Rammstein 2004 MTV masters - part 10 - translation

(the previous part ended with Till talking about their songs and pyrotechic)
Paul (P): Because he (Till) has the butt card ("Arschkarte" meaning bad luck) now, because he has to.. sing live practically, and sing a lot more .. so when he fumbles and blows things up and shoots a lot .. then .. it's hard to concentrate on singing. If you talk, "Wuh wuh" (mimics Till grunting and launching a rocket) then you can, but when you sing (starts a singing voice while doing a finger pistol) it is difficult .. to shoot with a flamethrower at the same time.
Voice Over (VO): But Mr Lindemann will have to deal with that. And after all, that wouldn't be the first hurdle Rammstein had to master. After overcoming nationalistic accusations and censorship, after a real and solid band crisis, we can have high hopes that we will have a lot of joy with them far beyond the album "Reise Reise".
Schneider (S): We've been around for 10 years now .. and .. one can't even imagine that it won't be like that anymore .. as said.. as Paulchen (using the diminutive of Paul's name as an endearing term) said before, we had a real crisis in the band before this record. It was really like they say the famous "personal differences". we found a new way, a new variation, like .. eh .. basically a different constellation to make music and meanwhile it's all been so long ago, that one can really speak of the old band, and nobody would like to imagine that at some point ... it will no longer exist anymore.
VO: And let's be honest, a world without Rammstein would be simply imperfect, would be too quiet, would be simply too well behaved and sweet.
P: At the moment I personally like everyone.. really.. I love them all and I'm happy that they are still alive, and I enjoy that we can make music, that there are people who come, are interested in it, we're allowed to publish CDs, so it doesn't really get any better than this .. almost, almost .. I don't know where it would be better.

MTV Masters 2004 Rammstein - thoughts
After doing the translation of the MTV Masters 2004 set, i was left with some lingering thoughts and miscellaneous rambles, so here goes.. ❣in no particular order.
Even though it was primarily a collection of snippets from other/older interviews and some making ofs, i liked how it was put together as a sort of "History of Rammstein up until now", too bad part 2 was missing.
Olli might be just as direct and outspoken as Paul, just not as eloquent, and not as bothered to try and get his opinion out (maybe should do a post on Olli alone...probably..).
The Mutter drama
very likely started with Richard (greatly helped with a bunch of cocaine), but after it also everyone says they didn't want to go on with the same type of music, but wanted to experiment...
afaik Richard is one of the more experimental of the band, so while at some point (understandably) they wanted Richard out, I think he was also needed for the new direction...a "can't live with him, can't live without" situation?
because of that shared feeling, i guess a bandcrisis was unavoidable at some point, and maybe it was brought to a head when it was and they worked through it...if it had lingered another few years maybe they'd have said "we've been doing this long enough now, let's quit"
the years after were better, but i think it's only in the recent 2 or 3 years that the band-together-vibe has really returned, but without the corset they all hated, good for them for hanging in all that time
Paul's occassionally shows his sunny smiles when saying a pointed or sharp remark. If you didn't understand the text you might think he just said something really cute, and all the while is dissing something or someone ☀️ not just a ball of sunshine, but one with stings..
Till often doesn't finish sentences, leaves part of it hanging in the air, starts his next thought. I could imagine he prefers to express himself in writing (his poetry and lyrics) instead of talking, especially talking with a journalist where he probably half expects to be misquoted anyway.
The parts about Germany are all the more interesting knowing that 15 years later they did a song on pretty much exact the topic as it is discussed here. I wouldn't be surprised they had rewatched these old interviews and then came up with using the theme for a song. I also agree that the nazi-era, apart from the atrocities and unspeakable harm it did to people, also very much crippled the germans with guilt, making it impossible to look further away in the past without linking it to the later nazi years (a lot of harmless things from before get a connotation it originally didn't have because the nazi era tainted it) and not being able to move on in the future because the guilt couldn't be let go. If only they'd ever do a 'making of' or interview about the song "Deutschland" i'd be very interested on their thoughts...but i don't have much hope anymore for that...
