Darkness Youkai.
Quick sketch of the Osana-Reimu version of Rumia. I haven't watched it in ages, but I was thinking about it again.

Something something Reimu Hakurei.
Okay but like. I don't know if it's that people just don't get it or don't really explore it often or what the deal is but Reimu is a complex character and I feel like I don't see that depicted often enough. Last time I can remember seeing a fanwork that really portrayed it was a little bit in Reireimu. Reimu does not love violence. Her job is supposed to BE violence, killing youkai and all. But she specifically designed a new set of rules that would prevent death from being necessary to resolve conflicts and incidents. Don't get me wrong, she isn't scared to pick a fight, but Reimu canonically wants youkai and humans to be able to coexist and live in peace, but her role as the Hakurei Maiden is, at its most simple level, to prevent that. Reimu does not like thinking about this. She does not like thinking about how this contradiction complicates her life.
Now there's a lot of places you could take this in a fanwork, as with most pieces of touhou lore, but I have a soft spot for how this can play into her relationships, platonic or romantic
Marisa: Reimu and Marisa, practically joined at the hip. Marisa does not have the same issues as Reimu in this regard, she's an outcast, she ran off from her family to live in the forest and do magic, she not about to let some stupid idea humans have get in the way of her being pals with youkai, see Alice and Nitori. Marisa would want to help Reimu get over this, try to get her to be less guilty feeling about being friendly with youkai, because honestly, Marisa isn't friends with the Hakurei Maiden, she's friends with Reimu, and she wants to see Reimu be herself and not feel bad about it.
Aya: Reimu and Aya both are forced into boxes by their respective roles. It'd be sorta taboo on both sides for them to mingle and be genuinely close, so I think it'd make them both feel better to take that step forward and rebel against the dumb ass rules and just do what they wanna.
Suika: I don't see enough if these two being drinking buddies honestly. I can see Suika drunkenly explaining why she caused the incident in Immaterial and Missing Power, how she just everyone to come together and drink, party, and get along. Reimu drunkenly responds that she wants that too.
Yukari: This one is interesting. The whole thing with Aya and being close with a youkai applies here, but I think it's most interesting for Yukari, letting herself get attached to another human after you KNOW she was distraught after Yuyuko. Reimu reminds Yukari of what it's like to be human. I enjoy that.
Sanae: Sanae comes into Gensokyo, fresh faced, ready to exterminate some youkai! And then she gets attached to some youkai, and sure she's still a shrine maiden and she does fight youkai, but she's less weighed down by befriending them than Reimu because she's not betraying her life's purpose by doing so. Sanae might be an airheaded goober, but like Marisa, I don't think she'd want Reimu to feel so guilty about being herself.
You can find something for most of Reimu's character relationships, and I think it's neat. Let that shrine maiden be silly.

(Going off the safe assumption Rumia wins) Here's the line for the first Gym Leader's Ace!
Tumblr media
Shadling
The Darkness Pokemon
A Dark and Poison Type
Dex Entry: Aside from the strange tail coming out of Shadling's body, Shadling's body consist entirely of a strange dark sludge that's corrosive in nature. It is unknown what's under this sludge, if anything at all. In place of eyes, they have a strange, ribbon like structure that functions somewhat like ears. They are known for bouncing around the woods at night.
Abilities: Gooey/Poison Touch
Hidden Ability: Corrosion
Fun fact: The sludge being corrosive is based on Osana Reimu and ReiReimu =)! Kinda an abstract take on Rumia but still. When I call this thing a little shit, I mean it, it has like a Jigglypuff tier BST. Shit sucks. Dusk stone evo (Don't worry, the evo has a level up move set). I feel like this line is kinda Bendy coded given that they're meant to mostly be blackish and yellow (Body is like a VERY dark red and the tail is Rumia's hair color). Oh yeah, Rumia uses the evolution btw.
Tumblr media
Sludgdow
The Darkness Pokemon
A Dark and Poison Type
Dex Entry: Sludgdow are agressive nocturnal predators found around the forests of Gensokai. Spending the days hiding in trees, they swing and bounce around the forests at night, using their ribbon like hearing organs to detect prey. Once detected, Sludgdow will violently attack their prey item with their sharp claws while slowly digesting the victim with their corrosive sludge. Despite their violent nature, they are often compared to human children in terms of personality.
Abilities: Poison Touch/Gooey
Hidden Ability: Corrosion
"Despite their violent nature, they are often compared to human children in terms of personality," is meant to be a joke. Kids do fucked up shit. Anyways, here's Rumia's partner pokemon! Pronounced (Sludge-doe), Sludgdow is a damn mean ace for the first gym, but Gensokai is a cruel bitch and Rumia is here to teach you this. I realized while writing shadling's dex entry that Sludgdow looks kinda like the Searchers from Bendy. And the mostly Yellow and close to Black color scheme surely doesn't help. Also the "ribbons" of this line are meant to be red if you couldn't guess. The line lacks eyes and are blind as a nod to Rumia's little shadow bubble she flies around in, which is actually what Shadling is modeled after =D!

