Double motivation for Samoa in World Cup qualifier after PM earbashing
Tumblr media
WELLINGTON, June 28 (Reuters) - Samoa's rugby team have a double motivation heading into their Rugby World Cup qualifier against Germany on Saturday, with the country's Prime Minister berating them for a run of defeats and telling them to quit if they lose.
Samoa, who often enthral the World Cup with their high-octane physical play, have been thrust into the ignominy of the playoff, with the first leg at Apia Park on Saturday (kickoff 0215 GMT), after they failed to finish in the top-two places in the Pacific Nations Cup over 2016-17.
Fiji and Tonga automatically qualified from Oceania for next year's tournament in Japan.
After losing again to Fiji and Tonga earlier this month, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said he was tired of the team's losing run. Their last win was a 25-23 victory over Canada in late 2016.
"I said, if you don't win this game then you all have to resign from the team," the Samoa Observer reported Malielegaoi, who is also the Samoa Rugby Union Chairman, as telling his Parliament earlier this week after he had visited the team.
"I told them that it would be better to let the kids playing in the Super 9 to represent the Manu Samoa if they can't handle it.
"You played 10 games and you lost in all of those 10 games, so what does that tell me, you have no guts."
Samoa captain Chris Vui said the criticism, not just from the Prime Minister but ordinary fans in the tiny Pacific nation, had hit home and would galvanise his side for the two-legged playoff, with the second leg in Germany on July 14.
"We want to keep going and to keep fighting until the end," Vui told the newspaper earlier this week.
"There is a future for this team. It may not be now but Samoan rugby is a world class international team.
"We take the feedback and ... move on."
Samoa struggled in their clashes against their fellow Pacific nations earlier this month but the mostly professional side should still prove too strong for the Germans, who beat Portugal 16-13 in Heidelberg two weeks ago to make the playoff.
Pablo Lemione's team, however, only got that far after Romania, Spain and Belgium were all docked points for fielding ineligible players repeatedly during qualifying.
Romania had initially clinched the second European qualifying spot, behind the already qualified Georgia, but after an independent review discovered the ineligible players, Russia was promoted instead.
Germany won just two of their eight qualifying matches over the course of the two years of the Rugby Europe Championship and conceded more than 50 points five times.
The winner of the playoff enters Pool A at the World Cup with the hosts, Ireland, Scotland and Russia.
The loser enters the four-team repechage tournament, which will be held in France in November, for the final spot in the World Cup.

Coronavirus Knocked Out Boxing | The gloomy panorama …
Like all highly competitive sports, national and international boxing also stopped running. Fights scheduled for April have been postponed or directly canceled. And the billboards slated for May hold in an increasingly weak potential mode. It will cost to carry out the activity normally in the first semester of the year. And what may happen in the second, for now is locked between two thick question marks.
At the local level, it was a very strong blow was the cancellation of the Pre-Olympic tournament that was to take place this week at the Cenard. All the qualifying competitions have been derived to the repechage for now scheduled in Paris between May 13 and 20, but very improbable.
As for professionalism, local television evenings broadcast by TyC Sports and Direct TV Sports have been dropped from the schedule, with no tentative return date. Both the Argentine Box Federation and the most important promoters (Osvaldo Rivero, Mario Margossian and Mario Arano) know that the national government is expecting a flare-up of the coronavirus starting in the second half of April, so it is complex for it to rise on April 31. March the ban on sporting events. There is also no will of the businessmen, at best, to replace the festivals, even if it is behind closed doors.
The promoter HDP (Hueso de Perro) of José Jaita and José Reinoso, who organized monthly evenings in the danceable Pinar de Rocha de Ramos Mejía with televising through your You Tube channel, also stopped its activities. The show scheduled for March 14 was canceled and there are no announcements for April, as well as Chino Promotions, the company of the former world champion Marcos Maidana, whose reappearance on April 18 in Tecnópolis in an exhibition before kick boxing fighter Jorge Cali was canceled no possible date of specification.