The scenes with Schneider and Paul on a couch, Paul telling Schneider he's the best actor, Schneider sort of embarrassed reacting and then Paul reconsidering and coming to the conclusion that he's not sure about actor Schneider and talking, but concluding he is really good at looking in certain directions 😁 that must be a prime example of Paulinist remarks, on the one hand cute and funny and generous, and then with one sentence basically pinpointing what Schneider can't do ☀️
Richard admitting having to be unhappy to "create" and sometimes creating drama to trigger that is very revealing, self-aware, unsettling and in a way very sad.. i hope he has come to terms better with it later in life and can also use music from a happier core (like when he writes songs for his children), but deep down, this is his drive and probably still is..
Love Paul's metaphores, he always has one (or three) at hand on any topic. When interviewed along bandmates he's quite restless though, moving around a lot..
Felt sad for Till when he talks about writting stuff off of his soul and afterwards "feeling a bit better, a tiny bit" I wanted to reach in and hug him ❣
At this point in time the Mutter drama is forgiven but not quite forgotten, I think especially Paul will be one to regularly have referred back to it in the first years after the crisis. At least the last couple of years it seems to have been really layed to rest (apart from maybe a little inside joke like old friends have).
Although I always think Schneider is the most levelheaded of the bunch, he does seem to occassionally not "get" what is going on, he seems occassionally vague. That too changed later on, nowadays he seems the most stabil one to interview (well, Flake as well but you can have Flake just reminisce old bandstories and don't have to ask questions 💓)
Schneider for that matter also seems to, by the time of the interview, still remember there was a crisis, but is starting to forget the details, that is probably for the better, no use rehashing everything, but i'd bet some of the others took longer..
Richard is very analytical about what happened and also imo very honest, like mentioning when in the early days they did something funny, that wasn't their intension and only later learned to laugh about themselves. Other people would just have twisted a story like, but he just says it as he thinks it was. He seems very much to say what he feels at the time (not that a next time he won't say something different, but then *that* is what he feels). This must probably also have gotten him into spots of trouble over the years.
Till just lights up (no not like that 😊) when he hears the pyro guys, next time someone manages to catch him for an interview they should just let him give a masterclass on pyrotechnics and ask the questions in between so he doesn't have to bother with the standard interview-situation and just do his own thing.
There is not a lot of Flake in these interviews, while we know now that Flake is actually one of the better storytellers, maybe he was used to let others do the talking at the time, or maybe he was strugling with his alcohol addiction that he talks about in his books and his happy to let tune out.
I think Richard once mentioned in a different interview that he likes to work in a team but isn't a teamplayer; what i take from these interview snippets that he loves the band and very much wants the band to be well.. later he wrote an Emigrate song for them (a band he doesn't tour with, afraid he'd like it better than Rammstein..😙 he a worrier at heart i think..).
Paul gets interviewed in various combinations with bandmates at the time, but i don't think from those years there is a combination of him and Richard. But much much later (2016), when they are interviewed together at the Rammstein in amerika premiere, they completely make up for it and have loads of fun. Ofcourse that's exactly the difference 10+ years can make, but good for them to have given it a shot and finding common ground after all (and even managing to be soft to eachother...aaaww those two 💕)
Schneider casually calling Paul 'Paulchen' as an endearing term and Paul not even batting an eye is very cute, but also shows that they regularly call him that (nothing much to do with his size imo)
Paul having the last word is probably typical, but what a sweet way to end this show, saying he really likes all of them, empasizing again 'really' and he is glad they are all still alive 💗 apart from that that is very cute, i also think they did worry about one or the other bandmate and their lifestyle (in keeping with the interview not naming names here) i hope that part of their wildness has mellowed down by now...the first remark also is a foresight to a 2017 interview with Paul where he mentions they have really nice chemistry at that time...so glad their bandlife did become better over the years.
All in all...the really are a 6-man-marriage...aren't they 💖

Rammstein 2004 MTV masters - part 5 - translation
Next part (because part 4 had such a cliffhanger that i couldn't *not* do this one as well. This one actually has generated german subtitles in the video, but i don't always agree with them 😁 sometimes a "not" is missing for instance which makes a world of difference) again itallic parts are my comments when i feel it adds to the translation
previous parts
part 1
part 2 is unfortunately blocked (maybe there's another link?)
part 3
part 4
youtube
Richard (R): ..and with many, many arguments and many moments where you just didn't believe in it anymore. You can't make an album like 'Mutter' again or twice, no band survives that.
Voice over (VO): The famous third album not only gains a lot of fame and new fans, personal differences within the band also threaten to escalate
Paul (P): After 'Mutter' we had some difficulties internally in the band, as far as the mood was concerned, due to long-term cooperation, which couldn't really be avoided with 6 people, eh.. then some within the band claimed more space than was healthy really.
