Recently cleaned up some oc portraits so that I could update their lore post for the few people that are interested <3 I'll give the same disclaimer as before that I'm not a master worldbuilder or even a very good writer tbh. these are just my dolls I play with for fun.

anyways long post ahead here is your introductory guide to the characters of fitaly (fake italy) a fictional duchy set in the early 16th century.

Antonia de' Farona Antonia is the eldest child of the Duke Niccolò de' Farona. Though they interact infrequently, she has a wretched relationship with Andrea Bernardi, her sister's betrothed. She finds him dismissive and condescending and is suspicious of his behavior around her maid, Lucia. When she is wed, she brings Lucia with her to her husband's villa. The marriage lasts roughly 5 years until her husband passes (I haven't worked out from what yet, but it's not particularly integral to the story.) Seeing as they have no children, her husband's family contests her right to retain his properties and she returns to her father's palazzo, Lucia in tow. She is largely reclusive as a widow and prefers to remain in her apartments, despite having more relative freedom than her sisters. She sees Andrea as undeserving of her father's affection and believes that had she not had the "misfortune" to be born a woman it would be her in his place, and truly loathes him after her return. Despite this, there is a brief attempt by her father to offer her hand in marriage to Andrea after the death of Isabella, but she wholly refuses and begins spreading nasty (but not entirely untrue, nor undeserved) rumors about Andrea throughout court to deter further pursuits.

Isabella de' Farona Second child to the Duke Niccolò. She has been betrothed to Andrea Bernardi since they were both children. She finds him less objectionable than her sister Antonia does, but she is certainly not enamored with him. Isabella is a vivacious and charming girl, though Andrea seems entirely immune to her charms. She dies abruptly at the age of 16 (allegedly after suffering an acute illness, but circumstances are suspect) before she and Andrea are ever wed.

Maddelena de' Farona Maddalena is the Duke's third daughter, and she's rather meek but sweet. She's not particularly pivotal to the story, but it IS important to note that she too has already been betrothed, hence why Marietta had to resort to trying to marry Andrea to her widowed sister.

Paulo de' Farona Paulo is also not particularly relevant, but he's currently the Duke's only surviving male heir (thus far), so he's very doted on.

Lorenzo de' Bassani Administrator in the court of Duke Niccolò de' Farona. Lorenzo was instrumental in arranging a marriage between his young nephew Andrea and Isabella de' Farona with the intent that they would wed when they reached maturity. He hosts Andrea more and more frequently as he gets older, and secures him secretarial work at court.

Andrea Bernardi Andrea was betrothed to Isabella as a child as a means of satisfying his mother's political aspirations. Andrea is educated and ambitious but somewhat dour for his age. He leaves his family's villa to seek employment at court when he's 16, which he secures with the help of his uncle Lorenzo. He coerces Antonia's maid, Lucia, whom he is infatuated with into entering a relationship with him while at court, but shortly thereafter Antonia is wed and takes Lucia with her. During this time, he is taken under the wing of Duke Niccolò, who sees his younger self in Andrea's ambition. Several years later, when Lucia returns to the palazzo after the death of Antonia’s husband, he resumes their relationship while Antonia grows even more resentful of him. Isabelle dies before she and Andrea can fulfill the marriage contract. He is in no hurry to find a new match, but his mother immediately proposes that he marry the Duke's eldest, widowed daughter. Niccolò is inclined to agree, but Antonia causes such a fuss about the matter that it's quickly abandoned. Andrea leaves court abruptly, and takes Lucia with him, much to Antonia's dismay. Meanwhile, his mother secures the daughter of a Spanish ambassador to be his wife. The two have a very brief betrothal period before they're wed and Ysabel goes to live with him away from the eyes at court.

Ysabel de Torres y Mendoza Ysabel is the daughter of a Spanish ambassador and overall a very reserved girl. She finds herself somewhat isolated outside of Spain. Initially, she is tentatively pleased by her marriage to Andrea— she assumes he is keeping a respectful distance to allow her to acclimate— but it becomes clear over time that he is genuinely disinterested in her, and she has to fight for any semblance of affection from him. He makes no secret of Lucia as their marriage progresses, and young Ysabel chooses to make Lucia the object of her loathing rather than confront her unfaithful husband. Overall, it is an unhappy marriage from the outset. Despite this, she and Andrea eventually have children together, whom he is similarly uninterested in, except for their son.

Lucia Lucia is my favorite oc I will not even pretend to be unbiased... She is Antonia's servant and a notorious flirt and gossip. Though several years older than Andrea, she unwittingly gets his attention and is pressured into a relationship with him when he first arrives at court. Having been humiliated by the discovery that her former lover was already married with a wife and children at home, she found Andrea's overwhelming attentions a consolation for her wounded ego and a refreshing change of pace. However, by the time of Antonia's marriage, she's grown restless and is ready to leave Andrea's immature behavior behind. During her years away, she takes another lover (with some unexpected complications) but once again leaves him behind when she and Antonia return to the palazzo. Upon her return, she is surprised to find that Andrea even remembers her— even more so that he again pursues her— but she believes he's matured and acquiesces to further relations with him. After Isabella's death and the disastrous marriage negotiations with Antonia, Andrea offers to offers to take Lucia with him away from the palazzo. She accepts, and briefly experiences a honeymoon period where he freely showers her with affection away from prying eyes. Unfortunately, the arrival of his new wife complicates matters, and tensions begin to escalate as Andrea fails to satisfy the wants and needs of both his wife and mistress all under the same roof.