The two Argentine boxers who were going to fight for world titles will have to wait for a new agenda. Agustín Gauto will not fight on April 3 in Panama against the Puerto Rican René Santiago García by the interim mini-fly of the Organization and neither will Brian Castaño who on the 25th of that month in Indio (California) was preparing to face the Brazilian left-hander Patrick Teixeira for the WBO superwelter crown under the organization of Golden Boy Promotions, the firm led by former world and Olympic champion Oscar de la Hoya. Both lawsuits await a new date.
At the international level, the Nevada State Athletic Commission will decide this week whether to lift or close the Las Vegas boxing shows that were suspended until tomorrow. Everything seems to indicate that the restriction will continue in force as well as in California and New York, which maintain the ban until the end of March.
On May 2, the unifying fight between the Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and the English Billy Joe Saunders is scheduled in Las Vegas by the super middle crowns of the Association and the Organization. If that date is not available, the English promoter Eddie Hearn, whose company Matchroom manages the campaign of both, evaluates transferring the confrontation to Qatar or the United Arab Emirates. Both countries could host some of the big fights that, due to the coronavirus surge, did not take place in the US or Europe.
Hearn still holds for London's June 20 match between Anthony Joshua and Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev for the Association, Organization and Federation Heavyweight Championship and the third edition of the duel between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder for the Council version is scheduled for July 18 at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. But the two fights are hanging by a thread. “We are in the hands of governments and scientists, the pandemic will delay everything,” said Frank Warren, Fury's manager.
If these two shocks were postponed and in parallel the threat of a worsening of the coronavirus declined, the second half of 2020 will be populated by exciting combats. There is already a contract signed on September 12 for “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin to meet again in Dallas (Texas). The Kazakh is scheduled for June 6 at the Forum in Inglewood (California) against the Polish challenger Kamil Szeremeta for the Federation medium title. But if the fight couldn't take place on that date, her handler, Tom Loeffler, would let her through to go straight against Alvarez. As long as the coronavirus doesn't lay a knockout hand.

Germany
Mike Ford says his current charges “will run through a brick wall for you”
Mike Ford says his Germany side “will die for the opportunity” to face defending champions New Zealand in next year’s Rugby World Cup.
The 52-year-old has gone from coaching some of the sport’s biggest names at Leicester, Bath and Toulon to taking charge of cable-car drivers and bouncers as part-timers Germany aim for their first appearance at a World Cup.
Ford was announced as German national team head coach in September ahead of their repechage campaign to qualify for the 2019 showpiece.
If Germany win the group, the country “most people didn’t know played rugby” will enter Pool B with the All Blacks.
And the former England defence coach knows his side’s performance in the repechage could initiate a long-term plan to grow the sport in a country where football dominates.
“The statistics that were released after the 2016 Rio Olympics showed the biggest audience for the rugby sevens event came from Germany,” added Ford.
“But football is huge here and schools will have three or four teams in each year group, whereas we are yet to break in.
“This World Cup has had a bit more publicity and after Sunday’s win against Hong Kong, we are getting a bit more press.
“Should they qualify, it will be a good time for German rugby to go out and get some sponsors, and start a five-year plan to try and grow the sport.”
Germany won their first game in the repechage 26-9 against Hong Kong, but they will also have to overcome Canada and Kenya to book their place alongside the world champions and South Africa at next year’s tournament.
“I would love to coach a team at the World Cup,” Ford told BBC Radio 5 live.
“All four countries play each other once over a three-week period in the repechage, and the winner gets the final spot at the tournament next year.
“I had been in the job for 10 weeks, and we didn’t have the finances to play any warm-up games or hold any camps, but we beat the so-called favourites Hong Kong in our first game.
“Ideally you want three or four warm-up games and camps where you have them 24/7, and training sessions with everyone there. We didn’t have that but I’m not complaining because I knew the situation when I came in.