R: Well I also had to distance myself a bit, eh, I had to go away a bit to see things in reality again that I just couldn't see before because I was too much in this vision of wanting to do things and I probably was too controlling and hardly left any space, somehow, for others and eh.. that was a situation in the band where you.. where it really was on the brink: you continue or you stop because nobody felt really well anymore.
P: Technically all are equal, but in the long run there are those who get annoyed so much by these eternal arguments that they more or less switch off. As a result, the ones who don't notice it that much.. they take over the helm a little more and then at some point it crashed because it didn't work that way, because with us, it somehow is best when everyone participates.
VO: The visitors of the German and European tour and the viewers of the MTV Europe awards 2001 hardly noticed the immense tension within the band
Schneider (S): Because we also had relatively strong personal differences within the band and yes .. it was quite possible that we really don't stay together that long and maybe go separate ways
VO: In the spring of 2001, Rammstein are about to split up
R: What makes Rammstein special to me, what is the good thing about Rammstein and eh .. for me it was important that the band survived.
S: After a certain quiet phase we really considered for a long time: where do we actually want to go
R: That the band feels: okay, she is a democracy again, she, eh .. feels comfortable with what she does
S: We want to try new ways and also to experiment a bit
VO: Old mechanisms seem to have been used up, old ways of working suddenly are just ... old. Rammstein start to take flight forward
S: Above all, we were a bit tired of the usual rhythm.. style
Till (T): I'm a little tired of this, eh, well, I'll say this uniform, monotonous, stuttering around
P: It was actually our damned duty to try something else than this safe, surefire way, again the same old rail.. eh .. to use this tried and tested structure
S: That eh.. didn't sound like it was something immediately. Only when a Till started to write lyrics to it and to sing it, you could imagine that it could be a new way for us and that we could actually go in many directions, and still be faithful to us
P: Especially since now our old trick what we used to do: first softly and then the same theme loudly.. pff.. and then in the chorus the chords are added.. That always works, but actually everyone is doing it now ... so boring .. Linkin Park, every song is dong-dong-du-du-dong-dong-ding-DZZNG (mimics loud instrumental theme) .. it's always: quiet theme, loud theme
P: Everyone should really say Oho!
T: With the last record we just tried to be a little more experimental, and as I said, out of the corset.
VO: So you go together on anti-constructionkit-therapy with the creation of the album 'Reise Reise'.

Rammstein 2004 MTV masters - part 1 - translation
Don't know if someone already translated this (probably, but can't find it) and because i'm trying to keep my german language skills up (as to not forget them 😊) i did a translation of this part of the interview. There are 10 parts in all, if a translation hasn't turned up by then (and maybe some of you like to read the translation) i might do the others as well 😉 so here goes (in italic i added a few small additions when it was useful to understand the meaning)
youtube
Voiceover (VO): No german name has been as popular in music worldwide through polarization, darkness, bizarre romanticism and the accusation of german chauvinism like...Richard Wagner. But 100 years later there is another name, carried by 6 men: Rammstein. Rammstein are evil personified. From their beginnings in 1994 until today, this band has divided nations into admirers and haters.
Paul (P): ..as well as Till sings, grunts I mean..
VO: No German who doesn't know them. There is hardly a continent in the world that they haven't toured yet. Their path leads through taboo breaks and pyromania, horror poetry and sex spectacle.
P: Some see us as beautiful others as ugly, some see us as funny, others as evil
VO: Stomping rhythms and uncompromising hardness are their trademarks
P: There are people who say why don't you make nicer music, and then I always say we are doing it as nicely as we can
VO: ..everything about their humor, their romance..
Till (T): We couldn't say something about..like..like..love in a positive sense.. (with a slight shrug as if he finds the idea distasteful)
VO: ..their crisis..
Richard (R): That was a situation in a band where you .. where it was really on the brink, you continue or you stop.
VO: ..and their secret passions, the musical changes and about being German, now at MTV Masters - Rammstein. Until now, the rule in the rock business was: men love women and women love rock stars. With regard to gruesome dark rockers, however, the number of groupies seems to be moderate.
