I didn't know MicroPCs were a thing until I read your post and now I'm super interested! I didn't think getting a "desktop" was possible for me since I don't have the space/money for a big tower, but this might be a game changer. However, I don't know which ones are good? All the ones I'm finding on Amazon are brands I've never heard of with few reviews.

Okay so you're looking for the micro form factor, not necessarily a micropc (which sometimes means a self-contained pc in a sealed case for bargain basement prices that, generally speaking, I would want to do a lot of testing on before I'd trust one.)

Sticking with the big 3 brands again you'd be looking for the Lenovo Tiny line, the Dell Micro Form Factor, and the HP Mini desktop.

These are, generally speaking, business machines and have a higher entry price than your average desktop. However, they are also easier to upgrade than a laptop so as long as you start with a decent processor you can get lower specs on the RAM and the SSD and upgrade them at a later date.

You can also look for open box and manufacturer refurbs if you want to save some money. Desktops are a better option for refurbished computers than laptops, and business desktops are generally pulled from environments where they saw light duty. If you - or anyone - is going to look at refurbished computers I think you should still look for the specs described in the inital post but it is even more important than with a new computer purchase to pay attention to the generation of the processor; you absolutely don't want anything more than a few years old - as of now, August 2023, I wouldn't buy anything older than a 10th-generation i5/i7 processor in a refurbished device, and if it was a 10th gen I'd have a heavy preference for the i7 over the i5.

But you may be able to get some savings simply by looking for older gen processors on new devices - here's a very reasonably priced dell with great specs and a 10th-gen processor that is new in box. ($670 for an i5-10th gen, 32GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a Pro OS).

And if you have a VESA mount monitor, there are all kinds of brackets that are available online and compatible with pretty much all extra small form factor PCs for about $15-$40.

Good News! Sims 2 runs better on my old Laptop!!!

I haven't been simming for the longest time due to the sims 2 just running super poorly on my desktop PC. It was running poorly, but after I upgraded a few things - mainly added ram and a new graphics card, the experience legit got worse. It would run "ok", but after like 20 minutes I'd run into several issues. While all issues were *technically* playable, it made me super disheartened and annoyed with the whole thing. For Christmas I ended up getting a refurbished laptop (4-5 years old). I installed the sims 2 on it and............it runs really well! Arguably much better than my PC (I suppose it just runs better on older/less powerful pcs??? idk). Haven't overly tested it, but it can run everything on High, so far no pink soup, lags, glitches or slowdowns after an hour in game and can handle all of my CC. I will be playing once I get it setup and so excited to be able to play again without ripping out my hair :)

dunno how much you make but sometimes I like to look around at custom build PC sites like I buy power, they sell some refurbished PCs the lowest price I've seen so far is about $650 before tax on PC towers but the lowest for refurbished laptops I've seen there is $1300 before tax.

Lenovo is another site I like to check out, my current PC is a Lenovo and it runs pretty well, the lowest I've seen for their custom build laptop is around $570 before tax while on sale, the lowest I've seen for their 1tb desktop towers while not on sale is $580 before

The both have possible payment plans, iBuyPower using something called affirm and Lenovo with something called Lenovo financing. Dunno what that entails except that they're payment plans.

Didn't buy my PC from either of those sites however. I bought it on Newegg. An online tech shop that sells computer, gaming related devices and some other tech, their refurbished towers run as low as 117 before tax and their for their refurbished laptops I've seen as low as 186 before tax. I got my Lenovo Legion gaming desktop from them during college as I need a computer that could handle 3d modeling software while in college like 3-5 years ago and I got it for about $700-$800 or so after tax, Legion is still working almost as well as the first day I set it up.

Figured I'd throw the knowledge out there for when old faithful gives out on you so you won't have to go through too much trouble finding something to replace your laptop. It took me about four days of looking to find a good computer within my college budget till my dad introduced me to Newegg so it's good info to have and share, I hope it's helpful knowledge to you or anyone else who may need it at the very least.

I found out that some stupid Windows update was the reason my computer kept tanking these past few nights, to the point where it kept making Firefox and other programs freeze. Last night I just let the update run by itself, while closing everything else and keeping an eye on its progress. It managed to finish and everything's back to normal.

... that being said, this really feels like a sign I should finally get a new computer. My desktop is 9 years old, it's probably a little overdue. e_e;

I don't want to just upgrade the parts and risk breaking something, but I don't want to buy completely brand new either. Both to avoid Windows 11 and because most brand new PCs right now tend to be overpriced like hell!!

There's a really nice refurbished mini PC I found that more than fits my needs (plus it has Windows 10 instead of 11 thank god). But it's still like $500. And I want to get a new monitor with it, that bumps it up to a little over $600 for a good monitor plus adapter cable.

The monitor I'm using right now is actually "work equipment" from my company's office, but I've been using it for both my work laptop and personal desktop. Sure, no one will probably care, but it would probably be good to have a separate personal monitor in case something happens to the work monitor, y'know? :u

I think I should be fine to buy it maybe by the end of this month or next month. Then again, I'm also considering opening some quick commissions (like, very simple doodles and maybe chibi drawings) via Ko-fi to help with this too. Even if I don't get enough to cover the full amount, it'd still be helpful!
