ds' remixes are great but they're also really funny to me when it comes to their themes like. remix 2, 3, 4 and 7 all have consistent, identifiable themes (tropical, whatever "spaghetti western" is, love/romance/however you describe it, and clouds respectively). remix 1, 5, 6 and 9 retexture most of their games but i have no idea what their themes are. and remix 8 doesn't bother at all-

I played Rhythm Heaven (the original) at like *9* years old. (Played it on my eldest sibling's DS lite, which made me want the DSi). Last one I played was megamix though not a lot, mainly heard my brother playing through it. Before that was rhythm heaven fever which I played a decent amount but ended up watching brother beat it fully later (watching them do the last remix was rlly funny)

For me, my first Pokémon game was Ruby. I was 9 or 10 at that time, and I didn't really have my own game console. My parents couldn't really afford one anyway and saw me interacting with Photoshop and doll dress-up games online being enough entertainment for me, but I was really curious about how the Pokemon games were played so I ended up learning how to download an emulator and played it through there. I still remember in my Ruby playthrough, I started with Torchic and probably had a Pikachu in the team thanks to the Safari Zone!
Because I have an emulator on hand, it's then I started picking up Emerald, FireRed, Crystal and some GBA spin-off games later on. And when I had my hands on a GBA SP and DS, I got to try out more Pokemon games, once again using the power of piracy and using an R4 cart.
I still do play the games! I have played through Sword, Legends: Arceus and Violet, the latter was the first ever Pokemon game I managed to complete its pokedex in all my life. Some mobile Pokemon games like Quest, GO, Masters EX and Cafe ReMix too. I've also acquired a 3DS now just so I can play Gen 6 & 7 games since I've skipped on them (due to not having a 3DS back then.) And I plan to revisit some older games here and there whenever I'm not distracted by other RPGs, haha! I've even dabbled a bit of the TCG too thanks to @spagonia, but it'll take a long while for me to put my money on collecting cards if I really get invested.
I still sort of interact with the fandom! I like looking at fanart and other fanworks being put out by fans. But most of the time I converse with friends on various platforms such as Twitter, Plurk and Discord. If you feel like chatting up with me, just hit me up here or ask for my Discord if you'd like.
Kinda curious whats everyone’s first Pokémon game? Personally mine was Sun
If it’s a spin-off not listed specify in the reblogs what it was, also some fun additional questions:
Do you still play the games?
Are you still active in the fandom?
What starter did you pick from said game?

Let's talk about: Pokemon Day 2024
First off, I went into this direct with high expectations. My predictions (for games) were:
A Pokemon Legends Game
A Remake/Ported version of a mainline series game (specifically, B&W or Johto)
The livestream addressed a few things that I am not too familiar with/don't use, so I won't be going into that. This includes Pokemon Horizons: the series, Pokemon Masters EX, and Pokemon Cafe Remix. I can't provide any opinions on if these announcements were exciting or not, so not bothering trying!
Let's begin with the announcement of the Gen 1 Tera Raid Mightiest Mark Battles for Pokemon Scarlet/Violet. I will be playing these! I got the mightiest mark charizard when that raid first dropped, so would love to get the other mighty Kanto starters, especially my long-time favourite, Blastoise. Long live the water starters!!!
Next up, Pokemon Trading Card Pocket. I didn't think much when I first saw it, but the game premise is really growing on me. After all, I am such a sucker for gacha games. Yeah. Anyone remember Quidd, the sticker trading game? Had me in an absolute chokehold, so I feel like this is right up my alley. I'm not sure if I'll actually battle people besides friends, but I'll be all over opening the packs up. I'll definitely be giving this a try.
Fun Side Story Time! I used to be obsessed with the trading cards. I had a collection of hundreds of cards from the early 2000s, with a lot of rare ones thrown in there. Always took them to school to play around with the other pokemon kids. I WAS ROBBED. One of those playground losers stole my entire collection, plus a Webkinz from me. I have been too sad to get involved with the cards since then.
Then we got the new playable pokemon added to Pokemon Unite that include Miraidon, Falinks, and Ceruledge. I have actually revisited Pokemon Unite in the last week. It's still kicking, with enough players to fill matches, and still pretty fun. Forever a Mew main. My only thoughts on this announcement though, is why Falinks? I never played Sword/Shield, so maybe Falinks has some secret hidden fanbase I just never heard of? Also, way to leave Pokemon Scarlet in the dust, Nintendo. You couldn't of added one exclusive from each of the Gen 9 games instead of pulling both from Violet? Oh well.
Surprisingly, I've been using Pokemon Sleep for the past two months, so I'm actually kind of excited about the game receiving legendaries! I think I'm too new to the game to actually come across one in a reasonable amount of time, but it's nice to know it's a possibility.
Now we have Nintendo's grand finale: Pokemon Z-A.
My first thought was, the hell is this?
So I have never actually played Kalos. I was a broke kid whose mom did not think they needed a 3DS, as I already had a DS at home (DS lite WAS NOT the same, Mom!). There was no way 12 year old me was going to scrape up enough pocket money to buy it, so just never bothered. So I have absolutely no emotional connection to Kalos whatsoever. I was jealous of the people who got to play, though. They got Sylveon, an adorable new addition to the Eevee line, and a complete powerhouse! It's one of my favourites.
Honestly, all expectations aside, this game looks good. Legends Arceus was an absolute game-changer in the pokemon series, With a complete new storyline and game mechanics, and I have in fact been waiting for another instalment in the Legends series. Although I had (severely) high hopes for Unova, I'm excited to visit Kalos for my very first time! I can't tell at all if this game is set in past or future. I initially thought past, but not as far back as Legends Arceus. More like, right before major city development takes place. But everyone else seems to think it's super futuristic! I don't really see that working though, if it follows a similar plot to Legends Arceus, since the pokedex would already be completed, as well as most major pokemon research developments. It's all speculation, I'm no expert at all, but that's what I got from the trailer.
I will admit, I am terribly disappointed by the lack of Unova :( If you know me, then you know I am a hardcore Gen-5 stan, so I was praying to the pokemon gods to PLEASE GIVE ME THIS. I'm honestly surprised they avoided remakes completely. Could it be because of the backlash from BDSP? People hated the chibis (personally, I didn't love them but it wasn't awful) so maybe they thought to hold off on remaking more. I just thought with the amount of pointers from the Scarlet/Violet DLC, we would've gotten SOMETHING. A girl can only hope.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on Pokemon Day 2024. Lemme know what you guys think!

