Supercars are supposed to miss the forest for the trees. These ragged-edge cars focus so intently on high-speed performance and high-cost trimmings that they’re often tough to truly utilize on a daily basis, relegating them to weekend warriors at best. But not the 2020 Acura NSX. This Japanese scalpel is more than ready to rumble on a backroad, but it carries a softness that gives the car more than enough pliancy to make for a quality grocery-getter, albeit one that’s a bit over equipped for the task.

Before I even get behind the wheel of the 2020 Acura NSX, I’m hit with that familiar kind of supercar weird-for-the-sake-of-being-weird-ness. On approach, the thin door handles pop out to greet me, which is a fun parlor trick. Thankfully, the doors open in the normal direction, as the NSX has absolutely no problem turning heads without bringing atypical hinges and butterfly doors into the equation.

With interesting angles in every direction, from flying buttresses out back to the aggressive front bumper, the NSX is like most other supercars in that it’s damn near impossible to blend in anywhere. Even beyond the show-off styling, my tester’s $6,000 Valencia Red Pearl paint job isn’t about to let that happen.

First impressions come quickly after sliding past the NSX’s door. Despite the body’s relative position to terra firma, the seating position is a little higher than I expect, giving me a greater feeling of normalcy than I encounter in, say, a McLaren or a Lamborghini. Visibility is quite good in most directions, with loads of forward sight (thanks in part to way-thin A-pillars) and superb blind-spot coverage from the mirrors that sprout from the body like antennae. The view out back is fine, considering there’s an engine a few inches behind me. Be mindful of the sun’s position, though: Too many direct rays from ol’ Sol and the front windshield begins to resemble a cheese grater thanks to serious reflections of the massive speaker grille below. It can be really annoying, especially in spirited driving or slow-speed neighborhoods where children and squirrels are likely to be in the street.

Overall, the NSX’s interior quality feels worth the $150,000+ cost of admission. Soft leather covers most of the dashboard, door panels, center tunnel and steering wheel, and what isn’t made from the smooth stuff is bedecked in carbon fiber (a $2,500 option) and satin aluminum. The small bit of piano black trim on the transmission controls, which should be very familiar to most recent Honda or Acura owners, is the only part of the interior that feels a little low-rent, and only then it’s because of its propensity to accumulate finger grime. The cup holders are small and only attach to a slot on the center console, but you can tuck them into the diminutive glove compartment when not in use. Other storage comes by way of wallet-sized slots in the door panels, a key- (and mask-) sized slot in the center console and a small hinged cubby against the rear firewall that houses the USB port. It’s tight, like many supercars, but there’s still a decent amount of room for my 6-foot frame to get comfortable.

Most mid-engined supercars throw owners a storage bone by way of front and rear trunks. But not the NSX — electric motors and other hardware live under the hood, so the only cargo storage is located aft of the engine. Not only is the trunk small, its proximity to the twin-turbo V6 means whatever goes back there has to be heat-tolerant. Put your bags of ice in the passenger-side footwell.

All of those silly concerns melt away from the second I push the start button. Just behind my head, the 3.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 growls itself awake before quickly settling into a quieter idle, something neighbors are bound to appreciate. A push of the Drive button puts the nine-speed dual-clutch transmission to work, which provides just a smidgeon of slip as first gear engages.

In the default Sport mode, the NSX proves to me that it can absolutely function as a daily driver. Despite lacking air or McLaren’s complicated hydraulics, the NSX’s static suspension is surprisingly comfortable, soaking up a wide variety of bumps and humps without unsettling the car or its occupants. The chassis’ inherent stiffness remains obvious, but the ride is far smoother than I went in expecting.

Gear shifts are unobtrusive, and in low-rev situations, the V6 (which produces 500 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque on its own) is content to putter along quietly — if it’s even running at all. In Quiet mode, the NSX will use its small battery to operate like any other hybrid, silently hustling along under electric power alone — Sport offers electric-only operation, too, but in more limited quantities. The V6 cuts in and out with little, if any jostling in the cabin. It’s Prius smooth, in a good way.