“I was coaching a team I didn’t know. It was the first time ever where I wasn’t sure what they were going to produce, coupled with the fact I didn’t know what Hong Kong were like either.”
Germany’s route to the repechage was “through the back door” as other nations were disqualified from the Rugby Europe Championship, the continent’s second tier beneath the Six Nations.
“The European Championship is like a second Six Nations’ tournament and it includes the Georgias, the Spains and the Russias,” said Ford.
“In the last competition there were a few teams who fielded ineligible players and they were disqualified, so Germany got through to a World Cup qualifier.
“They beat Portugal before playing Samoa in the final where there was a gulf in class between the two sides.”
Samoa won both legs of their play-off to reach the 2019 World Cup, with Germany progressing to the repechage.
The game is still not professional in Germany and many of the national players have to fit training and matches around other jobs, and Ford is intent on rewarding his players’ commitment with a place in Japan.
“It’s an English-speaking changing room and there are quite a few South Africans on board, while all the German players speak English,” added Ford.
“There is a guy who plays for us who is a cable-car driver during the day, and a bouncer who works from 21:00 to 03:00 in the night.
“It makes you as coach want to give them the best opportunity because the commitment they show is humbling and they will run through a brick wall for you.”
Germany’s next match in the repechage is against Canada on Saturday, 17 November in Marseille, before they face Kenya in their final match on Friday, 23 November at the same venue.

Fresh from her UWW World Championships medal-winning performance, Pooja Dhanda has switched her focus to Mission Olympics. The vision is clear and resolve to succeed in the mission stronger than ever before. There is a purpose to fuel this burning desire and confidence oozes from the new-found success in Budapest, Hungary, where Indian girls made a strong impression in challenging the mighty opponents.
In a line-up that boasted of Olympic and World Championships medallists, three Indian girls were in contention for a medal. Pooja returned with a bronze. The each of ten girls in the squad showed potential worth qualification for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. There were stronger contenders like Vinesh Phogat and Divya Kakran – both Asian Games medallists in Jakarta – who missed the Budapest bus due to injuries.
Indian girls are an inspired lot now. The conversations now extend to winning Olympic medals. “We are capable of that (winning at Olympics). There cannot be a bigger achievement for an athlete than her coach being commended for her performance. Having seen our performances (in World Championships), even US team management came up to our coaches not just to congratulate but to ask them about our training and look for opportunities to practice with us,” Pooja told insidesport.co form Budapest.
“Tata Motors’ (Wrestling Federation of India’s Principal Sponsors) support has played a crucial role. It is not just about the sponsorship money. You gain in confidence when a brand like Tata Motors poses faith in you. You show stronger resolve to repay that debt. You are regarded as a professional bunch,” adds Puja. “There have been Olympic medals in the past. But this recognition by Tata Motors is a big reward to the system the WFI has created. It is a professional and personalised commitment of our president Mr Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who got a professional partner like Sporty Solutionz in the system to create commercial value for the sport. This joint effort and recognition is a shot in the arm for the wrestling fraternity.”
A seasoned performer, Pooja has struck form after a series of surgeries and long rehabilitation process. Wrestling comes to her before anything else in life. She was not the one to get destructed even by the prospect of doing a movie alongside Aamir Khan. Stardom to her has to be real, like the pride in her performance. “More than the medal, which remains the dream of each player who gets the honour to represent her country, the confidence we will be carrying from these World Championships is more meaningful. Our entire squad has got a belief that women’s wrestling in India has gone up by several notches. We have announced our arrival at the world stage. It was a big stage and we proved that belonged to this.
“Please don’t judge our performance by this one medal. Each of the girls has been an amazing performer here (in Budapest). Each and every girl has given us the confidence that we can beat any wrestler on our day. Agar aap draw dekhenge to samne World Champions or Olympic champions the. Mat par jaate waqt hamare andar ek confidence tha ki hum bhee jeet sakate hain (The draw was full of world champions, but we were confident that even we can win). This is our best performance so far,” said Puja.
