Steppin’ Out With The Europe ’72 Cousins – Songs From The Never-Recorded Post-American Beauty Studio Album

Ramble On Rose (12/30/77 – Winterland Arena • San Francisco, CA)

The period of time between the albums, American Beauty and Wake of the Flood, was a very fruitful one for the Garcia-Hunter songwriting team, as they continued to explore the theme of “old, weird America.” Much of the material that was written appeared on the live albums, Skull & Roses and Europe ’72, but sadly, many songs – “Bertha,” “Wharf Rat,” “He’s Gone,” “Tennessee Jed,” “Brown-Eyed Women,” and “Ramble On Rose” – never received the studio-album treatment. Hunter reportedly hoped the latter three tracks would complete a trilogy begun with Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty, but unfortunately it never happened.

The characters and imagery Hunter created in these songs is amazing – Frankenstein, Wolfman Jack, Jack the Ripper, Jack and Jill, Jack Jones, Delilah Jones, Daddy, Mama and Papa, Charley Fogg, Tennessee, New York City, Jericho, Bigfoot County. It’s all woven together so well. For me, these songs are like cousins. I can never think of one without thinking about the other two, which is why I featured them together today. The versions that I selected are among the highest-octane 70’s Dead you’ll hear. I’m sorry that the “Tennessee Jed” is the same version that was used by dead.net in last month’s 30 Days of Dead project. I try to avoid picking the same versions. However, my picks are finalized long before November 1st, so I never know if I am duplicating the “official” projects that take place a month before mine. This is the first time that happened. Not bad for 10 years! Besides, I like to think it sounds better here! Ha!

It’s All Over Now, Ramble On Rose

9/20/90 – Madison Square Garden, New York, NY

The unexpected death of Brent Mydland sent the Grateful Dead into a tailspin. Rather than take the time to mourn, regroup and find a suitable replacement, the band opted for the “the show must go on.” Perhaps it’s what they needed to do at the time to get though their grief. But all decisions have consequences – especially those that are made in a time of crisis and/or haste. Therefore, it came as a surprise to nobody that the first shows with new keyboard player, Vince Welnick, were somewhat average. On September 15th keyboardist Bruce Hornsby joined the band at Madison Square Garden and everything changed. That is not a dig at Vince as much as it is a testament to Bruce’s enormous talent and leadership abilities. These shows are legendary for their epic jams and varied set lists. The band gained momentum each night leading to the tour closer on September 20th. Though revered for its stunning post-drums sequence, this entire show is a beast from start to finish. It’s easy to overlook some of the treasures in the first set that were left on the cutting floor of Road Trips Volume 2, Number 1. Listen to how Weir belts out the verses of this absolutely fierce rendition of “It’s All Over Now.” One can’t help but notice how Bruce’s masterful piano work is the catalyst for the rest of the band. His solo on this one is incredible. The next song, “Ramble On Rose,” takes on anthem-like qualities. The frenzied East Coast crowd sings along and eats up the reference to New York City which only serves to push Garcia to sing his heart out. While it was not the same without Brent, the band and audience discovered that the same highs could still be reached.