Twist the mode knob to Sport Plus, and the NSX emits some sort of magic substance that causes me to forget about literally anything that isn’t the car or the road directly ahead of it. I feel the frenetic energy start to rise as the engine dramatically increases its volume at all times, even though it’s a little meh on the tonal front at lower revs. The V6 calls on the help of three electric motors — two up front, one out back — to generate a net 573 hp and 476 lb-ft. As you’d expect, the electric motors absolutely assault me with torque at a moment’s notice, and it’s really evident in tight corners, where the front axle helps pull me through as Continental SportContact performance tires grip the pavement. It’s easy to approach a corner with more speed than expected, but thankfully, it’s also easy to shuffle out the other side. Between those points, optional carbon-ceramic rotors ($10,600!) will scrub speed with both excellent modulation and impressive haste, over and over again. It’s impossible not to have fun in the 2020 NSX.

My only real gripe here is that I wish I could mix and match the modes. I get it, Acura put these modes together to make sure the car exemplifies whatever it’s after, but if I really wanted to daily drive this car, I’d want the engine constantly in Sport Plus with the suspension in Quiet. Why the hell can’t I have that?

One thing that Acura has in common with every other supercar manufacturer is its middling-at-best infotainment system. Ripped straight from, oh, every single Honda Civic on the dealership lot, the NSX’s 7-inch head unit packs suction-cupped-Garmin-era graphics, just-OK response time and limited functionality. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are on offer, which means it’s pretty easy to ignore the standard setup altogether. The motif changes from red to blue depending on vehicle mode, but I kind of wish Acura could have put its own unique spin on this — or at least upgraded the 2020 NSX to the most recent (and prettier) version found on the Odyssey and other large adult Hondas. The gauge cluster is entirely digital, too, and while it’s weird that it’s tilted away from my eyes, it provides me with all the data I could possibly ask for. It’s easy to mess around with, too, thanks to super-simple scrollers on the steering wheel.

As for safety systems, you get… parking sensors. And non-adaptive cruise control. Want anything else? Buy a TLX.

With a starting price of $159,495 after destination, the 2020 Acura NSX is almost competing with two separate classes of high-performance vehicle. On the one side, you have the hardcore non-supercars like the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Mercedes-AMG GT R or, if you don’t need a six-figure window sticker, the mid-engined Chevrolet Corvette, all of which are excellent cars, but all of which lack the “What was that?” emotional appeal of proper supercars. Speaking of which, the NSX is positioned against some big names here, too, like the Audi R8 and, if you want to drop another $30k, the McLaren 570S. Those cars are more along the lines of the NSX, but they’re also a fair bit sharper than the Acura, too.

When a car is engineered with performance at the top of the masthead, comfort has to be put back into it. Sometimes it requires complex components, other times it just doesn’t happen very well. But the 2020 Acura NSX does an excellent job blending daily usability and performance in a way that other supercars don’t. Does it leave a little bit of skidpad rating on the table? Sure. But I’ll be damned if you can find a more entertaining way to commute in comfort.