P: In the past I said: we make music for women. Whenever we liked one, a woman, in the audience, we thought we'd attract a couple more, but we didn't really succeed. Well I was once at Lenny Kravitz (concert), oh so many women, then I thought what are we doing wrong. The harder the music, the more men there are wearing sneakers
VO: But maybe that is exactly what is needed on what is by far the most competitive music market in the world, the USA; where a winking pop giant like Robbie Williams remains unsuccessful, Rammstein celebrates great success and goes on major tours.
R: Rammstein, for example, are of the opinion that the success in America has contributed significantly to the fact that we have also achieved success in Europe. And in America it probably wouldn't have been possible. America seems very extreme, when we were on the european market and I believe that everyone who makes music, always has the dream to be successful in america as well.
VO: When the band was founded in Berlin in 1994, however, it is pure fun that tempted the 6 Berliners and Schweriner to start a music project
P: We just wanted to make heavy, deep, machine, monotonous, dull music, all of us wanted that, independently of each other, then we found eachother that way.
VO: Today's Rammstein guitarist Richard Kruspe met today's singer and lyricist Till Lindemann, who at the time was a different kind of craftsman.
P: ..he was a basket weaver and always sang when he was weaving baskets. Richard always listened at the door and thought, hm, doesn't sound too bad, I'll try something with him. Then he came up with the glorious idea to use Till as a singer

Rammstein 2004 MTV masters - part 4 - translation
Next part, a lot heavier than the previous ones imo 🖤 again italic parts are my comments when i feel it adds to the translation
previous parts
part 1
part 2 is unfortunately blocked (maybe there's another link?)
part 3
youtube
Voice over (VO): In the past they impress with their monotony and a certain predictability. If you want to do it at home to scare little siblings: watch, this is how it works
Schneider (S): In the past we used a lot of catchwords "Ashes to Ashes" (Asche zu Asche), "Play with me" (Spiel mit mir) well, we don't use those those as often anymore..
Paul (P): It was a very simple form of building the chorus. You just take, ehm, a nice chord, shout a word, and play a funny melody, and the chorus is ready. "Bend over" (Bück dich) da-dam-dam. That was.. well practically our construction kit
VO: What willingly upsets parents and other critics are the imperative commands that Rammstein prefers to use. Each of the catchwords is chosen with love and care.
S: Not all words are as good to sing, not just these brutal words, but there also aren't that many beautiful words ... that you can turn into a chorus.
P: Yes, because the German vocabulary will soon run out, we have skimmed off all the good words that exist, like "Meat" (Fleisch) or "Ashes" (Ashes). Others.. we're slowly running out.
VO: In terms of content, the Rammstein songs move straight through life. It's about love, power, family, loss and death, but also about current events. But it is always the dark aspects that pull lyricist Till pull in their spell.
Till (T): I couldn't say something about..like..like..love in a positive sense (with a slight shrug as if he finds the idea distasteful) just like that, it just has to be shit somehow (Till uses the word 'irgendwie' a lot, this is translated here with somehow). And excruciating, and painful
VO: And as long as there are big and small atrocities in the world, Rammstein never gets tired of recording them for us.
T: Actually we were always accused that it is somehow not that good (to write about misery), but that there are so many positive and beautiful aspects in life that you actually should write about, but there is probably more misery than you want to admit. And therefore.. eh.. we have struck into such a good zone somehow that people really listen to and also, well, mentally take over and identify with.
VO: And if in real life at times it is not that shitty, excruciating and painful, then one or the other Rammsteiner has to help jumpstart his creativity in other ways.
Richard (R): I notice myself that..eh.. in order to be creative, I put myself in situations where I suffer, and sometimes create drama and processes of suffering in order to achieve creative results again.
T: That is also a kind of self-therapy somehow, if you write something, as the saying goes "off the soul" .. and if you.. eh.. grab a certain area of feelings into words then somehow afterwards you feel a bit better.. a little bit.
VO: So let's be happy that one or the other Rammsteiner threatens to break down because of the badness of this world, because without their suffering we wouldn't see successes.
R: If I feel really well, or if I would be feeling really well, I would stop making music because then I don't need it anymore. For me it is a valve, for me it is a.. communication to express myself; my pain or suffering or whatever.
VO: Such a valve found its way into record stores at the end of 2000. It is a record that even Rammstein critics like. But it is also the album that almost breaks up Rammstein because of it's intense creation-process. The production of "Mutter".
R: Extremely intense..

