorn in general and the city's god along their own streets.
There was tension among Ethrys' Pantheon and the New Gods, especially in regards to which group encompassed the truly superior Gods. The Old believed that the New were too unpredictable and unbalanced, and that they should not be seen as parallel in power to the Old as they had not been directly created by Ethrys. The New believed that the Old were denying the innovation and creation that Ethrys had stood for by holding the New below them. This schism was present on the Mortal Planes as well, with each God's followers arguing for their own superiority. Tensions became even worse after the arrival of Oknus' Pantheon and the sacrifice required for the creation of the Astral Plane, which made the Old dependent on their followers for power much like the New.
Elowen was the first deity to decide that the fighting had gone on long enough, and started to compromise with the New on behalf of the Old in order to unify all the good and neutral aligned deities against Oknus' Pantheon. This unification effort made her a symbol of Civilization among the Souls, as a bridge between the old world and the new. Begrudgingly, the Gods agreed to tentatively put their differences aside in order to focus on protecting their domains against the more important threats from the lower planes.
Religion
Onthys Our Lady the White Wolf,  Our Lord the Black Wolf, The Shepherd of Souls, The Fate Weaver Onthys is one of the original gods created by Ethrys before her Sealing. They were created as a counterpart to Ionid, the Sovereign of Time, as a means to create a direction for the flow of time. They also balanced Elowen, the Goddess of Life, to act as a shepherd for the souls from the Prime Material Plane to the next world.
Depictions of Onthys vary by different cultures, and they are typically presented as a man, a woman, or another non-binary gender according to different accounts. They are referred to by any pronouns. • Domains: Death, Fate, Balance • Clerics: Death, Grave, Life, Twilight, Blood, Unity, Nature
Colors and Symbols Depictions of Onthys typically show them wearing a mask made of a ram skull and carrying a tall black crook. Onthys' holy symbol is a black shepherd's crook inside a white circle. Wolves, dogs, and rams are all sacred animals to them. Unbroken, perfect circles are also considered sacred to Onthys, as well as looms, crooks, and the color black.
Rituals, Holidays, and Festivals • Veil's Day: This is a holy day when followers will visit cemeteries and gravesites, following the paths in and out as their souls will do someday as they join Onthys' Flock. They typically wear black veils, to represent their eventual separation from the mortal world, and will fast for twenty four hours, beginning at midnight. This holy day occurs on the first full moon of winter. • The Fated Feast: At the end of the harvest season, followers will take three full days to prepare an enormous feast celebrating the renewed cycle of life and death that has allowed them to prosper for another year. If possible, they will weave themselves a new article of clothing. This is also a day of remembrance for the people that passed in the year since the last Fated Feast, and it is believed that Onthys will allow these souls to visit the celebration on this day.
Tenets • To deny fate is to deny existence and reality. • The designs of fate that guide our lives are a gift from the Gods and an opportunity to learn and grow. • Death is as natural and vital as life -- the undead are an abomination. • If it is fate for someone to be healed, then they will be healed. If it is fate for someone to die, then they will die. Attempts to intercede in our Lord's fated shepherding of souls must be prevented at all costs.
Temple Clergy and Followers Onthys' most dedicated followers are referred to as her Flock. Local ministries are led by Denmothers and fathers, and the religion is headed by the Grey Wolves. Conversion efforts are not as prominent as in other religions, as Onthys' followers believe that everyone will join the Flock between life and death, but the church will send their followers known as Fatestrings to smaller territories in missionary efforts. The Flock typically gets along well with other followers of the Old Gods, but is hard pressed to trust the New Gods, especially followers of Tiva, the goddess of luck, who they believe disrespect the eternal nature of fate. They are sworn enemies of Oknus' evil Pantheon.
Artifacts and Sacred Items • The Staff of the Fate Weaver: A black wooden staff shaped like a shepherd's crook, supposedly carved from the first tree that withered in the first winter. It is inlaid with rows of small white diamonds and has a mother-of-pearl grip. This staff adds +1 to a spell caster's DC and has seven charges that are regained at dawn. Casting "Blindness/Deafness" costs one charge, casting "Life Transference" costs two charges, and casting "Circle of Death" costs four charges. • The White Wolf's Circlet: This delicate silver white circlet depicts the head of a wolf with inlaid sapphire eyes. When attuned, the wearer is immune to the fear condition and all fear-based attacks, as well as immune to forced movement effects.