When I was about thirteen I had an issue with cutting, I would talk to my guidance counselor (which is not an option now because I did home schooling and now am done with school until college next fall) and when she realized that I may have some more serious issues, she called my mom. My mom always brushed it off. She talked to me a total of one time, only when I went to my older cousin and my cousin forced my mother to talk to me. Basically, my mom got mad because I said I didnt feel comfortable talking to her and she refused to send me to a counselor, then she said she would send me to a counselor (at that time I had insurance) but she never actually ended up doing anything. So I went back to doing what I always do, pretending to be fine, and for the most part I controlled it. I stopped cutting until about seven months ago, which was also when all my other issues started popping up. I havent cut myself in a few months now, but I still have the urge to which is not okay. Depression and other mental health issues run in my family, and I keep thinking of one particular relative who got so bad that she took her own life. About a year ago my husband and I sold a car. We went through the usual channels with dealing with the plates, calling the insurance company and so on. Well today we got our yearly insurance cards in the mail and didn't recognize one of the cars they had given us a card for so I went over the statement. We never really noticed how much we should be paying in insurance for our cars and only get our statement once a year with these cars. Three weeks ago my 2005 Cadillac STS was involved in a parking lot flood where the water rose and filled the floors of my car by about 4 inches. From the time I dropped it off at the dealer it has been all negative. Right away the dealer was negative and telling me it's the end of the world with my car, everything is ruined and it will probably be a total loss. He got the adjuster for my insurance company out there and it looks like it will be put in to the total loss category. No i am just asking the insurance company to forget everything and drop the claim because the damage is not that extreme and i dont want to lose my car. I am told at this point it is too late. Is that true? My neighbors are floored by this, i have been driving it around for a few weeks just fine and the car still looks new With only 62000 miles on it. I can't help from thinking that something suspicious is going on here. Do they stand to make a nice profit by totalling my vehicle and then replacing one module for a 1000 or so and having a perfect car with all systems working? Also the lady from the claims office said the car had to be 80% damaged for it to be a total loss. I asked her if this was based on speculative problems that they think may occur in the future because of the water, or based on actual damage now? She said it had to be actual damage now but couldn't give me any details from the adjuster yet. Can I demand that the adjuster list everything that he thinks has been damaged to my car (which I am convinced he will have to be creative to do so)? The car as i said drives wonderful, I checked the fluids on my own (fine), and the car looks new. Do I have any recourse here? I just want the car fixed for the one problem, i dont want to lose the car, and at this point I don't even care about having insurance fix the one problem, but again I am told it is too late to go backwards and drop this entire issue. I almost have an inclination to report this because it looks so shady. No reasonable person would look at, and drive this car and consider it a total loss. While I am employed, I work at home for a company in another state, and the dental insurance options through my company were not viable. So, of course, I relied on the internet to research my options, and I looked, specifically, for dental insurance Lo and Behold, the stuff that came up, was for Dental Discount Plans. Upon first glance, it seemed like this could actually have been a better deal then anything offered through my firm. The conversation on the websites touted these plans, often with premiums of $7 to $20 per month, to be better than conventional dental insurance in every imaginable way. No issues in applying, no maximums, no deductibles, and no waiting. So, I am sitting here, reading how in EVERY possible way this is better than insurance, and it strikes me. If something seems to good to be true, maybe it is. If these were so much better than conventional insurance, why did my firm have so much trouble finding affordable insurance; they should have simply joined one of these discount programs. Well, the site even attached me to an independent article which BASHED the conventional insurance...Then it struck me...If I was a dentist, would I be happy joining these discount plans and basically getting 50% to 75% less for my services. Yeah Yeah, I am getting my payment up front and not waiting for the insurance to pay me (again, playing the role of the dentist), but is that worth the tremendously discounted amount (does not make sense when you compare the time value of money). So, I realized that if I were a dentist, I would not want anything to do with these plans...Or would I? Does being a part of these discount programs really bring in enough clients to justify that deep a cut in the fee schedule. Then I started to think...Is it possible that there is something up with these deeply discounted fee schedules I keep seeing on these sites? Are the fees just being jacked up and then discounted back down to the point where I might as well not be a member of the Discount Program, and just a regular walk in? Can I go to a dentist and ask them for the fee schedule, and then after the fact, compare it to the discount program to see that I am really getting a discount, and it is not some number playing farce. I would want to know as a dentist whether these discount programs are worth anything. I need some kind of coverage, and for the few self insurance programs I see, the monthly premiums are incredibly high, and yes, when compared to the discount programs, it seems like NO ONE would EVER join these insurance programs since they are more limited and more expensive...Yet....They are still in the insurance business. Rear Ended - Can I demand insurance?