Rammstein 2004 MTV masters - part 3 - translation
Next part (because i love to hear Paul talking 😊) again italic parts are my comments when i feel it adds to the translation
previous parts
part 1
part 2 is unfortunately blocked (maybe there's another link?)
youtube
Paul (P): ..hits Flake Till with a fluorescent lamp over the head, splinters beautifully, everyone is happy, eh, the American's are twice as thick and do not break. Flake really had to knock Till's head, it didn't break. That's really bad. It's like a karate effect, if it doesn't break, it really hurts. It wasn't until the third or fourth blow that it finally broke, flipped over, and then stuck in Schneider's arm, the piece really got stuck. He went on playing like that, it was like some horror movie
Flake (F): With Till subcutaneous fatty tissue came out..
P: ..yes.. (grinning)
F: ..this white stuff came out.. (grinning)
P: Till was bleeding like a stabbed pig, thankfully it was the last song then we could get Schneider to a doctor.
Voice over (VO): After more months and concerts, this time the USA who are desired (term 'Sehnsucht' is used, pun on the R+ song) . Further American tours follow, supported by Skunk Anansi, among others. Shortly after the tragic incident of September 11th, 2001, they played with System of a Down and Slipknot on the Pledge of Allegiance tour in the USA and witnessed blind American vengeance for the first time.
P: From september 11th we had a big tour with Slipknot there.. and before the tour started the national anthem was played, then Slipknot always told one of those affected stories in the middle, yes .. we have to .. and everyone screamed "yeah.." ... wanted all-out war sort of and then it was important that we clarify afterwards that we .. eh.. have a somewhat different point of view than what is now common practice in America
VO: 3 years later Rammstein dedicate the USA "America" a non-love song that shows a certain aversion of the USA. An insensitive action when you consider the successes it owes to them in Europe
Oliver (O): We have never thought about what people might think of us, because then ... well ... we wouldn't be sitting here. The Americans are no exception, well.. in this approach
VO: Premature concern is unjustified anyway, the Rammstein aware US citizen does not seem to notice the slight subliminal criticism of his country anyway
P: Funnily enough, they like the song because the American himself is .. well .. not so receptive to irony, he doesn't understand it that way and he thinks everything is good and everything is beautiful. If they bomb a country, they don't do it out of malice, but they want to help someone there. I don't want to tell the americans how to understand the song, ehm .. but I know, for example, about this "Born in the USA" by Bruse Springsteen, that is also an absolutely anti-American song and in the southern states they sing along to it diligently
Schneider (S): For me the song is not even written for America, it is .. well .. it is the point of view, a European point of view on things, like how american culture .. floods Europe and somehow affects the whole world.
VO: But how do Rammstein influence the world? What has changed in the jagged band-bang music of the first 3 albums? What does it mean to Rammstein to be German? What do our heavy boys find funny and what can't they laugh about? Why are they always so gloomy and how do you make your own little Rammstein song? All this and much more at MTV Masters - Rammstein.
VO: Rammstein, one of the few world-class German bands. 6 Scary boys learn people in, around and far around Berlin what fear is for 10 years (this phrase is a reference to a Brothers Grimm fairytale "The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was") . America loves them. Parents fear them and you will learn to love them. Breaking taboos, pyromania, horror poetry and sex spectacle paved their way
P: It has always been our job to..eh.. illuminate the depth of people
VO: You can find out all this and more here, in MTV Masters - Rammstein

Rammstein 2004 MTV masters - part 9 - translation
Next part, many bits already known from a making of or other vids, but the interaction between Paul and Schneider is one of my favorites of this whole series 💕 again italic parts are my comments when i feel it adds to the translation
previous parts
part 1
part 2 is unfortunately blocked (maybe there's another link?)
part 3
part 4
part 5
part 6
part 7
part 8
youtube
(and again this starts mid sentence..)
Voice over (VO): ..(to get 6 mature men..) to agree on the same thing, at Rammstein the right of the most annoying applies.
Paul (P): who is the most stubborn .. who annoys the most .. then the others say "ah no, then just do it like that ..". This is roughly how we establish our opinion. If there are only 4 there; one is on vacation, the other is in America, then the 4 say "okay, let's just go with that" and then 3 are gone again "what about the sea, are we going to do it?" "No, we do mountains .." "Oh no, mountains is rubbish, let's do that thing with the sea" and then we start again with the sea. So it is back and forth and at some point (chuckles) some cry, some die in the hospital and .. what is at the end is on top, sea or mountains, that is done.