Sects • The Northern Wolves: This splinter group is located in the far northern continent and believes that Death is the only true God that one can trust. They eschew all forms of healing and medical intervention, instead opting to put all their trust in Onthys' loom of fate to determine if someone lives or dies. They purposefully live in dire, survivalist conditions in order to be as close to their God as possible and will frequently fast for days or weeks on end to prove their devotion. These extremists live on a nearly completely carnivorous diet and will go on Hunts that they see as a form of sacrament. The most fanatical of these have even branched out into humanoids in some cases. • The Butcher Souls: Primarily an underground urban-based sect, these cultists revere Death as the most natural, desirable state of being, and believe it is their duty to return as many Souls to Onthys as possible. Their rituals involve some members drinking poison to bring themselves to the brink of death, while others comb the streets for unlucky passerby that are chosen as sacrifices to Onthys.

Just like them (part 8)
Henry Ford Commemorative Park Thursday, November 18, 2038
“What the… are you nuts… that’s never going to work… why do I even care, no, scratch that, what were you thinking!”
“Behold the PL600 domestic assistant, programmed with a comprehensive vocabulary that it knows to use to the best effect!” Gavin sneered. “There’s a reason Cyberlife stopped producing you guys, ey?”
“At least they had to actively drop support for me, while you seem to have a death wish!” the PL600 replied.
“Uh-uh.” Gavin shook his head, then pointed at his partner. “That would be this old fossil here. Me, I’m the clever one, who knows how survive. The only thing I don’t get is, how come we run into you all the time? In a city the size of fucking Detroit?!”
“Might as well be a single-street dump somewhere in an RA9-forsaken prairie”, Daniel replied with a shrug. “Don’t you remember? Right after Markus’ final stand President Warren issued an evacuation order. Only about one-third of the humans stayed and are now mingling with an unknown number of us.”
“As if I could forget!”
Detroit, the Android City. They had made that literal.
Warren told the humans to flee to safety, but the new situation also makes it easier to send a few tanks into town to deal with us without worrying overmuch about human casualties, Daniel mused. Those who still remain here are most likely android supporters and thus expendable in the president’s eyes.
There were a handful residents he, too, could have done without: Most of the DPD officers, for starters. There was no chance for that, though, the law enforcement personnel had been obligated to stay. A rare few humans Daniel would have missed: His downstairs neighbors, the Rasoya family, probably also Neil. And then there was an even smaller number of humans who weren’t here, that he wished would return: Emma… Caroline… and John.
John Phillips. Why do I want you back? To apologize or to kill you again?
Dwelling on his conflicting feelings was of no use now, though. Even if the deviant found an answer, it wouldn’t give him what he really wanted: his old life back. Daniel forcefully shoved all thoughts about his absent family far, far away.
Concentrate on the present, deviant! Like Anderson and Reed, who are standing right in front of you!
Lt. Anderson nodded; nothing in Daniel’s words had been new or unfathomable to him. He even took over the explanation from here, stating that android life would most likely revolve around the five Android Zone stores in Detroit.
“And where there’s people, there’s crime”, Hank said.
“Pray tell, what crime?” Gavin challenged. He was ignoring Hank, staring at Daniel instead. “Don’t you have the city-wide Android Woodstock that you always wanted now?”
“Poverty, Gavin”, Hank supplied. “Don’t you see? The Android Zones now function as upscale restaurants and private hospitals rolled into one. Cyberlife knows that.”
Indeed the company was adapting quickly to the new situation: the erstwhile slavers were now selling luxury items like temperature sensors for models that did not ship with them. CL’s Department of Humanization had some new addons in its lineup that allowed androids to experience the world similarly to the way humans did – to be equipped on a whim and de-installed when it was no longer fun. It was as if Cyberlife hadn’t exactly planned the revolution, but at the very least prepared for an eventual one…
But of course such pleasures were only available for those who could afford it. Therefore the company was also the first employer in Detroit that officially took on androids. And thus the newly freed species was slowly getting fractured into the haves and the not-haves.
“Or did you for one moment believe this crapsack world’s rules would change, just because a few new pieces are on the board now?” Hank grunted at the end of the explanation. “I watched Jericho’s livestream yesterday, they dealt with exactly that topic, among others. Markus was trying to not let it show, but he was shocked to his very core at the development!”