Bartolomea Lucia's mother (and only known relative) and also a palazzo servant. She claims that Lucia's father was a craftsman who died shortly before Lucia's birth, forcing Bartolomea to find work in the palazzo to support herself and the expected child. The story about her father is 100% not true, but Lucia believes it. Neither she nor her daughter are literate.

The Ghost Comics: A Timeline 2

This is the same timeline, but this time I Have Opinions About Things. It's under cut because it's as long as the last one, the whole torture theme that was so imperative to the comics being something that not everyone wants to read and because some of you really like the comics and I get very sarcastic about the plot holes.

Unspecified time: Riley (age 8) is taken to a punk gig by his father. His eyes are brown despite being the most cerulean orbs to ever have existed in the One True Divine Canon of the Actual Game. He witnesses his father having sex with a woman. He either murders her, or causes her death through negligence. Also, despite Riley being voiced by famous Cockney actor and Eastenders royalty Craig Fairbrass, Riley is inexplicably living in Manchester.

January 2003: Riley visits his mother after an eighteenth month absence. For inexplicable reasons, he is wearing dress uniform.

March 2004: Riley confronts his father at a punk club night in Manchester, tells him not to come home and they fight. For inexplicable reasons, he is wearing dress uniform and a red beret, despite the SAS having worn beige ones since the 1940s. I mean, it's not even like they are the original maroon that they were at the inception of the regiment, which I could kind of forgive, they are actually red. He extracts his brother from wherever he is staying and takes him to rehab.

June 2006: Tommy Riley gets married.

October 30th 2009: Sykes dies during the parachute infiltration, due to a parachute malfunction. After the super stealthy parachute infiltration by night, they all check into a local hotel to "blend in" as sex tourists. It is unclear as to why they merely did not drive in like everyone else. They all go out drinking. Riley refuses the advances of a local sex worker, and follows Cumberland to a brothel.

October 31st 2009: He reports to Vernon that Cumberland was using a brothel where members of the cartel were also seen. That night is...

November 1st 2009: Doomed mission into Coahila, Mexico gets going. It is unclear as to what happened to the night of October 31st. Riley enters to target's villa and finds Cumberland gravely injured. Vernon appears, and helpfully explains in villain monologue that Cumberland witnessed him sabotage Syke's parachute, and this has been reported up the chain of command. Presumably Cumberland thought Sykes was a bit of an arsehole, hence why he didn't pipe up sooner. Vernon kills Cumberland but Riley escapes as far as the villa wall, where he is shot by Roba and captured

December 2009: Gratuitous torture.

February 2010: Gratuitous torture, and sexual assault.

March 2010: Gratuitous torture 3

July 2010: Sparks and Washington escape. Riley is buried alive with the corpse of Major Vernon, but escapes.

August 2010: Riley wanders in the desert, across the US border and is repatriated to the UK.

December 18th 2010: Riley appeals to his commanding officer to be returned to active service.

Later in December 2010: Riley visits his family in Salford. Sparks appears. No one considers Spark's appearance at Riley's next of kin's address to be a massive breach of security, or in fact, any sort of concerning event at all, and Riley and Sparks go drinking. They attempt to sexually assault a woman, but are scared off by the sound of police sirens approaching. Riley returns Sparks to his hotel and tries to stab Sparks, presumably this is because he has come to his sense and doesn't want to be some sort of rapist. They fight, and Washington returns, chasing Riley off. Shots are fired. He returns to his brother's house and finds the family murdered.

He phones his commander and is told he is dead as a result of an accident.

Sparks phones and says he's murdered Riley's psychiatrist. Washington sets the psychiatrists house on fire with a grenade, launched from a grenade launcher.

Later in December 2010 (it might be January, who knows?): Riley visits his father in hospital. He leaves before Sparks and Washington appear, and waltz, unchallenged, into a hospital, and murder Riley's father by shooting him at point blank range.

Even later in December 2010 (again, might be January): Riley murders Washington and Sparks who are inexplicably not wanted in connection with the murder of Riley senior. I fear this may be a cultural misunderstanding and possibly the comic writers live in a country so saturated in gun violence that people getting shot in hospitals is a completely normal occurrence, but there's no way that this would not merit major media attention and would have leant absolute credence to any defence Riley was putting about that he was being framed by rogue US agents. He takes Sparks back to his family's house, dumps the body there and sets the house on fire, putting his dog tags on Sparks to confuse the evidence despite mitochondrial DNA testing being a well-used forensic technique.

Unspecified time between December and February: A Colonel Barber, a character we have never met before, requests that the case into Washington's murder is closed, implying high levels of corruption or negligence in the British Military Police.

February 2011: Riley returns to Mexico and kills Robas.

A representative of Task Force 141 appears to pick up Riley immediate after. Presumably tipped off to the event by Barber. Implying that what? They knew Riley would go after Robas, and had the place on watch to see when this occurred, tracked him through the brush until they felt it was suitably out of the way enough to not be noticed? Does it imply that the whole Robas operation (the MK Ultra 2.0 stuff) was organised by the US and they are just waiting to see whether it has worked or not? And it has??

