That’s a wrap on autumn at 1750 House. Weekend winds blew almost all the leaves off the trees but not before we had a chance to gather the color palette of each and every tree (see next photo). By this time next year, lovely old house we promise there will be no construction debris bag out front and there will be a fully functional kitchen in back:) Cheers to 272 years of fall. 🍁 . . . . . #autumn #leaves🍁 #oldhouselove #colonialarchitecture #18thcentury #redhouses #autumninnewengland https://www.instagram.com/p/CkowCK7uwTg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sweden - The Red Houses Of Eksjö
Just another brief visit of a rather touristic but very pretty town in Sweden: Eksjö. It’s famous for the typically red houses and the flair of the old days. But see for yourself…

Namibia building homes from mushroom waste and weeds
Tumblr media
“We wanted a new, better way to curtail the housing crisis and a sustainable way to curb the negative effects of the encroacher bush on our environment,” said Magreth Mengo, the head of brand and marketing at Namibia’s Standard Bank. The bank worked with MycoHab – when it was affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the architecture firm Redhouse Studio and the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN) – to find a sustainable way to deal with several issues. “This project is a first of its kind and is still very much in the experimental phase but shows a lot of promise,” said Mengo.
Tumblr media
“People think the house would smell because the blocks are made of all-natural products, but it doesn’t smell,” says Kristine Haukongo. “Sometimes, there is a small touch of wood, but otherwise it’s completely odourless.” Haukongo is the senior cultivator at the research group MycoHab and her job is pretty unusual. She grows oyster mushrooms on chopped-down invasive weeds before the waste is turned into large, solid brown slabs – mycoblocks – that will be used, it’s hoped, to build Namibian homes.
MycoHab grinds them up and uses them as a substrate on which to grow gourmet oyster mushrooms. When fully grown, the mushrooms are sold to local retailers and the leftover waste is compressed and baked into building materials called mycoblocks, with each slab being made from about 10kg of bush.
“If this technology becomes widespread, we could mitigate much of the more than 300m tonnes of bush the government of Namibia wants to thin,” said Haukongo. “In a normal mushroom farm, the substrate is thrown out or used as compost, but here we turn them into mycoblocks.”

Among the numerous issues that arise, one essential question involves waste. What do you do with the waste material from so many teardown structures, when so much of it is toxic?
"All of the material from demolition – the studs, the floors, cellulosic mass [the primary structural component of plants], and even things like ceiling tiles and asphalt material like roof shingles, can be mixed into substrate that then becomes good for growing fungus," says Chris Maurer, founder of Cleveland-based architect firm Redhouse Studio. Through his firm, Maurer has been advocating for the use of substrate to address Cleveland's housing crisis, which is also a health crisis for the city's inhabitants.
The mycelial matter and remaining substrate can then be compacted into “mycobricks” which have a similar density to hardwood, for use in new construction:

An announcement is hereby made to inform everyone that the fingerplants have yielded an abundant harvest this year! The fingerplant fruit, often likened to eggs rather than traditional fruit, possesses a delicate blue skin that conceals the delicious, velvety gel-like flesh. These fingerplant fruits are highly favoured by the geteza community, yet they possess significant toxicity to humans. In light of this, it is important to note that sales of fingerplant fruits to individuals below the legal age, irrespective of their species, is strictly prohibited.
Here's my contribution to the @windowtoworlds 2023 Zine!
You can access the Zine on the Carrd and itch.io in both web and print format!! Please check it out! All the art looks absolutely wonderful!!
The geteza homeworld was a hot and humid planet and, as such, most perennial zoophytes do not grow in cold and dry environments.
In the dry northern hemisphere and in hot, arid climates, large greenhouses (or rather, redhouses) are used to maintain the required conditions for the 'plants'.
Zoophyte 'fruits' are highly toxic to humans and most nations prohibit the sale of these foods to minors. This is also the case for many true vegetables and fruits such as avocado, custard apple and cocoa products.
While there are massive education programs to educate human and geteza youth about the potentially deadly consequences of sharing food, accidents do still happen.

18th of December 1745 saw the Skirmish at Clifton Moor.
With the commander of British forces, Cumberland aware of the Jacobite presence in Derby and reports of there being three armies massing to attack. Prince Charles Edward Stuart was persuaded to retreat north back towards Scotland.
Clifton was a good defensible place to stop, Lord George Murray intended to remain there to wait for the government attack therefore he sent Colonel Roy Stuart with the two prisoners to Penrith, to inform Prince Charles of the duke´s approach, and that he would remain at Clifton until further orders. In the event of the prince approving of his intention of making a stand at Preston, Lord Murray requested that 1,000 men might be sent him from Penrith
Perhaps if Murray had his way Clifton Moor could have been the Jacobite's last stand rather than Culloden? As opposed to previous decisions the Prince went against his generals advice on this occasion
Within the enclosures beside the road Murray posted the Glengarry men, and within those to their left he placed the Stewarts of Appin and the Macphersons. On the side of the road, and close to the village of Clifton, he placed Colonel Roy Stuart´s regiment. As some ditches at the foot stretched further towards the moor on the right than on the left, and as that part was also covered by Lord Lonsdale´s other enclosures, the men on the right could not be attacked easily. This advantage meant that they could flank the enemy when they attacked the left.
Lord George had about 1000 men, Cumberland initially put 250 men into a dismounted assault and at 5pm Lord George ordered the Appin regiment and the Macphersons to adjust their position which then brought them into direct contact with their enemy. The dismounted men as the Appins advanced began to run away. The Jacobites and the government troops engaged in the dark in the village but after about 30 minutes of fighting Lord George directed his troops along the road to Penrith to rejoin the rest of the army.
Cumberland occupied Clifton at about 6pm and launched one last attack on the Jacobites, who had for the most part withdrawn by that time. Casualties on both sides were light. Ten dragoons are listed in the parish register as having been killed, numbers do vary, between 10-40 government fatalities. Of the Jacobites 10 killed, 5 or more wounded, what is most notable is while Bonnie Prince Charles showed compassion and sent his prisoners back unharmed, two Jacobite soldiers were taken - Thomas Ogden of the Manchester is thought to have been transported to the colonies the other, George Hamilton of Redhouse was executed on 1st October 1746.The battle is alluded to in Sir Walter Scott's novel 'Waverley'.
