Not Had Time To Think Of A Title Blog 10.1

Yes, that’s the worst blog title ever, and there have been some bad ones. It’s not even 4am as I write this, Saturday morning - 70 days until the date on my return flight ticket. Will that flight be taking off?

This week, I learned some common phrases in Russian. One is the equivalent of “long story short”. Russian speakers use “короче говоря” which, I suppose would literally be “shortly to say”. As I was learning that, I thought that it is the opposite of what I do in this blog every week. Way more often that not I am making a short, incident-free ‘story’ long. Now everyday is almost identical to every other and still I am spinning it out to 1500 or so words. See? My anecdote about learning a phrase has been stretched to a full paragraph. To be honest (I learned that one as well), I could have dragged it out even longer (like I just did) (чесно говоря).

On Saturday, free of work commitments, I relaxed at home. I did again take the circular route to the supermarket. It was early (imagine) and the staff were sitting outside the shop, on a bench. Who can blame them? One, a young man, escorted me to the door. He used one of those ‘gun’ thermometers to check my temperature, offered me hand-sanitiser and plastic gloves. We had a bit of a, socially-distant, chat, which was actually quite nice. I didn’t break anything, which was good. I did choose a different version of the Tiger alcohol-free beer. This one was a bit better and vaguely tasted like beer but it was still too sweet. I may give up on this experiment. There is one more variety that they sell, so…..

There were trees and branches down everywhere. I don’t remember being aware of particularly high winds, although I have been known to sleep through all kinds of pestilence and disaster. It could have just been the snow, it was a fair amount of snow that fell last week. Either way, I was stepping over and walking round branches all over. The one behind Муниса is still there.

This was my first proper walk for a week. The bins are less than 100 metres away. I made the most of it in terms of exercise and enjoying the fresh air - fresher than ever without all of the usual city-centre cars. This, by the way, is why I have no news about new number plates, and may never have such news.

A cat tried to visit me. I have one window, out of which I can comfortably look. I think I mentioned that I spend most of the day,, now, sitting by this window. I saw this cat down on the road. I am on what we call the first floor but most of the rest of the world calls the second floor. I have this little, sloping roof under my window. I called to this cat and it looked up at me. It then walked toward my building, looking up towards my window as if it was interested in finding out what I wanted. To my right, there is a tree which grows close to the building. After a few moments, the cat appeared, climbing up the tree. Its back was to the building and it was looking at the roof, clearly trying to work out if it could spring from the tree-trunk on to it. It decided that it could not and shuffled back down out of sight. It is a shame. I think our crazy cat at home could have made that twisting jump.

One day, I sat on the windowsill with my feet outside. There is a metal ‘cage’ around the window but my feet could just fit through. A it gets warmer, I may do this more often but it is not particularly comfortable and there really is to a view worth a stare.

People came to clear up the branches

The ante has been upped on the announcement front. I was talking to Keir and Fred and a patrol car came past followed by a tank. Music was blasting from the speakers and the “Stay At Home’ announcement was being made. It was a mixed message - the music said “this is fun” but the tank said “but we really insist that you stay in”.

Sunday was like most other days - I did my planning, went to the bins, had my Russian lesson, sat in different places in the flat. I have noticed that I am surrounded by very noisy cats. I don’t know if it is ‘that’ time of year but they are suddenly very vocal in their interactions. There’s a mixture of street cats and a few house pets that are allowed out.

On my shopping trip I found this mushroom pate. I seem to be craving more variety in my food, I think many people are finding this - boredom broken for a few moment, I suppose, I think that’s the same with the drinks. However, this mushroom pate was really nice. I may go for more today.

There have been more video calls than usual this week. This is good. I now teach through video conference and have my own lesson online. I spend a lot of time communicating in this way. I also have the radio on in the background much of the time and understand why this has been something older people have done for years - it’s a kind of company. On Sunday I made and ate something not unlike fish and chips with something more like beer. I enjoyed it as part of a family, online, meal.

I learned that the way Freddie says ‘Good Morning’ is the most beautiful sound in the world. There was lots of Rain on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I stayed in.

The cat in the bin story. On Sunday, I think, I took my rubbish down to the bins. As I lowered my bag of rubbish, I looked to see where it was going and there was a cat in there. It was more shocked than I was. I changed the routine for both of us, I think.

In lessons, I think some of the children are signing in, not using their cameras and going off doing other things. At the end of one lesson, I told them that was ‘it’, they could go and get on with the task I had just introduced. I said that if they had questions, they could ‘stay’ but if they were ready, they could leave the meeting and get on. One by one, they said ‘bye’ and left. In moments one boy was left. His camera was off and his mic muted - there was just a rectangle with his name in. Several times I asked if he had a question. I typed this in the chat, too. No response. Either his computer had crashed or he was just logged in to look like he was there but was off doing something else. Other possible suggestions are also available! I ended the meeting.

Here’s another strange thing. My alarm has been waking me up. I know. It’s strange. I should be less tired. I have been trying to stay up a bit later, which may seem strange, why lengthen tedious, never-ending days. I am trying to move my body-clock into a morn ‘normal’ pattern for my (possible) return to permanent UK time. But even so…. This morning (Sat 18th), I was awake before 3! Strange.

However, that is pretty much all I can stretch out of this short-story-long. I do have my new ‘thought of the week’ section coming up. Feel free to skip it.

Things have to change. Do we ‘need’ the 150+ billionaires that we have in the UK? When ‘this’ is done, there will be millions of people in absolutely desperate straights. Their businesses will have died or their jobs will have gone. Things are not going to go back to normal, at least not straight away. Some ‘analysts’ are saying the economy will ‘bounce back’ quickly. For lots of people, that is not true. And, the economy as it was was really not working fo them. The old normal valued just about everything wrongly.

There have been people saying, for a long time, that the vast inequalities in society are wrong and unsustainable. One of the main political parties at the last election was saying just that. At least that was the democratically elected leaders were saying. It seems some were working against that idea! We know now that they were right. The world does not need greed, cannot support greed. I read an estimate that 80% of the ‘emergency’ funding in the USA would go to the top 1% of America’s already super-rich. I think that might be morally wrong!

Let’s go back briefly to those billionaires. Does any one person really need enough wealth for several thousands life-times? Can there be any justification for one person holding that much wealthy and resources? People were angry enough when some people were hoarding more toilet rolls than they really needed! There is that old concern about ‘taking people’s money off them’. The question is, is it really ‘their’ money? How can it be justifiable for a few individuals to have so much? How we fairly re-distribute it is a complex issue but it has to be addressed. We now know who society’s real key/essential workers are. It’s not the super-rich seeking hand-outs despite not properly paying in for years. Yes, I’m looking at you Branson and your kind. (I don’t think any of those people read this blog).
