Mirror of a Forgotten Paradise

It's a quiet night in Gensokyo.

All seems to be quiet at the Hakurei Shrine. The bugs chirp softly, the fireflies glimmer in the night...

It's a quiet night in Gensokyo, but all of it's inhabitants know better.

"There you are."

The Yokai makes her presence known.

"I was wondering what she did with you."

The child does not answer.

"I hope you know that this was your fault."

Again, the child does not answer.

"If you had just given up your Father's dream, or even scale back on eating humans... she wouldn't have-"

The Yokai stops herself, there's no point in charging someone with a crime they have no memory of committing.

"You're lucky that Knight is so fond of you, if it were up to me you'd already be dead."

The child stares up at her with wide eyes, unbothered by the pile of gore surrounding her.

"You've left us without a proper Shrine Maiden now. Ishmael is too young to take up the helm and..."

She pauses.

"She'll likely resent you for what happened tonight."

Images of the prior fight flash through her mind, the final words of the Shrine Maiden, the desperate screams of the child when she realized what had happened...

They were all too fresh in the Yokai's mind.

"I don't know why I'm even telling you any of this. You certainly don't remember anything."

A though suddenly strikes her.

"Do you even remember you name?"

The child thinks for a moment before looking around, eyes landing on those ragged running shoes she always wore.

"...Don... Quixote? Don Quixote."

The Yokai lets out a humorless laugh.

"And who says that Miko didn't have a sense of humor..."

She laughs at the irony of it all, at the universe for this cosmic joke, at that Shrine Maiden for leaving those shoes, at herself for allowing such a farce to follow through.

Eventually the laughter fades.

"Go then."

The Yokai turns back to the rift from which she came.

"Go and live Don Quixote. I have no further business here."

The child beams.

"I don't really get what you're saying... but thank you Miss Yokai!"

The Yokai does not respond, instead choosing to continue into the rift

"Live well Don Quixote. Make sure her sacrifice wasn't in vain."

It's only within the safety of the rift that she finally allows her tears to fall.

EDIT 24/2/2025, 3:00 AM...

It's 3 in the morning, and my best friend asked me to show him the order in which to watch the Touhou story. Since he isn’t into the games, I had to arrange the episodes of the fan-made anime in chronological order. As an extra, I’ll show him Little Reimu—I just watched it to remind myself what it was like, and here I am again... feeling an immense emptiness in my heart; sometimes I think I'm a masochist. I'll let you know when I've shown this to my friend.

Osana Reimu and Reireimu...

Bro that was amazing, I literally came here with 0 expectations and ended up finding a diamond. I don't know much about touhou lore, I only know about this saga what I saw in memories of phantasm, a metroidvania that I played using Sakuya, the memes and the music that is brutal (I love so much Touhou songs). Speaking of the story of this doujin… I've never wanted so much to see an animation from a manga, this is even on a higher level than many anime I've seen. I didn't cry with the story BUT I felt an emptiness inside with the final chapter. In summary I loved this project, it is too good.

PS: In my head this story is canon, I find it so good that I find it hard to accept that it was made by a fan.

Well, thanks to this fan manga I ended up reading everything about the history of Touhou, the lore of all the games, the wikis of the important characters and videos explaining the lore of the manga that it has. It seems a bit sad to me that in the canon Rumia has practically no importance XD, so with more reason in my head Osana Reimu's manga is canon :v