Magia Record ED Analysis

bAs someone heavily invested in Yachiyo and who has watched the ED many times since its release, I figured I’d go ahead and do a full analysis of it and how it relates to Yachiyo as a character as well as her arc. This analysis is made assuming the anime remains largely the same as the game wrt Yachiyo, and it’s by no means definitive, simply my own personal interpretation. Heavy spoilers ahead of course, especially for Chapter 6 and Mifuyu’s side story. Anyone that cares about spoilers and hasn’t at least played through Chapter 6 of the game would do well not to read this until they’ve either done that or watched through the corresponding section of the anime after it’s aired, but otherwise, read on.

Right off the bat we have a shot of the moon being reflected in Yachiyo’s eyes. Yachiyo is a character very heavily associated with the moon, and this shot serves to reinforce that association.

Yachiyo then blinks and when she opens her eyes the moon’s no longer being reflected in them and we get a more zoomed out shot of her laying down in a puddle and it appears to be lightly raining. Water/rain is yet another thing Yachiyo gets frequently associated with, likely due to its association with sadness, since in Magia Record Yachiyo is initially a very sad, lonely person, something that is very heavily conveyed throughout the course of the ED.

The shot finishes with having Yachiyo smile, notably the only time we see her smile in the entire ED.

This is followed by some shots of real world Tokyo and then shots of Yachiyo walking through a rainy real world Tokyo. These show that Yachiyo’s a woman all alone in a big city, and the rain reinforces Yachiyo’s rain/water association.

We then get a shot of a flashing elevator button as we transition to the next segment of the ED, as segment I like to call the “elevator sequence”.

This segment alternates between shots of Yachiyo in a white dress in an elevator and scenes of a shadowed Yachiyo strutting and striking poses, all in front of a stylistic city background whose colors slowly shift. These bits between the elevator shots are meant to represent Yachiyo modeling, as Yachiyo works as a fashion model and her modeling career was the reason she even became a magical girl in the first place.

Now, for the main meat of the “elevator sequence”, the elevator shots themselves. The elevator is a metaphor for Yachiyo’s life as a magical girl, each elevator shot representing a different important stage of her life as one, with the red rapidly increasing floor number representing the number of days she’s been a magical girl and the seven lights at the top represent her seven years as a magical girl. Since only one light is lit in this shot, it represents Yachiyo when she was just starting out as a magical girl, she’s sitting in a school chair and she’s looking a little anxious, probably because she’s still new to this whole thing. 

The next elevator shot here represents Yachiyo at 14 years old, in her third year as a magical girl. We see Yachiyo looking up as if thinking about something, before shaking her head and looking down. What happened that year that’s significant? Well, Yachiyo and Mifuyu would write each other letters once a year from the time they became magical girls, to act as a sort of will in case either of them died. In Mifuyu’s side story, one of said letters we get to see is from when Yachiyo was 14. (Note that Yachiyo’s age is only mentioned in the Japanese version, for the English localization they changed it to a vague “since my birthday” for some reason) In this letter, Yachiyo mentions she’s realized she likes someone, but doesn’t know what to do. Due to her nature as a magical girl she isn’t sure if she could be with someone at all, even if her crush likes her back. But even still, she wrote a letter to her crush because she doesn’t want to pretend she never had these feelings. She’s unsure whether or not she should have Mifuyu deliver this letter in the case of her death, since getting a letter from a dead girl could be seen as unkind. She ends the letter by asking Mifuyu what she would do. This shot in the ED is meant to convey the uncertainty Yachiyo was feeling during that time.

After a couple more poses, she then curls up into this position, showcasing her anguish and despair. Not even modeling brings her happiness anymore. I feel like now is a relevant time to bring up the description from her “As a Fashion Model” Memoria, which states:  "Whenever I wonder why I keep on modeling, I remember that my life as a Magical Girl started from here. If I were to quit, why, that would render everything: all the trials and tribulations, all the miseries and joys, rather pointless."

We then get another elevator shot. From the 5 lights lit up, we can tell this is representing her 5th year as a magical girl, when she was 16 years old. This was the year Kanae died, hence why she looks kind of sad in this shot. We can also see the screen start to fill with water here, the water representing Yachiyo’s sadness and loneliness.

Our next shot has the shadowed Yachiyo running across the screen as the water continues to rise. 

We then get another elevator shot as the water fills up past halfway. All seven lights are lit, so this represents her 7th year as a magical girl, when she was 18 years old, the year Mel died and she decided to breakup the team because she thought her wish was causing her friends to sacrifice themselves for her, hence why she appears to be crying in this shot. Also of note is that the school chair from the previous elevator shots has been replaced by one of the chairs from Mikazuki Villa. 

After a flickering of lights and a shot of the elevator button again, we get a shot of the elevator again but the chair is now empty and the water in the background has now completely filled the screen.

We then get Yachiyo sinking in the water, metaphorically drowning in her own sorrows.

We get a closer shot of Yachiyo sinking with a film reel overlay as the screen gradually becomes monochromatic, and Yachiyo cries into her hands before we get quick flashes of a few images, which I’ll go over, individually, but overall it shows how Yachiyo is a “prisoner of the past”, as she puts it herself in episode 5.

First we have some photos next to Yachiyo’s mug, symbolizing Yachiyo’s sentimental nature, which she primarily expresses through mugs, buying mugs for each new friend she makes and even keeping the mugs of friends no longer in her life as something to remember them by.

