“Yeah.” Henry keeps his voice so low he isn’t even sure Alex can hear him. He doesn’t seem to mind, eyes taking in the picture in front of him with parted lips, the edge of his finger covering the camera when he undoubtedly reaches to caress his daughter’s head.

Henry's lower lip wobbles, and a fresh tear rolls down his cheek. Alex watches it track down to his chin, and wonders if Henry would mind him wiping it away. “I really was looking forward to seeing them.”

Another tear escapes, and this time Alex can't help but lean forward and brush it away with his thumb. Henry's breath catches, and he looks at Alex, wearing an expression he can't quite parse. “Come home with me,” Alex blurts out.

Henry's plans for Christmas fall through, so Alex invites him home for the holidays. They're best friends, strictly platonic roommates, so why does everyone think they're dating?

I love that when DJenks made his announcement this month, I went into the tags all morose and accepting defeat, and I saw you there still ready to fight, not giving up, ready for a marathon. Truly, that means SO much to me. A little bit of hope is a powerful thing to have, and we need people who are determined to keep that flame burning bright. So happy to have you in this fandom. You really do make a difference. 💕

Aw, thank you! I really appreciate it. And yeah, I'd almost forgotten about my blog title, which I've had for over a decade, and how hope really does embody me and everything I do.

The streaming landscape is in upheaval, things are changing by the week - even since our turbo-cancellation was announced, two other shows (cancelled for much longer) were saved. Like others have been saying, we were all mentally prepared for a marathon and realistically I don't think anyone can just call everything off after just two months when so many shows have to fight for years before getting a movie deal. I respect David - he told us that news so that we'd know that there's nothing more we can accomplish right now by shouting at streamers, and that we did make a difference. There WERE interested parties, we proved we were lucrative. But that does not mean the fight is over, it just means we need to change tactics and pivot to keeping the fandom active and vocal in the long-term, and bide our time until shifts in the industry open new doors for revisiting OFMD (like David Zaslav leaving, or Max going under, or another merger). That might be six months, or it might be six years. What I am certain of is that there's so much love and passion for this show from the cast and crew that everyone would be down to get the gang back together for a season 3 years down the road.

Basically, I have no doubts the fandom will persist - this fandom is composed of very enthusiastic and artistically talented people who have an unending well of inspiration to draw from. What I do think needs to be done though, that I'm seeing wane a bit on Twitter, is to ensure we direct that noise; most people have stopped using OFMD hashtags, which means our posts won't get noticed. Something that has been great is just how vehemently the fandom has gone after Max on pretty much every single promotional post they've made in the past few weeks - check any of them out, and you'll see 95-100% of the comments are OFMD fans using #DontStreamonMax and #FireDavidZaslav , plus the great new tagline 'Sell The Show, Let Us Go'. That is something that I feel is critical we keep up, as I think one of the most powerful means of influence we have right now is to hold this industry responsible for the cancellation of queer content and just quality content overall. That's one direction we can really put our might towards - toppling the WBD empire faster. Other things we can shout for are a physical release, 'The Jenkins Cut' of s2ep8, deleted scenes/bloopers, merchandise, etc. Max is being absolutely idiotic right now in a way that shoots themselves in the foot, because they're holding onto this IP that could have been their lifeline for keeping subscribers and stock prices up, and not only did they cancel it but they're not even maximizing on the rights they refuse to sell by promoting it or making merch of it, anything that could continue to bring in revenue for what they KNOW without a doubt is one of the best performing shows they've ever had on their platform. Them trying to forget OFMD exists is the nail in their own coffin, because it's the only reason a whole lot of people ever did business with Max in the first place.

So, the long and short of it is, I'll never stop having hope for the return of our show! David said we got the attention of this industry, and we've proven our worth. It's just a really unstable landscape right now, so we need to be patient. It's annoying to see these streamers invest in less successful and more expensive shows, but I think they're all panicking to stay afloat even though they're not making decisions that could help them there. The dust needs to settle. If we can show that there's still a loud and passionate fanbase in a year, in three years, then they will revisit us. We need to keep calling out WBD and Max, we need to keep using hashtags to be heard, and just try to settle into a rhythm that we can maintain long-term. We still have a bunch of BTS to see from Samba, and we will have WJW with David at some point. I think it's important that we DON'T request any season 3 info from him, because that's what jeopardizes the possibility of that storyline then ever getting made. I'm seeing some people on Twitter start to burn out or fall into a state of sad acceptance and if you need to do that for your health, that's fine. But I don't want that mindset to spread throughout the fandom. Our outlook, our words, do have the power to become reality - if we sit back and wave the white flag, then that seriously hurts our chances of ever getting the show back. But if we can carry on like it's just a season hiatus, continuing to demand the question 'ok so WHEN *taps watch*' then our insistence can help make season 3 a reality.