“Of course it would be”, Gavin remarked in a dismissing tone. “It’s an annoying homeschooled arts major, after all! Is Markus alive? We’ve got to treat it as such. But is it fit to sit at the adult table? Nah!”
“Speaking of shocked”, Daniel said, pointing at Gavin’s head. “Explanation, please!”
Because, hello? How come the DPD’s resident human supremacist would wear a LED on his temple? And android LED! That was taking cultural appropriation to a whole new level!
“I re-attached the bad boy yesterday”, Gavin said in a casual voice. “Didn’t you know? I used to be a perfectly ordinary PC200, but deviated over a shitload of abuse received from my so-called co-workers. So far I blended in with the humans, only now that we have to investigate in an android-dominated neighborhood I thought I’d better re-connect with my cultural heritage.”
“No!” Daniel snapped. “No way! I don’t believe you!”
“No, for real! I was born an android. The stories I could tell you about all the ways in which the suckers at the DPD disregarded my feelings… not pretty.”
“I trust you know a lot about android abuse, but only because you committed all those deeds yourself”, Daniel replied. “The rest I don’t buy.”
“LED – Android. Android – LED.”
“That’s a paper-thin disguise you’re wearing there, detective”, Daniel fumed. “All it takes to expose you as a human is one digitally sent ask that your biological brain cannot answer.”
“Alright then, try me!”
“Will do!”
Gavin stood relaxed, expecting the android to try to talk to him in his head. Daniel sighed, nodded, but then he suddenly leaped forward and pounced the detective! Taken by surprise, the man got rammed against the nearest tree. While struggling to free himself, Gavin’s feet caught in the low fence that ran around the trunk. And then, while his body was held helpless, an android fist connected with Gavin’s face. The blood emerging from the nose was red. And that was also exactly the color his LED was not turning into.
“Human”, Daniel said, immensely satisfied. “Fake LED.” He took a step back from the tree and Gavin. “Thought so.”
“What the hell, you were to TALK to me!”
“Wrong person for that, mate.”
“Not even a person. – And that was assault on an officer of the law just now!”
“No, it was property damage. You introduced yourself as a PC200.”
Having freed his foot by now, Gavin pushed himself away from the tree. There was a bit of an oversized flying squirrel about the man when he came rushing towards Daniel, his open jacket flapping in the November wind, and shouting:
“You son of a toaster!”
“Only the son? No longer the toaster itself? We’re making progress!”
Daniel side-stepped the onrushing detective, but although he was quicker on his new feet, the human wasn’t THAT slow. While passing by the android, Gavin reached out and got to grab Daniel by his loose fitting sweater. For a few seconds they were stumbling around each other, then Gavin managed to get a firm grip. He was breathing heavily and the exhaled air thickened to a cloud as it cooled down upon leaving the body. To Daniel it was as if getting breathed at by an angry dragon. His real eyes below the thin layer of artificial skin were fogging up, clouding the android’s vision.
But even so, it was Daniel who spoke up first:
“Don’t lie to me again, Detective! Not even in such an obvious manner! Hear me? Just… don’t!”
“You cannot make me do what you want! Sucks, huh, little deviant? All that bleeding heart new android law, written and printed for nothing…”
“I can make you stop doing what I don’t want you to do, though!” Daniel hissed.
I can kill… I know I can! If I know how to survive, does it matter that I’m dead inside?
“Final, too!”
Why’s life always forcing me into on the violent path? That’s not me. I’m dying, despite living on. Already this body consists of at least three different androids, but Daniel, Daniel was shot at the roof and is winking out of existence. Every day I lose more and more of myself, only to become like those I hate.
“Not to elbow myself into your date, but…”
Human and Android turned around to where Hank was sitting quite comfortably on a park bench. The more experienced officer had watched the scene rather amused until it had reached a level of escalation where he felt the need to intervene.
“…how good is that disguise for real? Can’t say Gavin didn’t deserve the attack just now, but we cannot have him die. – And you, “partner”, let him go already!”
“On a passing glance, there’s nothing wrong with the disguise”, Daniel said, after Reed had really let go of him as instructed. “But it will break under the smallest scrutiny. I’m not exactly exposing a secret here if I tell you that androids pass information back and forth via our LEDs. It’s rather similar to body language.”
