Common names: #Torchcoral, #trumpetcoral, pom-pom coral Difficulty Level: Torch #coral is generally tolerant, but must have stable alkalinity to survive. Feeding: Poor feeding response, so must usually be fed with pumps off. Most common foods are small suspension matter including phyto and roti. Lighting (Level 5 to 7): Most prefer moderate lighting, but will adapt to varying conditions. Water flow: Medium to low flow is a must in preventing damage to fleshy tentacles against rock or skeleton. Placement: Torch coral can be very aggressive, so be sure to leave space for it to fully extend its tentacles without touching other corals including other species of euphyllia. General: Many times clownfish will host in torch coral like an anemone. Be cautious as not every torch will continue to open fully is harassed by clownfish https://captivecoral.net/portfolio/torch-coral/ #LPScoral #reeftanks #reefmacro #underwaterphotography #macronature #coralreefs #elitereef #coralphotography #macrophotography #photography (at Elite Reef) https://www.instagram.com/p/BshQTgXh_n8/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1a7jqe6hfmhrd

#PavonaMaldives Difficulty Level: #Pavona is one of the most forgiving #SPScorals. Feeding: Pavona has extremely small polyps and only the ability to capture the smallest items. Feeding is not usually needed in a well lit #reef. Lighting (Level 6 to 10): These #corals easily adapt to all medium to high light conditions, and they do it relatively easily. Less acclimation is needed, but care should still be taken. Water flow: Moderate to strong flow is needed to keep these corals clear of debris. Growth patterns will range from tightly forming vertical chips to mainly encrusting depending on flow patterns with tighter forms thriving in higher flow conditions. Placement: Pavona is a very #peacefulcoral and should be placed away from others with more aggressive tendencies. Keep in mind their unique growth forms when placing them. General: These are slow growing but very #uniquecorals. They are easily cut in to fragments, and their resistance to disease makes them a good choice for the first time SPS propagator https://captivecoral.net/portfolio/pavona/ #elitereef #coralfrags #frags #reefaquarium #coralreef #oceanlife #reeftank #reefmacro #underwaterphotography #macronature (at Elite Reef) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsbR5kuhAot/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=67he3yiu3ro1

Common names: #pagodacupcoral, turban coral, vase coral Difficulty Level: #Turbinaria are generally very tolerant to most conditions. Feeding: These #corals have very good prey capture ability with their medium sized, quick moving polyps. Meaty foods of most sizes are acceptable food for them. Lighting (Level 4 to 8): Turbinaria will thrive in a wide range of lighting. As with most #hardcorals, bleaching is a concern, so always acclimate by starting them lower in the tank and slowly move them up to your desired location. Water flow: Higher flow should be provided to keep the horizontal flat surfaces of these corals clean. Placement: Turbinaria are not overly aggressive corals. They may be placed on their side in some cases to keep debris from being caught in the cup. Lower light will yield a flatter cup; higher light will yield a more closed cup https://captivecoral.net/portfolio/turbinaria/ #LPScoral #reeftanks #reefmacro #underwaterphotography #macronature #coralreefs #reefscape #nanoaquarium https://www.instagram.com/p/BsRwz6dBJRg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1qoqxqhy39zm

Common names: #Hammercoral, #anchorcoral Difficulty Level: #Euphyllia is generally tolerant, but must have stable alkalinity to survive. Feeding: Poor feeding response, so must usually be fed with pumps off. Most common foods are small suspension matter including phyto and roti. Lighting (Level 5 to 7): Most prefer moderate lighting, but will adapt to varying conditions. Water flow: Hammer requires medium to lower flow to insure fleshy polyps are not damaged on rocks or skeleton. Placement: All of the corals in the euphyllia group can be quite aggressive. Torch is the most aggressive and should not be placed near other members of the family. Hammer and frogspawn will tolerate each other in close proximity. General: These corals all come in either a wall form or branching form. The branching types may be easily fragged by breaking heads off at the base of the branch https://captivecoral.net/portfolio/hammer-coral/ #LPScoral #reeftanks #reefmacro #underwaterphotography #macronature #coralreefs #reefgeek #coralreeftank #reefporn #allmymoneygoestocoral #coralfrags #crazycorals #elitereef #reeftanklife https://www.instagram.com/p/BrqO67pB2po/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=97mrxg518o8d

Common Names: #chalicecoral Difficulty Level: Chalice #corals range from beginner species of oxypora, such as “Firefly” chalice, up to expert species of #echinophyllia in needs such as light and chemistry. Feeding: Most chalice corals feed at night with small feeder tentacles though some may have long sweepers. They may also take larger meet based foods placed directly on their flesh if given enough time. Pellets are a favorite of mine. Lighting (Level 2 to 6): These are very adaptable to different lighting conditions though some of the best colors may be seen at lower levels. Take extreme care when acclimating them to higher lighting. Chalice corals also have vastly different needs depending on species with some oxypora enjoying much higher light than other chalice species. Water flow: Chalice are not picky when it comes to flow, however, they do require adequate water movement to keep their fleshy surfaces clear of detritus and other debris. Placement: Some chalice corals can be extremely aggressive so plenty of space is needed. General: Members of this family have the ability to produce large amounts of mucus. Be sure you have adequate filtration and plenty of carbon in the system to cope with it https://captivecoral.net/portfolio/chalice/ #LPScoral #reeftanks #reefmacro #underwaterphotography #macronature #coralreefs #elitereef #coralphotography #macrophotography #photography https://www.instagram.com/p/BrncTyWB3kh/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=12ok415c0x0cw

