FOOTLOOSE
New Victoria Theatre, Woking 13/6/22
Tumblr media
Where a lot of towns have suffered from Covid, upon returning to the New Victoria Theatre for the first time since the pandemic, Woking has grown to similar heights as to the mysterious, larger-than-life statues placed around the town. Since first attending shows here, I've seen the area expand into more than just the location The Jam were from; with more hospitality establishments cropping up - potentially meeting the demand of the out-of-town visitors to the theatre, and locals wanting to make a night of seeing a show.
Just 25 mins on the train from London Waterloo, or 8 minutes from Guildford, a short walking distance from Woking railway station, outside the theatre, there's now a giant screen set up for the Wimbledon tennis tournament, with oversized deckchairs and equally-size-matched chess sets, next to table tennis and a new reatuarant with outdoor seating, catering for all dietary requirements.
If you're looking for the beauty of a traditional theatre, it may not be found in this 1,300 capacity early '90s, modern build but the magic of what's on stage is not lost in this major touring venue, which may give you a chance to see a show before it even hits the West End ('Derren Brown: Showman' was here last week!).
Tonight is the opening night for the musical of the 1980s' screen sensation 'Footloose'. Billed as a decade defining dance-a-thon, the story is actually more fitting to now; having only just come out of a lockdown where dancing was illegal (and still is, in certain parts of the world).
Stepping into the dancing shoes of Ren McCormack, Joshua Hawkins' enthusiastic energy in the opening title track made him a clear Marty McCfly contender for when Back To The Future tours. With the cast playing all their own instruments on stage for other '80s' era singalongs including 'Out for a Hero', 'Almost Paradise' and 'Let’s Hear It For The Boy', we overheard the punters infront of us complaining that the already-over-exaggerated American dialect could not be heard over the band. They were mute during most of the obvious comedy cliches though, which were met with silence from the audience, where laughter should have been to break away from the deeper and darker storyline, running underneath.
With half of the on-stage-chemistry between the two young leads being owed to Lucy Munden (Ariel), their talent was complimented by good, all round performances from Darren Day (her on-stage father, Rev) and Ben Mabberley (Willard, in Jake Quickenden's abscene) - whose character's growing confidence in dancing and girlfriend, Rusty, was a delight for the whole auditorium.
If you're planning a trip to the New Victoria Theatre over the next couple of weeks, our top picks there are: the Miss Marple mystery 'A Murder Is Announced' (21st - 25th June), Would I Lie To You's 'Brydon, Mack & Mitchell (26th - 28th June [sold out]), Strictly Come Dancing's 'Oti Mabuse' (30th June), feel-good musical  'Dreamboats & Petticoats' (5th July - 9th July), the 65th anniversary tour of 'The Drifters' (10th July) and more Strictly Come Dancing from 'Here Come The Boys' (12th July).

okay i need help deciding where i should make ren's hometown be for the fic i'm writing
under the cut bc this is a loooooooong post team (but there's a poll!)
so in the book it's really not specific, like At All as to where he lives, but Georgia says in her letter than she lives in the other corner of the country to him.
i don't get particularly aucklandy vibes off him so even tho thats where he ends up i dont think he started there
so. also there is a strait in the middle of the country and while busses would be cheap-
wait its 1996 the ferries would probably be stupid cheap compared to todays prices
okay so we could say that georgia and ren live on different islands
hold on a minute
so his aunty's message tells us that ren lives in a city and his aunty will be picking him up and going south
so that gives us some narrowed down options
PARDON ME THE ACTUAL FUCK
okay so i googled "what places were considered cities in nz 1996"
and thats fine and dandy theres a wikipedia page that i'll look at
in the bar of 'others search for:' there was one entitled "what happened in nz 1996"
i open it
and scream in horror as the name winston peters appears
direct copy paste from the wikipedia result:
Although predicted by many to ally with Labour, on 10 December 1996 New Zealand First leader Winston Peters chose to form a coalition with National, thus preserving Prime Minister Jim Bolger's administration. The 1996 election effectively showcased the difference made by the new electoral system.
winston peters is one of the deputy prime ministers THIS YEAR
Government
Legislature term: 53rd New Zealand Parliament until 8 September, then 54th New Zealand Parliament from 5 December.
The Sixth Labour Government, elected in 2017 and 2020, then the Sixth National Government elected in 2023.
Speaker of the House – Adrian Rurawhe until 5 December, then Gerry Brownlee
Prime Minister – Jacinda Ardern until 25 January, then Chris Hipkins until 27 November, then Christopher Luxon
Deputy Prime Minister – Grant Robertson until 25 January, then Carmel Sepuloni until 27 November, then Winston Peters
Leader of the House – Chris Hipkins until 25 January, then Grant Robertson until 27 November, then Chris Bishop
Minister of Finance – Grant Robertson until 27 November, then Nicola Willis
Minister of Foreign Affairs – Nanaia Mahuta until 11 November, then Grant Robertson until 27 November, then Winston Peters
christ almighty when is he going to die in a hole i hope its soon <3
oooh shit ren might have been old enough to vote in that election
and idk if he'd vote by himself but i feel like georgia would have encouraged it
okay back to the list of cities. we have:
auckland (still do not agree he's from auckland)
christchurch
wellington
hamilton
tauranga
okay cool so technically there might be others but im sorry palmerston north is not a city
making myself reread the book gave me a new perspective bc i was gonna say he's from like levin or somewhere
obscure like that
te puke perhaps
but no! he's from a city which means i can't take the angle of "ren didnt think places looked like this in 1996. not even wellington." but thats okay!
i'm leaning towards hamilton myself
just obscure enough
but still a city
pretty far up in the north island
oooh i kinda wanna write georgia as living in wellington she would thrive in wellington i think
@antisocialgaycat tagging u as always <333