VO: Once the idea has been discussed and fought, our 6 multi-talents devote themselves to their secret passion; the performing game.
Richard (R): First of all, eh .. we love to act so you can always tell on the set that it's always difficult to bring these 6 people down. Everyone fights for their own scene and everyone is happy when they can play a small role.
Schneider (S): One is always happy when one shines a bit (laughs)
P: If you can..eh.. just play around a bit, we're actually looking forward to it. In the dwarfs video when we chopped in the mine, it was fun, wandering around the house with Snow White, that was nice, when my bum was spanked, that wasn't so nice, that made the whole band happy.
VO: And here and there a secret special talent comes to light.
P: With "Ich Will" we were able to really act out a bit, because there are ..(looks at Schneider) .. Schneider is our.. I think Schneider is very good at depicting.. (Schneider sniggers).. he doesn't like to hear it ...(looks at Schneider, reconsidering) .. well talking, with sound, I didn't know know either, but the looking..(mimics exaggarated looking in different directions)..
S: ..to find a certain direction..(also looks in various directions)
P: ..he can do that really well..
S: ..that we can do well..
VO: The legendary Rammstein concerts are worth more than just a few views. The heart of Rammstein's staging impresses with song and light, violence, monumentality, fire and sulfur
Till (T): (bang in background) Those were the colleagues from pyrotechnics. Fantastic!
VO: Theoretically it would work without it, but a show without fuss and bangs is now practically impossible. The name Rammstein is an obligation.
P: We have 13 trucks .. we have tons of stage, we have tons of pyros, we have terrible.
Flake (F): I would have liked to stand up in the soundarea and play, but then you say, fans or those that are there say "but i bought those for the show". (this bit was difficult to understand for me)
P: And then we noticed that we don't even need to defend ourselves or counteract, there is no other way, that what we are so we have to do it.
P: It is probably our fate.. pff.. to always invest our money in rockets.
VO: But the fire devilry is not just a trademark that cannot be ignored, it also saves lives, because other stage designs are sometimes too dangerous.
P: We had the idea to switch from fire to water .. after the first electric shocks we then refrained from it, because water is really not used in rock music. Because rock music is connected to electricity ... and it just doesn't fit.
VO: And Rammstein wouldn't be Rammstein if they didn't skilfully circumnavigate the laws of physics themselves, as diligently as they experiment with taboos, they try to implement visual ideas.
T: Pyrotechnics, sound, light and we as a band.. we are trying to put together a show from the songs we have, from light and pyrotechnics somehow. These 4 things must be brought together and .. yes that is a 24 hour job.
VO: But in addition to trademarks, lifesavers and work, the banging is above all a guarantee for fun and excitement at the show. A feast for the eyes for the spectators, a challenge for the actors.
T: Now let's go down and try to do a few songs and let it bang a little.

Rammstein MTV masters 2004 - part 6 - translation
And we're back with the next part 😊, again in itallic parts are my comments when i feel it adds to the translation (was published in 2012 on youtube, but seems to be from 2004, so have adjusted the title)
previous parts
part 1
part 2 is unfortunately blocked (maybe there's another link?)
part 3
part 4
part 5
youtube
Voice ober (VO): .. in small groups in the experiment room
Paul (P): ..which is very relaxing. Because we have a lot of pigheads in the band, and when a pighead isn't there every now and then, the others are happy, they can take things further in peace and quiet, that would otherwise never have had a chance, like "Amour" for example. .. "Los" ... so songs that, ehm, would otherwise not have made it into the final cut.
Oliver (O): With this record, we didn't try to cut from the start when selecting ideas, but rather, ehm, played around with all the ideas as far as we could take them, until Till came into the mix.
VO: The sophisticated vocal passages are also noticeable in the therapy plate. Who could have guessed at an earlier point in time what a silky voice hid in ex-grunter Till Lindemann.
Till (T): That wasn't really encouraged at the beginning, at the beginning, ehm, when you burst into anger you don't sing like that, now it's comes from the soulful shelf, you just have to sing. Well, I mean, it follows with the song and the text, when you get instruments that somehow scream, and after that the chorus has to be nice and sung, you have to sing on it, somehow, and actually on the albums before that, ehm, there was a small upwards trend, it evolved more and more. In the beginning.. the first record was a pure outburst of anger, that was more talking than singing.