#lobophyllia Common names: open #braincoral, lobed brain coral Difficulty Level: Most species are very tolerant of most conditions though stable alkalinity is a must with all. Feeding: Lobophyllia are extremely aggressive eaters with very capable tentacles. They will easily catch and consume most food types including frozen, liquid and even pellets. Take care as their feeding aggression can sometimes be taken out on neighboring #corals. Lighting (Level 5 to 8): These corals can adapt to a wide range of lighting, but prefer stronger. As with most #LPS take great care when acclimating them to higher lighting to prevent bleaching. Water flow: Moderate. Placement: Brain corals all have some aggressive abilities, but lobophyllia in particular is one of the most #aggressivecorals. Be sure to give it space and attach it well to the rock to prevent it from falling on other corals. General: Feeding tentacles usually only come out at night, so it is best to feed with the lights out https://captivecoral.net/portfolio/lobophyllia/ #LPScoral #reeftanks #reefmacro #underwaterphotography #macronature #coralreefs #elitereef #LPSreef #coralreefs #reefgeek #coralreeftank #reefporn #allmymoneygoestocoral https://www.instagram.com/p/BrT_3S8nfle/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=19sqi22y828ul

#goniopora Common names: #flowerpotcoral, #daisycoral, #ballcoral Difficulty Level: Most species of goniopora are nearly impossible to care for in captivity over a long period. Recently very specific species were identified which are slightly easier. Red gonioporas are generally the best specimens to try. All species require very good water conditions and regular feeding. It’s also believed that due to their natural habitat, some metal content in the water may be beneficial. Feeding: Regular feeding is key to keeping these #sensitivecorals. Baby brine, rotifers, oyster eggs and other small meaty suspension foods work best. Spot feeding is the best way to feed goniopora, and even placing a container over them while they eat may be required for them to thrive. Lighting (Level 3 to 6): Most species require medium to relatively high light. Light acclimation is very important for these sensitive #corals. Water flow: Moderate alternating flow is best. Placement: Goniopora should be given plenty of space to insure that its long flowing tentacles are not damaged on rocks or other corals. General: These corals are not for the beginning hobbyist, and even the experienced should carefully consider it before committing to such a demanding species. Goniopora and alveopora are easily recognized by the number of small tentacles at the end of each arm. Goni typically has 24 while alveopora only has 12 https://captivecoral.net/portfolio/goniopora/ #LPScoral #reeftanks #reefmacro #underwaterphotography #macronature #coralreefs #elitereef #LPSreef https://www.instagram.com/p/BrJ6JpuHkB4/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=rg9z77b6ctvs

#cynarina Common names: #Buttoncoral, Cat’s eye Difficulty level: Cynarina is one of the more sensitive of the sand dwelling #LPScorals. Extra care must be take to stabilize alkalinity and calcium. Feeding: Cynarina is an aggressive eater which will consumer nearly any sized meat based foods able to fit on its oral disc. Lighting: Lower lighting levels are acceptable for this sand dwelling species. Waterflow: They may be housed in most flow conditions though time should be given when moving them into higher flow to allow the flesh to acclimate and fill properly. Placement: Cynarina must be placed on a soft sand bed with enough room around it to open without being damaged on nearby rocks. General: These are probably the best shape-shifter of all #corals with the ability to make vast changes in their size and shape to fit conditions https://captivecoral.net/portfolio/cynarina/ #LPScoral #reeftanks #reefmacro #underwaterphotography #macronature #coralreefs #reefgeek #coralreeftank #elitereef https://www.instagram.com/p/BrBrYcIH-n-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5busg7lyu0xh

#favia Common names: #braincoral Difficulty Level:Sensitivity depends a bit on the species, but most are quite tolerant, forgiving and easy to care for. Feeding: Most species have fairly good prey capture abilities, and will even accept pellets placed directly on their mouths. Growth may accelerate if fed regularly. Lighting (Level 4 to 7): Favias will thrive in a wide range of lighting. As with most #hardcorals, bleaching is a concern, so always acclimate by starting them lower in the tank and slowly move them up to your desired location. Water flow: Moderate to strong flow. Placement: Favias will encrust over rocks, so it is usually best to place them on a hard surface. Some species have long sweeper tentacles, so leave space between them and other corals to prevent fighting. General: This is a huge group of #corals with a lot of different care requirements, so be sure to research further on your specific specimen https://captivecoral.net/portfolio/favia/ #LPScoral #reeftanks #reefmacro #underwaterphotography #macronature #coralreefs #reefgeek #coralreeftank #elitereef https://www.instagram.com/p/Bq8h_l4HfWU/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=g1kmmbxa13og