Then we have this letter, which is the letter Yachiyo wrote to Mifuyu about her crush, showing that Yachiyo has Mifuyu on the brain.

Next we get an empty white hospital bed, symbolizing death, something that has been a major source of trauma for Yachiyo, losing not only her grandmother who raised her, but most significantly her friends Mel and Kanae, and her guilt over their deaths weighs heavily on her.

Next are some flowers, which I’m not entirely certain the meaning of because I’m not familiar with flower language, but someone who is will probably be able to tell me in the comments.

Next we have what appear to be some ledgers, perhaps a list of boarding house residents or something like that?

And here we have a cake that says “Happy Birthday Yachan”, meaning it must be from Mifuyu, and the 18 candles mean this was from Yachiyo’s 18th birthday. I love how the Y is just below the A because she ran out of room, it’s so very Mifuyu. Anyway this cake again reinforces that Yachiyo has Mifuyu on the brain. Mifuyu is a very important character for Yachiyo as her main goal throughout Magia Record is to find Mifuyu and bring her home, and as mentioned in the last letter to Mifuyu in Mifuyu’s side story, Yachiyo considered Mifuyu a real partner and even after cutting off everyone else because she thought her wish was killing them, she still wanted to stick with Mifuyu to the end.

We then get Yachiyo surfacing and reaching for the moon, reinforcing her moon association and showing that despite everything Yachiyo still yearns for a better life, and an escape from her sorrow and loneliness.

The shot transitions into a shot of Yachiyo under a black umbrella, and then the op ends with Yachiyo walking while carrying a white umbrella on her arm. This bit is notable because it can be seen as a prequel to the bit in the OP where Yachiyo helps up Iroha (she’s even carrying a white umbrella in that part too), so the umbrella is presumably for her. As the protagonist to Yachiyo’s deuteragonist, Iroha is very important to Yachiyo arc, particularly in Chapter 6 where she defeats the Memory Museum Uwasa by herself even though Yachiyo’s certain Iroha’s just going to end up another friend that sacrificed themselves for her, giving Yachiyo a chance to believe that maybe her wish isn’t killing everyone she loves, which is what ultimately allows Yachiyo to be able to move on and be happy again.

Cyberpunk 2077 Thoughts

Having perused Dark Horse Books’ The World of Cyberpunk 2077 over the past few days, I’ve gotten a better feel for the various basic hooks that structure V’s inception as a protagonist. The short of it is the Polish wizards are on the right path to nailing Pondsmith’s treatment the same way they nailed Sapkowski’s works.

Consider the following as half a brain dump, half a series of prospective spoilers, and also half projection, so either skip this, find some other entry to read, or come back to this come late November.

I know I mentioned three halves, but it’s late and I don’t give a shit.

I’m serious - DO NOT PRESS ON IF YOU’RE THE TYPE TO BLOW A GASKET IF YOU’RE INADVERTANTLY SPOILED. 

The latest Night City Wire as of August exposed three incipient “life paths”, or starting branches of V’s path. I’ll tackle my personal narrative approaches to them in the order of my choosing.

Nomads: CP2077 is set in a world where much of what we understand to define a family has been blown up, tossed around by climate change and nuclear fire and then stitched back together using grit, resourcefulness and the last dying embers of human decency. Nomads are less a group of people defined by blood relations and more a cadre of individuals that share something more significant than mere genes. It might be a common history, a set of shared hardships, a yen for similar automotive and engineering-related projects - whatever it is, that something pulls people together in ways Corpo rats and street kids will never experience.

This seems to define even the average Nomad’s degree of education. Surprisingly, Nomads are the most well-read group in Coronado Bay’s greater area, some caravans reportedly including entire RVs packed with books. Nomads generationally elect teachers and record-keepers and seem to care for those cultural remnants of the old world, before Pondsmith’s paranoid alternate sixties kicked off more than a century’s worth of technological progression and rampant dehumanization. To a Night City native, a Nomad’s speech patterns appear precious and uselessly florid, while they might appear almost normal to us - maybe slightly touched by the fact that Grandpa Joe or whatever really wanted you to have your Greek classics down before you were old enough to repair your first CH00H2 carburetor on your own.

That new, mega-clustered version of family matters immensely to the Nomads. You identify to yours the same way Orcs in Shadow of War might refer to their clan, or the same way a Scottish clan might design specific visual cues identifying its members. In normal circumstances, Nomads live, thrive and die in service to the clan - and the opening segment for V’s Nomad origins suggests that something happened to his clan. They’re gone, or so the narration says, without going into further detail. Is V responsible? We don’t currently know. As it stands, however, he is a lone Nomad in a clan of one, and soon finds himself pushed out of the Californian wastes and into Night City’s neon-drenched streets.

Seeing this, I considered the narration as an admission of guilt on V’s part. He feels responsible, and hopes that grinding his way to success will in some way atone for what he’s done. Consequently, my Nomad V would be as gruff as could be, but as moral and upstanding as the setting allows. He considers himself as having been invested with an example to set, and would intend to set his sights on more than just filthy lucre. Honest filthy lucre is what matters to him, if that concept even is possible: he might deal in unsavory types and illicit activities, but he always does so with a certain moral rectitude - as a tough and gruff, lean and stringy type you can occasionally catch in his battered Thornton pick-up truck with his feet up on the dashboard and a dog-eared copy of Plato’s Republic in hand. Jackie honestly wonders how he can put up with that Greek pendejo’s endless words and the lack of scrolling animations, while V keeps his Kiroshi optics’ News ticker locked onto grassroots Leftist RSS feeds that stoke a bit of an ignored Rockerboy ethos in him. Quoting Marx in Night City might feel like trying to teach lab rats in the finer points of string theory, but it at least feels genuine to him, compared to the predigested sociopolitical pap Militech, Arasaka and their ilk are more than happy to spew on the airwaves. 