VO: But no fear, Rammstein have by no means lost their darkness and mightiness. They are still the terrible beautiful gloomy rockers. And above all, just like before there is the brazenness with which Rammstein take up topics. Unscrupulous and calculated.
P: We .. think .. mostly not like "is it allowed", "what could he think about it". When we would do it like that.. because you can't think like that, we think "do we like it", "do we have to do it like this now" .. yes.. then we do it
VO: The first single of the new album shocked the nations as usual. Rammstein report back for business.
P: We didn't think that the record company would choose this song. Well we wouldn't have suggested it as a single. Because it's strong meat (Paul uses the phrase "Harter Tobak" (literally "Strong tobacco") which has the english meaning of "Strong meat", the meat in this case is no pun from him to the sung this is about, that is a coincidence from the english phrase).
VO: "Mein Teil" (My part) is trying to document a hitherto unique case in criminal history. A certain Armin M. found a friend over the internet who voluntarily let himself be partly prepared and eaten by him.
P: There once was a man in Germany who ate the other man, Armin M.?..(big grin).. Yes?
Schneider (S): Well the impressive thing about it is that he is not someone who just eats others, but it happened on a voluntary basis. That you can run across someone on the internet, and then the two meet ... and nobody can really do anything against it ... even the judiciary was a little bit puzzled as to how to deal with such a case and then we handled it musically.
VO: Since that delicate topic caused real horror in clean Germany, it's exactly the right thing for Rammstein. The Bild newspaper even named "Mein Teil" as the scandal song of the year. Even the relatively harmless video for the song landed on the index *). A risk that Rammstein is still consciously taking.
S: There's no need to act stupid when you deal with such a provocative topic, a very extreme topic that is offensive somehow and then pretend that it probably interests no one, it is not like that. We know that, eh... it can lead to strong provocation and to divided opinions, but first and foremost it was an interesting topic for us.
(end of part 6)
*) "The Index" is the short name for "Liste der Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien" or in English "List of the federal department for media harmful to young people"

Rammstein 2004 MTV masters - part 8 - translation
Well, now i'm going to finish it, so here is the next part (mainly Paul talking, between the voice overs), again italic parts are my comments when i feel it adds to the translation
previous parts
part 1
part 2 is unfortunately blocked (maybe there's another link?)
part 3
part 4
part 5
part 6
part 7
youtube
(again starting mid sentence from the previous part..on having to explain their motives)
Voice over (VO): ..you are maneuvering on very thin German ice. When they used pictures from Leni Riefenstahl, a director who achieved fame in Nazi Germany, for their video to "Stripped" in 1998, the public was shocked and firmly convinced of the band's alleged right-wing tendencies.
Paul (P): When we noticed what we occasionally evoke for thoughts or suspicions in some people, at first we went on but slowly we thought something was wrong here, either we are stupid, or the people are stupid or what ... where actually is the problem.
VO: The Germans are sensitive. Even a punk band like "Mia" is accused of being lifestyle nationalists because of the song "Es ist was es ist" (It is what it is), although their aim is to develop a feeling for being German without pride or shame. It's not easy to be a German.
P: We Germans have an identification problem due to the crimes committed by the nazis or the whole Hitler shit ... so.. this also means ... there is no normal way of dealing with life before and after.
VO: In fact, one would have to classify the band members politically more as left-wing than right-wing, but where Rammstein often looks for the extreme, they strive for normality here.
P: i just want to handle the country in a normal way.
VO: Gangster-images, pyromania, wild stunts and half-naked men, experiments, horror poetry and touching declarations of love are only seconds away, stay tuned, all this and more at MTV Masters - Rammstein.
VO: They are loved almost everywhere, they are hated almost everywhere, they are disgustingly beautiful. Rammstein is unscrupulous, sinister and romantic. They do educational work. Sometimes they show themselves bare and by now are not just angry all the time.
Till (T): laughing
VO: Rammstein is your friend. Where they have previously wrapped their romantic vein rather rough, the clip for "Ohne Dich" shows what everyone has always suspected. A big heart beats in these men. They love the fresh air, nature and their friends as well.
P: As with every good film you can eh .. summarize the plot of the video in one sentence .. eh .. we are climbing a mountain ..
Schneider (S): To do this, we went to the Austrian mountains ..
P: ..Till falls down..
Richard (R): You mustn't look down ..