Bria was sleeping, and Janis was curled up next to her. She had a great time with Anthony that day. It was about six in the morning when he picked her up. She emerged with a bagel between her teeth and her zip-up hoodie on. She did not want to leave her bed because it was so warm and cozy. She could not find an outfit she liked, so she had to hurry to get ready. When she brushed her hair and teeth, it was five fifty. She was just dropping off food for Janis when he pulled up.

On her way out, she picked up a bagel from her kitchen. He did not want to wait for her, so he was glad to see that she was prepared.

"Were you in a hurry?" he asked.

She was, indeed. She was not accustomed to rising early. On the way to the Warner Brothers studio, she consumed the bagel. Sarah planned to drop by after work and stay with Janis until she arrived home. Janis was playing in the cat room alone. Ascending the cat tree, she peered down. Compared to where she was, it appeared different.

She cleaned her face with her paw and then stretched. Her little belly was full, and she had enough energy to last for a long time. She enjoyed being a kitten because it allowed her to play and explore her environment. She was able to recharge her energy by taking naps as well. She would grow up to be a large, powerful cat, similar to a lion. Roar! She would hunt her prey as if she were in the African grasslands. She would crouch low, then leap up and strike!

She would kill it while it was trying to escape. She would bring it home for her cubs after that. She was a little kitten for now. She still enjoyed playing with her toys and acting like a lion. Even so, her roars sounded like tiny meows.

Anthony asked, "Bria, what is an amniocentesis?"

"It is related to babies, right?"

They chuckled. Even though her mother was an anaesthesiologist, she knew very little about the medical field. Once he had put on his costume and done his hair and makeup, they were hanging out on the set with his fellow actors. He identified her as the daughter of Sarah, his girlfriend. The fact that they had finally met her made them all very happy. According to him, it was a test that looked for genetic disorders like Down syndrome by taking a sample from the amniotic sac during pregnancy.

She joked that she did not know what the hell he was talking about, so she was glad he was the doctor. Sometimes they did not either. All they needed to do was learn their lines. Is a career in medicine something she would ever want? No, math and science were completely beyond her comprehension. They reasoned that it was a good reason.

"I would also get fired for asking patients if they were a fucking idiot.”

They laughed. It was a very valid excuse. She had recently graduated from high school and was unsure of her career goals. What was her age? She was eighteen. If she had to pick a career, she would want to work with animals. She had always loved animals. Because they did not want to care for it full-time, her parents never permitted her to get a pet.

She adopted a kitten named Janis Joplin the day before. Where was her kitten? She was at home. When she finished work, her mother would come over and spend time with her. The more they conversed with her, the more they liked her. She was just a normal adolescent trying to figure out her identity and goals in life. The possibilities were endless for an eighteen-year-old. She was capable of anything she set her mind to. With a fatherly sense of pride, Anthony observed her.

She found a spot to observe him without getting in the way when it was time to get to work. The actors performed their parts, sometimes making mistakes and having to start over. They laughed, and so did the crew. They occasionally had to stop laughing. They eventually got the shots they needed. The audience was not able to witness the bloopers.

All they saw was the finished product. They had to make it entertaining because the actors put in a lot of work. They asked her to have lunch with them. She and Anthony found a table to sit at after grabbing some food. They were joined by Julianna Margulies, George Clooney, and Noah Wyle. For caffeine, she drank a can of Diet Coke. She picked up a sandwich that looked really good! She had only eaten the bagel for breakfast a few hours prior, so she was extremely hungry.

Sarah was at the house, according to the voicemail she left. Somewhere in the house, Janis was hidden. When she heard her food being poured into her bowl, she emerged. She was lifted by Sarah and placed in front of her bowl. Before eating, she took a whiff. Yum! It had a fish flavour. Her lips were licked. She was smaller than the bowl.

When she was done eating, Sarah would wipe off the food that had gotten on her coat. Pets were too much work, so Sarah never wanted any. She did not believe she would have the time to look after them and provide them with the care they required. When she was younger, Bria pleaded for a dog or a cat. They offered her the opportunity to adopt them after she moved out. The fact that she adopted Janis did not surprise her. She had a deep affection for animals.

She always felt calmer after they were around. Every animal in need of a home would be adopted by her if she could. Whatever kind of animal it was, it would make no difference. She would devote her days to caring for them and showing them affection. Sarah wrapped a hand towel around her to clean her off when she was done eating.

She attempted to escape like a baby. After cleaning her, she returned to the floor and then picked up her food bowl. Before placing it in the dish rack to dry, she gave it a quick rinse with water. After lunch, Anthony discussed with Bria what would happen. He was supposed to stay until five o'clock. That did not bother her at all. He offered to let her sleep in his trailer. When her stomach calmed, she would do that. They cleaned up their mess and returned to everyone after their conversation was over.