I was in an accident last month in my brand new Volvo (not even a month old!). I was rear-ended, while I was at a stop sign. Damage is to the rear bumper, pretty bad, looks horrible...especially for a new car! No one was hurt, just shaken! We did not immediately file a police report. We exchanged information, and the the person who hit me told me that they would pay for my repairs out of pocket, and that they didn't want to get the police or insurance involved. We conversed on the phone for a few days, and they seemed like everything was going great, and I was supposed to meet them at their friends auto body shop for the repairs...long story short...they never showed. Bad part now is, I never got their insurance information, just license plate, DL, addresses(basically everything BUT insurance). That same day, I went to the police station and filed a delayed police report. Later that week, I went and got 3 different estimates, and the damage averages out to about $900. I contacted a friend of mine, who is a police officer, and they stated that I can issue a summons to the person who hit me for careless driving, and I will have to go to court. This is basically to show them that I'm not messing around. All I want is my BRAND NEW car fixed!!! I'm NOT going through my insurance because my deductible is $1,000, and the damage is less...not only that...it wasn't my fault! My insurance company advised me to have person who hit me's insurance take care of everything, at no cost to me. Here's what I need to find out...Can I send the person a demand letter, basically stating that I want them to have their insurance take care of everything? I have tried to call them, and they send me to voice mail, so reasoning is not an option any more. I don't really know how to go about this?! I want to try this on my own, and not get an attorney involved. I just want to tell them that if they fix my car, I will drop summons and further proceedings (like small-claims court, which I WILL sue for additional $$ for dealing with all this). Car Insurance Question - will I have to pay if I cancel?

I am going to cancel my car insurance because I have not been driving my car - at all. It needs some work so it's been sitting at my house for a few months now. I originally had State Farm and was paying $232 for a Hyndai Tiburon, had a traffic accident for, Improper Lane Change, the other person did not file a claim, had to spend $500 to get my car fixed and $89 on municipal court fees. I was told that the incident, since I paid it in full and did not receive probation would not be held on my license, however it did make my insurance go up to $302, because of the deduct able, very understandable. This was in Ga. I moved to Ok. I looked at new insurance here and found one with Mercury Auto Insurance through a 3rd party company and received a quote for full coverage at $232 a month, so back down to normal price. They ran my license and everything, everything was fine, I even told them about the accident and they said that it would not change rates. Well, it did. I got my first statement and my bill was $314! I called up to the 3rd party company and they said that the insurance company charged my Improper Lane Change, as an Erratic Improper Lane Change, and as such it was classified as a traffic accident on my license and that's what made it go up. She said she would call me back, but she never did and I have been working so much, I haven't had a chance to call back. So here is what I need to know, and please no stupid insurance companies trying to solicit. 1. Who do I call in Ga. and have them dismiss those charges on my license and if they can't, how do I go about filing a lawsuit for illegal allegations after trial? 2. Celebrity Drive: Daniel Wu of AMC’s ‘Into the Badlands’

Daniel Wu loves cars. Landing in big-budget movies in Hong Kong helped get the starring role in AMC’s martial arts action series “Into the Badlands.” That has allowed him to buy his desired cars on two continents.

Wu still has a few cars in Hong Kong, where he still keeps a residence. “I have a lot of cars,” he says. In California, Wu’s daily driver is a 2014 Tesla Model S. He had a Toyota Prius, and the Tesla was his chance to try the technology of a purely electric car, he says.

“I’m just interested in car technology in general, so when they went fully electric, I thought Tesla was the game changer in terms of build quality, the mileage you can get on one charge,” Wu says. “The other cars, like the Leaf was only 80 miles (of range) on it. It was not really practical to me. So I thought Tesla was the luxury end of it and having long range of up to 300 miles on one charge.”

Wu rates the Tesla an 8.5 out of 10. “It handles great. The power’s amazing, the torque is amazing, all those things about the electric car. A couple things I would knock it off for are — if it’s supposed to be a luxury car it should be a little more luxurious on the inside,” he says. “The leather doesn’t feel as luxurious. They can up their game on that, especially for the price point.”

The Tesla is the largest sedan Wu has ever owned. “It’s really big, really wide, it’s like a 7 Series BMW size,” he says. “It doesn’t look that way at first, but when you drive it, it feels really wide.”

