Hi

After any event in my home, as my guests are gathering their belongings to leave, I make sure I’m first to the door to open it for them to exit. They unlatch my screen door to push it open to cross my yard to the curb where their presumptive uber driver awaits. It takes most folks a few steps before turning to issue a final farewell or compliment. I smile, now, standing within the door frame and keeping one arm firm against the screen door. And here is where I decide to make a lasting impression. My guests continue to move forward with their exit as I yell from my home ��Great to see you! Make good choices!”

They take pause. Their focus changes from making it down front yard’s stone steps to not wanting to understand why I would request such a thing, but rather if they do in fact make good choices in their life. More often than not I’ll hear a nervous laugh followed by “Oh, of course I will.” If I’m particularly lucky I’ll hear the frail sentence structure built by emotional uncertainty. “Uh...umm...yeah, I will.”

Why do I do this? First, I do not know of any better sentiment to express to friends or family. Why wouldn’t I want my friends to leave my home wanting to take on the world, ready for anything or hoping to change their work or home environments for the better? How else does any change happen in the world? Secondly, I like to screw with their heads. 

Reflective moments revealing self doubt are beneficial to human growth and developing self worth, however, it is hilarious to watch good friends of mine stop and become upset from taking on such an emotional and intellectual question in such a casual moment. 

And this is how I will sum up this blog. Whisky in the Afternoon is my attempt of engaging the world after making the request to make good choices; dare I say to even make better choices. Will this blog provide a solution as to how, no. Definitely not. Blogs can’t make your life choices better. This is lesson number one. However, what this blog can provide for you, the reader, is to regroup within your own psyche to ask if you are capable of making better choices. Maybe you are or maybe you’re not. I think it is worthy to note, you are taking the time to read a blog in age of picture postcard social media. So, that’s something, right?
