(Archive) Animated short film of the day: Down to the bone (Hasta los huesos, 2002)

Originally posted: January 2nd, 2023 Yesterday I mentioned a few important figures, but one of them might elude you: René Castillo. Taking a look at it's small but remarkable filmography may clue you in why he was part of the project, for he is a master of the craft of Stop Motion. More than that, however, his body of work is so overtly Mexican it's nigh impossible to think it was done elsewhere. And really, what's more Mexican than Día de Muertos?

The visuals here are quite eclectic to say the least. Uneven on it's shapes, vibrant in color with some chiaroscuro, a little raunchy in humor (through mostly through visual innuendo) and generally speaking having slight sense of irreverence, it's representation of the afterlife is a lot more influential than you would be lead to believe. Coco (2016) is an obvious one, but this short came out before Corpse Bride (2005) started principal photography, Tim Burton admitting having taken cues from here. It's not hard to see why either: it captures the festivity and energy of Mexican celebrations in ways Disney never dared to.

And yet, the story doesn't shy away from the weight of mortality being the center of the celebration, the sobering epiphany that comes with the holiday that some day we're gonna leave someone behind. In contrast with the black comedy reigning Castillo's first short film Sin Sostén (Without a Bra, 1998), amongst the humor of this one lies a simple but striking character arc, a man coming to grips with the fact he's no longer among the living and has to say goodbye to them as much as they are to him.

Between the music by Café Tacvba, the singing of Eugenia León and all the references to the Mexican Revolution, a lot of singificant figures and imagery from the country may inevitably fly over your head. Regardless, those aspects that are universal within manage to make it a strong contender for the best Día de Muertos animation piece ever made.

El fin de semana se llevaron a cabo los Juegos Estatales Conade 2023 en la disciplina de triatlón, donde surgieron los ganadores desde la categoría Infantil Mayor, Juvenil Menor, Juvenil Mayor y Juvenil Superior, que buscarán su clasificación al nacional en el Macro Regional se llevará a cabo en Durango el 18 y 19 de marzo.

En la modalidad de Acuatlón de la categoría Infantil Mayor (2008-2010), los dos primeros lugares fueron para María Cristina Soto López y Ximena Bejarano Granillo, mientras que en la rama varonil, los ganadores fueron Luis Daniel Salas Rodríguez, Miguel Andrés Vargas Santana y Adrián Emanuel Bejarano Granillo.

Dentro de la modalidad de Triatlón por eliminación en la categoría Juvenil Superior (2000-2003), el primer sitio fue para Andrea Chávez Rodríguez, con un tiempo de 19:19.80 minutos, mientras que en la rama varonil, Rene Howlet Ramos, con 16:16.80 minutos.

Asimismo, en la misma categoría, en Triatlón Super Sprint, el pódium fue para David Serna (18:17.92min), Blass Rodríguez (22:40.07) y Noé Vázquez (24:17.10).

En Triatlón por eliminación, de la categoría Juvenil Mayor, los dos primeros lugares son para Obed Rivas y Victor Salazar.

"Where did you get the flowers from?"

Renee scarcely glances up from the tender branches clasped between her fingers. Cato is watching intently, hands resting on the butt of the rifle he's wearing slung over one shoulder. It takes him a moment to realize what she's doing -- she's weaving, braiding flexible stems into one another as a chain grows inch by inch between her hands. Her brow is furrowed in a mask of concentration, only glancing away from her work to pluck another flower out of the bunch at her side.

It's a nice day out, all things considered. The sun is hot, but not yet blistering, and an unseasonably strong breeze stirs the pennants hanging from the wall surrounding the city of Phoenix. Renee is sitting in the shade, skirts pulled up out of the dirt. Seemingly alone, but it's not terribly dangerous this close to the city and Cato is well aware of Renee's ability to handle herself.

It takes her a moment to answer. "Down by the river."

"That's quite a walk to take by yourself," Cato says, head tipped to the side.