There’s a lot to be pissed off about in Richard Night’s failed utopia, a lot of fat cats to gut and buildings to burn. Still, he leaves the glowering act and the churning rage to Johnny Silverhand’s imprinted ghost. Being more of a down-low, gun-toting choomba than a classic Street Samurai, Vincent “V” Carson thinks first and strikes second.

Vinnie isn’t much for electric guitars and anarchy in the UK, much less in the Free State of Southern California; but he does love the occasional Leonard Cohen ballad or the occasional shot of Johnny Cash’s melancholy. Having picked up something of a Northern Texas drawl while cruising, he might feel like Harry Dresden’s Good Ol’ Boy cousin, magic tricks here pushed aside in favor of a measure of dermal plating and a good ol’ fashioned twelve-gauge and revolver combo. Not being much of a techno-fetishist, he considers his optics and his skull jack as being begrudging concessions to an era that looks down on fully “ganic” types. Having grown up with TV serials and the occasional visor-based Braindance all depicting cyberpsychosis as something vile that utterly dehumanizes its sufferers, he’s naturally wary around anyone who seems a little too giddy with the prospect of taking a few scalpels to perfectly decent muscles and bones.

His Thornton is where most of his Eddies go, and yes, he’s named his truck Suzie. Suzie’s done right by him, and he’ll do right by her - unless someone else with a pretty smile and a working moral compass makes him swoon.

Street Kids: if you weren’t taught on the highways or in corporate arcologies, odds are you became a positive blip in an otherwise grim statistic, one of the myriad fucked-up kids raised by other fucked-up kids with more seniority than you. With no roads and paid-for nannies, you survived off of grifts, grit, violence, deceit, smarts and gumption - and that, in its own screwball way, creates its own blood ties. You’re wise by Heywood’s standards - streetwise, that is - and you speak the back-alleys’ lingua franca of threats, insinuation and casual intimidation like no other.

If only Jackie hadn’t fingered that Rayfield, huh? This beaut could’ve been paydirt! Well, at least for a week or so, judging by the fact that hundreds of car thefts are reported across Night City on a daily basis. At least, Dean - who also goes as “V” - got to make a new friend while out in the pokey, and managed to shake a few proverbial trees... They’ve got a short-lease in with Trauma Team’s frequency and could maybe hook themselves up with a sweet finder’s fee for anyone who’s on the verge of death at the hands of the city’s Scavengers...

Little does V know, that’s selling Trauma Team as well as their clients painfully short. Shows of gratitude don’t mean anything if you’re not packing the right social status. He barely remembers his birth parents as it is, and grew up the fifth grubby prospect of one of the Valentinos’ “school clubs” (hence the nickname) - where the points of study refer to the proper observances to be held in Jesus Malaverde’s presence, intensive Chicano and Spanish immersion, as well as the handling of common types of weaponry.

Vincent and Dean would be likely to shoot one another, if placed in the same room. One clings onto nearly-lost value systems, while the other commodifies what can be discarded like so much flesh - only inasmuch as his efforts to pacify his unofficial five or six abuelas force him to forego extensive modifications. His knives and wrist-mounted data port are his main tools of the trade, although Dean keeps his hacking creds along the bare minimum. Why bother, when melting an ATM’s ICE wall and whacking the cops with a baseball bat is all you need? There’s a type of gun for nearly anything else, if someone knows where to look...

Dean has no last name, and is consequently registered as “Dean Smith” in the city’s Census records. That doesn’t suggest, however, that he wouldn’t want to make one for himself. As he’s less focused on the city’s legends than on its kingmakers and pawn-movers, Dexter DeShawn strikes him as someone to emulate, watch and learn from - all with a decent degree of caution.

Being on top matters a little less to him than eventually pulling Heywood’s stings. With a little fear and a lot of persistence, Dean “V.” Smith knows that one day, he won’t go hungry on a weeknight. To that end, he’s certainly a hearty eater, here paired with extensive free-weight training regimens and the use of anabolic stimulants. Oh, sure, he’ll speak of family and blood like the best soldier festooned in Santa Muerte visual codices, but his friend Jackie’s got a mind like a slow and steady steel trap.

Either Dean blows his new fellow Street Samurai out of the pond, or he does. Unlike Jackie, however, Dean isn’t realistic about it. Friendships are a rare gift in Heywood, if not the rest of Night City, and Dean’s convinced that Jackie could conceivably look past his final betrayal.

Corpo: nowadays, we’re mostly familiar with the idea of one-percenters creating a bubble of affluence for themselves. Boarding schools, private villas, prebooked vacations across the globe’s priciest spots, access to the hottest trends on the minute of their inception - what this tends to forego is the level of social disconnect that’s required in order to stay relevant. We’re only just waking up to the consequences of letting an aging, crusty first-generation Yuppie be crowned the ruler of the free world, and even someone who’s behind on their Bret Easton Ellis could tell you that Donald J. Trump is a sociopath and a narcissist.