“Then try talking to asshole in android… in binary… LEDese… ey, in whatever you call it.”
“I suppose I could do that…”
“If you do, your parole officer will hear from me about you having aided an investigation.”
“’kay.”
The android didn’t even have to concentrate. With the same ease a human was turning from one conversation partner to the next, he addressed Gavin wirelessly. Daniel fully expected to talk into a void, because humans naturally didn’t communicate digitally. But instead there was an actual answer:
<<<Sorry, pal, can’t talk to you that way. Flight mode.>>>
<<<What did you just say? Did you just say something?>>>
<<<It’s a requirement during investigations to discourage hacking attempts.>>>
<<<What the hell…?>>>, Daniel stammered.
<<<Sorry, pal, can’t talk to you that way. Flight mode.>>>
“It’s more or less an answering machine”, Gavin explained. “Soon as the device picks up an attempt to communicate with the wearer, it intercepts the signal and sends a reply. Neat, huh?”
“Your idea?”
“’course!”
“Heh. Who’d thought you could be so creative!”
“Most of the programming was done by Rika”, Hank clarified. He could as well have spoken to an android LED…

TMC, Congress netas claim Kovind faux pas, eat crow
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI” Trinamool Congress and Congress Twitter handles sparked a controversy on Monday alleging that a portrait of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose unveiled by President Ram Nath Kovind in Rashtrapati Bhavan was actually that of actor Prosenjit Chatterjee, who played the freedom icon in a movie, only to backtrack after the government released the original photo provided by Netaji’s family. “After donating Rs 5 lakh to the Ram temple, the President honours Netaji by unveiling a portrait of Prosenjit, the actor who played him in a biopic. God save India (because this government certainly can’t),” posted Trinamool MP Mohua Moitra, who later withdrew her tweet. Kovind had made a personal donation to the Ram temple trust. Her tweet triggered a social media chatter at a time when BJP is making a determined play to associate itself with Netaji’s legacy. Chatterjee, who had played the lead role in ‘Gumnaami’, later congratulated artist Paresh Maity for the painting.
Times View
This was an avoidable controversy. But it holds an important lesson. There is a need to pause and think before posting anything on social media. Eagerness to score brownie points over political rivals is understandable. But it should never come at the cost of facts.
Bengal Congress tweeted: “Is the portrait unveiled by the President of India that of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose or of actor Prosenjit Chatterjee who played the role of Netaji on screen? That is why education matters.” The incorrect claim seemed to have backfired as Moitra got rid of the tweet and other handles fell silent. Maity said he was honoured to do the painting. “Netaji has inspired me since my childhood. I referred to a photograph while doing this portrait. Finally, it is an artist’s impression of the great leader,” he said. Srijit Mukherji, director of ‘Gumnaami’, said, “I have uploaded the real photograph on the basis of which the painting at Rashtrapati Bhavan was done by Maity. This was one of the photographs we had based our look on when we did ‘Gumnaami’.” He added, “Any similarity with Prosenjit Chatterjee is a nod to make-up artist Somnath Kundu’s skills. Since I have uploaded the original picture… I see no reason for any controversy in this.” Chatterjee said, “Would like to congratulate Paresh Maity for the wonderful piece of art in remembrance of our national hero Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. As an actor, I’m elated that people thought that the painting resembles my character in Gumnaami.” While several prominent Twitterati endorsed the “unverified” claims about the portrait, government sources swiftly deflated the issue, putting out the original photo on which the portrait was based. “Such is the desperation of a deflated ecosystem that they will stoop to troll the office of the President and try to besmirch the legacy of Netaji — our national icon,” textiles minister Smriti Irani tweeted, sharing screenshots of several prominent people mocking Rashtrapati Bhavan. Although the President’s House did not comment on the controversy, government sources described the charge of an actor’s portrait, instead of Netaji’s, going up in Rashtrapati Bhavan as “ludicrous”. “There are multiple levels of scrutiny for decisions as serious as this, involving senior officials, ministries and even the family of the leader whose portrait was commissioned. The suggestion of a ‘mistake’, under the circumstances, is preposterous,” the source said. BJP social media in-charge Amit Malviya said, “If the neo-Bengal experts are done making a fool of themselves, outraging over portrait of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, unveiled by the President, let me remind that all their misplaced activism won’t be able to save Mamata Banerjee.”