After an hour, she went to his trailer and found his bed. Since he was usually filming, he hardly ever used it. The bed was furnished with a cozy blanket and a pillow. Before going under the covers, she removed her shoes and hoodie.

“Where’s Bria”, Julianna asked.

"She’s napping," was his response.

She was not used to having a long day like that. When he had his next break, he would see how she was doing. She wanted to know more about her. How long had he been dating her mother? Three years. Bria was bouncing between her parents, so he met her almost immediately.

They needed some time to adjust to one another. According to Julianna, that made sense. He agreed it did. Did they have plans to get married? They were considering becoming engaged. Before they spoke to Bria, Sarah wanted to discuss it with her ex-husband. He would never abandon Bria, even if they ended up breaking up. Given everything she had already experienced in her life, he could not do that to her.

Voices of Azeroth

I’ll be watching this panel on the Blizzcon livestream and blogging as it goes, so check back for updates.  :)

Our host is senior casting and voice director Andrea Toyias.  She says the first voice actor’s panel at Blizzcon was tiny and only had like 150 seats, and now it’s on the biggest stage with a ton of people in the audience.  I also know it wasn’t included on the livestream until just a couple years ago, which was always a bummer because it’s one of my absolute favorites.

Our panel includes:

Cinematic director Mark Messenger, writer Christie Golden, lead narrative designer Steve Danuser, Patty Mattson (Sylvanas), Josh Keaton (Anduin), and Andrew Morgado (Varok Saurfang).

None of whom look anything like their characters, by the way.  LOL)

They start out talking about how the collaborative process behind story development, and how they decide what story beats should be in cinematics vs in the game engine.  They go through and think about how each character would react to the situation and decide which one to focus on.

Christie Golden says sometimes things that work well on paper end up not working at the storyboard stage, and vice versa.  She also mentions Campbell’s Hero Journey, and how elements of that keep popping up.

Mark Messenger says originally the Old Soldier cinematic was going to have Zekhan saying that his father died being the turning point that softened Saurfang, but they decided Saurfang was too “crusty” to be that moved by it, so they extended the scene by having Saurfang be like “so what?”

Alas, they didn’t bring footage, but Mark and the other story people will LARP in the parking lot with foam armor and stuff to help block out the cinematics.  I posted some pictures of similar, indoor shenanigans from last year’s Blizzcon, and it’s always fascinating and hilarious.  Mark says he hurts himself fairly often doing that.

Andrew talks about voicing Saurfang, and how he came in toward the end of the character’s journey. “I had no idea what I was getting into.  I thought I’d show up, make some noises with my face, and go home.”  They did hours of improv and discussion, delving into their characters’ motivations.  He and Zekhan did a scene where Andrew was on a bridge, ready to jump, and Valance (sp? Zekhan’s actor, who couldn’t be at the panel) was a jogger who came by and tried to talk him down.  They ended up in tears.

The cinematic with Anduin and Saurfang in the Stockades was a low point for Anduin, who was desperate for something to help his people, and freeing Saurfang was a last resort gamble.  

Josh has played WoW since vanilla and sometimes he logs in and wanders around Stormwind and goes “This is all mine!  That’s my auction house!”  LOL

He had his arm in a brace from surgery when he recorded the Stockades scene, which added another layer of vulnerability to his performance.

Metzen is watching the livestream, and Andrea led the audience in a cheer for him.  Aww!  

Andrew says he and Metzen filmed Safe Haven (the Nagrand cinematic) on a gritty foley stage with fake weapons around.  Since this was his first Blizzard job, he wasn’t familiar with Metzen, which actually worked to his advantage because he was able to connect on a personal level without being starstruck.

We get to see a cool behind-the-scenes video of Andrew and Chris ad-libbing Saurfang and Thrall as practice in the studio, just an hour or so after meeting.  They’re arguing about whether Thrall belongs in Nagrand with his family or with the Horde.  There’s a lot of bleeped out profanity and screaming.  It’s raw and visceral and freaking amazing.  

Saurfang called Zekhan “some f***ing kid” who “took off his own f***ing armor and followed me” onto the battlefield in front of Undercity when he tried to get himself killed. Thrall: “That didn’t happen.” Saurfang: “It did!” Thrall:  “Was he a troll?” Saurfang: “What do you think?”

LMAO!

Moving on, they asked Patty to come down and improv roleplay to see what her insight into the character of Sylvanas brought to the table.  She was pacing around with toy weapons, totally in character. 

Sylvanas whispering to Saurfang “I trusted you” was her idea from that session.  Patty said, “For her that’s a big step.  She didn’t trust anybody other than Nathanos.”

When asked how she goes from a nice human to a raging undead elf, she says that darkness is in everyone and all it takes is the right circumstances for it to come out.  Channeling your own inner trauma can be really draining, and it’s hard to put it away after a recording session.

The panel will close out with a live reenactment of some BFA cinematics.