Take that mindset, and cultivate it into an ethos that’s taught to children from a very early age - children who live, eat, shit and breathe in accordance with their parent corporation’s tenets. The more placid, mid-tier lifers in the genre are called sararimen, in reference to William Gibson’s use of the term to designate low-level company workers in Chiba City. A bit like Shenzhen’s factory workers and execs, everything in a corpo’s life is in service to the corporation.

In Night City, as of 2077, two major players have installed this culture of total obedience in their roster. Their names are Militech and Arasaka. One is a juggernaut in the field of military-grade personal defence, the other has a wider grasp and reach, but is more fragile. Arasaka owes that fragility to the last fifty years having involved its re-establishment and reconstruction. Fifty years ago, Night City’s Corpo Plaza was blasted open by a thermonuclear discharge that sent the Japanese giant packing. The charges had been set by three Edgerunners: Rogue, Morgan Blackhand and Johnny Silverhand - accessorily a well-respected Rockerboy and front-line member of the band SAMURAI. Only Rogue survived that fateful night, or so the street lingo goes, having gone on to start a legitimate consultation business as well as a fruitful career in the hospitality business. Her bar, the Afterlife, is Night City’s hotspot for every techie, script kiddie and accomplished cyber-spelunker.

Our gal Vivian knows this. She knows this, because Vivian “V.” Banks lives two lives.

In one of them, she’s a lean and hungry Junior Executive in Arasaka’s Counter-Intel division. In that line of work, you either fuck someone’s prospects or protect your own, or ensure that no up-and-comer just out of the company’s Law School program manages to push you off the board. She knows full well that in centuries past, corpo-speak was made up of mild euphemisms that at best referred to destroying a rival’s prospects or lifelihood. Taking a life was something that required careful deliberation, especially when tossing a fat severance bonus into an aging CFO’s three-piece pockets and letting your erstwhile rival snort cocaine off of the rolling hips of Tahitian dancers was so much cheaper...

Nowadays, zeroing someone is commonplace.

You’re born for Arasaka, and chances are you’ll die for Arasaka just the same. Viv’s killed, lied, cheated and even stole her way to her position, remorse being this vaguely churning sense of coldness in her gut that keeps one-night stands coming in and out of her bedroom. She only remembers her parents as being credit-chip enablers and personal enhancement drug addicts, cutting ties with them so completely on the day of her official hiring that it felt more like a tacit understanding.

On most days, sex and booze keep the cold at bay. On most days, Vivian Banks is a class-act of a sociopath. The stronger she gets, however, and the more paranoid her targets become - which reinforces her own paranoia. Before long, playing the part of one of Arasaka’s several poisonous flowers won’t work anymore.

Unfortunately, she trusts no-one. No Fixer could put her in contact with any hacker she’d trust, no rando fresh off the street with a retro-tinted National Arms plinker would satisfy her. To climb up the ranks and maybe share tea with Old Man Saburo himself, she needs a spotless performance record. She needs skills.

More importantly, she needs a reputation. That means leaving Arasaka Tower and mingling with the experts in their own field - and it means filling out her back book of successful hits. The drinks at the Afterlife are decent enough, but what she’s after is an official in.

If she can get to Rogue, or maybe even hook up with a ripperdoc not bought and paid for by the company, she might be able to score both new skills and increased performance...

If it were as simple as slitting Janet’s throat in HR and diving her way to an orgiastic performance review quite innocently left on the department’s server, she would’ve done that already. Viv is my obvious Pure Stealth build candidate, my main-line hacker and would-be engineer with a thing for black power skirts and designer offensive augments.

With that said, we’re months ahead of schedule, all the good shit’s already come out, so we’re stuck playing the waiting game...

Personally, I’m leaning towards him being fair on this, since unlike Conan during swimsuit and Ran during Chinatown, Rumi doesn’t seem to have recollection issues (since she boldly calls Kohji foolish, meaning she remembers Kohji’s actions), so it doesn’t make sense for her to recall out-of-context snipbits when she already remembers the context (unlike Ran and Conan).

Review: The Butlerian Jihad (Dune)

Where to start... Just having finished The Butlerian Jihad by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson I find myself disappointed by the whole thing, though the writing was on the wall hundreds of pages ago. I had originally hoped that the rather thick softcover would cover the topic so broadly displayed on its cover but even of that I remain in doubt...

The Butlerian Jihad is a prequel written to Frank Herbert’s Dune cycle. The inspiration is a historical event used in those books to explain the absence of thinking machines and artificial intelligence. Herbert always painted in broad enough strokes to leave the history of his world in mystery while also providing explanation as to the why of his specific setup. The forces in play he set up for his world seem like they either were never meant to be described in more detail, and if they were, one would wish a master such as the late Herbert himself would have done so.

Prequels often suffer from similar weaknesses but even as they do, this one reads more like a Michael Stackpole novel than a true installment of Dune. Stackpole I remember fondly for his BattleTech novels that I read as a teenager. He wove a set of events, provided action scenes, a little hint of sex here and there. He is a solid, entertaining author, firmly rooted in the craft of making action-oriented, logical books, even trilogies if needed. The book at hand can also at most claim this for itself: It has been crafted. As so many prequels it also fails to surprise or to add, staying firmly rooted within the canon of the books it tries to lead up to.