The Haryana girl had prevailed over European champion Grace Jacob Bullen in the 57kg category bronze medal bout. The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games silver medallist had made the grade via repechage round. An optimistic Pooja takes pride in her performance while also inspiring her teammates to value India colours. “Champion banne ke liye har tarah ki situation men survive karna padta hai. Aap jab country ko represent kar rahe hain to fir wahan koi excuse nahin ho sakta. Hamne jab apne pool dekhe to samne world ke best wrestlers the. Olympic aur world champions the. Is championship ke baad har ladki mein ek confidence hai ki hum in men se kisi ko bhee hara sakte hain. Hamen pata he ki hamen kya karna hai. (There cannot be an excuse when you are representing your country. To be a champion one needs to survive in all situations),” says Pooja, who now believes that the Indian wrestlers need more international exposure and training.
“International exposure se bahut help milati hai. Olympics ki taiyari men aur international exposure, videshon men training aur competition chahiye. Hamare coaches aur federation ke paas wo vision hai. Hamen confidence hai ki hum Olympics ke liye qualify bhee karenge aur performance bhee pehale se behtar hee hogi. Jo log hamen support kar rahe hain hum unhain nirash nahin karenge (We need more international exposure now. Our coaches and federation is taking care of that. We are confident of Olympics qualification and a better performance there. We won’t disappoint the people who are supporting us),” added Pooja.
The 24-year-old Hisar Diva has been a giant killer. In the Indian Wrestling League she had toppled the World and Olympic champion Helen Maroulis of the USA twice, World Championship silver medallist and Olympic bronze medallist Odunayo Adekuoroye of Nigeria and World Championship silver medallist Marwa Amri. Now, a world championship medallist, she is not ready to sit on the laurels. For her defeating a world and Olympic champion is just a consolation, being the world and Olympic champion is what she has been gunning for.

Aging with grace takes practice and a bit of dedication, but in the end your confidence is sure to thrive. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are a few of my quick tips to get you started: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1️⃣Start your morning and night routines now. I don’t care what products you use, this step is all about setting a routine and sticking to it. To me, this is the most important aspect to having great skin. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2️⃣Book that facial. Having a 1on 1 session with a professional esthetician is priceless. Not only can they help guide you in picking out skin care products, they can also teach you what ingredients and techniques are best for your skin. This great info will carry over into your home routine and accelerate your skin care game. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3️⃣ Pay attention to how your skin feels and the issues you see happening. Being able to read your skin and what its needs are can help you choose your skin care for the day. If it feels dry, use a hydrating sheet mask and and extra dose of moisturizer. If your skin feels greasy and on the verge of breakout, pull out the cleanser that contains a baby boost of salicylic acid or tea tree oil. You have to be able to conform daily to what your skin is asking for. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 4️⃣ In all honesty, this should be my number one tip. So for those of you that need to hear this, WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN! I recommend an all mineral formula for your face. This will ensure a nice light formula that won’t irritate your skin or be too occlusive. Check out @seriouslyfabdotcom ‘s Zinc it Over spray or @repechage ‘s Mineral Face Shield. I love both! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Do you already follow these rules? Have any hard and fast rules you follow? I wanna know. ❤️ #antiwrinkles #loveyourlook #miramiraspa #skincarefanatic #skincarementor #skinbarrier #wholesomeskincare #estheticslife #skingeek #idahospa #skincareshop #skincarethreads #skinfirst #skincareregimen #skincaredaily #skincaregoals #radiantskin #igskincare #skincareproducts #skincarejunkie #skincarecommunity #skincarelove #skincareobsessed #skintips #skincareblogger #skincare https://www.instagram.com/p/B2l9OTsHiIi/?igshid=18j54g3hjh547