P: ....and we drag him up to the top because we know, he is going to die anyway, and that way at least he dies at the top, with a last view.
VO: In the Rammstein house, more and more efforts are made to open up new horizons. Even if they have already overcome some hurdles, there are still things that have long been due.
S: ..and had to look like mountaineers in the 70s or 60s, we don't know exactly. We grew a little bit of a beard and our hair and so on and ... that's where this outfit is from.
P: That we would climb mountains .. deer roars in the background .. that really had to be. I am amazed that we haven't done it before. That we practically go through the fir trees ("durch den Tannen gehen" a line from the song) and point like "we have to go up there" and .. that was about the time .. well .. basically you try to make videos that don't exist, or try to give the video a purposen . Now, just to join the series of bad videos.. that's no reason for us.
VO: In order to distance themselves from everyday video life and to do justice to the total work of art that Rammstein is, the 6 Rammstein minds think up their own video scripts.
R: Basically i'd have to say that the basic idea, the stories always come from the band. We usually sit down and think about which direction we could go.. that is so much fun for us.
VO: But it often ends in a bitter fight when 6 mature men try ..

Rammstein 2004 MTV masters - part 7 - translation
Changed the title of this series because although published in youtube in 2012, it's likely the documentary is shot after the publishing of the "Reise Reise" album, so probably in 2004 (still didn't find a translation elsewhere though), again italic parts are my comments when i feel it adds to the translation
previous parts
part 1
part 2 is unfortunately blocked (maybe there's another link?)
part 3
part 4
part 5
part 6
youtube
(the start of this part is the continuation of interview on the "Mein Teil" video)
Schneider (S): ..and it wasn't just (an interesting theme) for us, but the press was full of it for half a year, and you really couldn't get around it, and so far I think you have the right as an artist or as a band to work with that, and who should do that if not us (laughs)
Voice over (VO): The Rammsteiners act once more in the role of spotters.
Paul (P): It has always been our job to shine around in the, eh.. dephts of people, to illuminate corners that you do not know but that are there, as you can already tell. The reality is sometimes much further than you can imagine in your fantasy. Our strength was always, ehm, to shed light on the perversions of love, which one would not want to admit exist, but which are there, which are actually even more extreme than one can imagine.
P: He starts to pinch his partner's bum during sex and ends up eating, so there's a range there where veryone is in between somehow.
VO: It is not only their music that has freed itself from the tight corset of evil, the Rammsteiners themselves have matured as well. They can even laugh a little bit about themselves by now. Because anyone who previously believed that the men always had winks in their equipment is wrong.
Richard (R): With Rammstein it took us a few years to really start laughing at ourselves consciously. A lot of people always thought "They are very weird and funny" ..
R: ... but actually we weren't. Subconsciously, yes, we did certain things that were funny of course, but we never did that on purpose. Meanwhile we look at ourselves with a sense of humor and that only came with time, simply came with self-confidence.
VO: No wonder, as Rammstein began as evil personified.
Till (T): One, one..tries this..to end this path that we once took somehow, but meanwhile we notice that this tension and this corset that we have put on ourselves, so this evil, gloomy and eh.. in private we are also funny.... it's just that you shouldn't try to pull the label off the bottle; it should always still be Rammstein ..
VO: Nobody will claim it would be easy to switch from bad to good or funny. Especially when everyone knows that the Germans have no sense of humor.
R: Germans always have the problem, people abroad always say "Germans have no sense of humor". You ask, okay who.. what kind of people have a sense of humor? And then you come to a certain point that you notice that people who, eh.. are convinced of themselves, can also handle humor, can also laugh at themselves, and the Germans have a fundamental problem with themselves and their own identity.
VO: Not in the least because all over the world we are considered to be beer-devouring, traditional yodelers with a nazi past; many german artists find it difficult to admit to being german.
P: Rammstein are different maybe from many German bands, a band that ... one of the few bands from Germany that comes across as German, like Kraftwerk ... maybe also like Neubauten (Einstürzende Neubauten)... Rammstein are one of the few that also, eh..are German. Maybe for many people too German.
VO: However, Rammstein are the only band that has to explain over and over again what the motives are behind their image.
P: We wanted to find our roots, no more, no less, we wanted ... to have an identity that everyone in the world is entitled to, and we wanted ... well ... to make music that is typical for our region.
VO: Rammstein maneuvers this plan again and again ..