Now, fandom is of course a reason for this. A prequel often avoids changing established facts or at best makes them seem in a different light. A movie like Solo just plays out the moments once alluded to in throwaway sentences. That is, of course, tripe. The Star Wars movies known as the prequels, on the other hand, try to also paint a picture of a dying world, and as such they have something to offer even if the outcome is predictable. Somewhere in between The Butlerian Jihad finds itself.

Little did I know that this was the first book in a trilogy when I grabbed it. In picking up the book at a used book store the outside fails to mention this fact, though it is mentioned inside the cover in the form of an ad. This already explains a lot about the book because it clocks in at roughly 1 1/2 times the pages of the vastly superior God Emperor of Dune, while offering precious little in terms of plot development. I mean, books 2, 3, and 4 of the Dune cycle have sometimes been criticized for their pacing but I think The Butlerian Jihad has them beat. A rather too big cast is introduced to serve as backdrop for impressions that are meant to convey scale and nature of the conflict to us. Sadly, a lot of the book merely reads like filler, often repeating the same point about a character without any poignancy.

Example? Head sorceress Zufa Cenva of Rossak is incapable of appreciating anything about her lover Aurelius Venport or her daughter Norma Cenva at the beginning, middle, and end of the book. Aurelius in turn tries to find her acknowledgment at the beginning, middle, and end of the book. The only one of the three that has a minimal character arc is Norma, who, after finding a job, dismisses her perpetually angry mother. Her minimal yet entirely predictable character arc makes her seem at least somewhat interesting. 

Predictability is one of the main traits of the whole book. Now, prequels tend to be rather predictable as one can spot telltale signs of where a certain idea is heading. TBJ makes this all-too-easy. This wouldn’t be so lame were the book not constantly to praise humanity’s ability to surprise, something which the characters (and so in turn the authors) fail to do entirely.

The book also choses a weak setup. Thinking machines need not equate a singularity. The arch villain of the story, however, is “Omnius the evermind.” An AI ruling most of human-inhabited planets, he serves as a rather weak counterpart for the story. He is entirely predictable, seems to have little ideas of his own, a weak ability to execute on them, and frankly, plain dumb and ineffective. One wishes for “him” to encounter Marvin the depressed robot and commit robo suicide.

Now, Omnius watches everything through his watcheyes but nothing relevant for the plot to proceed. His processing capacity is apparently insufficient to monitor and surveil globally. Even after 1,000 years he seems to have completely miscalculated how many machines he needs to keep humanity in check - and he also seemed to have no impetus to build an ever larger array of thinking machines to bring up the number. He seems entirely content to keep a predictable contingent of somehow independent-yet-not-independent robots around and sulk on his worlds while humans live as slaves. His motivations are completely unclear and entirely illogical throughout the book. He does not appear alien or enigmatic but entirely indecisive, flawed, and unable to press a point. He shares thoughts among his various copies through a few update ships which transfer copies. Even just thinking how these updates could possibly work seems more interesting than the book itself.

His partner in crime is Erasmus, a somewhat independent robot which Omnius keeps around as a sort of entertainment or to see if he can create something helping to predict humans better. Erasmus is a good thinking machine in that he is also entirely predictable. But maybe just because he is a character in this novel... Having to serve as the villain standin he conducts experiments reminiscent of Josef Mengele, twin studies no less, and needless vivisections. Being a device he definitely serves as a convenient plot device... He also proves that the thinking machines are entirely stupid to begin with... leading to one of the weakest points in the book.

Erasmus has actually a wager with Omnius that he can trigger a revolt inside the slave population, proving to Omnius (in a sort of “I’m smarter than you” move) that he is useful in understanding what motivates them. He is entirely incapable of anticipating that this would lead Omnius to see humanity as a bigger threat than anticipated and hence in need of extinction. Erasmus weak logical thinking has no consequences because that copy of Omnius is conveniently eradicated through the following revolt and plot events that allows Erasmus to escape to serve as the villain in another book again.

Now, the events that Erasmus sets in motion prove that almost no human in this book shows any agency. Their priorities are set by outside forces. The core of human rebellion starts with Erasmus formenting unrest and telling Omnius about it and yet nothing of it is discovered by Omnius even after that revelation. Conveniently the most dangerous rebel leader and his people are in place right when Erasmus creates an atrocity, triggering a rebellion. Given the constant cruelty exposed by the cyborg Titans throughout the book this moment seems artificial, contrived, and reeks of deus ex machina, apparently one of the main ways this book is crafted.

As an example of a human plot device, Vorian Atreides is aboard an Omnius update ship also for plot convenience. His ship conveniently reaches the newly conquered colony Giedi Prime exactly as it has been retaken by free humans but before they can claim the world fully, offering an immediate window for his escape. He also manages to return to Earth exactly after the rebellion started there but before the rebels storm Erasmus’ villa of horrors in spite of the fact the rebellion started there.

In essence the book has a staggering variety of plot holes and events linked by deus ex machine timing. The contradictions in the plot are also striking. The Titans are a group of brains-in-jars that use giant robot bodies. They originally subjugated humanity through hacking the original AIs serving mankind with more aggressive programming to serve as their army. They in turn grew complacent and when the laziest one gave in turn too much self-control to a thinking machine, Omnius was “born” and immediately and rapidly took over.