okay so although it shook up the order mario kart wii made sure to have a 64, double dash, and ds track in each cup, and it split up the blocky 2.5D courses to only have two from Super Mario Kart and two from Super Circuit. i respect it, wanting to keep equal-feeling representation but lumping the games with similar track designs together a bit. that's fine.
in mario kart 7, the pressure is just too big to hold. there are now -2 SNES tracks, although i gotta admit putting in its Rainbow Road was the best way to make it up to it. -3 N64 tracks -1 GBA track, seriously, and it's another Bowser Castle like every other game with retro courses has had! come on, man! -2 GCN tracks -4 DS and Wii tracks, one for each cup. sure, fair enough, recency bias, and those are the ones that have either run on weaker hardware or can be made in a similar engine.
mk8, i have barely played this one and at this point it has completely lost the plot. no kind of symmetry or intentionality so everything is uneven. -1 SNES track, and 1 GBA track too. you know what, i get it, at some point the slick HD aesthetic of MK8 just cannot deal with something that low fidelity. at least it gives those tracks the lavish treatment MK8 does best. -4 N64 tracks, one for each cup. the game actually pays an odd amount of love to MK64, including having its Rainbow Road -2 GCN tracks -3 DS tracks -2 Wii tracks -3 3DS tracks
oh, but you're gonna tell me "what about 8 deluxe? what about tour?" what do i look like, the kind of person who would individually count the number of mktour tracks in a game i don't own? the kind of person who'd count the amount of ds representation in a mobile live service? well guess what! i am.
so, look, mario kart tour stopped getting new tracks a couple years ago. it was never really designed to be symmetrical or part of any singular whole, especially since it apparently phases tracks in and out over time? so, let's just see what it's doing. -15 SNES tracks in their basic form -10 SNES tracks in a remixed form just for Tour, which is kinda unique and cool, moving on. -8 N64 tracks, including two separate versions of Kalimari Desert (it's not even that good, man) 14 GBA tracks 7 GCN tracks 7 DS tracks 9 Wii tracks 12 DS tracks
8 Deluxe! this game is trying to be The mario kart game, the one that makes Wii and DS and all the others obsolete. it will never succeed at that, i still fuckin love MKWii and it has a very passionate playerbase to this day, but in raw statistics MK8D takes it. let's see if it has any favorites from series past. (in advance, i am not counting tracks that were technically in Tour first but aren't counted as Tour stages. i'm pretty sure those were announced for 8D at the same time as for Tour, so it's less that these are "Tracks from Tour" and more "Tracks for Tour and 8 Deluxe that happened to get into Tour first" now then!
-4 SNES tracks! it's amazing how with the power of DLC we can finally catch up to mario kart ds in terms of snes representation -6 N64 tracks! turns out deluxe did not value the 64 and was just picking what it saw as the best of the pack. -8 GBA tracks! i have never played super circuit so i don't have much to say about this one! -7 GCN tracks! -8 DS tracks! -11 Wii tracks! -8 3DS tracks! -15 Tour tracks, not even counting the ones i purposefully omitted! this has more primacy in the scope of mario kart 8 deluxe than any other retro game, and almost has as much as the original mk8's new track list!
it's weird talking about this, because normally when i do a deep dive collecting data about a game, it's to serve some end in teaching about game design. but proper legacy game representation is the kind of thing that i myself, and most of you on this website, will never be able to do. it's the tricky thing, i have these great ideas for third games, but they require me to make a first and a second game. it's harder for an indie developer to really be able to make a consistent series out of something, when a lot of the appeal of indie gaming is in its novelty. it's a lot harder to make games for someone like me to autistically analyze, because it often requires an intense amount of legacy to compare and contrast with.
but i also think that like, even if you're making a New IP™, your work is in conversation with what came before it. your own previous work is legacy, your inspirations are legacy, and you decide what to do with that in your own work. even if some nerd out there doesn't obsess over my game daybreak hearts specifically, that they find something about it to obsess over in their general hyperfixation on tactics games or queer rpg's. and i am mindful of what i represent from that legacy, and what i bring into the future.
mario kart ds had a perfectly symmetrical distribution of retro courses. each retro cup had 1 track from the snes, one from the n64, one from the gba, and one from the gamecube, in that order. no game is underrepresented, and no game is overrepresented.