2017 Ford Focus RS

Wu recently bought the Ford Focus RS. “The Ford is more a toy because it’s a little race car. That’s more for satisfying a different side of me,” Wu says. “It’s really set up to be a little race car.”

But Wu says it can be a daily driver as well. “It’s docile when you want it to be, but then it has a Sport mode, a Track mode and a Drift Mode, so when you want to get aggressive, you can get into other things,” he says. “The build quality is great because it’s made in Germany, so the quality is there.”

Wu could’ve chosen a similar ride from one of Ford’s competitors. “But I like it because it’s a sleeper car. It doesn’t really look like a racer car like a Mitsibishi Evo X or a Subaru WRX-STI, but it has the power of both cars. They look like racer boy cars, but this car looks like a regular Ford Focus. It has a body kit on it, but it’s very subtle. I wanted a car that was fast like those other ones, but didn’t look like a racer boy car.”

The Ford is Wu’s first American car besides the Tesla. “I’ve only had German cars and maybe a Japanese car here and there in my life,” he says. “It had glowing reviews from “Top Gear” to “Grand Tour” to Motor Trend, who reviewed it gloriously, and it’s the type of car the European market has had for a long time, but the American market never had.”

He says it reminds him of the Mustang’s presence in Europe. “Europeans are buying up Mustangs like crazy because they’d never had access to the Mustang before,” Wu says. “They always had Ford Focus RS’s in Europe, but they never had them in the United States, so the opportunity to have a little nice car that you can take out on the winding roads that was a Ford was interesting to me.”

Wu likes all the bells and whistles on the Focus RS for the near-$40,000 price. “It’s amazing. The torque vectoring differential, AWD, the turbo, the 350 HP, the 350 lb-ft of torque, the Recaro seats, all that stuff is a great value for money,” he says.

What’s lacking for Wu is that it’s interior can be improved on. “It’s fine for what it is, but it’s not a luxurious sports car, if that’s what you’re looking for. But for the price point, you get what you pay for. So what I’m going to use it for is — take it to the track, thrash it around. It’s cheap enough that I don’t have to worry about it too much. If I got a nicer sports car, like a German one, I’d be worried about pushing it on the track,” he says, laughing, referring to his home track of Sonoma Raceway. “It’s the closet one to me in the Bay . I’m probably going to autocross it as well.”

1988 Porsche 911

Rating: 9

The Porsche 911 was his dad’s and he drives it once a week. His dad bought it as a retirement present for himself, but a few years ago he wanted to get rid of it because at 87, he didn’t drive it anymore.

“I said, ‘Dad, you’ve had it for 25 years, don’t get rid of it.’ So I bought it. I bought him a BMW 3 Series and a traded it for him. We just stopped him from driving this year. I love it. It’s a classic car that you can drive on a daily basis because it starts every time. In Hong Kong I have a 1966 Jaguar E Type and that thing you never know if it’s going to start,” Wu says, laughing.

Wu points out the Porsche has no power steering, no airbags, no ABS. “It’s an old school race car. It only has 70,000 miles on it and it’s almost 30 years old now. It was the final year before they switched to the 911s that have all the plastic bumpers and body.”

2014 Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover is the family car. “My wife rides horses, so we need an SUV to go to the farm and dirt roads and haul the horse trailer,” he says. “We needed one that was practical, but I also wanted one that handled well and drove really well, and it really does drive like a car.”

Wu notes there’s been a lot of improvement from the older Range Rover Sport. “I got it the first year this new body style came out and because the platform is based off the Range Rover and not the Discovery, it’s got a better chassis, it handles really well, it’s supercharged, it has tons of power and it’s big enough and the luxurious side of it is great,” he says. “The leather, the build quality on it is amazing.”

Car he learned to drive in

Wu grew up in Northern California, where he learned to drive his sister’s manual 1986 VW Golf, first going to a nearby BART station. “There’s these big parking lots in the suburbs where people park and they’d take (rapid transit) into the city, so my dad took me there to learn and I learned stick first,” he says.