Is Shin Gensokyo at all inspired by Osana Reimu?
Not really, I get a lot of comments how the current story really sounds like osana reimu but the root really started with this silly sketches
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The story in which the sketches took place in is a much more modern Gensokyo. There’s the scarlet devil mansion being a huge corporate entity, the kappa having a tech company with a monopoly on it and former hell having a nuclear energy that powers the whole of Gensokyo. The Protagonists are these 3 little fellas but eventually I decided to scrap the story all together because I really don’t know where to go with it. However the theme of modern Gensokyo persists throughout the iteration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next iteration is more of a next generation of Gensokyo Incident Solver, kinda like how Boruto is to Naruto (I know, I don’t have any other comparison). This is also where I first came up with ShinGensokyo as a name (Not on my own, my friend gave it as a suggestion and I took it). The story is centered around 3 characters too, which is Reiyu Hakurei the daughter of Reimu, Hatsuma Morichika the daughter of Marisa and Rin Satsuki, a half youkai kirin. The modern setting of Gensokyo was toned down in this iteration, no big bad evil corporation SDM, the kappa tech company is not really a tech company anymore, and the Moriya become the huge factor of technology trickling into Gensokyo.
Tumblr media
The main theme of the story here was about Reiyu looking up to take up the mantle of Hakurei Shrine Maiden like her mother but she is timid about it and Reimu don’t really want to push that responsibility to Reiyu as she doesn’t really know how to teach Reiyu to become a shrine maiden herself. Really had difficulty with this iteration because it changes a lot of the major characters in Touhou and I really have a hard time to do them justices, I’d also have to worry about the theme of modern Gensokyo and how everyone copes with the changes made while at the same time I have to focus on Reiyu’s and the other characters’ arc. Overall it’s a story heavy project for a first timer attempting to make a comic series. But then….
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made these little sketches of “wouldn’t it be funny if Rumia gets adopted by Yukari as a shikigami.” it got some attention and I keep drawing it because I adore drawing a simple character design and also I love Yukari. I tried making it a separate series than ShinGensokyo and titled it Sunshine but my ambitious dumb self thought that I should add some substances other than “haha silly Rumia.” and so I got the idea of combining ShinGensokyo and Sunshine and it’s a formula that I came to accept.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rumia is kind of a blank template for me to start working out her character which is good. Initially, I came up with a gag slice-of-life comic about a modern Gensokyo as seen through the eye of a clueless Rumia but then I decided to add some character development to Rumia too which is now the current state of the comic.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, No, ShinGensokyo is not at all inspired by Osana Reimu. The main theme of ShinGensokyo is about dealing with changes and growing up while Osana Reimu and it's subsequence sequel Reireimu from what I can tell is dealing with tragedy and past traumas (I never really watched it, only heard about it, my apologies if I get the theme wrong). the only similarities I could tell is Rumia's questionable origin both in Osana and Shingensokyo. If you read this far, thank you and sorry for going on about it with a long post when the answer is just simply No. Thank you for asking.

Osana Reimu and Reireimu...
Bro that was amazing, I literally came here with 0 expectations and ended up finding a diamond. I don't know much about touhou lore, I only know about this saga what I saw in memories of phantasm, a metroidvania that I played using Sakuya, the memes and the music that is brutal (I love so much Touhou songs). Speaking of the story of this doujin… I've never wanted so much to see an animation from a manga, this is even on a higher level than many anime I've seen. I didn't cry with the story BUT I felt an emptiness inside with the final chapter. In summary I loved this project, it is too good.
Tumblr media
PS: In my head this story is canon, I find it so good that I find it hard to accept that it was made by a fan.
Tumblr media
EDIT 26/6/2023, 8:06 AM...
Well, thanks to this fan manga I ended up reading everything about the history of Touhou, the lore of all the games, the wikis of the important characters and videos explaining the lore of the manga that it has. It seems a bit sad to me that in the canon Rumia has practically no importance XD, so with more reason in my head Osana Reimu's manga is canon :v

Touhou Fanwork Spotlight #8
Osana Reimu and Reireimu by Joyfull
This is a story of when Hakurei Reimu was still young, and the man-eating youkai was big.
Tumblr media
Title: Osana Reimu (幼霊夢); Reireimu (霊々夢) Author: Joyfull (ジョイフル) Upload date: 2011-05-25 Translation: Mazui (Osana Reimu); jorwil (Reireimu) SDM Level: 3
Probably one of the better known fanvideos out there, Osana Reimu is a beautiful and very emotional tale revolving around the origins of Rumia, her relationship with the Hakureis, and her struggle to find a different meaning to her life. This is before the spell card rule was created, and the situation in Gensokyo was a bit more grim than what we’re used to.
Chances are you’ve heard about this one at least in passing. And chances are what you heard about it is correct. The big moments hit when they need to and they hit hard. It has a soundtrack comprised mainly of arrangements of Touhou songs, with many made specifically for this series. The circle Liz Triangle seems to have been closely involved but I don’t know the details.
The way little Reimu is depicted reminds me a lot of Yotsuba. Or is that just how kids are? Meanwhile Yukari is surprisingly vulnerable compared to her canon, or even her usual fanon takes. There's reason for it and it works in the context of this story, it’s just a bit weird to see her character like this, even more so in Reireimu.
Being a derivative work, some prior understanding of the original series is expected (the characters), but I think the writing is strong enough that someone who knows very little about Touhou could still enjoy it.
Reireimu is the sequel where the stakes are higher, but is generally a bit softer than the original, I find. Just a bit. It shows the contrast between how Gensokyo used to be and the more familiar present day Gensokyo, where everyone can coexist, with the person who helped bring about that change at the center of it all.
Osana Reimu has a pretty conclusive ending and this sequel invalidates it, but it also brings about its own unique ideas. And again, serves as a contrast to the previous work. I personally think it’s a decent addition, and it’s worth watching both. It’s also a nice, if a bit strange, homage to the Touhou fandom in general.
That Touhou fanfic everyone’s already told you to read.
remu is so squishy and powerful