One has to wonder... how? Omnius, after 1,000 years of rule (an often repeated point) seems to sluggishly keep his copies in sync, yet managed to outpace the Titans in his rebellion and took over before they could do anything to prevent it. Omnius is behaving like a fast-replicating computer virus when the story needs it and remains an indecisive villain the rest of the time. His inability to deal with human surprise is constantly reiterated yet the Titans find no way to foil him in a millenium.

The Titans, in turn, are weak characters as well. They are constantly aggressive, repeat the same personality flaws ad infinitum, and only make smart moves when it the plot requires a setback for the free humans. The Titans and Omnius never resort to a simple plan where a plan prone to failure presents itself. Agamemnon’s plan to destroy a shield generator in the first battle is foiled by concentrating troops and fire. Defending the thing that acts as main defense of a planet is not actually tactical genius but is presented as such. (Omnius’ spy probes manage to retrieve the perfect intelligence without anyone mentioning how - like how can they know about the Holtzman Scrambler in the first place?) In the second battle, Agamemnon wins by simply dropping a big thing on top of the shield generator instead. Agamemnon loses his third battle because he apparently has no means to think. Cymeks (brains-in-jars with robot bodies) are especially vulnerable against psionic suicide attacks by the sorceresses of Rossak. In order to deal with that problem, he goes to Rossak, and uses a cymek assault against the group most effective against them. The cymeks get annihilated by predictable means and the Titans leave. Why did we need that scene?

So, in two out of the three battles Agamemnon knows what’s his enemies’ strong and weak points are and completely fails to use them. If all the book wants to do is portray Agamemnon as an incompetent fool then it certainly does well. How did he ever win any battles before? He can’t win them with overwhelming odds and superior intelligence. Sun Tzu is disappointed in you, Agamemnon. How did you conquer an empire before?

The whole thing seems like a comedy of errors. Somehow it needs Erasmus’ duplicate folly of inciting dissent and killing a child in plain view to start a comparatively successful rebellion. The rebellion succeeds largely with element of surprise and few suitable weapons and even destroys a giant Titan. Days later the much bigger ranks of the rebels are incapable of offering any significant resistance to... more Titans, doing the same... because it is not convenient for the plot. It is not really explained how they succeed initially, but they do. They in turn fail to achieve anything inconvient to the plot. And they are all killed to prove how cruel the machines and Titans really are. To top the whole love affair with genocide, the free humans arrive ... months later? And then blast all of Earth with nuclear weapons. Which conveniently prevents that copy of Omnius to ever get cloned. Which hasn’t happened yet because plot.

The slave rebellion on the “free human” world of Poritrin in turn fails but is there to show how cruel humans can be, including another one of these scene of senseless gore that the book provides whenever it wants to make a lasting impact on the reader. One is left with the impression that machines are cruel, brains-in-jars are even more cruel, and free humans are often ignorant and cruel, too, unless they just happen to love their babies or hang out with their family. 2002 also did not seem like a year that needed the point “slavery is evil” reiterated, but somehow the book feels compelled to do so. In the end, all is swallowed by plot convenience: The rebellion on Earth succeeds as far as needed to move the plot forward. Several protagonists escape Earth. Then it falters all of a sudden in spite of having momentum. The rebellion on Poritrin runs in parallel and also suddenly falters in spite of spreading rapidly. The rebellion on Earth is supposed to be ignited by religious fervor inspired into it by one protagonist. The religious fervor of the Zensunni and Zenshiites kepts as slaves on Poritrin, however, proves entirely ineffective.

If all of this is meant as a deep parable on world events or anything I failed to notice it because of the weak writing and pacing of the book. As a prequel it fails to introduce anything new. Its characters are inconsistent. Their reasoning is weak and one is surprised that among the billions of humans in a thousand years no one had better ideas than this. Also, a big part of the story is driven by characters that feel they must act for some reason - like the impatient Agamemnon. How did they fail to act for centuries before? How did their constantly flaring tempers not put them in trouble much earlier? It is said that machines are incredibly patient but you can see the Titans are not. Why does Omnius keep slaves around at all? What does he need of humanity?

The book succumbs to the illogical behavior of its protagonists in the end. The free humans nuke Earth in a symbolical gesture. What is that meant to accomplish? Their reasoning does not make sense at all. They already know the rebellion there is dead. It however provides a good rationale for Omnius to keep humans around: as hostages.

The book revels in portraying cruelty and gore. It also meanders about in search of a plot point it actually, tries to make. All the things setting up the importance of Arrakis also have to happen in the same time frame as if hurriedly setting up a stage. Holtzman shields and Holtzman effect, glowglobes and suspensor fields, the importance of Arrakis spice, folding space - most of this is set in motion during this book, in course of the same few months, as if the authors want to emulate the old fallacy that technological progress is somehow supercharged during times of war (when it really is mostly the hunt for weaponized applications in reality). But there are ten millenia between this time and the next book - I hope they invented something after this war as well?

So, if you think my review meanders all over the place, then let me tell you this book does so much much worse. It portrays parallel story threads for the sake of other books that amount to little in this one. The motivations of both thinking machines and human characters are exceedingly simple. The biggest character arc in this book is reserved for Serena Butler: Starting as a humanitarian she goes from wanting to help people to being abused and tortured and ends up as wanting some sort of glorified revenge.

Unless the other two books are of a higher quality, I’m sure no plot contrivance will be left unattempted to force the needed outcome.