Wu got more time with his first car, a 1984 BMW 318i. “I got it when I was 15 and a half, before I was 16 when I had my permit. My parents wanted me to get a Volvo 240 because it was safe and I convinced them to get the BMW because it was cheaper second-hand than the Volvo. I went to a school that was 15 miles away from home, so my parents were tired of driving me to school every morning,” he says, laughing. “Once I was able to drive, they were like, ‘Yeah, go drive yourself to school.’”

Three months after he got his license, Wu crashed the BMW. “It was wet, I was coming home from school, I made a turn on a slick road and I slipped into a ditch,” he recalls. “The rear tire went into a ditch and it pulled it into the wall that was right next to it and slammed the back corner.”

He was able to fix and kept it until halfway through college. Wu built furniture for people while a student at the University of Oregon and needed a pickup truck. “I got a Toyota pickup so I could haul the furniture that I was building,” he says. “I was snowboarding a lot, so it was perfect for that. They used to call them Tacoma SR5, but when I had it, I think it was a 1991, it was just a Toyota pickup truck 4×4.”

Being in Oregon at the time there was loads of trails he took the truck to. “I beat the crap out of it. I went off-roading in it. I just thrashed it, because I could,” he says, with a laugh.

Favorite road trip

In the summer of 2002, Wu rented a convertible with a best friend from high school to drive Route 66. “Our rule was the entire time we could not put the top up, we had to keep it down unless it rained. So we came back really dark from that. Driving through Arizona and New Mexico with the top down, it was pretty brutal. “

It had always been a dream of his to do this road trip. “It’s like the American dream, Route 66 is such a classic route. We stayed in really dumpy crappy motels the whole way,” Wu says. “It was something we had been talking about since high school that we wanted to do and we didn’t do it in college.”

Wu was in Hong Kong and had just finished a movie, while his friend had 10 days off in between jobs, so they took the whole time they had together to drive Route 66. They started the road trip in Oakland and went as far as Colorado and then turned back going through the Southwest, which included Vegas, New Mexico, Arizona and Los Angeles.

He wanted to do it the way many great road trips are done. “We didn’t even really plan it out, we just rented the car and started driving,” he says.

The road trips was eye-opening for Wu. “It was interesting that two Chinese guys driving through southern America, it was kind of scary at some point because you’re either Latino or you’re white down there and there’s no other races,” he laughs. “I’d grown up all my life in California and I’ve only been really on the West coast and East coast and I’ve never really been to the middle of the country. Like driving through some parts of Colorado is also weird, we’d go through towns and people would be looking at us.”

For Wu, growing up in a diverse community like the Bay Area, even going to college was his first experience on what it was like in the rest of the country. “When I first went to Oregon, the first time I saw a truck with a gun rack with a gun in it, I was like, ‘What? This is real? People actually drive around with guns?’” he says with a laugh.

AMC’s “Badlands” and Warner Bros.’ “GeoStorm” Oct. 20

Wu stars in AMC’s martial arts drama “Badlands” which is available on Netflix, and returns on AMC Sundays at 10 p.m. in 2018 for an expanded Season 3, with 16 episodes.

“The highlight of the show is the incredible action that we do, it’s Hong Kong-style martial arts on American television and the biggest comments are that people are blown away by the action. They’ve never seen this kind of action on TV before,” Wu says.

Wu does 90 percent of his own stunts on the show. “I do all the fighting, I’m not allowed to do the dangerous stuff like jumping off buildings. The network doesn’t allow that, but I do all the fighting,” he says.

The show was shot the first season in New Orleans, but by Season 2, they moved it to Ireland. “We were very limited in New Orleans because everywhere you look is just swamp, swamp and more swamp, and this is a show that takes place 200 something years in the future in a post apocalyptic derelict, rundown America. When we went to Ireland, we were able to make the show much more epic, much more cinematic. So it looks like a very big movie, but it’s actually a TV show. It’s a pretty fun show. It’s really fun, it’s bloody and gory,” he says, laughing.

Wu is stars in the Warner Bros. suspense thriller “Geostorm” in theaters today. He’s also in the new “Tomb Raider” movie out March 2018.