Renee's expression briefly sours. She glances up, golden eyes catching the light and fingers pausing ever so slightly before she returns her attention to the string of flowers growing between her fingers. He recognizes the flowers -- desert willow. Pretty to look at, but not much else. It grows in clusters along the banks of the river west from the city. In the spring, the scent of them clogs the air, thick and sickly. It's beyond him why Renee would choose these to spend her time with when the wild poppies are both lovelier and better smelling.

"Do not patronize me, Cato," Renee says. "You may be a legionary, but you are not my keeper. Nor are you responsible for what happens to me."

"I wasn't." Cato frowns.

"You were," Renee says. Though her voice is stern, she doesn't snap. Sighing, her hands drop to her lap and she looks up at Cato, squinting. She gestures to her side. "Sit. I can't work with you looming over me like that."

Cato blinks. He starts, then halts, one foot poised to move. Renee has never invited him to do anything with her. She's reluctant to spend time with him at all, but he's persistent, and she's given up telling him to go away. After a hesitation that stretches a beat too long, Cato unslings his rifle from his shoulder and turns to sit. Carefully, he props the gun up against the wall, assuring the safety is on as he folds his hands in his lap.

Shifting, Renee turns to pile a handful of green shoots into his lap. "Besides," she continues, ignoring Cato's surprise. "I wasn't by myself. Atreus came with me."

Humming, Cato lifts one of the willow blossoms and rolls it between the pads of his fingers. "A good soldier to have by your side."

"I think perhaps he just didn't want to go on patrol."

"It seems likely."

For a beat, Renee's solemn mask slips and she smiles at the mention of her son. As small as it is, the expression transforms her face. She's nearly twice Cato's age, but she's still young -- she would have been a teenager when the Legion came to take her from her home. Jack's age, maybe, or even younger. The thought sends a pang through Cato's chest and he glances at his hands, where he's crushed a blossom between callused fingers.

Quickly, as if Renee can sense what Cato is thinking, her expression shutters. Once again, it's replaced by a mask of calm indifference. Pursing her lips, she gestures at the flowers in his lap. "Make yourself useful. Weave these."

Cato lifts his eyebrows. "I don't know how," he admits, pulling the petals of one flower between his thumb and forefinger.

Rolling her eyes, Renee shifts closer, her arms angled such that he can see her hands. "Watch," she commands. Slowly, she begins to loop the stems around and through each other, feeding them into a long chain until the length of it bristles with blossoms. Studiously, Cato begins to copy her.

"Why," he asks as his chain of flowers grows lopsided beside Renee's, "Are we braiding flowers?"

"Why not?" Renee says.

"It seems pointless," Cato says. There's no derision in his voice, just simple curiosity.

Renee huffs a short laugh. "Haven't you ever done anything relaxing?"

"No," Cato says automatically. Then he tilts his head. "I like to write."

"What do you write?"

"Nothing really," he muses. "My day. The things I saw. My thoughts."

Humming, Renee lets her hands still. The flowers in her lap are gone, all woven and braided into each other in a long chain that trails in the dust. Reaching out, she plucks the uneven end of Cato's flowers and begins to braid them into hers. "This isn't so different," she says. "Consider that these are my thoughts. My prayers."

"You pray?" Cato asks, surprised. "You seem far too... pragmatic for that."

A wry smile touches Renee's lips. She shrugs, russet hair jostling with the motion. "For Atreus. Orion. My Venus," she says. With each name, Renee tucks loose ends into the woven mass until the braid forms a cohesive whole, then folds her palms in her lap.

Cato rubs his cheek. The chain is long, and though deftly woven, it's fragile. The flowers have already started to wilt, petals dusting the ground at their feet. "Seems a shame for all that to go to waste," he murmurs.

"No more a waste to leave it here than it would be had the flowers remained on their branches." Standing, Renee sets the coiled braid of flowers on the bench, then gathers her skirts in one hand. She regards Cato with a shrewd eye, but not unkindly. "I believe we both have work to attend to, Asterion. Goodbye."

With a curt nod, Renee turns to head up the track towards Phoenix, one hand lifted to shade her eyes against the sun. Cato watches until she disappears over the rise, then looks at the mass of petals between his hands.
